IFC MIDNIGHT TAKES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO SCI-FI DISASTER FILM ‘RUBIKON’

IFC MIDNIGHT TAKES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO SCI-FI DISASTER FILM ‘RUBIKON’ FROM DIRECTOR MAGDALENA LAURITSCH

NEW YORK, NY (February 10, 2022) – IFC Midnight announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to RUBIKON directed by Magdalena Lauritsch, a science-fiction disaster film that brings social commentary and an acute moral dilemma into heart-pounding realization. The film represented by sales agent The Playmaker Munich stars Julia Franz Richter (UNDINE), George Blagden (LES MISERABLES), and Mark Ivanir (THE GOOD SHEPHERD). RUBIKON is a production by Samsara Filmproduktion in co-production with Graf Filmproduktion. The production was funded by Österreichisches Filminstitut, Filmfonds Wien, ORF Film- und Fernsehabkommen, FISA and Carinthia Film Commission. IFC Midnight will release the film in theaters and on demand in 2022.

Disaster strikes on earth. In RUBIKON, the crew of a space station, Hannah (Julia Franz Richter), Gavin (George Blagden) and Dimitri (Mark Ivanir) must decide whether they risk their lives to get back home during a global catastrophe and search for survivors or stay safe in the sophisticated station’s algae symbiosis system, which makes them fully self-reliant. RUBIKON questions whether we have the right to seal ourselves off in safety and ignorance from the ongoing problems of the world, as three people with three very different worldviews collide in this pressure-cooker environment millions of miles away.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, said, “Magdalena Lauritsch’s wildly entertaining science-fiction debut presents a vivid tale of survival that places the audience at the center of a universal moral dilemma. We are thrilled to partner with the stellar team behind RUBIKON to bring this totally immersive deep-space experience to audiences across North America.”

Loredana Rehekampff, producer and CEO of Samsara Film, added “We are very proud to have found an amazing partner for RUBIKON in IFC Midnight and are excited to present the movie to an American audience in the best possible way. RUBIKON is an ambitious Austrian genre film, which we produced for the international market. Having IFC Midnight on board from the start in this journey is an important and joyful milestone for the whole team.”

Antonio Exacoustos, Head of Sales & Productions of The Playmaker Munich, states “Loredana & Andreas from Samsara Film managed to pull off the impossible by producing a visually stunning sci-fi disaster movie out of Austria.” Moritz Hemminger, Deputy Head of Sales Acquisitions of The Playmaker Munich, adds, “The international interest in RUBIKON is overwhelming, and we look forward to collaborating with the prestigious and determined IFC Midnight team on the distribution of RUBIKON in North America.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films’ Manager of Acquisitions Adam Koehler with The Playmaker Munich’s Deputy Head of Sales & Acquisitions Moritz Hemminger on behalf of the filmmakers. The Playmaker Munich will host a private screening of 2021 Cannes Frontières Buyers Showcase contender RUBIKON at this year’s virtual EFM.

IFC MIDNIGHT AND SHUDDER TAKES SUNDANCE BREAKOUT ‘WATCHER’ FROM DIRECTOR CHLOE OKUNO

IFC MIDNIGHT AND SHUDDER TAKES SUNDANCE BREAKOUT ‘WATCHER’ FROM DIRECTOR CHLOE OKUNO

FILM STARS MAIKA MONROE (IT FOLLOWS), KARL GLUSMAN AND BURN GORMAN

NEW YORK, NY (January 30, 2022) – IFC Midnight announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to WATCHER from director Chloe Okuno (Shudder’s V/H/S/94, SLUT) starring Maika Monroe (IT FOLLOWS, GRETA), Karl Glusman (LOVE) and Burn Gorman (TORCHWOOD). Okuno co-wrote the film with Zach Ford and the film is the inaugural film produced in a new genre pact between Image Nation and Spooky Pictures, in association with Lost City. Producers are Roy Lee and Steven Schneider of Spooky Pictures, Derek Dauchy, Mason Novick, John Finemore, Aaron Kaplan and Sean Perrone. Executive producers are James Hoppe, Elizabeth Grave, Ben Ross, Rami Yasin, Gabi Antal. WATCHER made its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and IFC Midnight will release the film in theaters and on VOD in 2022 with Shudder taking the first streaming window.

In WATCHER, Julia (Maika Monroe) joins her husband when he relocates to his family’s native Romania for a new job. Having recently abandoned her acting career, she finds herself frequently alone and unoccupied. One night, people-watching from her picture window, she spots a vague figure in an adjacent building, who seems to be looking back at her. Soon after, while alone at a local movie theater, Julia’s sense of being watched intensifies, and she becomes certain she’s being followed — could it be the same unknown neighbor? Meanwhile, a serial killer known as The Spider stalks the city.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “Chloe Okuno’s exceptional vision uses horror and thriller elements in a masterful way that will resonate with any person looking for a singular cinematic experience, even further emboldened by a star-turning performance from Maika Monroe. We’re honored to introduce Chloe’s stunning feature debut WATCHER to audiences across North America, announcing her as a director to watch.”

Director Chloe Okuno added, “It was a hard-fought battle to make Watcher during the pandemic, and I’m so proud of everyone who worked to get us to this point. I am beyond delighted to partner with IFC Midnight and Shudder to continue this journey together and cannot wait to share the movie with a wider audience.”

Craig Engler, GM for Shudder added, “We’ve been huge fans of Chloe Okuno’s since her short film days and were lucky to have her direct one of the most popular segments of our hit movie V/H/S/94, which premiered to record numbers last year. We’re delighted to be working with her again on WATCHER, which is a brilliant and tense film with a breakout performance from Maika Monroe, and we can’t wait for Shudder members to see it.”

In a review for Roger Ebert, Brian Tallerico praised Okuno’s direction, “Sleek and effective, WATCHER is an old-fashioned thriller with a modern heartbeat, an announcement of Okuno as a major talent to watch.” Reviewing for Variety, Jessica Kiang further comments on the timely undercurrent of the film, “WATCHER, if it has an agenda beyond being a fun, shivery, fish-out-of-water chiller, is not so much a manifesto to Believe All Women as it is a reminder to all women watching to at least believe ourselves.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films’ Head of Acquisitions and Production Scott Shooman with UTA Independent Film Group and Cinetic on behalf of the filmmakers.

IFC Midnight is home to some of the most exciting new voices in genre film of the last decade, including Natalie Erika James’ RELIC, Dave Franco’s THE RENTAL, Jennifer Kent’s THE BABADOOK, Carlo Mirabella Davis’ SWALLOW, and the latest film from Peter Strickland premiering at the upcoming Berlinale, FLUX GOURMET. IFC MIDNIGHT SCOOPS U.S. RIGHTS TO ESKIL VOGT’S CHILLING SUPERNATURAL DRAMA “THE INNOCENTS”

IFC MIDNIGHT SCOOPS U.S. RIGHTS TO ESKIL VOGT’S CHILLING SUPERNATURAL DRAMA “THE INNOCENTS”
Sophomore feature by the Thelma, Louder Than Bombs, and Oslo, August 31 screenwriter bowed at Cannes 2021 Un Certain Regard and will next screen at Fantastic Fest

NEW YORK, NY (September XX, 2021) – IFC Midnight announced today that they are acquiring U.S. rights to the coming of age supernatural drama The Innocents, written and directed by Eskil Vogt. IFC Midnight will release the film in 2022.

One of Scandinavia’s most acclaimed screenwriters for his collaborations with Joachim Trier, including Thelma, Louder Than Bombs, and Oslo, August 31, Eskil Vogt made his directorial debut with the 2014 Sundance and Berlin prizewinner Blind. His second feature as writer/director, The Innocents stars Rakel Lenora Fløttum, Alva Brynsmo Ramstad, Mina Yasmin Bremseth Asheim, and Sam Ashraf alongside Morten Svartveit and Ellen Dorrit Petersen. The film was produced by Maria Ekerhovd for Mer Film, in co-production with Zentropa Sweden, Film i Vast, Snowglobe, Bufo, Logical, Zefyr, and Don’t Look Now.

A dark and twisted morality fable that unfolds under the bright Nordic sun, The Innocents follows a group of young children who become friends during the summer holidays, drawn together by the discovery of mysterious shared abilities. Out of sight of the adults, the children bond quickly, exploring their newfound powers and testing their limits in the forests and playgrounds surrounding their brutalist apartment complex. As the children’s loyalties shift and small cruelties escalate, their innocent play takes a dark turn towards the malevolent, and strange things begin to happen.

Vogt made a splash at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival with two films, premiering The Worst Person in the World in competition with Joachim Trier and making his first directorial Cannes appearance with The Innocents in Un Certain Regard, where it caught the attention of critics for Vogt’s meticulous direction and the haunting performances by its young cast. In a review for the Hollywood Reporter, Leslie Felperin wrote, “The lonely, uncanny and sometimes unthinkingly violent world of childhood is explored with chilling candor and exceptional skill… Vogt keeps the focus tight on the children throughout, which somehow punches up the sense of dread”. Writing for Variety, Jessica Kiang hailed the film as “superbly atmospheric, deftly crafted horror”, adding, “this superior chiller is both a satisfying genre exercise and a minute observation of the process by which young children acquire morality…in [Rakel Lenora] Fløttum’s remarkably assured and self-possessed performance, Vogt finds a perfect avatar for his provocative yet persuasive ideas about the innocence (or otherwise) of children”.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, said, “Eskil Vogt is one of the most exciting filmmakers working in Scandinavia today. He has developed a distinct voice through his many high-profile writing credits over the years, and it’s with much excitement that we are now able to partner with him on his second directorial feature THE INNOCENTS. Although the film explores horror on a more supernatural level, there is a deeply rooted story of the complexities of morality layered in between, which makes this the perfect fit for IFC Midnight.”

Director Eskil Vogt added, “I’ve been a long time admirer of how IFC Films have championed independent and genre bending cinema in an ever changing marketplace. They have such a great and innovative team and I couldn’t be happier to work with them in unleashing THE INNOCENTS in the U.S.” Dave Bishop, CEO of Protagonist Pictures, said, “THE INNOCENTS is a brilliant and deeply unsettling film from a master filmmaker and we have no doubt that it will land with a punch. Our long-time friends at IFC are the perfect partners to connect Eskil Vogt’s stunning picture with U.S. audiences.”

The deal for the film was negotiated between IFC Films with Protagonist’s Chief Commercial Officer Geroge Hamilton and Chief Operating Office James Pugh of Protagonist Pictures representing the filmmakers.

IFC MIDNIGHT SNATCHES U.S. RIGHTS TO HOME INVASION THRILLER “SEE FOR ME”

IFC MIDNIGHT SNATCHES U.S. RIGHTS TO HOME INVASION THRILLER “SEE FOR ME” STARRING A BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE BY VISUALLY IMPAIRED ACTOR SKYLER DAVENPORT

NEW YORK, NY (August 30, 2021) – IFC Midnight announced today that they are acquiring U.S. rights to Randall Okita’s SEE FOR ME, a home invasion chiller that pits a blind house-sitter against three experienced thieves. IFC Midnight will release the film in 2022.

Directed by artist and filmmaker Randall Okita, SEE FOR ME is a Wildling Pictures Production. Written by Adam Yorke and Tommy Gushue, produced by Matt Code and Kristy Neville, and David Di Brina is the executive producer. The film is produced with the participation of Telefilm Canada and Ontario Creates. The film stars visually impaired actor Skyler Davenport as blind house-sitter Sophie, alongside Kim Coates, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Pascal Langdale, Joe Pingue, George Tchortov, Laura Vandervoort, and Emily Piggford.

When blind former skier Sophie accepts a last-minute house-sitting job in a secluded mansion, she awakes in the middle of the night to find the house under invasion by a group of thieves seeking a hidden safe. Her only means of defense: a new app called “See For Me”, which matches her with a volunteer across the country who uses Sophie’s cell phone to see on her behalf. Stubbornly independent, Sophie is reluctant to accept help until she is connected to Kelly, an army veteran who spends her days playing first person shooter games. As the game of cat-and-mouse with the intruders escalates, Sophie is forced to learn that if she’s going to survive the night, she’ll need to take all the help she can get.

The sophomore feature from Randall Okita, who previously directed The Lockpicker and acclaimed VR experience The Book of Distance, SEE FOR ME made its World Premiere at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival, where critics took notice of Okita’s confident direction and intricate staging. In a review for Bloody Disgusting, Meagan Navarro wrote, “Okita never ceases to find distinct angles or keep things visually interesting…the snowy setting and the disconcerting sound design contribute to the isolated atmosphere”.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, said, “SEE FOR ME is an innovative take on the home invasion thriller and an impressive showcase of Randall’s skills as a storyteller and visual artist, with nail-biting twists and turns that are perfect for IFC Midnight audiences. It’s also an exciting debut by lead actor Skyler Davenport, who really anchors the film with their expressive and complex performance.”

Director Randall Okita added, “We are delighted to be working with IFC Midnight, and I can’t wait for audiences to be thrilled and uplifted by Sophie’s journey in SEE FOR ME.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films with XYZ and Elle Driver representing the filmmakers.

IFC MIDNIGHT DEVOURS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS FOR WELSH-LANGUAGE REVENGE HORROR “THE FEAST”

IFC MIDNIGHT DEVOURS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS FOR WELSH-LANGUAGE REVENGE HORROR “THE FEAST”
NEW YORK, NY (April 29, 2021) – IFC Midnight announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to the Welsh-language supernatural revenge horror The Feast, directed by BAFTA-winning television director Lee Haven Jones in his feature debut. IFC Midnight will release the film Thanksgiving 2021.

Directed by Jones and written and produced by Roger Williams, The Feast stars Annes Elwy, Nia Roberts, and Julian Lewis Jones alongside Sion Alun Davies, Steffan Cennydd, Rhodri Meilir, and Lisa Palfrey. The Feast was produced through Ffilm Cymru Wales’ Cinematic scheme and was funded by S4C, Ffilm Cymru Wales, BFI (using funds from the National Lottery) and Fields Park. The film was produced in association with Melville Media Limited with support from Great Point Media.

Rooted in the potent mythical fables of Wales, The Feast unfolds over the course of a single evening as a wealthy family gathers at their lavish home in the Welsh mountains for a dinner party, hosting a local businessman and neighbouring farmer to broker a business deal to mine the surrounding countryside. When a mysterious young woman arrives to be their waitress for the evening, the family’s beliefs and values are challenged as her quiet yet disturbing presence begins to unravel their lives – slowly, deliberately, and with the most terrifying of consequences. A slow burn meditation on history and tradition, greed and responsibility, identity and difference, The Feast is a contemporary morality tale that questions who is truly meant to inherit the earth, permeated with a mounting sense of dread that leads to a horrifying, blood-soaked conclusion.

Filmed in the Welsh language, The Feast made its world premiere as a Midnighters entry at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival, with Jones’ meticulous composition and Annes Elwy’s eerie central performance catching the attention of U.S. and international critics alike. In a review for Screen International, Nikki Baughan praised her lead performance as “beguiling”, writing, “Annes Elwy is quietly mesmerizing…in a role which utilizes little dialogue, Elwy plums Cadi’s surprising depths with a quiet intensity”. Reviewing for Variety, Jessica Kiang wrote, “The chilly control of Jones’ filmmaking, enhanced by the pristine, deadened soundscape and Samuel Sim’s intriguing, atmospheric score, keeps our attention squirming on the hook,” adding, “the direction is so confident and the craft so impeccable that The Feast, though built from few ingredients, fills you up like a three-course meal”.

Arianna Bocco President of IFC Films, said, “It’s hard to shake the sense of fear and apprehension that you feel while watching The Feast, a terrifying and twisted fable that will keep you on the very edge of your seat until the shocking, grand guignol-worthy finale. We’re so excited to work with Lee on his feature debut and can’t wait to share The Feast with horror audiences everywhere.”

Writer and Producer Roger Williams added, “I’m thrilled IFC Midnight will be serving up The Feast in the USA and Canada. I’m certain audiences across North America will be entertained and horrified in equal measure by our unique Welsh film which thanks to IFC Midnight will now find the widest audience possible.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films President Arianna Bocco and Director of Acquisitions Aijah Keith with Bankside Films representing the filmmakers.

IFC MIDNIGHT PICKS UP PSYCHOLOGICAL BODY-HORROR ‘A BANQUET’
DEBUT FEATURE FROM THE NEXT ‘GENRE DIRECTOR TO WATCH’ RUTH PAXTON

The film stars Sienna Guillory (Resident Evil film series, High Rise), British rising stars Jessica Alexander (Get Even) and Ruby Stokes (Rocks, Una), and award-winning actress Lindsay Duncan CBE (Made in Italy, Private Lives). A BANQUET will be released by IFC Midnight in 2021.
