‘GMA’ Sees Its Best Adults 25-54 Audience in More Than 3 Months

“Good Morning America” kicked off the 2022-2023 season ranked as America’s No. 1 morning newscast in Total Viewers (3.121 million) and Adults 25-54 (751,000) for the week of Sept. 19, 2022, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “GMA” won premiere week in Total Viewers for the 11th consecutive season and led in Adults 25-54 for the first time in 8 years — since the 2012-2013 and 2014-2015 seasons, respectively.

“GMA” outperformed “Today” (2.785 million) by 336,000, substantially increasing its lead from the year-ago premiere week (+425%; vs. 64,000) to its largest opening week lead in 7 years — since premiere week of the 2015-2016 season.

“GMA” posted across-the-board increases week to week: Total Viewers (+4% – 3.121 million vs. 2.991 million), Adults 25-54 (+5% – 751,000 vs. 718,000) and Adults 18-49 (+7% – 518,000 vs. 485,000), standing as the only morning newscast to grow in all key target demos. In addition, “GMA” delivered its strongest Adults 25-54 performance in more than 3 months — since w/o 5/30/22.

During the week, “GMA” (3.121 million, 751,000 and 518,000, respectively) beat “CBS Mornings” (2.376 million, 501,000 and 341,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+745,000), Adults 25-54 (+250,000) and Adults 18-49 (+177,000).

NOTE: On Monday (9/19/22), “Good Morning America” and NBC’s “Today” were preempted and “CBS Mornings” was retitled to “CBS Morn” due to live coverage of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth. The retitled telecast is excluded from the week and season averages. The weekly averages for all three programs are based on four days (Tuesday-Friday).

During the 2021-2022 season “Good Morning America Saturday” ranked as the No. 1 Saturday morning newscast in all key target demos: Total Viewers (2.754 million), Adults 25-54 (577,000) and Adults 18-49 (393,000) for the third straight year, based on Most Current Data from Nielsen Media Research. In fact, “GMA-Saturday” ranked No. 1 in overall viewers and in the key Adults news demo for the 10th year in a row – since the 2012-13 season.

“GMA Saturday” led “Saturday Today” in Total Viewers (+611,000 – 2.754 million vs. 2.143 million), Adults 25-54 (+100,000 – 577,000 vs. 477,000) and Adults 18-49 (+67,000 – 393,000 vs. 326,000).

In addition, “GMA Saturday” (2.754 million, 577,000 and 393,000, respectively) beat “CBS Saturday Morning” (1.821 million, 348,000 and 229,000) across the board: Total Viewers (+933,000), Adults 25-54 (+229,000) and Adults 18-49 (+164,000).

3rd Quarter 2022:

“Good Morning America Saturday” ranked as the No. 1 Saturday morning newscast during the 3rd Quarter 2022 in all key target demos: Total Viewers (2.626 million), Adults 25-54 (527,000) and Adults 18-49 (372,000) for the third year in a row, based on Most Current Data from Nielsen Media Research. “GMA Saturday” finished No. 1 during a 3rd quarter for the 11th straight year in both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 – since 3Q12. Overall, “GMA Saturday” has won the last 39 quarters in overall viewers and the last 37 in the key Adult news demo – since 1Q13 and 3Q13, respectively.

“GMA Saturday” outperformed “Saturday Today” (1.931 million, 412,000 and 274,000, respectively) by 695,000 Total Viewers, by 115,000 Adults 18-49 and by 98,000 Adults 18-49.

“GMA Saturday” beat “CBS Saturday Morning” (1.729 million, 316,000 and 205,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+897,000), Adults 25-54 (+211,000) and Adults 18-49 (+167,000).

“GMA Sunday”

2021-2022 Season:

ABC’s “Good Morning America Sunday” averaged 2.726 million Total Viewers, 553,000 Adults 25-54 and 371,000 Adults 18-49 during the 2021-2022 season, based on Most Current Data from Nielsen Media Research. “GMA Sunday” outperformed NBC’s “Sunday Today” (2.550 million, 495,000 and 326,000, respectively) by 176,000 Total Viewers, by 58,000 Adults 25-54 and by 78,000 Adults 18-49. “GMA Sunday” outperformed “Sunday Today” in overall viewers and in Adults 25-54 for the 9th straight season– since the 2013-14 season.

“GMA Sunday” increased its lead over “Sunday Today” versus the previous season in Total Viewers (+28% – 176,000 vs. 137,000), Adults 25-54 (+164% – 58,000 vs. 22,000) and Adults 18-49 (+137% – 45,000 vs. 19,000). In fact, “GMA Sunday” turned in its largest margins over the NBC program in 5 years in Adults 25-54 and in 7 years in Adults 18-49 – since the 2016-2017 and the 2014-2015 seasons, respectively.

“GMA Sunday” decreased its season margins with CBS’ “Sunday Morning” in Total Viewers (-7% – 2.607 million vs. 2.814 million), Adults 25-54 (-35% – 294,000 vs. 388,000) and Adults 18-49 (-24% – 183,000 vs. 240,000), delivering its closest performance ever with the CBS in both key Adult demos. “GMA Sunday” debuted in its current format in September 2004.

3rd Quarter 2022:

ABC’s “Good Morning America Sunday” led NBC’s “Sunday Today” across the board: Total Viewers, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49, during a 3rd quarter for the fifth year in row – since 3Q18.

In addition, “GMA Sunday” defeated NBC’s “Sunday Today” during the 3rd quarter for the 10th consecutive year in Total Viewers and for the 9th year in a row in Adults 25-54 – since 3Q13 and 3Q14, respectively.

Further, “GMA Sunday” delivered its largest 3rd quarter lead over the NBC program in Adults 25-54 in 3 years and biggest in Adults 18-49 in 7 years – since 3Q19 and 3Q15, respectively.

‘GMA’ Increases Its Total Viewer Advantage Over ‘Today’ Versus the Year-ago Quarter to Post Its Largest 3rd Quarter Lead in 7 Years

2021-2022 Season:
For the 2021-2022 season, “Good Morning America” (3.253 million) ranked as America’s No. 1 morning newscast in Total Viewers for the 10th year in a row, more than doubling its lead over NBC’s “Today” (3.018 million) versus last season (+124% – 235,000 vs. 105,000) to its largest in 7 years — since the 2014-2015 season.

In addition, “GMA” slashed its season margin with “Today” in Adults 25-54 by more than half (-63% – 31,000 vs. 84,000) to its closest performance in 7 years — since the 2014-2015 season.

During the 2021-2022 season, “GMA” featured a variety of exclusive interviews and engaging series focusing on small businesses and communities across the country, such as the “United States of Burgers” and the continuation of the “Rise and Shine Tour.” Major interviews throughout the season included co-anchor George Stephanopoulos’ exclusive interview with actor Alec Baldwin following the tragedy on the set of “Rust” and co-anchor Robin Roberts’ exclusive one-on-one interview with Ukraine’s first lady, Olena Zelenska. Co-anchor Michael Strahan traveled to Iceland, where he came face to face with local wildlife and highlighted the effects of climate change on the country as part of the “Extraordinary Earth” series and outer space. In June, the “GMA” partnered with BBC Studios to bring exclusive coverage in the United States of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

During the 2021-2022 season, “GMA” ranked No. 1 in 18 weeks, including leading in 16 of the final 20 weeks of the season. At 18 weeks, this represents the highest number of No. 1 finishes during a course of a season in 7 years – since the 2014-2015 season.

“GMA” (3.253 million, 771,000 and 523,000, respectively) beat “CBS Mornings” (2.456 million, 526,000 and 364,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+797,000), Adults 25-54 (+245,000) and Adults 18-49 (+159,000) during the season.

Week of Sept. 12, 2022:
“Good Morning America” ranked as America’s No. 1 morning newscast in Total Viewers (2.991 million) for the week of Sept. 12, 2022, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “GMA” outdelivered “Today” (2.801 million) by 190,000.

“GMA” ran neck-and-neck with “Today” for the week in Adults 25-54 as only 1,000 news demo viewers separated the two programs (718,000 vs. 719,000).

“GMA” was up over the previous week in Adults 25-54 (+1% – 718,000 vs. 710,000), standing as the only morning newscast to grow in the key Adult news demo.

“GMA” cut its margins with “Today” week to week in Adults 25-54 (-98% – 1,000 vs. 42,000) and Adults 18-49 (-17% – 25,000 vs. 30,000).

“GMA” slashed its year-to-year margins with “Today” in Adults 25-54 (-97% – 1,000 vs. 34,000) and Adults 18-49 (-59% – 25,000 vs. 61,000).

During the week, “GMA” (2.991 million, 718,000 and 485,000, respectively) defeated “CBS Mornings” (2.406 million, 519,000 and 336,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+585,000), Adults 25-54 (+199,000) and Adults 18-49 (+149,000).

NOTE: On Wednesday (9/14/22), “Good Morning America” was retitled to “GMA-ABC,” “CBS Mornings” was retitled to “CBS Morn,” and “Today” was retitled to “Today-TS” due to live coverage of a special report on Queen Elizabeth. The retitled telecasts are excluded from the week and season averages. The weekly averages for all three programs are based on four days (Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Friday).

3rd Quarter 2022:
ABC News’ “Good Morning America” won the 3rd Quarter 2022 in Total Viewers (3.001 million), Adults 25-54 (675,000) and Adults 18-49 (675,000), based on Most Current Data from Nielsen Media Research. “GMA” scored an across-the-board victory during a quarter for the first time in nearly 10 years and the first time in 28 years during a 3rd quarter — since 4Q12 and 3Q94.

In Total Viewers, “GMA” won the 3rd quarter for the 5th consecutive year and for the 10th time in the last 11 years — since 3Q12, only finishing behind “Today” during its 2016 Summer Olympics-fueled 3Q16. Overall, “GMA” has won 39 of the last 41 quarters, including the last 18.

“GMA” increased its Total Viewer advantage over “Today” versus the year-ago quarter (+1150% – 300,000 vs. 24,000 for 3Q21) to post its largest 3rd quarter lead in 7 years — since 3Q15.

“GMA” (3.001 million, 675,000 and 463,000, respectively) outperformed “CBS Mornings” (2.316 million, 486,000 and 309,000, respectively) during 3Q22 by 685,000 Total Viewers, by 189,000 Adults 25-54 and by 154,000 Adults 18-49.
