HBO Announces The Iron Anniversary, A Month-Long Celebration To Commemorate The 10th Anniversary Of “Game Of Thrones”

Ten Year Anniversary For The Groundbreaking Series Kicks Off With A Curated Spotlight Page On HBO Max, A Cause-Driven 73-Hour ‘MaraThrone,’ Special-Edition Products And More

The HBO series “Game of Thrones” was one of the largest events in television history, culminating in 45 million viewers in the U.S., distribution in 207 territories around the world, and a massive global army of fans who continue to go to great lengths to celebrate the show.

This April, to mark the 10th anniversary of the hit series’ premiere, HBO has launched The Iron Anniversary, a month-long celebration to commemorate the series, engage passionate fans, and ignite audiences’ excitement for the next iteration of the franchise, with “House of the Dragon” slated to begin production this year. A custom spotlight page on HBO Max with personalized curations, a binge-watching marathon, special-edition products, and more, will launch throughout the month.

Starting today, HBO Max features a “Game of Thrones” Spotlight Page, an in app experience with curations for every level of fandom, from a broad introduction to the world and characters for newbies, to spoiler-laden curations featuring easter eggs for die hard fans. The page includes a treasure trove of content, with over 150 videos of behind-the-scenes extras, cast interviews, clips and trailers—many of which have never been available on the streaming platform before.

Beginning April 10, HBO will launch the “Game of Thrones” MaraThrone with all episodes of season one airing on HBO2 starting at 10:00 a.m. ET, challenging fans to continue to binge watch all 73 episodes of the series on HBO Max while raising money for select global charities. For two weeks, “Game of Thrones” cast members will rally the fandom to contribute to one of ten noble causes: Women for Women International, World Central Kitchen, Conservation International, International Rescue Committee (IRC), UNICEF, FilmAid International, SameYou, Royal Mencap Society, National Urban League and The Trevor Project. A selection of superfans and influencers will receive a custom MaraThrone kit with fun essentials to aid in their marathon viewing experiences, while six unique marathon “routes” will offer a little direction to fans who want to experience the series in a whole new way. Viewers may choose from episode collections focused on the entire series, follow the Mother of Dragons through her most fiery moments, journey with Arya to Braavos and beyond, binge the best battles, watch the Army of the Dead come to life, or relive the series’ biggest spoiler episodes all over again.

Later in the month, HBO will surprise three couples who were married in Westeros-themed ceremonies with special anniversary gifts of their own: “Thrones”-branded barrels of wine, custom chalices, and elaborate cakes designed in partnership with local bakeries to represent the “Game of Thrones” houses of Targaryen, Stark and Lannister.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products and its licensing partners have teamed up to create a variety of special-edition products kicking off the Iron Anniversary that include:

A one-of-a-kind Imperial egg by Fabergé, the world’s most iconic artist jeweler, inspired by Daenerys Targaryen, and co-designed by series Emmy Award-winning costume designer Michele Clapton. The egg includes a miniature crown designed by Ms. Clapton, which represents the crown Daenerys would have worn had she taken the Iron Throne.

Mikkeller, the Danish craft beer company, have launched a range of beers inspired by the series, that will let fans all over the world celebrate one stein at a time. Fans can cheer with the first beer in the assortment called “Iron Anniversary IPA.”

Pop culture products leader Funko have unveiled a new iron-textured limited-edition assortment of fan-favorite “Game of Thrones” Pop! vinyl collectibles and new figures based on Arya Stark, Khal Drogo, and many more. Available for pre-order now at retailers everywhere.

Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Rhys Ifans, and Sonoya Mizuno Join the Cast of HBO’s “House of the Dragon”
The prequel to “Game of Thrones” will tell the story of House Targaryen.
[via press release from HBO]
COMING SOON

House of the Dragon

1 SEASON | TV-MA

The story of House Targaryen will be told. House of the Dragon, the prequel to Game of Thrones, is coming to HBO and HBO Max. Here’s everything to know so far.

What’s it about?

Based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, the series will tell the story of House Targaryen (a.k.a. the House that gave us the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen) and take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

Who’s behind the scenes?

Martin and Ryan Condal (Colony, Hercules) will serve as co-creators on the series.

Miguel Sapochnik and Condal will be showrunners, and the pair will also serve as executive producers along with Martin, Vince Gerardis, Sara Lee Hess and Ron Schmidt.

Sapochnik, whose directing credits include six Game of Thrones episodes, won Emmy and DGA honors for “Battle of the Bastards.” He was nominated for another Emmy in 2019 for directing “The Long Night” and won the Emmy for Best Drama Series as an executive producer for the final season.

Clare Kilner (The Alienist: Angel of Darkness, The Wedding Date) and Geeta V. Patel (Meet the Patels, The Witcher) will also direct the series. Greg Yaitanes (Banshee, House) is director and co-executive producer.

Game of Thrones and Westworld composer Ramin Djawadi will score the series.

Who’s in the cast?

Paddy Considine (HBO’s The Third Day and The Outsider), Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One), Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers), Matt Smith (The Crown, Doctor Who), Steve Toussaint (It’s a Sin, Doctor Who), Eve Best (Nurse Jackie, The King’s Speech), Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, The Amazing Spider-Man) and Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina, Crazy Rich Asians) have signed on for the series.

Who will they play?

Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen. Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy, but as we’ve learned from Game of Thrones, good men do not necessarily make for great kings.

Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower. She’s the daughter of Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, and the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms. She was raised in the Red Keep, close to the king and his innermost circle; she possesses both a courtly grace and a keen political acumen.

Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. The king’s first-born child. She is of pure Valyrian blood, and she is a dragonrider. Many would say that Rhaenyra was born with everything… but she was not born a man.

Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen. The younger brother of King Viserys and heir to the throne, Daemon is a peerless warrior and a dragonrider who possesses the true blood of the dragon. But it is said that whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin in the air…

Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon aka “The Sea Snake.” The lord of House Velaryon, a Valyrian bloodline as old as House Targaryen, “The Sea Snake,” is the most famed nautical adventurer in the history of Westeros. He built his house into a powerful seat that is even richer than the Lannisters and that claims the largest navy in the world.

Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Velaryon. A dragonrider and wife to Lord Corlys Velaryon, “The Queen Who Never Was” was passed over as heir to the throne at the Great Council because the realm favored her cousin, Viserys, simply for being male.

Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, who loyally and faithfully serves both his king and his realm. As the Hand sees it, the greatest threat to the realm is the king’s brother, Daemon, and his position as heir to the throne.

Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria. She came to Westeros with nothing, sold more times than she can recall, and could have wilted…but instead she rose to become the most trusted – and most unlikely – ally of Prince Daemon Targaryen, the heir to the throne.

Check back for more official updates about House of the Dragon.
