Emmy(R) and Peabody Award-Winning Director Heather O’Neill Focuses A Lens On The Trailblazing Female Photojournalists Who Brought the World to our Screens

From Tiananmen Square to the Arab Spring, Sarajevo to South Africa, and beyond, CNN has delivered the world’s seminal events to screens around the globe. In this feature documentary for CNN Films, NO ORDINARY LIFE celebrates the trailblazing and courageous female photojournalists who captured much of that history. NO ORDINARY LIFE is directed by journalist, documentary filmmaker, and CNN alum, Heather O’Neill. NO ORDINARY LIFE premieres on CNN at 10:00pm Eastern on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5.

“I wanted to make a film that allowed the audience to be immersed in the experience of being behind the camera through the photographer’s point of view. The sounds, the signs, the split-second decisions, and the sense of what unfolds for the camerawomen,” said Heather O’Neill, director, NO ORDINARY LIFE.

In a field dominated by men, Jane Evans, Maria Fleet, Margaret Moth, Mary Rogers, and Cynde Strand broke news, bucked stereotypes, and built an enduring sisterhood. Tough, talented, resilient, and resourceful, these fierce five recount the risks of reporting under fire with white-knuckle, behind-the-scenes footage, often braving dangerous circumstances to get the story. O’Neill’s profiles of these pioneering women behind the cameras that captures their pursuits of searing images of war, famine, revolutions, and natural disasters around the world, as they particularly focus in on the people at risk. Incorporating some of their closest calls in the field for the documentary, O’Neill reveals the astonishing images of their careers.

Christiane Amanpour, CNN’s chief international anchor, praises their skillful camerawork, bravery, and camaraderie in the field. And, their work behind the camera was essential to her own legendary work in front of the camera.

“We were brave and came back with the goods. What united us was our passion for each story.” ~ Cynde Strand

While the images they took both informed and shocked the world, O’Neill’s narrative also reveals their work came with personal costs. In a particularly harrowing sequence, Amanpour, and former CNN producer Stefano Kotsonis, describe the horrific shooting of camerawoman Margaret Moth, by a sniper in Sarajevo. From war zone-to-war zone and disaster-to-disaster, they escaped threats to their personal safety in the line of duty, and bore the heavy responsibility that comes with telling people’s stories.

Profiled for NO ORDINARY LIFE:

Jane Evans has covered world events in more than 100 countries. As a multiple Emmy(R) Award-winning photojournalist and producer, she has recorded scenes from the civil war in Lebanon, the Iran-Iraq War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Gulf Wars, Rwanda, war in the former Yugoslavia, Somalia, and famine in Africa.

Maria Fleet began her Emmy(R) Award-winning career in 1981 at the then-fledgling CNN. Traveling to assignments from the network’s bureau in Rome for more than 10 years, she became an expert in conflict photojournalism, covering the fall of the Berlin Wall, the first Gulf War, the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia, the U.S. intervention in Somalia, and the wars in Chechnya and Kosovo, before covering the U.S. invasion of Iraq following the Sept. 11 attacks. Margaret Moth began her career as a trailblazer and was the first female photojournalist in her native New Zealand. Later, for CNN, Moth covered civil war in the nations of Georgia and the former Yugoslavia, as well as the violence in India that followed the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Mary Rogers has covered history up close for the past 40 years as a multiple Emmy(R) Award-winning and Peabody Award-winning photojournalist with CNN International. From the first and second Gulf Wars, to the fall of the former Soviet Union, to wars in Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Kosovo, Syria, the election of Nelson Mandela in South Africa, the rise and fall of the Islamic State, Rogers was there. Based in Tokyo for seven years, Rogers moved to Cairo, where she lives today.

Cynde Strand is an award-winning journalist with 40 years of experience in international news gathering, frontline coverage, and documentary reporting. For more than 20 years, Strand has traveled the world as a CNN cameraperson/producer assigned to bureaus in Beirut, Beijing, Nicosia, London, and Johannesburg. Strand covered the Tiananmen Square protests and crackdown, the first Gulf War, the first free and democratic election in South Africa, and the aftermath of genocide in Rwanda and famine in Somalia. She also directed breaking news coverage from CNN’s headquarters in Atlanta.

“I do seem like I was born to be a news cameraman… ” ~ Margaret Moth, on her legendary career

NO ORDINARY LIFE screened for its world premiere at the 2021 Tribeca Festival. Later, the film screened at Hamptons Doc Fest.

NO ORDINARY LIFE was produced by Array / Films, with producer Rich Brooks, who was also director of photography; it was edited by Neal Broffman. Patrick Kirst composed the original score for the film.

The Epic Six-Part Journey Begins Sunday, July 10 at 9pm ET/PT on CNN

CNN Original Series will transport audiences to South America in the visually stunning docuseries, Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World, premiering Sunday, July 10 at 9pm ET/PT on CNN. Narrated by Chilean-born actor Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, Game of Thrones) and produced by Plimsoll Productions, this riveting series explores the wonders of one of the last untouched places on earth, the far-off land of Patagonia in South America.

“This summer, CNN embarks on new journey into the longform nonfiction space with Patagonia as we launch our first wildlife documentary series, breaking new ground for our CNN Original Series brand” said Amy Entelis, Executive Vice President for Talent & Content Development, CNN Worldwide. “We can’t wait for CNN audiences to discover the natural wonders of Patagonia and the majesty of the wildlife of the region.”

Stretching for more than a thousand miles through Chile and Argentina, Patagonia is a place unlike any other: wild, isolated, pristine, and unexplored. The region’s iconic wildlife – pumas, penguins, condors, and killer whales – thrive in a rich diversity of habitats, and species new to science – insect, bird, and even mammal – are discovered here each year. Across six captivating episodes, Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World takes audiences across Patagonia’s diverse and spectacular landscapes, traveling along its coastline from wind-blown deserts to pristine fjordlands, from deep inside its magical, ancient forests up to the high peaks of the Andes. With state-of-the-art cameras and help from local experts granting unprecedented access, this immersive docuseries showcases the wildlife, the scientists who study it, and the people of the region who have evolved to live in these varied habitats. Filmed over one dramatic year, throughout this epic journey, CNN Original Series reveals what it takes to survive at the edge of the world. This is Patagonia like you’ve never seen it before.

“I have great memories of taking trips to Patagonia and exploring some of the beautiful places depicted in the series,” said Pedro Pascal. “I am excited to bring my voice to the project and share this special part of the world with North American audiences.”

Executive producers for Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World are James Smith and Martha Holmes for Plimsoll Productions and Amy Entelis and Lyle Gamm for CNN Original Series. The series will regularly air on Sundays at 9pm ET/PT on CNN.

The series will also be available On Demand the day after the broadcast premiere to pay TV subscribers via CNN.com, CNN apps, and Cable Operator Platforms.

Ahead of the broadcast premiere and beginning July 1, the “Forests” episode of Patagonia: Life at the Edge of the World will be available On Demand to pay TV subscribers via CNN.com, CNN apps, and Cable Operator Platforms.

Season 7 Promo: https://bit.ly/3zILPrs

NEW YORK – (June 14, 2022) – The seventh season of the five-time Emmy(R) Award-winning documentary series United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell will launch Sunday, July 10 at 10pm ET/PT, only on CNN. Across seven new episodes, CNN Original Series embarks on a cross country journey with comedian and political provocateur W. Kamau Bell as he visits communities across America to explore race, class, and the unique challenges they face. Produced by Zero Point Zero Production and featuring Bell’s signature blend of empathy and humor, United Shades of America gives voice to those whose perspectives are too often left out of the conversation.

“For the last seven years, United Shades of America has been a cornerstone of the CNN Original Series brand and Kamau’s unparalleled ability to weave his natural curiosity and sense of humor together have ignited many important – and at times vital – conversations around race and society in this country,” said Amy Entelis, Executive Vice President for Talent & Content Development, CNN Worldwide. “We are excited to join Kamau on another personal and witty odyssey across America.”

This season on United Shades of America, Bell travels to Appalachia, exploring the significant and largely unknown population of Black Americans who call the area home; to Boston, examining the mental health issues affecting the sport world; to Bell’s home state of California, an area plagued by constant wildfires, discovering how communities have learned to coexist with this frequent destruction; to Hawaii, uncovering how the island has been commodified by an exploitative tourism industry following the COVID-19 pandemic; to New York City as he discusses Asian American representation in film and media, revealing the commonality between his own experience and theirs; to the Black Hills of South Dakota, surveying the Landback Campaign organized by Indigenous peoples of the region; and to Maricopa County in Arizona as he investigates the origins of “wokeness” and how the word “woke” has become politicized and enmeshed in the ideological debate over how the history of the United States is taught in schools.

“Neither COVID, nor misinformation, nor political gridlock, nor the gloom of the feeling that American democracy is crumbling will keep me from my appointed duty of traveling the country for another season of United Shades of America,” said W. Kamau Bell, Host and Executive Producer.

Executive producers for United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell are W. Kamau Bell, Lydia Tenaglia, Chris Collins, Sandra Zweig, and Morgan Fallon for Zero Point Zero Production; Jimmy Fox, Layla Smith, and Tim Pastore for Main Event Media/All3Media; and Amy Entelis and Lyle Gamm for CNN Original Series. CNN unveiled highlights of their new and returning premium nonfiction content for 2022 and 2023 as part of the Warner Bros. Discovery upfront presentation.

Chris Licht, chairman and chief executive officer of CNN Worldwide offered a sneak peek into CNN’s 2023 programming slate, announcing three new CNN Original Series, including the highly anticipated Eva Longoria: Searching for Mexico, See it Loud (wt), and a new installment in the Primetime Emmy(R) Award nominated “Decades Series” with The 2010s. Adding to the brand’s successful portfolio of premium nonfiction content, winner of the 2021 Emmy(R) Award for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Program, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, will continue its second season with new episodes this fall. Some upcoming 2022-2023 titles for CNN Original Series include:

Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy - In the second season of this critically-acclaimed series, Academy Award(R) nominee and Emmy(R) Award-winning actor Stanley Tucci indulges his passion for Italian cooking as he explores the stories and people behind the world’s most popular cuisine.  Across four new episodes, Tucci brings us on his journey to the bustling food markets, delectable home cooking and hidden trattorias of the Italian peninsula in this deeply personal, witty, and warm odyssey of gastronomic delights.  Produced by RAW TV, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy season two continues this fall on CNN.

Eva Longoria: Searching for Mexico  –  This exciting new CNN Original Series follows Longoria as she traverses Mexico exploring one of the most popular, and arguably misunderstood, global cuisines. Mexican food can be found in every corner of the world, but its origins tell the story of culture and people deeply connected to the land and spirit of their country.  From harvesting blue agave for tequila as the Aztecs once did, to slow cooking traditional mole sauce in Oaxaca, join Longoria as she journeys across the many vibrant regions of Mexico to reveal its unique and colorful cuisines. Produced by RAW TV, the film and television company behind the Emmy(R) Award winning Searching for Italy, Eva Longoria: Searching for Mexico will debut exclusively on CNN.

See It Loud: The History of Black Television (wt)  –  See It Loud: The History of Black Television (wt) is a five-part docuseries celebrating the achievements of Black actors and creators, examining the historical impact Black culture has on all culture. Today, we are in the midst of what is widely been referred to as the “Golden Age of Black Television;” however, this “Golden Age” is the culmination of an eighty-year struggle for Black artists to find a voice and fight for representation.  The series explores the vast history of Black television through iconic performances across various genres including sitcoms, comedy, drama, unscripted, variety, and science fiction.  LeBron James and Maverick Carter will serve as executive producers with their empowerment-led media conglomerate The SpringHill Company. Showrunner Jodi Gomes will also executive produce alongside Jamal Henderson and Philip Byron with co-executive producer Courtney Whitaker.

The 2010s – From Emmy(R) Award-winning executive producers Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, and Mark Herzog comes a new installment of the highly successful “Decades” series, The 2010s. This new chapter in the beloved CNN Original Series will revisit the decade that gave us Instagram, President Barack Obama, marriage equality, Black Lives Matter, #MeToo, and Trumpism and explore the cultural movements, political uprisings, and technological advances that shaped this era to remember.

CNN Films is developing premium documentaries with an extraordinary and diverse group of talented creatives, across varied subjects that will entertain and engage all film fans.  The brand is also collaborating with Warner Bros. Discovery brands, and other partners, for premieres on CNN’s linear network.  Some of the upcoming 2022-2023 titles for CNN Films are:

Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down is directed by Julie Cohen and Betsy West, who also directed the Academy(R) Award-nominated, Emmy(R) Award-winning RBG for CNN Films.  The film explores the life and mission of the former Arizona Congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt in 2011.  The film profiles her remarkable recovery, and her marriage with Sen. Mark Kelly, as they navigate their new lives together in the wake of the assault.  Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down is produced by Storyville Films and Lisa Erspamer Entertainment for CNN Films and TIME Studios.

Little Richard: I Am Everything (wt), directed by Lisa Cortés and produced by Bungalow Media + Entertainment, in association with Rolling Stone, is commissioned by CNN Films and HBO Max.  The biographical documentary takes viewers on the wild ride of the life of Richard Penniman (aka, Little Richard), an original architect of rock and roll.  Premiering on CNN in 2023.

An untitled documentary about the rise and fall of HQ Trivia, directed by Salima Koroma (Dreamland: The Burning of Black Wall Street) and produced by Left/Right, takes viewers on the rocket-like rise and sudden implosion of the once-ubiquitous mobile game show, HQ Trivia. The global viral sensation drew millions of daily users to its frenetically fun trivia challenges and attracted celebrity fans including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Neil Patrick Harris, Jimmy Kimmel, and Kelly Clarkson. The appeal of the promising phenomenon where correctly answering a series of 12 questions won the players cash prizes, quickly gave way to corporate clashes, jealousies, questionable leadership, and even a tragic death. The gameplay was simple and the concept clear, but like so many well-financed toppled tech start-ups before it, the antics behind the screens were rife with drama, destruction, and dysfunction – this is the story of the sh*tshow. Premiering on CNN in 2023.

Produced by RAW TV, the film and television company behind the Emmy(R) Award winning Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, the six-part series will premiere in 2023 on CNN.

CNN Films to Premiere ‘Deliciously Big-Hearted’ Julia Child Doc for TV on May 30

Academy Award-nominated Filmmakers Julie Cohen and Betsy West Stir Up A Profile Of The Chef, Cultural Ambassador, and Icon, Julia Child, for JULIA

From Imagine Documentaries and Executive Producers Brian Grazer and Ron Howard

JULIA, from Academy Award-nominated filmmakers Julie Cohen and Betsy West (RBG), will premiere for television on CNN on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30 at 8:00pm and 10:00pm Eastern (5:00pm and 7:00pm Pacific), with limited commercial interruption. The documentary celebrates the life and career of chef, cookbook author, and television and cultural pioneer, Julia Child.

“Julia Child was an irresistible subject,” say filmmakers Betsy West and Julie Cohen, “and not just because of her charismatic, joie-de-vivre personality, and crying-out-for-imitation voice. As a cookbook author and television chef, Julia had a profound impact on the way Americans think about food, about television, and about the possibilities for women.”

Sizzling with mouth-watering food cinematography, diced with never-before-seen archival film and photos, and interviews with those who knew her, the documentary captures the surprising, and quietly subversive, life of Julia Child. Born to a well-to-do, conservative California family, Julia McWilliams worked in advertising after graduating from Smith College, and later in support roles for the OSS intelligence agency during World War II. The film uses excerpts from the personal diaries of Julia McWilliams and Paul Child, to reveal their courtship and early marital adventures as they followed Paul’s foreign service assignments to Germany, Norway, and France, where she trained at the famed Le Cordon Bleu cooking school.

“Julia Child was a muse to so many of us who remember her hundreds of television appearances through the decades. We hope viewers will be delighted to discover – or rediscover – a woman who defied all expectations, pursued her passions, and soared in midlife, particularly in a field considered to be a mostly male bastion,” said Amy Entelis, executive vice president for talent and content development for CNN Worldwide who alongside Courtney Sexton, senior vice president for CNN Films, is an executive producer for JULIA.

The film explores Julia Child’s nearly ten year toil of testing recipes and exchanging notes with two friends who shared her love of French food. In 1961, the co-authors published the masterpiece, Mastering the Art of French Cooking (Knopf Doubleday), which has sold more than 2.5M copies to date. It was during the promotional tour for the book in the U.S., at the age of 50, that Julia Child landed her legendary television show, The French Chef, and her extraordinary career took flight.

JULIA is heralded as a:

“this terrific documentary is about Julia’s manifold loves… Her phenomenally full life fills the film to the brim.” ~ Joe Morgenstern, WSJ

“an invigorating new documentary looks back on Julia Child and her influence on how Americans cook and eat” ~ Glenn Kenny, The New York Times

“an affectionate and flavorful tribute” ~ Jake Coyle, AP

“deliciously big-hearted documentary” ~ Knopf Doubleday

The documentary features contemporary interviews with a constellation of those who loved Child, including José Andrés; Child’s niece, Phila Cousins; Ina Garten; Charlie Gibson; Jacques Pépin; Child’s nephew, Alex Prud’Homme; Cecile Richards; Marcus Samuelsson; and many more. Throughout JULIA, her family, colleagues, and admirers detail her vast, enduring influence upon American kitchens and culture. “She made it (cooking) look like it was fun,” enthuses Garten in the documentary.

JULIA is directed by Julie Cohen and Betsy West, and produced by Holly Siegel and Imagine Documentaries’ Justin Wilkes and Sara Bernstein. The film is executive produced by Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Michael Rosenberg; Amy Entelis and Courtney Sexton of CNN Films; Oren Jacoby of Storyville Films; Alex Prud’homme; and Bob Spitz. JULIA is produced with the full cooperation of Julia Child’s friends, family, and The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts. The world premiered of the film took place at the 2021 Telluride Film Festival, before its exhibition in theaters by Sony Pictures Classics.

During the May 30 premiere, JULIA, will stream live for subscribers on the CNN OTT app and via CNN.com and CNN mobile apps under “TV Channels.” The film will be available on demand via CNN.com, CNN apps, and cable operator platforms beginning Tuesday, May 31. While watching the film, viewers can comment and interact with other viewers across social media platforms by using the hashtag #JULIAmovie.

CNN+ will shut down at the end of April

By Oliver Darcy and Brian Stelter, CNN Business

Updated 5:34 PM ET, Thu April 21, 2022

New York (CNN Business)CNN+, the streaming service that was hyped as one of the most significant developments in the history of CNN, will shut down on April 30, just one month after it launched.

CNN+ customers “will receive prorated refunds of subscription fees,” the company said.

The decision was made by new management after CNN’s former parent company, WarnerMedia, merged with Discovery to form Warner Bros. Discovery earlier this month.

The prior management team’s vision for CNN+ runs counter to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s plan to house all of the company’s brands under one streaming service. Some CNN+ programming may eventually live on through that service. Other programming will shift to CNN’s main television network.

“In a complex streaming market, consumers want simplicity and an all-in service which provides a better experience and more value than stand-alone offerings, and, for the company, a more sustainable business model to drive our future investments in great journalism and storytelling,” Discovery’s streaming boss J.B. Perrette said in a statement.

“We have very exciting opportunities ahead in the streaming space and CNN, one of the world’s premier reputational assets, will play an important role there,” Perrette added.

Perrette and incoming CNN CEO Chris Licht notified staffers of the decision in a meeting on Thursday afternoon. Licht bluntly told employees it was a “uniquely shitty situation.”

Hundreds of CNN+ staffers may lose their jobs. Licht said in an internal memo that “all CNN+ employees will continue to be paid and receive benefits for the next 90 days to explore opportunities at CNN, CNN Digital and elsewhere in the Warner Bros. Discovery family.”

Staffers who aren’t absorbed elsewhere in the company will receive a minimum of six months of severance, he added.

An agent for one CNN+ host, who was set to anchor a weekly show on the streaming service, described their client’s program at the network as facing an uncertain future. “It’s all TBD,” the person said.

But the agent added that the network has gone out of its way to make clear that it is committed to finding roles for CNN+ hosts.

Licht said in a town hall style meeting with staffers that “this was an incredibly successful launch” but simply incompatible with the newly merged company’s plans.

“It is not your fault that you had the rug pulled out from underneath you,” he said as he vowed to minimize the impacts to staff.

One CNN+ staffer at the town hall described the sentiment as “total and utter shock” that morphed into despair.

“At first people were really freaking out,” explained the person, who requested anonymity to candidly describe the situation. “And then, toward the end of the meeting, it just turned to sadness. Every team was just huddling with each other.”

During the town hall, Perrette expressed some frustration with the “prior leadership” of CNN, which was led by Jeff Zucker until February, and WarnerMedia, which was led by Jason Kilar until early April.

“Some of this was avoidable,” he said, but “prior leadership decided to just keep going” with the planned March launch of CNN+ despite the impending merger, he said.

The streaming service ended up launching just two weeks before the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger completed, much to the exasperation of Discovery leadership, which had a different strategy but could not legally communicate with CNN executives before the deal was official.

Warner Bros. Discovery has billions in debt, much of which is a result of the deal to combine the company, and executives are under pressure to find $3 billion in savings that Wall Street is expecting from them.

The executive vice president in charge of CNN+ and all of CNN’s digital businesses, Andrew Morse, who worked closely with Kilar and Zucker, will depart the company after a transition period.

In a note to employees, Morse described his nine years at CNN as an “incredible ride” and said, “As the company enters an exciting period of change, it’s clear that the vision the new leadership has for the future is different than the one we’ve had. That’s OK. That’s all part of change.”

Licht said in the town hall that he wanted Morse to stay, but respected the decision.

Alex MacCallum, the head of product and general manager of CNN+, will run CNN Digital and work with Licht “to determine a leadership strategy going forward,” the company said in a press release.

On Thursday afternoon, CNN+ employees housed on the 16th floor of Hudson Yards, the network’s New York headquarters, broke out whiskey and wine to commiserate.

The decision to shut down CNN+ just weeks after it launched marked a stunning end to the streaming news service. Executives had touted the application as the most significant launch since Ted Turner founded CNN in 1980.

CNN had poured hundreds of millions of dollars into the new streaming app and lured top talent from other networks for it, including Kasie Hunt from NBC and Chris Wallace from Fox News.

The streaming service featured hours of daily live programming and weekly shows.

That programming will continue to stream through the end of the month.
