From 20th Television, Imagine Television and Undisputed Cinema, Production to Begin October 2022 in Atlanta
(BURBANK, CALIF. – September 28, 2022) Disney+ and National Geographic announced today the following casting of the Original Series “Genius: MLK/X,” produced by 20th Television, Imagine Television and Undisputed Cinema: Kelvin Harrison Jr. (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”) as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Aaron Pierre (“The Underground Railroad”) as Malcolm X, Weruche Opia (“I May Destroy You”) as Coretta Scott King, and Jayme Lawson (“The Batman”) as Betty Shabazz. Principal photography will begin in October 2022 in Atlanta.
“We are beyond excited to have put together the incredible foursome of Kelvin, Aaron, Jayme and Weruche to bring the depth, complexity, and humanity to these indelible icons,” said the Bythewoods. “They are all next level in their chops and their passion to tell this story.”
As previously announced, in a first for the franchise, the new season of the Emmy(R) Award-winning anthology series will focus on two iconic geniuses: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. “Genius: MLK/X” will explore the formative years, pioneering accomplishments, dueling philosophies and key personal relationships of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (Harrison Jr.) and Malcolm X (Pierre). While King advanced racial equality through nonviolent protest, Malcolm X argued forcefully for Black empowerment, identity and self-determination. With their formidable wives, Coretta Scott King (Opia) and Betty Shabazz (Lawson), by their sides, King and Malcolm X became synonymous with the civil rights era and the fight for racial and economic justice. While they met only once and often challenged each other’s views, neither would have been as successful without the other.
In addition to today’s casting news, executive producers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood announced a think tank of renowned historians and experts serving as production consultants prior to the start of the writer’s room to guide the production, including the following (in alphabetical order):
· Jamal Joseph (“Panther Baby: A Life of Rebellion and Reinvention”), formerly a member of the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army, is a writer, director and professor of professional practice at Columbia University School of the Arts in the film department.
· Peniel E. Joseph is a writer whose book, “The Sword and The Shield: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr.,” serves as inspiration for the series and also serves as a series consultant.
· Michele Norris is a columnist and consultant for Post Opinions and founding director of Peabody Award-winning The Race Card Project.
· Dr. Kameelah Rashad is the founder and president of the Muslim Wellness Foundation (MWF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting healing and emotional well-being in the American Muslim community.
· Dr. Barbara Reynolds is an award-winning journalist, author and minister who penned several books, including “Jesse Jackson, America’s David” and “No, I Won’t Shut Up: 30 Years of Telling It Like It Is,” with a foreword by Coretta Scott King.
· Ambassador Shabazz, producer, writer, diplomat and eldest daughter of Dr. Betty Shabazz and Malcolm X Shabazz, also serves as consulting producer for the series.
· Jeff Stetson, whose play “The Meeting” serves as inspiration for the series, is an internationally acclaimed award-winning playwright and screenwriter for film and television. He also serves as an executive producer on the series.
· Jeanne Theoharis, a political science professor at City University of New York, is the author or co-author of eleven books and numerous articles on the civil rights and Black Power movements.
· Pastor Michael A. Walrond, Jr., senior pastor of First Corinthian Baptist Church, received numerous honors, accolades and recognitions, including induction into Morehouse College’s Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers.
“We wanted to assemble a consortium of scholars and experts who can not only lend their extensive knowledge, expertise and research but also create a space for meaningful debate and discussion to ensure an honest portrayal of the complexities of these iconic geniuses. The legacies of Martin and Malcolm are critical to our understanding of the social justice movements of today, so we had to get this right. We could not have asked for a more incredible group to guide us through their stories,” added the Bythewoods.
Additionally, Channing Godfrey Peoples was named as co-executive producer and will direct the pilot episode for “Genius: MLK/X.” Godfrey Peoples made her feature directorial debut with “Miss Juneteenth,” for which she received the coveted National Board of Review Award for Best Directorial Debut and was also recognized with multiple nominations from the Gotham Awards and the Film Independent Spirit Awards, among others. Trick or Stream: The Disney Bundle is the Ultimate Home of Halloween with Huluween and Disney+ Hallowstream Delivering Shrieks, Scares, and Sass
Highly anticipated premieres arrive on Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ including Hocus Pocus 2, Hellraiser, Huluween Dragstravaganza, A Sinister Halloween Scary Opposites Solar Special, Marvel Studios’ Werewolf by Night, Peyton & Eli’s Spooky Adventure, and more
There are some holidays that have become synonymous with major live events – a parade, or perhaps a ball drop – but Halloween belongs to the streamers. This year, Hulu’s iconic “Huluween,” now in its fifth year, and Disney+’s “Hallowstream” celebration make the Disney Bundle the ultimate destination for every kind of Halloween viewer, whether you’re looking for scares, sass, or even sports.
Huluween
Hulu will kick off its iconic Huluween celebration with the premiere of Huluween Dragstravaganza, a hilarious drag variety show hosted by fan-favorites Ginger Minj and Monét X Change. These two superstars are trapped in the TV, and the only way out is to host a hilarious Huluween TV special with a troupe of iconic queens (and a major special musical guest) who take the stage in original musical numbers, sketch comedy, and more! The one-hour show will stream exclusively on Hulu beginning October 1, and the hair (and heel!)-raising scream-worthy teaser premieres today.
The Huluween hub will continue to serve as the go-to streaming destination for every type of Halloween content including recent buzzworthy film releases Prey, No Exit, Hatched and Abandoned (10/21), highly-anticipated premieres like A Sinister Halloween Scary Opposites Solar Special (10/3), Hellraiser (10/7), The Paloni Show! Halloween Special! (10/17), Antlers (10/11), and legendary favorites like The Rocky Horror Picture Show (10/1), The Sixth Sense (10/1), Monster House (10/1), and the Blade trilogy (10/1). Chilling, can’t-miss TV series include American Horror Stories, The X-Files, Stephen King’s Storm of the Century, SurrealEstate (10/6), the hilarious What We Do in the Shadows and many more. This year also marks the anniversaries of unforgettable classics including Predator (35th Anniversary), The Hand that Rocks the Cradle (30th Anniversary, streaming 10/1), Hotel Transylvania (10th Anniversary), and Buffy the Vampire Slayer series (25th Anniversary).
The Huluween celebrations won’t stop at the screen. This year, Huluween enthusiasts can revel on both coasts, with Hulu taking part in Salem, Massachusetts’ annual Haunted Happenings celebration on October 31, and LA’s terrifying Haunted Hayride from October 19-31 (ex. 10/24). More details about these fan opportunities, if you dare, will be revealed in the coming weeks.
Also premiering on October 1 is the third season of Bite Size Halloween featuring 21 brand new shorts that explore different areas of the horror genre and provide a platform for exciting up-and-coming filmmakers. Viewers should be on the lookout for some familiar faces including Tatiana Maslany, Misha Osherovich, Brigette Lundy-Paine, David Costabile, and more. As previously announced, several of the Bite Size shorts have been developed into feature films, and this year Hulu will release Grimcutty on October 10, and Matriarch on October 21. The Grimcutty and Matriarch official trailers make their frightening debuts today!
Hallowstream on Disney+
This fall, Disney+ will host its third annual “Hallowstream” celebration. With Halloween traditions like Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Collection, eerie episodes from WandaVision, Glee, and Even Stevens, and further frights like Halloweentown, Muppets Haunted Mansion, and Zombies 3, the Halloween Collection on Disney+ offers tricks and treats for all ages.
Hallowstream 2022 brings brand-boo releases including the return of the iconic Sanderson sisters in Hocus Pocus 2 (9/30), and Marvel Studios’ first-ever special presentation Werewolf by Night (10/7). Families can also pick up their mics to new Sing-Along releases of fan favorite films including The Nightmare Before Christmas Sing-Along (9/30) and Into the Woods Sing-Along (10/4).
Hallowstream fans in Los Angeles can check out some of the collection’s most wicked offerings on the big screen at one of LA’s oldest cemeteries – the legendary Hollywood Forever Cemetery – with fan-favorite screenings on Friday, October 7 and Saturday, October 8. Bites and treats will be available for purchase from Smorgasburg. Additional details to come.
ESPN+
Sports fans will enjoy a ghost-busting Halloween too, when Peyton and Eli’s Spooky Adventure: A Places Universe Special debuts on ESPN+ on October 23. Join brothers Peyton and Eli Manning in the Places Universe as they look for the ghost of Notre Dame’s most legendary football player.
For other chilling stories centered around sports, the ESPN+ True Crime collection includes titles like The Life & Trials of Oscar Pistorius, OJ: Made in America, The Two Escobars, and more.

As their home’s history is revealed, the mother’s postpartum depression escalates to a state of psychosis that jeopardizes her own safety and that of her newborn son.
Matriarch (Hulu Original Film, October 21) – After an overdose nearly takes her life, Laura Birch (Jemima Rooper, The Girlfriend Experience, Flowers in the Attic: The Origin) escapes from the high-stakes pressure of the advertising world to return to her roots. Accepting an invitation home from her estranged mother (Kate Dickie, Game of Thrones, The Green Knight), Laura hopes the time away in the secluded English village will help calm the demons raging inside of her. She soon discovers that the locals of the town are all protecting an unspeakably dark secret—a secret that involves not only her mother but her own terrifying destiny as well. DISNEY+ DEBUTS TRAILER FOR DISNEY ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY’S “MICKEY: THE STORY OF A MOUSE”
Award-Winning Director Jeff Malmberg Reteams With Academy Award(R)-Winning Producer Morgan Neville for the Film, Which Will Premiere On Mickey’s Birthday, Nov. 18th
Features All-New Walt Disney Animation Studios hand-drawn short, “Mickey In A Minute”
(BURBANK, CA – Sept. 11, 2022) Today, Disney+ released the teaser trailer and key art for MICKEY: THE STORY OF A MOUSE from Disney Original Documentary. The announcement comes out of D23 Expo in Anaheim, which launched the official kick-off to the 100th anniversary celebration of The Walt Disney Company. The feature documentary will premiere globally on Disney+ on November 18 – Mickey Mouse’s birthday. MICKEY: THE STORY OF A MOUSE is directed by award-winning filmmaker Jeff Malmberg (Marwencol) and produced by Academy Award(R)-winner Morgan Neville (Won’t You Be My Neighbor), Meghan Walsh, and Chris Shellen. The documentary was executive produced by Caitrin Rogers, edited by Jake Hostetter, Aaron Wickenden, cinematography by Antonio Cisneros, sound design by Lawrence Everson, and music by Daniel Wohl. The film had its World Premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival earlier this year and also screened at this year’s Sun Valley Film Festival and Newport Summer Film Series, among several others.
As one of the world’s most beloved characters, Mickey Mouse is recognized as a symbol of joy and childhood innocence in virtually every corner of the globe. Dreamed up at a low point in Walt Disney’s burgeoning career, Mickey became an overnight sensation when he starred in the first sync-sound animated short, “Steamboat Willie.” Through the decades that followed, the character evolved into strikingly different versions of himself that reflect both his creator’s remarkable career and dramatic societal shifts in the nation he came to represent. Director Jeff Malmberg and Academy Award-winning producer Morgan Neville (who previously teamed up for “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”) examine the cultural significance of the nearly 100-year-old cartoon mouse. The documentary also features an exclusive animated short film, “Mickey in a Minute,” created by the legendary hand-drawn team from Walt Disney Animation Studios.
“Ninety-four years ago, Walt Disney created a mouse that would become one of the world’s most beloved characters,” said Marjon Javadi, vice president of Disney Original Documentary. “We are excited for the world to see Mickey Mouse in a way they’ve never seen him before. Our award-winning team of filmmakers captures Mickey’s journey through the years and reminds us why he has had such an impact on us.”
MICKEY: THE STORY OF A MOUSE features legendary Disney animators Eric Goldberg, Mark Henn and Randy Haycock, as well as animation artist and Disney Legend Floyd Norman. Art historian Carmenita Higginbotham, director of Walt Disney Archives Rebecca Cline and archivist Kevin Kern are also featured in the film. With exclusive archival footage and interviews, the film examines the ongoing artistic and cultural significance – as well as the controversies – surrounding the nearly 100-year-old cartoon mouse. The film features a brand new Walt Disney Animation Studios hand-drawn animated short, “Mickey in a Minute,” and documents its animation process by Eric Goldberg, Mark Henn and Randy Haycock.
“Mickey Mouse is a symbol we see every day of our lives” director Jeff Malmberg says. “We all know Mickey, but he means different things to different people. We felt like Mickey deserved a documentary that was joyful but also honest. I’m glad that Disney allowed us to delve so deeply into the evolutions and meanings of the world’s most famous mouse.”
Jeff Malmberg is a documentary filmmaker whose debut film, “Marwencol,” won more than two dozen awards, including the SXSW Grand Jury Award. It was recently selected for the Criterion Channel and named a Cinema Eye Decade Film as one of the 20 best documentary films in the last 10 years. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship for his second film, “Spettacolo,” a Critics’ Choice nominee for Best Documentary. Malmberg edited Morgan Neville’s documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?,” which was released by Focus Features. Most recently, he was nominated for a GRAMMY(R) for co-directing and editing “Shangri-La,” a four-part series for Showtime about Rick Rubin and the creative process.
Jeff Malmberg is directing MICKEY: THE STORY OF A MOUSE with Academy Award-winner Morgan Neville producing under his company, Tremolo Productions. Chris Shellen and Meghan Walsh are also producers. Caitrin Rogers serves as executive producer. Marjon Javadi is vice president of Originals for Documentaries and Docuseries for Disney Branded Television/Disney Original Documentary.
Disney Original Documentary previously announced upcoming projects “Goodbye Yellowbrick Road: The Final Elton John Performances and The Years That Made His Legend,” “Madu,” “If These Walls Could Sing,” the untitled film on Jim Henson, and the Oscar(R) short-listed documentary short “Sophie and the Baron.” Critically acclaimed “Mija” will premiere on Disney+ on Sept. 16, 2022.
