COMING ON 11/19:
* The Trials of Rosie O’Neill – All 34 Episodes (VEI)
$29.99 SRP DVD

—–We first meet Fiona Rose (Rosie) O’Neill (Emmy winner Sharon Gless) in her psychiatrist’s office at her weekly session. It has been a year since she left the lucrative Beverly Hills law practice, once shared with her husband until he took up with the decorator (Oscar winner Helen Hunt) who – while designing their law offices – redesigned Rosie’s life as well. It has taken Rosie every bit of that year to come close to coming out of the wreckage of what had become of her life. Now, at 43 years of age, Rosie O’Neill makes a clean break with her corporate past, deciding to use her legal talents for public service. As the series begins, one might forgive Ms. O’Neill’s surprise when, rather than being assigned a post at the suburban courts of her adopted Santa Monica Beach community, Rosie finds herself adjacent to a slum neighborhood in downtown Los Angeles at the County Courts building. This new career does not sit well with either friends or family, none of whom understand why she would take such a frustrating, low-paying job. The personnel in the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office are also less than thrilled, believing the well dressed, well-coiffed, Mercedes-driving matron to be someone who, once she became bored with “slumming,” would abandon her post and the offices of the Public Defender. Award winning actor Robert (“RJ”) Wagner joined the show in 1992 (season two) playing suave Peter Donovan, the new editor of the Los Angeles Chronicle, who becomes Rosie’s lover. Also joining the Rosie O’Neill ensemble in the second season is Walter Kovacs (Emmy Award Winner Ed Asner), a retired hard-nosed conservative 35-year veteran of the police force constantly at odds with the liberal attitudes espoused by Rosie about her clients. Besides Wagner, Asner, and Helen Hunt, other award-winning guest stars who appear in the series include: Tony and Emmy Award Winner Tyne Daly, Grammy Award Winner Carole King, Emmy Award Winner Brenda Vaccaro, Oscar and Emmy Winner Paul Williams, Emmy Winner Peggy McKay, and Tony Award Winner Jonelle Allen. The show’s musical theme, “I Wish I Knew,” written by Carole King and performed by Melissa Manchester during the first season, has an instrumental version which is used intermittently during season two. Late in season one, Ms. King makes an acting appearance in the show only to find herself cajoled into sitting at the piano to play and sing the song she composed for the show’s main title.
