IFC FILMS TAKE NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS ON ‘R.M.N.’

IFC FILMS TAKE NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS ON ‘R.M.N.’ FROM PALME D’OR WINNING DIRECTOR CRISTIAN MUNGIU AHEAD OF CANNES PREMIERE

‘R.M.N.’ IS THE FIFTH COLLABORATION BETWEEN MUNGIU AND IFC FILMS

CANNES, FRANCE (MAY 17, 2022) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to R.M.N., from award winning writer, director and producer Cristian Mungiu ahead of its world premiere in Cannes. The acquisition marks the fifth time IFC Films and Mungiu have partnered on distribution. The film stars Marin Grigore and Judith State. R.M.N. is

produced by Cristian Mungiu with Mobra Films and executive produced by Tudor Reu. Co-producers include Pascal Caucheteux and Gregoire Sorlat of Why Not Productions, Sean Wheelan of Filmgate Films, Anthony Muir and Kristina Börjeson of Film I Väst, and Delphine Tomson of Les Films Du Fleuve. IFC Films will release the film theatrically in 2022.

A few days before Christmas, having quit his job in Germany, Matthias (Marin Grigore) returns to his multi-ethnic Transylvanian village. He wishes to involve himself more in the education of his son, Rudi, left for too long in the care of his mother, Ana, and to rid the boy of the unresolved fears that have taken hold of him. He’s preoccupied with his old father, Otto and also eager to see his ex-lover, Csilla (Judith State). When a few new workers are hired at the small factory that Csilla manages, the peace of the community is disturbed, underlying fears grip the adults, and frustrations, conflicts and passions erupt through the thin veneer of apparent understanding and calm.

Mungiu’s first feature OCCIDENT premiered in Quinzaine Réalisateurs in 2002. In 2007 he was awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS. He next returned to Cannes in 2009 as a writer, producer, and co-director with the collective episodic film TALES FROM THE GOLDEN AGE.LHis next feature BEYOND THE HILLS (2012) won Best Screenplay and Best Actress and was later shortlisted for Best International Feature for the 85th Academy Awards. He returned to Cannes in 2016 with GRADUATION and won Best Director.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “This Cannes marks the 15th anniversary of when IFC Films started working with Cristian for the first time after the premiere of Palme D’or winning 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS. He is one of the best directors working in cinema today and his incredible body of work has made a lasting impression on the global stage. We are so honored he has made IFC Films his home once again. We were absolutely blown away by the R.M.N. and are delighted to work with Cristian to bring the film to North American audiences.”

Of the acquisition, Director Cristian Mungiu said, ““I am very happy that 15 years after 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS I am back in Cannes and part of the Official Selection. It means even more that I am able to continue working with the people who have stood by me all these years, in my attempt to make my films reach as many people as possible, in as many theaters as possible .I hope they will help me communicate that once again through a story set in a tiny little place, I try to speak about us, today. I think it’s also good to check what are the limits of our freedom as filmmakers today in a world where political correctness started setting limits about what is appropriate to say – and what is not. I feel I owe one explanation: RMN in English is NMR: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance – basically a brain investigation. Given how the world looks today, I feel we need one.”

The deal was negotiated by SVP of Acquisitions and Productions for IFC Films, Scott Shooman with Eva Diederix on behalf of Wild Bunch, and CAA Media Finance. Wild Bunch is handling international sales.

IFC FILMS TAKES WORLDWIDE RIGHTS TO ASTOUNDING SXSW HIT, AUDIENCE AWARD WINNER ‘BAD AXE’

IFC FILMS TAKES WORLDWIDE RIGHTS TO ASTOUNDING SXSW HIT, AUDIENCE AWARD WINNER ‘BAD AXE’ DIRECTED BY DAVID SIEV

NEW YORK, NEW YORK (April 13, 2022) – IFC Films announced today it is acquiring worldwide rights (excluding Nordics) to the SXSW award-winning documentary BAD AXE, directed by David Siev, making his debut feature. Returning home to rural Michigan, Siev captures an astonishing, personal look at his Asian-American family’s quest to keep their local staple restaurant and American dream alive, amidst the backdrop of pandemic and Trump-era political and racial tensions. Captured with arresting intimacy, the film is a stunning portrait of a family, a community, a nation and a world – and testament to those who are there for you when all else fades away. Produced by Jude Harris (HALF THE PICTURE, 69: THE SAGA OF DANNY HERNANDEZ), Diane Quon (MINDING THE GAP, FINDING YINGYING), Katarina Vasquez (YEAR ZERO), and David Siev (BAD TRIP, YEAR ZERO). Executive Produced by Jeff Tremaine (JACKASS FOREVER, THE DIRT), Shanna Zablow Newton (JACKASS FOREVER, BAD TRIP), Marci Wiseman (BATHTUBS OVER BROADWAY), Daniel J. Chalfen (PRAY AWAY, UNITED SKATES), Dawn Bonder (I DIDN’T SEE YOU THERE), Michael Meinhold (YEAR ZERO) and Tim Chow.

BAD AXE celebrated its world premiere at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award and received Special Jury Recognition for Exceptional Intimacy in Storytelling in the Documentary Feature Competition. The festival jury noted, “Stories centered on the pursuit of the “American Dream” abound. Rarely do they portray the sacrifices and recurrent trials that the promise of a better life entails the way director David Siev accomplishes. For its ability to reveal something unexpected about the American fabric and the American family, BAD AXE deserves celebration.” IFC Films will release the film in theaters and on VOD in 2022.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “David’s love letter to his hometown of BAD AXE, is a powerful and humanistic portrayal of a family navigating life through an historic time. We’re thrilled to partner on this multi-layered documentary that is exactly the kind of independent cinema we are proud to foster. Many films speak about social justice and the American dream, but rarely are we granted such perspective and insight to those living through the personal sacrifice it sometimes takes to live in America. We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome David and his family to the IFC Films family.”

David Siev, director of BAD AXE said “This is a deeply personal project and I’m grateful for IFC Films’ passion for my vision and the way that they have embraced my family and our story. IFC’s commitment to independent, director-driven films shines through in all of their acquisitions. I’m honored for BAD AXE to join their extraordinary slate.”

In a review for Roger Ebert, Brian Tallerico praised the filmmaker’s “deft editor’s eye…opening not just his door but his heart” adding that the result is “a deeply personal film that feels essential when we tell the story of how 2020 shaped this country.” Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter also described the film as “Potent and personal” and “a love letter to overcoming adversity with the help of family, of business, of identity.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by Adam Koehler, Manager of Acquisitions at IFC Films with Andrew Herwitz, President of The Film Sales Company on behalf of the filmmakers.

IFC FILMS TAKES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO “GOD’S COUNTRY”

IFC FILMS TAKES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO “GOD’S COUNTRY” STARRING BAFTA® AND EMMY AWARD WINNER THANDIWE NEWTON IN A CAREER-DEFINING PERFORMANCE FROM DIRECTOR JULIAN HIGGINS

THE CONTEMPORARY WESTERN HAD ITS WORLD PREMIERE AT THE 2022 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL

NEW YORK, NY (February 11, 2022) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to Julian Higgins’ feature debut GOD’S COUNTRY after its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. The film stars BAFTA® and Emmy Award winner Thandiwe Newton (WESTWORLD, CRASH), Jeremy Bobb (THE OUTSIDER), Joris Jarsky (THE LITTLE THINGS), Jefferson White (YELLOWSTONE), Kai Lennox (THE GIRL FROM PLAINVILLE) and Tanaya Beatty (THROUGH BLACK SPRUCE). Based on the short story “Winter Light” by acclaimed author James Lee Burke, the script by Higgins and Shaye Ogbonna is complimented by a distinguished original score by DeAndre James Allen-Toole and breathtaking cinematography by Andrew Wheeler. Cold Iron Pictures’ CEO Miranda Bailey and Amanda Marshall are producing the film, along with Halee Bernard and Higgins. Anthony Ciardelli and The Film Arcade’s Jason Beck will serve as executive producers. IFC Films will release the film theatrically in Fall of 2022.

GOD’S COUNTRY is a character-driven thriller set in the snowy wilderness of the American West. Thandiwe Newton plays Sandra Guidry, a Black professor living and working in a rural college town. She discovers a mysterious red truck parked in her driveway and soon learns it belongs to a pair of local hunters seeking to enter the forest behind her house. Sandra turns them away politely but firmly – her experience tells her these are not the sort of men to welcome freely into her world. But they won’t take no for an answer, and soon Sandra finds herself drawn into an escalating battle of wills that puts her most deeply held values to the test.

Thandiwe Newton’s performance has been hailed by The Hollywood Reporter as ‘arresting’ and Ronda Penrice of The Wrap says, “Thandiwe Newton shines…the weight of this film is on [her] shoulders. And, as always, she delivers.” Brian Tallerico of Roger Ebert further declares GOD’S COUNTRY as, “one of this Sundance’s best films.”

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “Thandiwe Newton delivers one of the most beautifully complex and realistic portraits of a modern-day woman dealing with grief and isolation within the confines of a traditional western turned on its head. Julian Higgins has impressively directed a taut thriller that will surely keep audiences on the edge of their seats.”

Director Julian Higgins added, “IFC Films has established a deep commitment to independent filmmakers and a passion for movies that engage and challenge audiences. GOD’S COUNTRY has been a yearslong labor of love for our entire team, and I am truly thrilled we’ve found the perfect home.”

Higgins is a Los Angeles-based director, writer, and producer. His short films have screened around the globe and won dozens of prizes, including the gold medal Student Academy Award, two Student Emmy Awards, and the grand prize of Ron Howard’s “Project Imagination” Contest. His most recent short, WINTER LIGHT, was a top ten finalist for the Oscar. A New Hampshire native, Julian holds a BFA in Film from Emerson College and an MFA in Directing from the American Film Institute. He currently teaches directing at both institutions.

The deal was negotiated by Scott Shooman, SVP of Acquisitions and Productions for IFC Films and Jessica Lacy of ICM Partners on behalf of the filmmakers.

IFC FILMS AND SHUDDER BUYS ANDREW SEMANS’ BOLD SUNDANCE HIT ‘RESURRECTION’

IFC FILMS AND SHUDDER BUYS ANDREW SEMANS’ BOLD SUNDANCE HIT ‘RESURRECTION’ STARRING REBECCA HALL AND TIM ROTH IN CAREER BEST PERFORMANCES

One of the Most Talked About Films at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival

NEW YORK, NY (January 28, 2022) – IFC Films and Shudder announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to psychological thriller RESURRECTION written and directed by Andrew Semans (Nancy, Please), starring Rebecca Hall, Tim Roth, Grace Kaufman and Michael Esper. The film premiered this week at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival to widespread critical acclaim, rapidly becoming one of the most talked about films at the festival. IFC Films will release the film in theaters and on VOD with Shudder taking the first streaming window.

RESURRECTION’s Margaret (Rebecca Hall) leads a successful and orderly life, perfectly balancing the demands of her busy career and single parenthood to her fiercely independent daughter Abbie. Everything is under control. But that careful balance is upended when an unwelcome shadow from her past, David (Tim Roth) returns, carrying with him the horrors of Margaret’s past. Battling her rising fear, Margaret must confront the monster she’s evaded for two decades who has come to conclude their unfinished business. Writer-director Andrew Semans delivers pure havoc one moment and feelings of deep familiarity the next, creating a film that promises a gripping emotional journey fused with a grand guignol style living nightmare.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “Rebecca Hall and Tim Roth give career-defining performances in Andrew Semans’ revelatory and diabolically entertaining RESURRECTION. We are so thrilled to partner with Andrew and the amazing producing team to bring a film to audiences that will completely defy expectation.”

Director Andrew Semans added, “IFC Films has released some of the greatest films of the past two decades. It’s a great honor to be working with their remarkable team and a great pleasure to know that RESURRECTION will be in such good hands.”

“Rebecca Hall gives a performance for the ages and Tim Roth is absolutely chilling in this masterful film by Andrew Semans. People will be talking about this film for years to come, and we’re thrilled to be able to bring it to Shudder members,” said Craig Engler, GM for Shudder.

RESURRECTION was produced by Tango, Secret Engine, Square Peg and Rosetory. Produced by Tory Lenosky, Alex Scharfman, Drew Houpt, Lars Knudsen, Tim Headington and Lia Buman and executive produced by Max Silva, Neil Shah, Michael M. McGuire, Lucas Joaquin, Tyler Campellone, Christine D’Souza Gelb, and Rebecca Hall.

Rebecca Hall has received rave reviews for one of the most talked about performances at this year’s festival, with Esther Zuckerman at Thrillist stating the film “features a performance from Hall that is absolutely mesmerizing, proving her yet again to be one of the best actors of her generation. RESURRECTION is absolutely WILD.” David Ehrlich at Indiewire further describes the chemistry of the characters as, “a tug-of-war that allows RESURRECTION to be a heady psychodrama one minute and a shout-at-the-screen romp the next on its way to an ending that hits both notes at the same time”.

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films’ Head of Acquisitions and Production Scott Shooman with WME Independent and 2AM on behalf of the filmmakers.

IFC Films is home to the most nuanced director-driven cinema of the last 20 years, and more specifically some of the most exciting new voices in genre film of the last decade, including Natalie Erika James’ RELIC, Dave Franco’s THE RENTAL, Jennifer Kent’s THE BABADOOK, Carlo Mirabella Davis’ SWALLOW, and the latest film from Peter Strickland premiering at the upcoming Berlinale, FLUX GOURMET.
