Grantchester Season 8 is Coming to MASTERPIECE
BOSTON, MA – August 11, 2022: Fan-favorite crime drama Grantchester is set to return for an eighth season on MASTERPIECE PBS in the US and ITV in the UK.

Filming for the hugely popular show produced by Kudos (a Banijay UK company) has started, with Robson Green returning as DI Geordie Keating and Tom Brittney as Reverend Will Davenport.

Will is the happiest he’s ever been but his world will be rocked by a terrible accident. He’s always preached the word of a compassionate God – but how can he now, when his despair leads him on a dangerous downward spiral?

Geordie has found a new contentment in his relationship with Cathy, but when they are both confronted with shocking announcements at work their happiness is threatened. As Mrs. C, Leonard, Jack and Daniel rally around, both Will and Geordie find themselves in unfamiliar, emotional waters and murder is always around the corner.

Grantchester Season 8 will range from Speedway to spies, exploring the lives of invisible women and the very visible problems caused by Leonard’s new vocation which may, once again, find him battling the law. Exploring faith, forgiveness, and redemption – this explosive series tests Will and Geordie to the limit.

Charlotte Ritchie (Ghosts) returns as Bonnie, alongside Tessa Peake-Jones as Mrs C, Al Weaver as Leonard Finch, Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy Keating, Oliver Dimsdale as Daniel Marlowe and Nick Brimble as Jack Chapman.

Special guest actors for this series include Shaun Dingwall (Top Boy, Noughts & Crosses), Jeff Rawle (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Doc Martin) and Jemima Rooper (Gold Digger, The Girlfriend Experience).

Kudos Executive Producer Emma Kingsman-Lloyd said: “We are delighted to be returning to our beloved Grantchester. It’s a testament to the fantastic creative work of our cast and crew that the audience want us back series after series.”

MASTERPIECE Executive Producer Susanne Simpson said: “We are thrilled to bring MASTERPIECE viewers back to Grantchester for an eighth season. The talented ensemble cast and captivating storylines have made Grantchester one of our most beloved series. We can’t wait for fans to see it!”

Robson Green added: “It’s so good to be back on Grantchester. A series that just gets better with age. Everyone involved is at the top of their game and this incredibly charming, likeable, dark and edgy show is an absolute privilege to be part of.”

Tom Brittney said: “I’m absolutely chuffed that we’re going ahead with another series of Grantchester and that I get to continue playing a character I adore so much. To be part of a show as well loved as this one, that is now in its eighth series, is an absolute honor.”

Drama commissioner Chloe Tucker will oversee production from an ITV perspective. Chloe Tucker said: “We are delighted to be returning to Grantchester for an eighth series. With an incredibly talented cast and crew, and storylines that always deliver, Grantchester is a real treat for the audience.”

Adapted from The Grantchester Mysteries novels by James Runcie, the series was developed for television by Daisy Coulam. Writers this series include Richard Cookson (episode one), Helen Black (episode three), Anita Vettesse (episode four) and Richard Cookson and Karla Williams (episode five).

The series is directed by Rob Evans, Al Weaver (who makes his directing debut) and Martin Smith.

TV Series on the Life of Clementine Churchill in Development

MASTERPIECE News

July 28, 2022; Boston, MA- A five-part drama based on the public and private life of Clementine Churchill, wife of British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, is being developed for television by MASTERPIECE/PBS and Maven Screen Media, alongside Origin Pictures and Sayoko Teitelbaum. Award-winning writer Margaret Nagle (Warm Springs, Boardwalk Empire, The Good Lie) will write the original script with the working title Mrs. Churchill and executive produce alongside Celine Rattray, Trudie Styler, David Thompson, Sayako Teitelbaum and Susanne Simpson.

MASTERPIECE Executive Producer Susanne Simpson made the announcement during the virtual Television Critics Association press tour.

This is the untold story of a fiercely independent and very modern heroine who risked everything to save her country and the world from fascism-and her husband from himself. Clementine’s story has slipped through the cracks of history. The magnitude of her many achievements are only recently being recognized.

“Winston has said that the Second World War would have been impossible without Clementine, and yet she has not been given the credit she deserves. We are thrilled to be working with MASTERPIECE and developing a series about this complicated, extraordinary woman,” said Nagle and Maven co- founder Celine Rattray. Maven is producing with Sayoko Teitelbaum and David Thompson of Origin Pictures.

“Our MASTERPIECE viewers will be enthralled by this historical drama about a fiercely independent woman who influenced the course of world history,” said Simpson. “Margaret Nagle is the perfect writer to tell Clementine’s true story, and we’re proud to be partnering with Maven on this compelling series.” MASTERPIECE is presented on PBS by GBH Boston.

Each episode of the limited series will follow Clementine through pivotal moments of her life. Raised by an unstable mother in relative poverty caring for her siblings, Clementine became a suffragette working two jobs. Known as the “Broke Beauty,” she refused to marry for money or to a man she didn’t love. The series will follow her courtship with Winston and struggle with motherhood, her broken relationship with her young niece, Diana Mitford, who was brainwashed by fascism, her pivotal relationship with American Harry Hopkins (FDR’s conscience) who held the purse strings to (yet to be created) Land Lease, ensuring England could survive against the Germans until America joined the war, and a climactic trip to Russia where she goes toe to toe with Stalin. The show will be a window into one of history’s most remarkable and complicated women.

“Miss Scarlet and The Duke”: Season 2 and Season 3 Airdates and More
Season 2 is coming to “Masterpiece” on PBS Sunday, October 16, and Season 3 will follow soon enough on January 8, 2023.
[via press release from PBS]
Miss Scarlet and The Duke: Season 2 and Season 3 Airdates and More

There’s double the good news for fans of the Victorian detective series Miss Scarlet and the Duke!

Season 2 is coming to MASTERPIECE on PBS Sunday, Oct. 16, 8/7c, and Season 3 will follow soon enough on January 8, 2023, 8/7c!

While we’re waiting for two new seasons, we’ll catch you up on the basics of what the show is about, the cast, how you can stream Season 1 and more.

About the Show and What’s Ahead

Move over Sherlock Holmes! Victorian England’s first-ever female sleuth is on the case. Kate Phillips stars as astute private eye Eliza Scarlet, joined by Stuart Martin as her partner at Scotland Yard – Detective Inspector William “The Duke” Wellington.

Season 1 is set in London at the start of the Sherlock Holmes era, circa 1880. Eliza’s father, Henry, is a widowed retired police officer, currently a private detective running up bills and drinking through his occasional earnings. Nonetheless, he’s a talented investigator, and has taught his only child, Eliza, the trade since she was a girl. She is now determined to break into this male-only profession.

Fortunately, Eliza’s childhood friend happens to be a detective inspector at Scotland Yard: William “The Duke” Wellington. He gets his nickname from the most famous Englishman of the 19th century: the Duke of Wellington, victor over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. Like that other Wellington, the Duke is cool and decisive in a scrape. And he’s also a ladies’ man, which leads to interesting complications with Eliza.

Sometimes working together – but often at odds – Eliza and the Duke tackle a series of fascinating cases. On launching her business, Eliza’s initial challenge is not criminals or clients so much as getting society to take a female detective seriously, even one who has mastered wounds, poisons, motives, and red herrings.

Season 2 opens a few months after the conclusion of Season 1: Eliza has solved a very personal case that vexed her throughout Season 1; her relationship with William (“the Duke”) continues to slowly simmer; and she continues to face the challenges of being a female private detective in male-dominated Victorian London.

The Cast and Characters

Just starting out with Miss Scarlet and The Duke? Here are some of the unforgettable characters you’ll meet in Season 1, along with brief bios of the actors who portray them.

Kate Phillips (Miss Scarlet): Miss Scarlet may appear to be a refined Victorian lady, but she’s also as scrappy and feisty, resilient and strong-spirited.

Before her days solving crime and irking the Duke as Eliza Scarlet, Phillips made a name for herself in series such as Peaky Blinders (as Linda Shelby) and The Crown (as Venetia Scott). MASTERPIECE fans may remember Phillips as Jane Seymour in Wolf Hall and as Tillie Seigler in My Mother and Other Strangers.

Stuart Martin (The Duke): William “The Duke” Wellington is a tough Scotland Yard inspector who lives and breathes his work – and believes that only a man can do the work of a detective properly. But his old friend Eliza Scarlet is determined to prove him wrong

Martin is known for his work on television series including his three-season run on Jamestown as Silas Sharrow, on Medici as Lorenzo, and in the limited series Babylon. Martin’s talents don’t just stop at traditional on-screen roles. The actor has leant his vocal talents to a number of popular video games, including Assassin’s Creed, Dreamfall Chapters, and Ryse: Son of Rome.

Cathy Belton (Ivy, the Scarlet family’s housekeeper): Ivy does what she can to be part housekeeper, part parent to Eliza after the death of her father, but impulsive Eliza isn’t exactly the best at listening to her advice.

Prior to her days on Miss Scarlet & The Duke, Belton was best known for her work in the award-winning film Philomena, alongside Judi Dench, and for starring roles in series such as Red Rock and The Woman in White.

Andrew Gower (Rupert Parker): Parker seems to be a mild-mannered oddball from a wealthy family. But underneath it all, he’s an independent think and strikes up a unique friendship with Miss Scarlet.

MASTERPIECE fans may recognize Gower from his appearance in the fifth and final season of Poldark as James Hadfield, whose attempt to assassinate King George III was foiled by none other than Ross Poldark himself. Gower also made a name for himself in the second season of Outlander as the “Bonnie Prince” Charles Stuart.

Ansu Kabia (Moses): Fans may recognize Kabia from his roles in films such as Murder on the Orient Express and Last Christmas, or from TV roles in series such as I May Destroy You and Casualty. Miss Scarlet and The Duke, however, is not Kabia’s first MASTERPIECE role – the actor also appeared in World on Fire and The Long Song.

Kevin Doyle (Henry Scarlet): Henry Scarlet, a retired police officer, is the original Scarlet detective in the family. Before his untimely death, Mr. Scarlet ran his business into some trouble, leaving Eliza to pick up the pieces after his death. But it turns out Miss Scarlet may not be so alone after all, as Henry’s memory guides her through the shady London underworld in Season 1.

Doyle is recognized for his six seasons as Mr. Molesley in the Downton Abbey television series, and the subsequent films. On top of his Downton days, Doyle has also appeared in a number of series including Happy Valley, The Tudors, and Silent Witness.

Nicola Walker stars as the dry-witted skipper of Glasgow’s Marine Homicide Unit

Nicola Walker stars as the dry-witted skipper of Glasgow’s Marine Homicide Unit in a new series on MASTERPIECE, “Annika”

Premieres on PBS Passport & the PBS MASTERPIECE Prime Video Channel on April 17, 2022

Arlington, VA – March 29, 2022 – Set on a scenic river amid stunning Scottish lochs, Glasgow has an unusually high rate of slayings connected to water. At least, it does in MASTERPIECE’s gorgeous new crime series starring Nicola Walker (Unforgotten, Last Tango in Halifax) as DI Annika Strandhed, the speedboat-driving head of the city’s newly-formed Marine Homicide Unit. “Annika’s” six suspenseful episodes will have a special premiere on PBS Passport, an added member benefit which provides extended access to a digital, on-demand library of PBS programs, and the PBS MASTERPIECE Prime Video Channel on April 17, 2022. The subscription rate for the PBS MASTERPIECE Prime Video Channel is $5.99/month with an Amazon Prime or Prime Video subscription. The series will have a television broadcast in Fall 2022.

A police procedural with wit, “Annika” delighted critics during its recent UK broadcast. “The dialogue is so droll and the performances so charming I’m in for what fisherfolk call the long haul,” enthused the reviewer for The Guardian and The Times offered this praise, “Annika allows Walker to let loose a warm sense of humor.”

Walker is joined by Jamie Sives (Guilt) as DS Michael McAndrews, Annika’s old colleague, who resents being passed over for the DI job but performs at full throttle as her second-in-command; Katie Leung (Harry Potter) as DC Blair Ferguson, the forensic brains behind the unit; and Ukweli Roach (Grantchester) as DS Tyrone Clarke, the new cop at the station, who requested a posting with the legendary Annika. Also appearing are Silvie Furneaux (Limbo) as Morgan, Annika’s rebellious teenage daughter, and Paul McGann (Luther) as Morgan’s therapist Jake Strathearn, who develops into something of a soul mate for single mom Annika.

While other TV detectives discuss the case exclusively with their team, Annika addresses viewers directly, “breaking the fourth wall” that separates the action from the audience.

Annika’s strikingly effective M.O. is to link the crime under investigation to her obsessive reading of literature and mythology. For example, the harpoon manner of death in Episode One starts her musing about Herman Melville’s Moby Dick and its ruinous quest for a white whale, which provides an oblique clue to the murderer’s motive.

Similarly, Episode Two features the discovery of a corpse on the boat Valkyrie, linking the crime—in Annika’s mind—to the female warrior deities who gave the vessel its name. As Annika closes in on the fugitive killer, it suddenly occurs to her that Valkyries “don’t run; they fly.”

Uncannily real, Walker’s interpretation of Annika draws on the popular radio drama Annika Stranded, which aired in 31 episodes on BBC Radio 4 between 2013 and 2020. Walker was the one-woman star of that series, with scripts by Nick Walker (no relation). The two Walkers have now teamed up again to bring Annika to television in all her complexity, vulnerability, and eccentric affability.

“I’ve been Annika a long time now,” says Nicola Walker, “and if there was a chance of getting her fully fleshed out in a real-world environment, I wanted to be part of it.”

Series Description
Fishing bodies from the waters around Glasgow, Scotland, DI Annika Strandhed and her newly-formed Marine Homicide Unit face a steady stream of murders in this new series,
starring Nicola Walker as the title character. Confiding her thoughts directly to viewers, Annika juggles baffling cases and a rebellious teenage daughter. The former are easier to solve than the latter. “Droll and…charming,” praised The Guardian (London).

Episode One
Annika assembles her team to solve murders in the waters around Glasgow. Their first case looks a lot like a whale hunt gone wrong.

Episode Two
Annika’s teenage daughter, Morgan, gets mixed up with suspects in a revenge slaying. Norse saga comes to life as Annika’s team closes in.

Episode Three
Annika sees one of playwright Ibsen’s plots play out in a homicide. Meanwhile, she takes more than a parental interest in Morgan’s therapist, Jake.

Episode Four
An author who has ruined lives has her own ruined—permanently. Blair finds a friend for Morgan. Annika and Jake go to a museum exhibit.

Episode Five
Arriving at a murder scene on a party boat, Annika thinks of the Greek god of unrestrained celebration. From there, things only get more chaotic.

Episode Six
Michael’s brother is the prime suspect in his ex’s murder. Annika goes for what looks like a one-way ride. A secret about Michael comes out.

Annika is a UKTV Original Production by Black Camel Pictures in co-production with MASTERPIECE and in association with All3Media International, and Screen Scotland. The executive producers are Nicole Fitzpatrick, Jennifer Armitage, Susanne Simpson, David Swetman, Philippa Collie Cousins, and Arabella Page Croft. The producer is Kieran Parker. The series is created and written by Nick Walker. The writers are Lucia Haynes and Frances Poet. The directors are Philip John and Fiona Walton.
