About “Sextortion: The Hidden Pandemic”
:
Sextortion: The Hidden Pandemic is an investigation into the world of online grooming and sextortion–a present-day reality for one in seven children online. Where human trafficking has hundreds of thousands of victims, sextortion victims are in the tens of millions each year. By unsealing the federal case of a top-gun pilot with hundreds of victims, and interviewing survivors and their parents, this true-crime piece exposes an often-overlooked crime against children, the tactics of online predators, and the voices of parents and law enforcement poised to stop online child exploitation in its tracks.

Through partnerships with the Department of Justice and Homeland Security, the filmmaking team had unique unrestricted access to all government documents for an international sextortion case of a Top Gun pilot with hundreds of victims, unsealed for this film for the very first time. By interviewing survivors and their parents, this true crime piece exposes this fastest growing crime against children, the tactics of online predators, and the voices of parents and law enforcement poised to stop online child exploitation in its tracks. Through interviews with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), Sextortion: The Hidden Pandemic  shows the scale of online enticement and exploitation of children– and what we can do to stop it.  The filmmakers created an online educational curriculum in partnership with  NCMEC, which is available at https://www.missingkids.org/netsmartz.  Curriculum is available free of charge to educators, parents, federal agents and police departments, and is age-appropriate for middle and high school students.

From 1955 to 1975, the United States Army Chemical Corps conducted classified human subject research on thousands of soldiers at the Edgewood Arsenal facility in Maryland. The purpose was to evaluate the impact of potent, mind-altering chemical warfare agents on military personnel as an alternative to traditional mortal combat. Today, many of those soldiers believe that the military broke the law and engaged in a decades-long cover-up to hide the truth about what really happened to them at Edgewood Arsenal. Through shocking, never-before-seen footage of the drug experiments, along with exclusive, first-hand accounts from both the mastermind behind the research and the soldiers who participated in it, Dr. Delirium & The Edgewood Experiments will uncover the true story of one of the most bizarre and controversial chapters in recent American history.

DR. DELIRIUM & THE EDGEWOOD EXPERIMENTS is part of UNDISCOVERED – UNDISCOVERED is a new strand of documentaries from Discovery, which explore some of the world’s greatest untold stories and have the potential to rewrite the history books along the way. New York, N.Y. – The 35th anniversary season of POV, America’s longest running documentary series, opens with the heart rendering observational film Wuhan Wuhan, about the first wave of COVID-19, in the city where the mysterious virus was first discovered.

Directed by Yung Chang (Up the Yangtze, This is Not a Movie), and produced by Diane Quon (Minding the Gap), Donna Gigliotti (Hidden Figures, Shakespeare in Love), and Peter Luo (Crazy Rich Asians, Marshall), the documentary goes beyond the statistics and salacious headlines to provide a human experience to the early months of the pandemic through the stories of frontline medical workers, patients, and ordinary citizens.

Wuhan Wuhan makes its national broadcast and streaming premiere on PBS television series POV, Monday, July 11, 2022 at 10pmET/9C and is available to stream free through August 11, 2022 at pbs.org, and the PBS Video app. In addition to standard closed captioning, POV, in partnership with audio description service DiCapta, provides real time audio interpretations for audiences with sensory disabilities.

“We’re so pleased to have Wuhan Wuhan open our milestone 35th season,” said American Documentary | POV Executive Director Erika Dilday. She added, “This film is exceptional in terms of its unprecedented access and storytelling as well in support of our mission to uplift BIPOC creators and stories, particularly in the current wave of violence against the AAPI and Asian American communities.”

During February and March 2020, two months into the city’s lockdown, hospital medical staff in Wuhan are scrambling for PPE, some using their own money to buy the necessary protective gear. Doctors and nurses write their names and pin pictures of themselves to their chests so their patients can recognize them. As the deadly coronavirus evolves, city residents and volunteers from other provinces provide necessary resources as Wuhan grapples with an invisible, deadly killer. Amidst the height of the pandemic, Chang and his crew have unprecedented access into firsthand accounts of local medical personnel and selfless volunteers—each with a unique perspective, to the crisis at hand.

Wuhan Wuhan focuses on five compelling stories: Dr. Xiannian Zheng, 35, a soft-hearted ER doctor and Susu, 34, an unflappable ICU nurse from the COVID-19 hospital; Dr. Guiqing Zhang, 55, a compassionate volunteer psychologist at a temporary hospital; Xiuli Liu, 41, a tenacious mother and her son Lai Lai, 9, who are COVID-19 patients navigating the PRC healthcare system; and Yin, 30, a volunteer driver for medical workers and his 9 month pregnant wife Xu, 23, whose heartfelt story forms the backbone of this film.

Director Yung Chang remarked: “It’s a great honor to have Wuhan Wuhanopen the 35th season of POV. I hope this film helps to set the tone for a season of remarkable films that epitomize compassion and empathy as we forge ahead with our endemic livelihoods. My first feature documentary, Up the Yangtze, was broadcast on POV just before the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics, a time when there was much curiosity about a country in flux. At that time, I hoped to present a nuanced look into modernizing China. So it feels humbling to be able to return with a new film that seeks to present a point-of-view about China that tries to go beyond the monolith trope and offer a reflection of everyday individuals who experience the pandemic with pathos and humor, anger and pragmatism, fear and joy, much like we have in North America.”

Chris White, POV’s Executive Producer said, “There are so many things that divide us and make us different from each other – from generation, to religion, gender, race and geography — that it’s easy to lose sight of what unites us, our common humanity. Wuhan Wuhan reminds us that we all want to be safe, and loved, and that the most frightening challenges are best handled together.”

Wuhan Wuhan is a co-production of Stars Collective Films Entertainment Group Inc., SA Inc.,Starlight Media Inc. and American Documentary, in association with Kartemquin Films. Directed and written by Yung Chang and produced by Academy Award®-winner Donna Gigliotti (Hidden Figures, Shakespeare in Love), Peter Luo (Crazy Rich Asians, Marshall) and Academy Award®-nominee Diane Quon (Minding the Gap, co-produced by American Documentary). The executive producers are Erika Dilday and Chris White for POV and Donnie Yen, Cheng Yang and Yuki Zhang. The editors are Evita Yuepu Zhou and Zimo Huang. Music is by Hualan.

National Geographic Announces Line-Up of Four Projects from Free Solo’s Award-Winning Documentary Duo

National Geographic Announces Line-Up of Four Projects from Free Solo’s Award-Winning Documentary Duo, E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin
The Robust Unscripted Slate Produced by Little Monster Films Includes Two Documentary Features, a 10-Part Series and One-Hour Pilot
Feature Docs Include Exclusive Access and Never-Before-Seen Footage From the Dramatic 2018 Rescue of a Thai Soccer Team

Following the success of E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s Academy®, BAFTA and multiple Emmy® award-winning film, FREE SOLO, National Geographic revealed today a diverse lineup of four unscripted projects from the acclaimed storytelling duo as a result of their first-look deal announced in 2019. The dynamic unscripted slate directed by the pair and produced by their production company, Little Monster Films, includes two feature documentaries, a 10-part series and a one-hour pilot.

From inside a flooding cave in northern Thailand and the majestic landscapes of Patagonia to a sailing expedition in the Bahamas and a perilous journey across the Arctic tundra, the four titles will chronicle riveting true stories and awe-inspiring narratives while taking audiences on a visually spectacular adventure across the globe. The acclaimed filmmaking team will turn an intensely personal lens on world-renowned adventurers, including conservationist Kristine Tompkins and National Geographic’s 2018 Adventurers of the Year, Paul Nicklen and Cristina Mittermeier.

Featured in this ambitious lineup is the feature doc THAI CAVE RESCUE (wt). Vasarhelyi and Chin will bring their signature filmmaking and nuanced character portraits to the against-all-odds story of the dramatic 2018 rescue of a boys’ soccer team trapped deep inside a flooded cave in Thailand. With exclusive access and never-before-seen footage from the rescue, the film tells the story of the cave divers who challenged the limits of human potential and became the unlikely heroes of an edge-of-your-seat mission with life-or-death stakes.

“National Geographic shares our deep commitment to bringing honest and inspiring stories to audiences around the world,” said directors Vasarhelyi and Chin. “We are thrilled to be working with them again on these powerful new projects that not only push the boundaries of filmmaking but also shine a light on the incredible resilience and determination of humankind.”

“Chai and Jimmy are masterful storytellers who bring unparalleled artistry and distinctive vision to everything they do,” said Carolyn Bernstein, executive vice president of Scripted Content and Documentary Films for National Geographic. “We are proud to continue our partnership with them to tell these profound stories in an authentic yet innovative way.”

THAI CAVE RESCUE

Feature Documentary (produced by John Battsek for Passion Pictures and Ventureland and Storyteller Productions’ P.J. van Sandwijk; directed and produced by E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin)

On a cool June afternoon in the hilly region of northern Thailand, the Wild Boars youth soccer team was finishing practice early so that they could attend a teammate’s birthday party. Before heading to the party, the 12 boys and their assistant coach decided to explore a nearby system of caves—an outing that transformed into a two-week saga of survival and a story that would capture the attention of the world. THAI CAVE RESCUE will chronicle the dramatic 2018 rescue of the team trapped deep inside a flooding cave, the perilous world of cave diving, the bravery of the rescuers and the dedication of an entire community that made great sacrifices to save these young boys. A full 360° view of the crisis, told through unexpected angles and with untold stories, the film will bring to light the imagination and determination displayed during the heroic endeavor. Unlike most diving experiences in which one relies on a team, these rescue divers were in the water on their own, completely dependent on their gear and knowing that if it failed, that would be the end. There would be no turning back; life or death was literally a breath of air away.

TOMPKINS

Feature Documentary (produced and directed by E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin; produced by Anna Barnes and Bob Eisenhardt)

One day in 1991, Doug Tompkins walked into a restaurant in El Calafate, Argentina, and changed the life of Kristine McDivitt forever. Kristine and Doug had met before, but this time their meeting instantly sparked an intense connection, leading to a lifelong romance and partnership. She became Kristine Tompkins, and together they moved to a remote area of southern Chile on a mission to save the world. The feature documentary is an intimate portrait of conservationist and former CEO of Patagonia, Inc., Kristine Tompkins, and the organization that she and Doug founded together, Tompkins Conservation. Exploring Kristine and Doug’s inspiring love story, as well as the national parks throughout Chile and Argentina that they helped create together, the film illustrates their incredible journey. It compels audiences to care about conservation and consider: What are you willing to live for?
