HBO’s THE CRIME OF THE CENTURY, A Searing Investigation Revealing The Inner Workings Of The Multi-Billion Dollar Industry Behind The Opioid Epidemic, Debuts May 10

Academy Award(R) Winner Alex Gibney Directs The Two-Part Documentary

HBO’s THE CRIME OF THE CENTURY, a two-part documentary directed by Emmy(R) and Academy Award(R) winner Alex Gibney (HBO’s “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley,” “Going Clear: Scientology & the Prison of Belief”), and presented in association with The Washington Post, is a searing indictment of Big Pharma and the political operatives and government regulations that enabled over-production, reckless distribution and abuse of synthetic opiates. Debuting MONDAY, MAY 10 (9:00-10:50 p.m. ET/PT), with Part Two airing the following evening, the film explores the origins, extent, and fallout of one of the most devastating public health tragedies of our time, with half a million deaths from overdoses this century alone, revealing that America’s opioid epidemic is not a public health crisis that came out of nowhere.

THE CRIME OF THE CENTURY will debut on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

With the help of whistleblowers, insiders, newly-leaked documents, exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes access to investigations, and featuring expert input from medical professionals, journalists, former and current government agents, attorneys and pharmaceutical sales representatives, as well as sobering testimony from victims of opioid addiction, Gibney’s exposé posits that drug companies are in fact largely responsible for manufacturing the very crisis they profit from, to the tune of billions of dollars… and hundreds of thousands of lives.

The opioid crisis has resulted in a country ravaged by corporate greed and betrayed by some of its own elected officials, following the aggressive promotion of OxyContin, a highly addictive drug from family-owned pharmaceutical giant Purdue Pharma. Part One of the documentary focuses on how Purdue worked closely with the FDA to get the highly profitable pain medication approved for wider use, promoting its safety without sufficient evidence, and creating a campaign to redefine pain and how we treat it. When government regulators or Justice Department officials tried to mitigate the wrongdoing, Purdue Pharma and huge opioid distributors like Cardinal-Health would settle the cases, keeping the details private and continuing on unabated. As tens of thousands of people succumbed to opioid addiction, the fortunes built by the opiate business became the crime of the century, and the market that OxyContin had opened paved the way for even deadlier prescription drugs.

Contributing to Part One of THE CRIME OF THE CENTURY include author Patrick Radden Keefe; opioid specialist Dr. Andrew Kolodny; former Purdue sales rep. Mark Ross; Stanford addiction specialist Dr. Anne Lembke; Life Tree Pain Clinic founder Dr. Lynn Webster; Roy Bosley, whose wife died of an opioid overdose; author and NY Times reporter Barry Meier; primary care physician Dr. Art Van Zee; former Department of Justice official Paul Pelletier; and EMT Giles Sartin.

Part Two of THE CRIME OF THE CENTURY shines a spotlight on the mass marketing of the synthetic opioid fentanyl and examines the connections between drug manufacturers and government policy. While America’s silent epidemic was killing 40 people per day, Insys Therapeutics, an upstart opioid manufacturer of fentanyl, continued to bribe doctors to overprescribe. Startling video of sales retreats and promotional material speak to a deep cynicism among company employees and a disregard for the widespread, nefarious corporate practices. A complex scheme to defraud the insurance companies existed side by side with fraudulent marketing tactics while lawmakers – often flush with campaign donations from Big Pharma – worked to undermine law enforcement and turned a blind eye to the implications of a complex pipeline that delivers billions of opioid pills around the country.

Interweaving stories of personal tragedy from first responders, survivors and family members of opioid victims with the timeline of corporate greed and malfeasance, Part Two of THE CRIME OF THE CENTURY includes insights from former DEA agent Joe Rannazzisi; former DEA attorney Jonathan Novak; The Washington Post reporters Sari Horwitz, Scott Higham and Lenny Bernstein; Assistant U.S. Attorneys for Massachusetts David Lazarus, Nathaniel Yeager and Fred Wyshak; Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Ed Byrne; Resident Agent in Charge Lubbock Office, DEA Will Kimbell; former V.P. of Sales at Insys Alec Burlakoff; former Insys regional sales manager Sunrise Lee; and fentanyl dealer Caleb Lanier. Woven together, the character-driven stories form a larger narrative of shocking corruption.

Featuring extraordinary access to exclusive videos, whistleblowers and investigators, THE CRIME OF THE CENTURY includes:

· Never before-seen footage of Richard Sackler’s 2015 deposition for the Kentucky v. Purdue Pharma lawsuit

· Never before-seen company videos from Purdue Pharma and Insys Therapeutics

· Interviews with former DEA insiders and officials, including Joe Rannazzisi who was leading major investigations into complex pharmaceutical networks

· Exclusive interviews with former pharma sales reps who discuss in detail the unethical and illegal practices of bribing doctors and encouraging them to prescribe high doses of opioids. Among those interviewed is Insys VP of Sales Alec Burlakoff.

· Leaked Department of Justice documents showing detailed allegations of fraud, conspiracy and malfeasance by Purdue including improper contacts with an FDA Medical Officer (later hired by Purdue) who was part of the FDA approval process for OxyContin.

· Exclusive access to the DEA’s Narcotics Task Force Team 10 in San Diego

· Exclusive access to The Washington Post’s award-winning journalists and their investigative reporting on the origins and evolution of the opioid crisis, which uncovers astounding data, such as the fact that more than 100 billion doses of oxycodone and hydrocodone were shipped nationwide from 2006 through 2014.

HBO Documentary Films’ presents a Jigsaw Production in association with The Washington Post and Storied Media Group, THE CRIME OF THE CENTURY written and directed by Alex Gibney; produced by Alex Gibney, Sarah Dowland, and Svetlana Zill; executive produced by Stacey Offman, Richard Perello, Todd Hoffman, and Aaron Fishman; For HBO: senior producer, Tina Nguyen; executive producers, Nancy Abraham and Lisa Heller.

All-New Episode Of REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL Debuts April 20

For up-to-the-minute updates about REAL SPORTS, follow on Twitter at @RealSportsHBO or join the conversation using #RealSports, and on HBO.com/realsports and facebook.com/realsports.

April segments include:
“Marathon Man” – Longtime Boston Marathon race director Dave McGillivray has run in the historic event every year since 1973, having even completed the race just six months after having open-heart surgery. But when the Boston Marathon was cancelled for the first time ever due to the pandemic, McGillivray was left suddenly adrift until he found a new purpose that drew on his expertise organizing and directing massive events: overseeing operations at four mass vaccination sites in Massachusetts, where thousands of people are vaccinated every day, including at Gillette Stadium and Fenway Park. Correspondent Andrea Kremer reports. Producer: Nisreen Habbal.

“The Impossible Race” – One of the most treacherous races on the planet, the Barkley Marathons, known as “The Barkley,” is a 100-mile long event with 120,000 feet of climbs and descents that takes place around the perimeter of Frozen Head State Park in the mountains of Tennessee. With only 60 hours to complete the race, runners are tasked with navigating through unenviable conditions, including temperature swings, rain, and even snow. Mary Carillo speaks with Lazarus Lake, who conceived the event after James Earl Ray, the man who assassinated Martin Luther King Jr., escaped from a maximum-security prison in the same Tennessee mountains and only managed to travel eight miles in just under 60 hours before he was caught. “Laz,” as he’s known, mocked Ray, suggesting he could run 100 miles through the Tennessee mountains in that amount of time. And so the race was born. Producer: Jake Rosenwasser.

“Benched” – The absence of sports has left some young athletes without their structure, support system, physical outlet and sense of identity, which has contributed to a mental health crisis that has largely been overlooked against the backdrop of the pandemic. Kavitha Davidson reports on the rise in mental health disorders, including depression and anxiety, among young athletes as they navigate a world without sports. Producer: Maggie Burbank.

“Off Course” (Revisit) – While backcountry skiing has seen record growth in the midst of the pandemic, dangerous snow conditions have elevated the risk of avalanches, making this season one of the deadliest ever. Correspondent Jon Frankel reports. Producer: Daniel Litke.

The executive producer of REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL is Joe Perskie.

HBO Documentary Films’ Five-Part Series PRAY, OBEY, KILL Debuts April 12

HBO Documentary Films’ Five-Part Series PRAY, OBEY, KILL Debuts April 12

PRAY, OBEY, KILL, a gripping five-part documentary series from acclaimed investigative journalists Anton Berg and Martin Johnson, and directed by award-winning filmmaker Henrik Georgsson (“The Bridge”), revisits a complex Swedish murder case from 2004 that gained global attention. The series will debut with two back-to-back episodes on MONDAY, APRIL 12 (9:00-10:55 p.m. ET/PT), with a new episode airing subsequent Mondays at the same time on HBO and streaming on HBO Max.

On a cold night in January 2004, gunshots rang out across the remote Swedish village, Knutby, home to a small, tight-knit Pentecostal congregation, leaving a young woman murdered in her bed and her neighbor suffering from multiple bullet wounds. Attention soon turned towards the community – the victim’s husband, also the sect’s pastor, the victim’s 26-year-old nanny, and the sect’s leader known as “The Bride of Christ.”

The case gained instant international notoriety when the nanny confessed within days, claiming she was told to commit the acts of violence through a series of text messages from God. What soon emerged, however, was a tale of a scandalous love triangle and details of another suspicious death that had occurred years before. Behind it all were the mysterious actions of the sect’s leader who exerted an increasingly powerful pull over her congregation.

Tracing the chilling events of January 10, 2004, and the resulting police investigation, criminal trial, and its aftermath, PRAY, OBEY, KILL highlights Berg and Johnson’s meticulous re-examination of the case. Their investigation includes in-depth interviews with journalists and police investigators who covered the crimes, as well as former members of the Pentecostal sect, some of whom are speaking for the first time about the psychological and physical abuse they suffered. PRAY, OBEY, KILL revisits one of the most bizarre and confounding crimes in modern Swedish history, exploring new case theories, never-before-seen materials and exclusive interviews, ultimately shedding new light on the truth behind the crime.

“To me, the case and what really happened in Knutby is all about abuse of power – something I find extremely provocative,” says Anton Berg. Martin Johnson continues, “Throughout our work with the documentary, abuse of power has become the central theme – both within the Knutby sect and in the Swedish justice system.”

PRAY, OBEY, KILL is produced by Warner Bros ITVP Sweden for HBO Europe. The series is directed by Henrik Georgsson; produced by Ruth Reid for Warner Brothers ITVP; executive produced by Anton Berg, Martin Johnson and Martina Iacobaeus. For HBO Europe: executive producers, Hanne Palmquist, Hanka Kastelicová and Antony Root.
