CHRIS CHIBNALL AND JODIE WHITTAKER TO LEAVE DOCTOR WHO IN A TRIO OF SPECIALS

CHRIS CHIBNALL AND JODIE WHITTAKER TO LEAVE DOCTOR WHO IN A TRIO OF SPECIALS
CHRIS CHIBNALL AND JODIE WHITTAKER TO LEAVE DOCTOR WHO IN A TRIO OF SPECIALS, CULMINATING IN AN EPIC BLOCKBUSTER SPECIAL TO AIR IN FALL 2022, AS PART OF THE BBC’S CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS
New York – July 29, 2021 – Having been in charge of the TARDIS since filming for the Thirteenth Doctor began in 2017, Showrunner Chris Chibnall and the Thirteenth Doctor, Jodie Whittaker, have confirmed they will be moving on from the most famous police box on Earth – and the universe.

With a six-part season announced for the fall, and two specials already planned for 2022, BBC One has now asked for an additional final feature length adventure for the Thirteenth Doctor, to form a trio of specials for 2022, before the Doctor regenerates once more.

After taking the helm of the show, Chris Chibnall made the ground-breaking decision to cast Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor. He also brought in ‘the fam’ of Tosin Cole (Ryan), Mandip Gill (Yaz) and Bradley Walsh (Graham), and cast the acclaimed Sacha Dhawan as the latest incarnation of The Master, plus Jo Martin as the mysterious Fugitive Doctor, adding new characters, layers and twists to the mythology of the show.

Episodes such as ‘Rosa’, ‘Demons of the Punjab’ and ‘Spyfall’ have thrilled audiences across the globe garnering critical acclaim and award recognition, including two BAFTA Must See Moment nominations, along with multiple National Television Award, BAFTA Cymru, TV Choice, Screen Nation, Hugo, Saturn and Critics Choice nominations. Under Chris’ tenure, the series has been awarded the Visionary Awards TV Show of the Year, the Canadian Rockie Award from the BANFF Television Festival for best sci-fi and genre series, while Mandip Gill and Vinay Patel were recognized with wins from the Eastern Eye Awards. The 2020 series won Best Science Fiction Show voted for by readers at Radio Times.com, beating out competition from The Mandalorian, Lucifer and The Boys, as well as winning both Best Moment and Most Incredible Twist from the Digital Spy Reader Awards 2020, for ‘Fugitive Of The Judoon’ and ‘Ascension Of The Cybermen’. In 2019, the entire current cast and crew were awarded Honorary Doctorates by Sheffield Hallam University for their work on the show.

As the Thirteenth Doctor, Jodie Whittaker stepped aboard the TARDIS to begin filming in 2017. As the first woman to play the iconic role, Jodie has thrilled audiences with her portrayal of the Time Lord, winning the hearts of Doctor Who fans across the globe. Jodie’s multi-layered, warm, funny and inspiring depiction of the Doctor not only created a first in Doctor Who history, but in 2020, Jodie was voted 2nd Most Popular Doctor of all time, coming within a whisker of her friend David Tennant, in a poll of more than 50,000 fans for Radio Times.

Chris Chibnall says “Jodie and I made a ‘three series and out’ pact with each other at the start of this once-in-a-lifetime blast. So now our shift is done, and we’re handing back the TARDIS keys.

“Jodie’s magnificent, iconic Doctor has exceeded all our high expectations. She’s been the gold standard leading actor, shouldering the responsibility of being the first female Doctor with style, strength, warmth, generosity and humour. She captured the public imagination and continues to inspire adoration around the world, as well as from everyone on the production. I can’t imagine working with a more inspiring Doctor – so I’m not going to!

“For me, leading this exceptional team has been unrivalled creative fun, and one of the great joys of my career. I’m so proud of the people we’ve worked with and the stories we’ve told. To finish our time on the show with an additional Special, after the pandemic changed and challenged our production plans, is a lovely bonus. It’s great that the climax of the Thirteenth Doctor’s story will be at the heart(s) of the BBC’s centenary celebrations.

“I wish our successors – whoever the BBC and BBC Studios choose – as much fun as we’ve had. They’re in for a treat!”

Jodie Whittaker adds: “In 2017 I opened my glorious gift box of size 13 shoes. I could not have guessed the brilliant adventures, worlds and wonders I was to see in them. My heart is so full of love for this show, for the team who make it, for the fans who watch it and for what it has brought to my life. And I cannot thank Chris enough for entrusting me with his incredible stories. We knew that we wanted to ride this wave side by side and pass on the baton together. So here we are, weeks away from wrapping on the best job I have ever had. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to express what this role has given me. I will carry the Doctor and the lessons I’ve learnt forever.

“I know change can be scary and none of us know what’s out there. That’s why we keep looking. Travel Hopefully. The Universe will surprise you. Constantly.”

Piers Wenger, Director of BBC Drama, said: “Over the last four years Chris and Jodie have made Doctor Who history and their time on the show is indelibly marked on our memories. From Rosa Parks to Ascension of the Cybermen, Chris and Jodie have given Doctor Who some of its most life-affirming and tear-jerking moments to date and we are beyond excited to see what they have in store for us in the new series this Autumn. Jodie’s final adventure to mark the BBC’s Centenary in 2022 is set to be a Doctor Who Special to remember. I’d like to thank them both for their incredible work on the show.”

Blake Callaway, GM of BBC AMERICA, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to have worked with Chris and Jodie as they ushered in a new era of the Doctor Who franchise, breaking new ground with one of TV’s most iconic heroes and bringing longstanding fans, and new viewers alike, three remarkable seasons. We’re very proud to be a part of a series that, fifty-seven years later, continues to reinvent itself, surprise and delight fans around the world.”

Doctor Who is a BBC Studios production for BBC One and a BBC AMERICA co-production. BBC Studios are the international distributors for Doctor Who.

Experience Untouched Lands Across the Globe Thriving in Isolation

The gorgeous and gripping new docuseries Eden: Untamed Planet premieres Saturday, July 24 at 8pm ET/7c on BBC AMERICA and AMC, and available on AMC+ same day. Narrated by BAFTA Award-winning actress Helena Bonham Carter (The Crown, The King’s Speech), Eden: Untamed Planet invites viewers to travel to the far corners of the planet and discover the secrets of Earth’s few remaining untouched lands, all flourishing with rich biodiversity. Isolated from the rest of the world, life here exists as nature truly intended.

While the remoteness of these Eden’s has protected them from the most damaging effects of human interference, the series will also reflect on the survival of these rare, precious and unique environments amid the perils of the modern world.

Delicately balanced, species-rich, unique ecosystems – this series embarks on a breath-taking journey to Earth’s last Edens.

Episode One – “Borneo: Sacred Forest” – Premieres Saturday, July 24 at 8pm ET/9c on BBCA, AMC and AMC+

Borneo is the richest rainforest island of all; home to 60,000 species of plants and animals. 6,000 of them are unique – and more are discovered almost daily. But this ‘paradise’ is an illusion; the lush forest is effectively growing on a desert, the soil shallow and nutrient poor, leeched by eons of incessant rain. We’ll discover how the intense competition for nutrients here has led to it becoming one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.

This primeval rainforest is one of the oldest in the world, with the tallest tropical trees of all. Straddling the equator, its climate is wet and hot year-round, allowing a myriad of creatures to thrive. Beneath mist-shrouded mountains and dark jungle canopy, this mysterious world is bursting with life.

Produced and Directed by Ingrid Kvale.

As a part of BBC AMERICA’s Wonderstruck programming slate, the six-part series, in addition to a ‘making of’ episode, is a BBC Studios Natural History Unit (NHU) production for BBC AMERICA. The BBC Studios NHU is responsible for producing award-winning and critically-acclaimed series, such as Planet Earth, Blue Planet, Frozen Planet, Life and Seven Words, One Planet. BBC Studios is distributing internationally.

Eden: Untamed Planet is executive produced by Mark Brownlow (Blue Planet II, Planet Earth), series produced by Steve Cole (Thailand: Earth’s Tropical Paradise), scored by Russell Emanuel and composed by Denise Santos and Austin Hammonds for Bleeding Fingers Music.

Production Begins on BBC One, BBC AMERICA and Sister’s Third and Final Series of The Split

Further cast announcements include the return of BARRY ATSMA as Christie, CHUKWUDI IWUJI as Zander and DAMIEN MOLONY as Tyler

Joining the cast will be LARA PULVER (Sherlock)

Dee Koppang O’Leary (Bridgerton, The Crown) begins as lead director

New York, NY – Today, BBC One, BBC America and SISTER are delighted to announce that production has started in London on Abi Morgan’s returning drama – The Split – for the final part of its trilogy. The series will once again be distributed internationally by BBC Studios.

The highly anticipated series, set in the fast-paced, complex world of London’s high-end divorce circuit is created by BAFTA and EMMY award winning writer Abi Morgan (River, Suffragette, The Hour) and Executive Producers Jane Featherstone (Chernobyl, Giri-Haji, Utopia), Lucy Dyke (The Split, Black Mirror, Ripper Street) and Lucy Richer (Small Axe, The Salisbury Poisonings, The A Word).

Alongside the returning three Defoe sisters (Nicola Walker, Annabel Scholey and Fiona Button), their formidable mother Ruth (Deborah Findlay) and Hannah’s husband Nathan (Stephen Mangan), the production today reveals the eagerly awaited return of Christie played by Barry Atsma; the catalyst to the breakdown of Hannah and Nathan’s marriage in series two.

Also returning to The Split for its final series are Damien Molony (Tyler), Chukwudi Iwuji (Zander), Rudi Dharmalingham (James), Elizabeth Roberts (Liv Stern), Ian McElhinney (Prof Ronnie), Anna Chancellor (Melanie Aickman) and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Glen Peters), reprising his role as the Vicar who married Rose and James in season one.

Joining this formidable group is Lara Pulver (Sherlock) playing Kate, a leading child psychologist whose arrival adds a whole new layer of complexity to Morgan’s multi-layered examination of divorce and modern marriage. This farewell series, equal parts electrifying, witty and heart-breaking, continues to put the Defoe sisters and their matriarch at its heart; a group of powerful women working together to help their clients, their colleagues and each other as they continue to navigate the messiness of life.

After audiences were left reeling by the collapse of Hannah and Nathan’s marriage at the end of series two, we join them again ten months on, following the two divorce lawyers as they negotiate their way through their own separation. With Dee Koppang O’Leary (Bridgerton, The Crown) boarding as lead director, Abi Morgan will conclude the trilogy with the most heart-warming and heart-breaking series to date as we watch a divorce lawyer confronted with her own divorce. With Christie making a return combined with a shocking revelation, will Hannah and Nathan repair their broken marriage, or is The Split simply too deep to repair?

Abi Morgan says “For every writer there are characters that stay with them, long after a show is over, Hannah Defoe and her family are just that, and it’s been a welcome balm after a difficult year globally, to reunite this brilliant cast. The Split has been building to this exhilarating final act for the Defoes as they navigate their way through the marital make up and break up, both personally and professionally, at Noble, Hale and Defoe. They say you can’t have new beginnings without endings, and I want to say a big thank you to the BBC and AMC, and the fans who have kept running by our side.”

Sister Co-Founder Jane Featherstone and Executive Producer Lucy Dyke said, “We’re delighted to start production on this glorious third series of The Split. Abi’s scripts are beautiful and we can’t wait for our wonderful cast to bring them to life in the hands of lead-director Dee Koppang O’Leary. We’re also thrilled to be adding Lara Pulver to our Split family this season. Our thanks to the BBC and AMC Networks for their continued commitment and unwavering support. The final part of Hannah and Nathan’s story is, as expected, very emotional – be prepared for tears!”

Lucy Richer, Executive Producer for the BBC, says, “The Split is one of our most-loved and most-talked about drama series and we’re thrilled to be back in production with Series 3. As ever, Abi Morgan’s incredible writing sparkles with truth and honesty, wit and heartbreak. It is fantastic to be back with the Defoes, with Hannah and Nathan facing their biggest challenge yet – how to survive the break up of their marriage, and navigate their own divorce”.

Dan McDermott, president of original programming for AMC Networks says, “We’re excited to start production on The Split’s final series, which will offer BBC America viewers and Sundance Now subscribers the perfect send off for this acclaimed British drama.”

The Split Series 3 will air in 2022. Further TX details to be confirmed.

In the U.S. The Split, Series 3 will air on BBC America and be available to stream on AMC Networks’ streaming service Sundance Now, which also has the first two seasons available now to watch anytime.

About The Split

Created and written by Abi Morgan, The Split is produced by SISTER for BBC One, co-produced with Little Chick and BBC America, and was re-commissioned by Piers Wenger, Director of BBC Drama, Charlotte Moore, Chief Content Officer BBC and Kristin Jones, EVP of international programming, AMC Networks. Series Three is executive produced by SISTER Co- Founder Jane Featherstone (Chernobyl, Giri-Haji, Utopia), writer and creator Abi Morgan (River, Suffragette, The Hour), Lucy Dyke (Black Mirror, Ripper Street) and Lucy Richer for the BBC. Dee Koppang O’Leary (Bridgerton, The Crown) boards as the lead director with Sumrah Mohammed and Emma Genders producing. Casting continues with filming due to start in 2021.

EPISODE DESCRIPTIONS

Episode Two – “Namib: Skeleton Coast and Beyond” – Premieres Saturday, July 31 at 8pm ET/9c on BBCA, AMC and AMC+

The Namib Desert is one of the oldest of all, giving rise to more indigenous species than any other. With 50-degree Celsius temperatures and annual rainfall that is measured in millimeters, how is this possible? We’ll reveal its hidden water sources – such as the mysterious sea fog that sweeps across its Skeleton Coast.

Strange and marvelous desert specialists share this unexpected Eden with giants – lions, elephants and even giraffes. From its ‘Skeleton Coast’ through the ‘sea of sand’ to the haze of distant mountains, this ancient land flourishes with life where none seemed possible.

Produced and Directed by Hannah Hoare.

Episode Three – “Luangwa: The Emerald Valley” – Premieres Saturday, August 7 at 8pm ET/9c on BBCA, AMC and AMC+

At the very end of East Africa’s Great Rift Valley, there’s a ‘land that time forgot’ – the rolling grasslands of the Luangwa Valley. As we travel through the seasons, we find the secret to this Eden’s great riches – the annual flood of the mighty Luangwa River.

Here, the ‘real’ Africa lives on in abundance that is just a memory elsewhere. Luangwa River and its cycle of annual flooding offers up winners and losers, depending on the season. Everything has adapted to take advantage of this ebb and flow and the balance of power constantly changes. During the flood, herbivores range far and wide, making life tough for big cats that depend on prey density. In the dry season the imperative to drink forces herds to congregate near the river… and hungry carnivores cash in.

Produced and Directed by Valeria Fabbri Kennedy.

Episode Four – “Galapagos: Enchanted Isles” – Premieres Saturday, August 14 at 8pm ET/9c on BBCA, AMC and AMC+

In the far-flung tropical Pacific, around 1,000 km from anywhere, lie the Galapagos Islands. On a journey from the lava ramparts of its coast to its fiery heart, we’ll discover how this place became one of the most important areas of biodiversity in the world.

Only the hardiest pioneers could reach this otherworldly outpost – tossed here by storms and strong currents, but they found a virgin land of endless possibilities. With no competition, they could rule supreme – turning this seemingly inhospitable place into their very own Eden. Now, Galapagos is home to almost 2,000 species found nowhere else; 97% of its reptiles and mammals are unique.

Produced and Directed by Joanna Haley.

Episode Five – “Patagonia: The Ends of the Earth” – Premieres Saturday, August 21 at 8pm ET/9c on BBCA, AMC and AMC+

At the far tip of South America, lies a magical realm that seems frozen in time. Known as ‘the end of the world,’ this is Patagonia. Voyaging from high Andes to coastal fjords, we’ll learn that to survive here you have to be as extreme as the country itself – either specialize in one habitat or be tough enough to live in all.

Remote and still largely untouched by humans, Patagonia is a mercurial medley on a grand scale. Its unpredictable polar winds, poisonous lagoons, driest of dry deserts and vast, groaning ice fields make this a hostile place to call home… and yet its inhabitants thrive.

Produced and Directed by Justine Allan.

Episode Six – “Alaska: Last American Frontier” – Premieres Saturday, August 28 at 8pm ET/9c on BBCA, AMC and AMC+

In Southeast Alaska, there’s an ice-bound Eden. Home to possibly the richest temperate rainforest of all, it has the densest concentration of grizzly bears in the world. In a story that follows the seasons, we’ll see that the secret to its great abundance is nature’s greatest migration – the salmon run.

Untamed and inaccessible, this region remains a stronghold for some of North America’s most secretive and charismatic animals. Harsh winters and brief summers can make survival here a toss of the dice, but, one way or another, every animal and plant found here relies on the injection of vital nutrients into the landscape provided by the salmon run. Unbelievably, the arrival of this annual spectacle even allows giant trees to prosper.

Produced and Directed by Emma Fraser.

NOTE TO EDITORS

Eden: Untamed Planet is a six-part series plus a seventh ‘making of’ episode, premiering on Saturday, September 4 at 8pm ET/9c on BBC AMERICA. The episode will also be available on AMC+ on the same day.
