Hellbound Garners International Attention With Official Invitations to 3 World Renowned Film Festivals!

Hellbound Garners International Attention With Official Invitations to 3 World Renowned Film Festivals!

Receiving worldwide buzz for its unique and imaginative story, Hellbound heads for London, Toronto and Busan!

Hellbound tells the story of supernatural beings appearing and condemning people to hell resulting in a religious group gaining prominence while others investigate the truth behind this strange phenomenon. The gripping series continues to receive a lot of global love and attention with official invitations to the 46th Toronto International Film Festival, the 26th Busan International Film Festival, and now the 65th BFI London Film Festival in 2021.

Founded in 1957, the BFI London Film Festival is hosted by the British Film Institute and the city of London. It is the largest film festival in England and has featured Korean films like Memoir of a Murderer, On the Beach at Night Alone, The Spy Gone North, Believer, Burning, and House of Hummingbird. BFI London Film Festival selected Hellbound for the LFF Series Thrill Strand. The Thrill strand introduces “nerve-shredders that will get your adrenaline pumping and keep you on the edge of your seat.” They described Hellbound as a “a distinctive project from a strong creative visionary that will add a great texture to our programme.” Hellbound, the only Korean series to be selected, will have its first three episodes screened from October 15 to October 17.

Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) was founded in 1976 and is North America’s largest film festival and will introduce diverse genres and styles through new films from September 9 to September 18. Inaugurated in 2015, the PRIMETIME section which Hellbound will be a part of introduces works with exceptional stories and directing, as the line between television and film continues to blur and brings forth a new golden age. Hellbound is the first Korean series to be officially invited and this reflects director Yeon Sang-ho’s reputation for being a global storyteller as his works continue to get invited to international film festivals.

Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) is one of the largest international film festivals in Asia and the largest in Korea. This year, BIFF has launched the “On Screen” section for non-theatrical original content from online streaming services. The festival said, “The section aims to precisely reflect the current state of the market, which is expanding multi-directionally, while embracing the extended flow and value of cinema.” The 26th BIFF will be held from October 6 to October 15.

Raising expectations with its buzz, Hellbound is based on the 9.77-rated popular webtoon The Hellbound, with readers commending it as “the most shocking in webtoon history.” Director Yeon Sang-ho, who has built an exclusive universe of his own that encompasses various realms, and Choi Gyu-seok, who demonstrated insight for perceiving reality and storytelling as writer of Songgot, will team up to showcase an unprecedented world. Top-tier actors Yoo Ah-in, Kim Hyun-joo, Park Jeong-min, Won Jin-a, Yang Ik-june, Kim Do-yoon, Kim Sin-rock, Ryu Kyung-soo, Lee Re, and more make up the exceptional cast.

Hellbound will be available on Netflix upon its release in over 190 countries.

Why Southeast Asia Loves Korean Shows — And What to Expect Next

Why Southeast Asia Loves Korean Shows — And What to Expect Next

In Southeast Asia, Korean shows are very loved and some research has found they are watched more than Hollywood productions. In the last three months, on average, four of the top 10 titles on Netflix in Southeast Asia have been Korean. Why is that? Some have pointed to the appeal of storylines which show Asian heroines striving to express themselves personally and professionally — a theme which perhaps resonates with women in more traditional Southeast Asian societies.

But it is the quality and the diversity of the stories that impress me the most. They can range in genre and subject matter — from opposites-attract romantic comedies like Crash Landing On You and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha to military-themed dramas such as Descendants of the Sun and D.P.

And they can have wildly innovative storylines, like Move To Heaven, which is about trauma cleaners — incidentally, its star Tang Joon-sang is half-Malaysian — and the upcoming The Silent Sea (main picture), which sees Bae Doo-na and Gong Yoo heading to the moon on a perilous mission. This creative imagination, coupled with top quality acting and production values, has made hallyu — or the “Korean wave” — a phenomenon, not only in Southeast Asia, but across the world.

There will be even more surprising and creative stories in the next few months with Hellbound, a mystery thriller with supernatural elements and the first Korean series to be invited to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival; as well as My Name, a female-centered action noir adventure starring Nevertheless’ Han So-hee as you’ve never seen her before.

For me, however, the most rewarding Korean shows are those that provoke me to think deeper about societal issues. This is why I am looking forward to next month’s Squid Game, which addresses social and economic inequality, a topic that is top of mind in many countries in the world, including Southeast Asia.

Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter why we love these shows. What matters is there will be more, with Netflix’s $500M investment in Korean content this year. This means, no matter where you are — in Bangkok, Hanoi, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila or Singapore — you will continue to get the best of Korea, whether it’s on-the-go on your mobile device or sitting comfortably in your living room. All you need to do is sit back, relax and press “play”.

SEOUL, April 23, 2020 – Netflix, the world’s leading streaming entertainment service, has announced that it will produce a new Korean original series Hellbound (working title), which will be directed by Yeon Sang-ho who’s best known for his box office hit Train to Busan.
In Hellbound, supernatural beings appear out of nowhere to condemn people to hell. It doesn’t matter whether these events are a blessing or a curse: a new religious group is interpreting them all as the will of the divine. What unfolds through this predicament is an intense and highly-charged story about people who must survive under conditions of utter social chaos. The story was originally published as a webtoon, titled Hell or 지옥 in Korean, and has garnered a great deal of attention and acclaim. As a Netflix original series, Hellbound will take on a new form through the collaborative work of director Yeon Sang-ho and illustrator Choi Gyu-seok, the author of Songgot, a webtoon that was adapted as a television drama in 2015.
Yeon and Choi will together spearhead Hell (or 지옥)’s transformation from a webtoon into a Netflix original series. The duo will join forces on the script, while Yeon will also direct the production, in order to expand Hellbound upon the themes and views introduced in the webtoon. Choi is expected to exhibit his insight into social issues the way he did in Songgot. Besides his globally acclaimed 2016 film Train to Busan, Yeon Sang-ho has directed its sequel Peninsula, which will be released in Korean theaters in the coming months. Yeon also worked as the scriptwriter for The Cursed, a recent Korean TV drama series produced by Lezhin Studio.
Hellbound, produced by Lezhin Studio, will be available only on Netflix.
