IFC FILMS SCOOPS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO SEARING POLICE SIEGE DOC ‘HOLD YOUR FIRE’

FILM TO HAVE ITS U.S. DEBUT AT THE UPCOMING 2021 DOC NYC
Directed By Stefan Forbes and Produced by Fab 5 Freddy, Stefan Forbes, Tia Wou, and Amir Soltani

NEW YORK, NY (Nov 1, 2021) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to searing police reform documentary HOLD YOUR FIRE by Emmy-nominated director Stefan Forbes (BOOGIE MAN: THE LEE ATWATER STORY). HOLD YOUR FIRE puts a spotlight on the longest hostage siege in NYPD history and the people instrumental in an event that birthed modern hostage negotiation and that could provide hope for repairing America’s broken policing system. Produced by Fab 5 Freddy, Stefan Forbes, Tia Wou, and Amir Soltani with consulting producer Sam Pollard (MLK/FBI). The documentary made its world premiere at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, where it caught the attention of critics for its timely subject matter and ability to strike a compelling narrative while exploring the complex humanity of its subjects. HOLD YOUR FIRE will have its U.S. premiere at the upcoming 2021 DOC NYC, and IFC Films will release the film in 2022.

HOLD YOUR FIRE follows Shu’aib Raheem and his friends who attempted to steal guns for self-defense in Brooklyn in 1973. They were cornered by the NYPD, and a violent gun battle killed a police officer, beginning the longest hostage siege in NYPD history. The NYPD’s 130-year-old policy was to deliver an ultimatum, and then respond with deadly force, but maverick NYPD psychologist Harvey Schlossberg fought to avert a bloodbath, reform police methods, and save the lives of hostages, police, and the four young Muslim men at the heart of the conflict. HOLD YOUR FIRE uncovers what really happened in this landmark event.

In a review for Indiewire, Tambay Obenson described Forbes’ approach as “operating from a place of non-judgemental curiosity by placing a sociological framework around personal and criminal melodrama”, adding that the result of the film is “a searing look into a little-known moment in history with profound repercussions for how we understand policing today.” Manohla Dargis of The New York Times simply described the film as “a jaw dropper”, and Brent Lang of Variety noted, “the issues that Forbes’ film probes, ones of racism, police brutality and gun violence, remain fiercely urgent.”

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, said, “As he has done previously with his stellar film BOOGIE MAN, Stefan has done a remarkable job portraying all sides of this complex story, while advocating only for transparency. He has highlighted the impact one person can make in the lives of many and makes a powerful case for why police reform is incredibly urgent. We couldn’t be happier to partner with him and his team to screen this film for North American audiences.”

Director Stefan Forbes added, “It’s an honor to team up with IFC Films, who are known for their taste and creative vision. We’re excited to release this film as our nation grapples with racial tension and the specter of increased political violence. We hope Dr. Schlossberg’s keen insights on conflict resolution can help Americans learn to hold our fire.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films President Arianna Bocco and Manager of Acquisitions & Productions Adam Koehler with Submarine Entertainment acting on behalf of the filmmakers.

IFC FILMS SNAPS UP U.S. RIGHTS TO THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO’S ‘OFFICIAL COMPETITION’

IFC FILMS SNAPS UP U.S. RIGHTS TO THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO’S ‘OFFICIAL COMPETITION’ STARRING PENÉLOPE CRUZ AND ANTONIO BANDERAS AFTER VENICE FILM FESTIVAL DEBUT

OFFICIAL COMPETITION MARKS THE FIRST TIME ACTING HEAVYWEIGHTS PENÉLOPE CRUZ AND ANTONIO BANDERAS HEADLINE A FILM TOGETHER

NEW YORK, NY (October 21, 2021) – IFC Films has acquired U.S. rights to OFFICIAL COMPETITION, directed by Mariano Cohn, Gastón Duprat, and written by Cohn and Duprat with Andrés Duprat. The film had its world premiere at the 2021 Venice Film Festival in competition, where it earned glowing reviews and brought Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas together as headliners for the first time alongside Oscar Martínez and José Luis Gómez to round out the cast. OFFICIAL COMPETITION was produced by The Mediapro Studio’s Jaume Roures, with executive producers Javier Méndez, Laura Fernández Espeso, and Javier Pons. IFC Films will release the film in 2022.

In OFFICIAL COMPETITION, an octogenarian millionaire pharmaceutical tycoon (José Luis Gómez) decides to finance a great work of cinema after having surveyed his legacy and finding it lacking in prestige. He purchases the rights to a Nobel Prize–winning novel about sibling rivalry and entrusts the property to enigmatic auteur Lola Cuevas (Penélope Cruz). A visionary conceptualist with a penchant for offscreen theatrics and micromanagement, Lola casts as her embattled co-leads a pair of veteran thespians who couldn’t be less alike: Iván Torres (Oscar Martínez) is a revered educator and legend of the stage much concerned with ethics and artistry, while Félix Rivero (Antonio Banderas) is a glamorous global star known mostly for brainless, bombastic entertainments.

Alternating between exacerbating the actors’ mutual antipathy and uniting them in their discomfort with her psychologically tumultuous rehearsal techniques, Lola seeks to capture the drama of two alpha males vying for the limelight — but it won’t be long before the gambit goes off the rails.

Critics took notice of Cruz and Banderas, describing their colorful performances as truly “letting loose” and Cruz specifically as “fizzy, frenzied, physically elastic inventiveness”. In a review for The Playlist, the headline describes OFFICIAL COMPETITION as “a crowd-pleasing comedy that skewers film-world pretensions”, with critic Sophie Monks Kaufman further explaining, “it is a credit to Cohn and Duprat’s skillful direction that the uniformly excellent cast is on message regarding the precise nature of this comedy. It is calibrated to be deadpan but not sardonic, and ridiculous without being farcical.”

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas shine together onscreen in OFFICIAL COMPETITION. Their chemistry is undeniable, and we believe US audiences will be delighted to see them come together in this crowd-pleasing film.”

“We hope that the American public will have fun and surprise with this acid comedy and discover a new acting side of Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas. Going hand in hand with IFC Films, together with our international distributor Protagonist Pictures, is already a guarantee of success,” has said Marta Ezpeleta, Director of The Mediapro Studio Distribution.

Protagonist’s CCO George Hamilton said, “A film as special as Official Competition deserves an equally special home, and we can think of no one better than our friends at IFC to share this whip-smart satire with US audiences.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films’ President Arianna Bocco with CAA Media Finance, Protagonist’s CCO George Hamilton and COO James Pugh and Manny Nunez on behalf of the filmmakers. Protagonist Pictures represented worldwide sales.

IFC FILMS AND FILMNATION ENTERTAINMENT WIN BIDDING WAR FOR U.S. RIGHTS TO ‘HAPPENING’

IFC FILMS AND FILMNATION ENTERTAINMENT WIN BIDDING WAR FOR U.S. RIGHTS TO ‘HAPPENING’, VENICE GOLDEN LION WINNER DIRECTED BY AUDREY DIWAN

NEW YORK, NY (October 4, 2021) – IFC Films President Arianna Bocco and FilmNation Entertainment’s CEO Glen Basner announced today that they are acquiring U.S. rights to French writer-director Audrey Diwan’s sophomore feature HAPPENING. The film marks Diwan’s arrival as a major talent and was written by Diwan with Marcia Romano as an adaptation of Annie Ernaux’s semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. HAPPENING had its world premiere at the 2021 Venice Film Festival where Diwan took home the festival’s top prize, the coveted Golden Lion, an early indicator of Oscar® prospects in years past. Diwan’s film was the unanimous choice from the jury that included recent Oscar® winners Bong Joon Ho and Chloé Zhao. HAPPENING is poised to be a major contender for France’s official Oscar® entry for Best International Film. HAPPENING was produced by Rectangle Productions’ Édouard Weil (Declaration of War, Love, Climax, Vortex) and co-produced by Srab Films (Les Miserables). IFC Films will release the film theatrically in early 2022.

HAPPENING is set in France, 1963. Anne is a bright young student with a promising future ahead of her. But when she falls pregnant, she sees the opportunity to finish her studies and escape the constraints of her social background disappearing. With her final exams fast approaching and her belly growing, Anne resolves to act, even if she has to confront shame and pain, even if she must risk prison to do so.

The critical reception out of Venice was explosive, describing the film as ‘timely’, ‘important’, ‘uncompromising’, and touting Diwan as a major talent. In his review for The Hollywood Reporter, David Rooney said, “HAPPENING is a slice of clear-eyed French social-realism that will be meaningful to anyone who cares about personal freedoms.”

IFC Films has a long-standing history of supporting and releasing films from Europe’s premiere filmmakers. Notably the Palme d’Or winners Abdellatif Kechiche’s BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR and Jacques Audiard’s DHEEPAN, as well as one of the Dardenne Brothers’ highest grossing film of their career, TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT, which landed an Oscar® nomination for Marion Cotillard. IFC Films made a splash at Cannes this year with three of the buzziest films of the festival including Mia Hansen-Løve’s BERGMAN ISLAND set to release this month, as well as the new Audiard PARIS, 13TH DISTRICT and the most talked about festival film of the season, BENEDETTA from Paul Verhoeven which will open theatrically December 3rd. Most recently, IFC Films released THE PAINTED BIRD which was shortlisted for the Best International Feature category at the 92nd Academy Awards.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “Audrey has crafted an award-winning film that puts a face on the choices women have to make, achieving something incredibly rare and rewarding in its powerful depiction of humanity. We look forward to working with Audrey, Glen and the entire filmmaking team to bring this film to the widest audience possible in the US.”

Glen Basner, CEO of FilmNation Entertainment said, “Audrey’s stunning and powerful film could not be more timely and we are thrilled to collaborate with Arianna and her team at IFC Films to bring this emotional cinematic experience to US audiences.”

Director Audrey Diwan added, “Through the lens of IFC Films and FilmNation, I realized what HAPPENING could represent to audiences in the U.S. I feel incredibly supported by this alliance, whose common goal is to take this story to new heights and champion my artistic vision. Arianna Bocco and Glen Basner have both long advocated for compelling and important films, which assures me this partnership that we are about to embark on together will be an extremely exciting one.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films’ President Arianna Bocco with CAA Media Finance and Wild Bunch on behalf of the filmmakers. Wild Bunch International is handling international sales.

IFC FILMS SWEEPS UP NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS FOR ADRIEN BRODY CRIME THRILLER “CLEAN”

IFC FILMS SWEEPS UP NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS FOR ADRIEN BRODY CRIME THRILLER “CLEAN”

NEW YORK, NY (September 1, 2021) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to Paul Solet’s crime drama Clean, starring Academy Award-winner Adrien Brody, who developed and produced the film through his production company, Fable House. IFC Films will release the film in 2022.

A longtime passion project for Adrien Brody, who also acts as producer, co-writer, and composer, Clean is directed and co-written by Paul Solet. The film stars Brody, Glenn Fleshler, Richie Merritt, Ari Chandler-DuPont, Mykelti Williamson, RZA, Michelle Wilson, and John Bianco, and is produced by Daniel Sollinger and Adrien Brody alongside Paul Solet and Elliot Brody.

Grappling with the tragic loss of his daughter and haunted by nightmares from his own criminal past, Clean (Adrien Brody) attempts to live a quiet life of service, caring for his community as a sanitation worker and acting as a mentor to his young neighbor. When local gang violence puts his neighbor’s life in danger, it ignites a return to the violence and darkness that he has struggled to put behind him. Forced to reconcile with his past to save those he has grown to care for, Clean might very well save himself in the process.

Originally slated to bow at the canceled 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, Clean made its world premiere in the Spotlight section of this year’s festival, with Brody and Solet’s collaboration attracting notice from critics. In a review for Screen Anarchy, Andrew Mack wrote, “Brody and Solet give us a character who bears the emotional brunt of his past, his torment,” adding, “not content with just delivering a thriller that depends on excitement, they’ve made a compact vision of the ‘Man With a Past’ type thriller and given it more emotional heft than most of its predecessors combined”.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, said, “With thrilling neo-noir elements and a powerful redemptive arc, Clean has all the grit of a classic crime drama with real depth at its core, and it’s a truly collaborative vision from Paul Solet and Adrien Brody. We’re excited to be partnering with Paul and Adrien for the release of this film.”

“I couldn’t be more pleased that Clean has found a home at IFC Films. Arianna and her team have proven time and again their ability to successfully bring deep and nuanced material to an audience,” said Adrien Brody. “From script to screen, I’ve never been more involved in the creation of a film. I feel this labor of love is in the best hands possible, and I look forward to the next stage of the journey together.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films President Arianna Bocco with CAA Media Finance acting on behalf of the filmmakers.

Hadaway’s bold debut feature is based on personal experience as a competitive collegiate rower, and has been hailed as unapologetic and raw, posing provocative questions about the expectations imposed on young women in America and the psychologically damaging effects of a culture that encourages the pursuit of being ‘the best’ no matter the cost.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “We’re thrilled to introduce Lauren Hadaway to U.S. audiences with her stunning and personal debut feature THE NOVICE. Isabelle Fuhrman’s knockout performance will speak to audiences who are perfectly primed for this devastating yet all too familiar story of striving for greatness.”

Director Hadaway added, “I have visceral memories of being a 16-year-old wannabe filmmaker in small town Texas and watching IFC – it was my only way to see independent films that I couldn’t find at the local video store or movie theater. 15 years later, I’m proud to say that my first film is a part of the IFC family.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films’ President Arianna Bocco and Director of Acquisitions Aijah Keith with CAA Media Finance and XYZ Films on behalf of the filmmakers.

Hadaway is represented by CAA and Bellevue Productions.

IFC FILMS PICKS UP U.S. RIGHTS TO 2021 TRIBECA THRILLER ‘CATCH THE FAIR ONE’

IFC FILMS PICKS UP U.S. RIGHTS TO 2021 TRIBECA THRILLER ‘CATCH THE FAIR ONE’ STARRING REAL-LIFE BOXING WORLD CHAMPION KALI REIS IN A BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE
PRODUCED BY ‘NOMADLAND’ OSCAR WINNER MOLLYE ASHER AND EP DARREN ARONOFSKY

NEW YORK, NY (August 4, 2021) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring U.S. rights to CATCH THE FAIR ONE from director Josef Kubota Wladyka (MANOS SUCIAS, NARCOS), starring real-life professional boxer, Kali “K.O.” Reis, in a raw breakout performance. Reis is the first Indigenous fighter to win the International Boxing Association middleweight crown and is currently the WBA Super lightweight champion. CATCH THE FAIR ONE world premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival and is the second feature from Josef Kubota Wladyka, who previously won Tribeca’s “Best New Narrative Director” for his first feature. The film scored strong critical notices at Tribeca 2021 and went on to win the Audience Award and a Special Jury mention for Reis’ performance.

Written by Wladyka from a story developed with Reis, the film also stars Daniel Henshall, Tiffany Chu, Michael Drayer, Shelito Vincent, Lisa Emery, Kimberly Guerrero, and Kevin Dunn. It is produced by recent Academy Award winner Mollye Asher (NOMADLAND) of The Population, Kimberly Parker (THE LAST BLACK MAN IN SAN FRANCISCO), and Wladyka, with Darren Aronofsky (THE WRESTLER) executive producing alongside Mynette Louie, Derek Nguyen, Ari Handel, Cat Hobbs, James Hausler, Charles Stiefel, Todd Stiefel, Michael D’Alto, Chris Triana, Claude Amadeo, Shaun Sanghani, Sam Bisbee, and Arturo Castro. IFC Films is planning to release the film in 2022.

A propulsive, edge-of-your-seat thriller, CATCH THE FAIR ONE follows Kaylee “K.O.” Uppashaw (Kali Reis), an Indigenous former boxer, when she discovers that her missing sister is possibly alive and circulating in a trafficking network. She plugs herself into this dark and dangerous world to find her. Kaylee’s strength and determination are tested as she fights the real fight of her life—to find her sister and make her family whole again. A positive review from The Playlist’s Robert Daniels says, “CATCH THE FAIR ONE, a textured story of how festering loss leads to unblinking resolution for justice, wins in a knockout.”

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “CATCH THE FAIR ONE plays like a beautifully-crafted thriller while shining much needed light on a sadly prevalent issue in North America – the trafficking of Indigenous women – and we were absolutely floored by Josef Kubota Wladyka’s handling of such emotional subject matter. We’re so glad we have the opportunity to usher in a new talent to the IFC family with Wladyka and the raw and brutally powerful performance from newcomer Kali Reis and to continue working with this amazing producing team.”

Director Joseph Kubota Wladyka added, “All these years living in NYC and walking down 6th Avenue, I’ve dreamt of having a film up on the marquee at the IFC Center. I am so excited to be working with IFC Films for the distribution of CATCH THE FAIR ONE. I’ve always admired the bold and unique films they’ve put out into the world, and we can’t wait for people to see the film.”

The deal was negotiated by IFC Films’ President Arianna Bocco and Director of Acquisitions Aijah Keith with Andrew Herwitz, President of The Film Sales Company, on behalf of the filmmakers.

IFC FILMS AND BANKSIDE FILMS ANNOUNCE ‘FLUX GOURMET’ HAS WRAPPED PRODUCTION

IFC FILMS AND BANKSIDE FILMS ANNOUNCE PETER STRICKLAND’S LATEST AUTEURIST FEAST ‘FLUX GOURMET’ HAS WRAPPED PRODUCTION, LANDING WITH IFC FILMS FOR NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS
STARRING ASA BUTTERFIELD AND GWENDOLINE CHRISTIE

NEW YORK, NEW YORK (July 8, 2021) – IFC Films, Bankside Films, and Head Gear/Metrol Technology have wrapped production on Peter Strickland’s latest film, FLUX GOURMET. The film will be released with IFC Films across North America, who have previously collaborated with Strickland on his explosive English-language debut BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO (2012) and follow-up feature THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY (2014), which both earned critical acclaim upon release and have subsequently garnered a fiercely loyal cult following leading up to his most recent film IN FABRIC (2018).

FLUX GOURMET stars Asa Butterfield (Sex Education, Hugo), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones, In Fabric), Ariane Labed (Alps, Attenberg), Fatma Mohamed (Berberian Sound Studio, The Duke of Burgundy, In Fabric), and Makis Papadimitriou (Chevalier). Leo Bill and Richard Bremmer co-star. This marks Strickland’s fifth film, and third with IFC Films, who plan to release the film in 2022.

FLUX GOURMET was produced by Serena Armitage of Red Breast Productions and Pietro Greppi of Lunapark Pictures, and co-financed by IFC Films, Bankside Films, and Head Gear Films/Metrol Technology. Serving as executive producers are Arianna Bocco and Betsy Rodgers of IFC Films, Stephen Kelliher & Sophie Green of Bankside Films, Phil Hunt & Compton Ross of Head Gear Films/Metrol Technology, Ian Benson of Blue Bear. Bankside Films will handle international sales.

SYNOPSIS: At an institute devoted to culinary and alimentary performance, a collective finds themselves embroiled in power struggles, artistic vendettas and gastrointestinal disorders.

Director Peter Strickland said, “FLUX GOURMET came about through a personal frustration with how alimentary disorders or food allergies have been comically portrayed in some films, and without wanting to embark on a finger-wagging mission, I wanted to write something devoted to the disruptions of the stomach whilst attempting to maintain a degree of dignity to deeply private and embarrassing symptoms.”

IFC Films President Arianna Bocco added, “Peter Strickland’s films are unmistakable in their visual style and brilliant narratives and he consistently confronts audiences in a way that challenges and rewards each time. We are thrilled to continue to work with such a singular talent as Peter, and to partner with Bankside Films and the incredible filmmaking team who worked so hard to get this film off the ground.”

Stephen Kelliher and Sophie Green of Bankside Films added, “Following IN FABRIC, we are thrilled to be continuing our relationship with Peter Strickland, one the most original and commanding voices in cinema today. We couldn’t be happier to partner with IFC Films on this film from its very inception and to be working with them as financiers and executive producers on the project.”

Written & Directed by newcomer Jonah Feingold

Starring Francesca Reale, Jaboukie Young-White, Catherine Cohen, Brian Muller & Jerry Ferrara

NEW YORK, NEW YORK (June 9, 2021) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to the millennial rom-com Dating & New York, written and directed by Jonah Feingold in his feature directorial debut. An official selection of the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival, Dating & New York will make its World Premiere at the festival this Sunday, June 13. IFC Films will release the film theatrically, on digital platforms, and Cable VOD September 2021.

With a stand-out cast of emerging actors and comedians, Dating & New York stars Francesca Reale (Stranger Things), Jaboukie Young-White (The Daily Show with Trevor Noah), Catherine Cohen (Seek Treatment podcast), Brian Muller, and Jerry Ferrara (Entourage). Rounding out the cast is Arturo Castro (Broad City, Alternatino), Alex Moffat (Saturday Night Live), Taylor Hill, Yedoye Travis, Sondra James, Sohina Sidhu, and Eva Victor. The film is produced by Joaquin Acrich and co-produced by Katie Schiller and Kieran Altmann (Shiva Baby), and executive produced by Spencer Barkoff, Jerry Ferrara, Tracy Kopulsky, Matthew Lev, Mason Novick, Francesca Reale, Craig Swidler, Sam Weinstein and Jaboukie Young-White.

Once upon a time in New York City, single millennials Milo (Jaboukie Young-White) and Wendy (Francesca Reale) are thrown together by a dating app at what might be the worst, most complicated time for romance in their lives. After the requisite ghosting following a one-night stand, the magic of New York pulls them back together, and the jaded pair draws up a friends with benefits contract to avoid the pitfalls of a relationship. With one foot in the single life, their intentions and inner dating demons are tested as they run into exes, exchange profound text messages, and contend with a seemingly perfect new relationship between their best friends. For Wendy and Milo, their fate is decided when one of them catches real feelings, and the two must figure out how to remain friends, knowing they love one another, or decide to never text each other again.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “Jonah’s take on dating in the app age is both incredibly funny and refreshingly optimistic, with shades of Nora Ephron and classic romantic comedies. It’s also an amazing showcase for so many young comedians, especially Jaboukie Young-White, and a perfect New York City film to launch at the Tribeca Film Festival. We’re so pleased to be partnering with Jonah for his debut feature.”

Director Jonah Feingold added, “Those wishing stars in storybooks I grew up reading might actually work… It’s a dream come true to partner with IFC. They immediately blew us away with their vision and sincere passion towards our fairy-tale feel-good romantic comedy about modern romance in a time when it couldn’t be more complicated. Our cast and crew had a blast making this film, and we’re so excited to be in the IFC family.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films’ Director of Acquisitions Aijah Keith and Acquisitions Coordinator Adam Koehler with UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers.

IFC FILMS NABS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO PAUL VERHOEVEN’S CANNES COMPETITION FILM “BENEDETTA”

IFC FILMS NABS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO PAUL VERHOEVEN’S CANNES COMPETITION FILM “BENEDETTA” AHEAD OF WORLD PREMIERE
NEW YORK, NY (May 27, 2021) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to the erotic thriller Benedetta, directed by Paul Verhoeven. Verhoeven’s first directorial effort since his 2016 film Elle, Benedetta entangles sexuality, religion, and human ambition in its story of a young novitiate in 17th century Italy who begins an affair with another nun. IFC Films plans to release the film this year.

Written by Verhoeven and David Birke (Elle), the film is inspired by historian Judith C. Brown’s non-fiction book Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy and is produced by Said Ben Said for SBS Production, Michel Merkt, and Pathé. The film stars Virginie Efira alongside Daphne Patakia, Lambert Wilson, Olivier Rabourdin, Clotilde Courau, Hervé Pierre, and Charlotte Rampling (45 Years).

In the late 17th century, with plague ravaging the land, Benedetta Carlini (Virginie Efira) joins the convent in Pescia, Tuscany, as a novice. Tormented by religious and erotic visions and capable from an early age of performing miracles, Benedetta’s impact on life in the community is immediate and momentous.

Originally slated to make its world premiere at the cancelled 2020 Cannes Film Festival, Benedetta will now arrive on the Croisette this July, where it will compete for the Palme d’Or. This will mark Verhoeven’s third Cannes bow, following Elle in 2016 and Basic Instinct, which opened the festival in 1992.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “Benedetta walks the line between the sacred and the profane, and in the hands of visionary filmmaker Paul Verhoeven, it’s a provocative thriller that will entice audiences everywhere. We couldn’t be more excited to be working with Verhoeven, Said Ben Said, Pathé, and the stellar production team to launch the film in North America this year.”

Producers Pathé and SBS added, “We are thrilled to partner with the very talented team at IFC on this exceptional Verhoeven film. We feel it really is the right home for the film in the US and the long expertise of the IFC team is a great asset to optimize the launch and visibility of Benedetta.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films President Arianna Bocco and Director of Acquisitions Aijah Keith with Marie Laure Montironi, Executive Vice President International Sales at Pathé.
