“Ted Lasso” once again becomes the most Emmy Award-winning comedy

Apple TV+ lands nine Emmys total, including four wins for “Ted Lasso,” and honors for “Carpool Karaoke: The Series,” “Severance,” “Schmigadoon!,” and “Home Before Dark”

CULVER CITY, Calif. — At the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, the beloved Apple TV+ hit series “Ted Lasso” joined the ranks of comedy legends with its win for Outstanding Comedy Series for its first and second seasons, becoming only the eighth series in the genre in 74 years of Emmy history to do so. The second season of “Ted Lasso” also became the most Emmy-winning comedy for the second year in a row with four total wins, including Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Jason Sudeikis), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Brett Goldstein), and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series (MJ Delaney).

Apple’s “Ted Lasso” now joins the ranks of only seven other comedy series in history that have landed Outstanding Comedy Series wins in their first two years: “Modern Family,” “30 Rock,” “Frasier,” “The Golden Girls,” “Cheers,” “All in the Family” and “The Phil Silvers Show.”

In total, Apple TV+ landed nine Emmy Awards this year, including five Creative Arts Emmy Awards with “Carpool Karaoke: The Series” earning the top honor for Outstanding Short Form Comedy, its fifth win in a row; celebrated Best Drama Series nominee “Severance” making its Emmy debut with two wins including Outstanding Music Composition for a Series and Outstanding Main Title Design; Apple’s critically acclaimed “Schmigadoon!” winning Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics; and dramatic mystery series “Home Before Dark” landing the previously announced juried award for Outstanding Motion Design.

In addition to this year’s honors for the sophomore season of “Ted Lasso,” the first season of the series also made history at last year’s 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards as the most-nominated freshman comedy series in history, nabbing seven awards in total, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Jason Sudeikis), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Brett Goldstein), Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Hannah Waddingham), Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour), Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series.

Apple Original series, films, and documentaries have now been honored with 275 wins and 1,152 award nominations and counting, including this year’s historic win at the Oscars as “CODA” took home Best Picture and made Apple the first streamer to win the category.

Each episode of “Carpool Karaoke: The Series” features celebrities sharing a car, singing along to their personal playlists, and embarking on adventures. Season five kicks off with Simu Liu and Jessica Henwick; “The White Lotus” costars Murray Bartlett, Alexandra Daddario and Sydney Sweeney; Anitta and Saweetie; Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott, who first met on “Carpool Karaoke”; the stars of All Elite Wrestling; and the D’Amelio family.

“Carpool Karaoke: The Series,” which has won an Emmy for each of its previous four seasons, along with multiple Producers Guild Awards and a Critics Choice Award, is produced for Apple by CBS Studios and Fulwell 73 Productions, with executive producers James Corden, Eric Pankowski, and Ben Winston.

“Home Before Dark”

“Home Before Dark” is a dramatic mystery series inspired by the reporting of a young investigative journalist, Hilde Lysiak. Directed and executive produced by Jon M. Chu, the series follows a young girl named Hilde (played by Brooklynn Prince) who moves from the city of Brooklyn to the small lakeside town her father left behind. While there, her dogged pursuit of the truth leads her to unearth a cold case that everyone in town, including her own father, tried hard to bury.

The series is executive produced by showrunner Dana Fox, Jon M. Chu, Joy Gorman Wettels, Howard Deutch, Dara Resnik, Russel Friend, Garrett Lerner, and Sharlene Martin. It was co-created by Dana Fox and Dara Resnik. The cast includes: Brooklynn Prince, Jim Sturgess, Abby Miller, Kylie Rogers, Aziza Scott, Michael Weston, Joelle Carter, Jibrail Nantambu, Deric McCabe and Rio Mangini.

“Schmigadoon!”

A parody of iconic musicals, “Schmigadoon!” is a new musical comedy series starring Emmy Award nominee Cecily Strong and Emmy Award winner Keegan-Michael Key as a couple on a backpacking trip designed to reinvigorate their relationship when they discover a magical town in which everyone is living in a studio musical from the 1940s. They then discover that they can’t leave until they find “true love.”

The series hails from Broadway Video and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, “Schmigadoon!” is co-created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio. Paul serves as showrunner and wrote all of the original songs for the series. Robert Luketic directs and co-executive produces. Lorne Michaels and Andrew Singer serve as executive producers, Micah Frank serves as co-executive producer, and star Cecily Strong and Caroline Maroney serve as producers.

“Severance”

In “Severance,” Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure, which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in “work-life balance” is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and of himself.

“Severance” is written and created by Dan Erickson. Mark Friedman, Chris Black, John Cameron, and Andrew Colville are executive producers alongside Erickson. Ben Stiller, Nicky Weinstock, and Jackie Cohn executive produce through Red Hour Productions, and both Patricia Arquette and Adam Scott serve as producers. Endeavor Content serves as the studio.

“Ted Lasso”

Jason Sudeikis is Ted Lasso, an American football coach hired to manage a British soccer team – despite having no experience. But what he lacks in knowledge, he makes up for with optimism, underdog determination – and biscuits. The widely acclaimed series also stars Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, Jeremy Swift, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster, and Nick Mohammed.

In addition to starring, Sudeikis serves as executive producer, alongside Bill Lawrence via his Doozer Productions, in association with Warner Bros. and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group. Doozer’s Jeff Ingold also serves as an executive producer, with Liza Katzer as co-executive producer. The series was developed by Sudeikis, Lawrence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly, and is based on the preexisting format and characters from NBC Sports.

Television’s Ted Lasso once again took top honors at the 74th Emmy Awards, with the global hit comedy winning four Emmys tonight, including Outstanding Comedy Series for the second year in a row. And WBTV’s Abbott Elementary made the grade with three Emmys total, including Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for creator/star Quinta Brunson and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Sheryl Lee Ralph this evening.

Topline highlights include:

· Ted Lasso means (repeat) business. For the second year in a row, Ted Lasso scored the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, Jason Sudeikis won once again for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, and Brett Goldstein again took home the trophy for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. And MJ Delaney won her first Emmy for Directing.

· With her win for Writing for a Comedy Series, Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson becomes only the second Black woman in television history to be honored in this category, after Lena Waithe in 2017 for Master of None.

· And with her win for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Abbott Elementary’s Sheryl Lee Ralph received her first Emmy in her distinguished 45-year career. Sheryl becomes only the second Black woman in television history to be honored in this category and the first in 35 years, since Jackée Harry in 1987 for 227.

Esther Smith and Rafe Spall return for new season of the critically acclaimed series

Apple TV+ today announced that acclaimed comedy series “Trying” has been renewed for a fourth season ahead of its third season finale on Friday, September 2.

The third season finds Nikki, played by BAFTA Award nominee Esther Smith, and Jason, played by SAG Award nominee Rafe Spall, waking up as new parents to two children they are still getting to know. Now they just have to keep hold of them, which proves to be trickier than they initially thought. Thrown straight into the parental deep end, Nikki and Jason’s relationships with each other and with their nearest and dearest are tested as they desperately try to navigate the ups and downs of parenting – while hanging onto their kids, and their sanity.

In addition to Smith and Spall, the cast includes Oliver Chris (as Freddy), Sian Brooke (as Karen), BAFTA Award winner Darren Boyd (as Scott) and Robyn Cara (as Jen).

“Trying” is created, written and executive produced by Andy Wolton, directed and executive produced by BAFTA Award nominee Jim O’Hanlon (“Catastrophe,” “Marvel’s The Punisher”) and executive produced by BAFTA Award nominee Josh Cole. The series is produced by BBC Studios.

· Apple TV+ today announced that Academy Award-winner Jennifer Connelly (“A Beautiful Mind,” “Top Gun: Maverick”) is set to star in the highly anticipated Apple Original series adaption of “Dark Matter.” Starring and executive produced by Joel Edgerton, the new nine-episode, sci-fi series based on the blockbuster book by Blake Crouch will be written and showrun by Crouch and will be produced for Apple TV+ by Sony Pictures Television.

· Hailed as one of the best sci-fi novels of the decade, “Dark Matter” is a story about the road not taken. The series will follow Jason Dessen, (played by Edgerton) a physicist, professor, and family man who – one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago – is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the multiverse of lives he could have lived. Apple TV+ announces critically-acclaimed bilingual comedy series “Acapulco” to return for second season

Apple TV+ announced today that the second season of the global hit comedy series “Acapulco,” starring and executive produced by SAG-Award winner Eugenio Derbez, will return on Friday, October 21, 2022. The two-episode season premiere will be followed by a new episode every Friday.

Season two picks up right on the heels of season one, telling the story of twenty-something Máximo Gallardo, whose dream comes true when he scores the job of a lifetime as a cabana boy at the hottest resort in Acapulco, Las Colinas. In 1985, Máximo must contend with upheaval at the resort, unexpected problems at home and a new love interest who just might rival the girl of his dreams. Under Don Pablo’s guidance, he sets his eyes on one day running the entire Las Colinas operation by becoming Diane’s right-hand man. Meanwhile, in present day, Older Máximo returns to Acapulco to make peace with the recent passing of Don Pablo, where he is forced to confront some unfinished business young Máximo left behind.

· Picking up after the explosive events of season one, season two found “The Morning Show” team emerging from the wreckage of Alex (Aniston) and Bradley’s (Witherspoon) actions, to a new UBA and a world in flux, where identity is everything and the chasm between who we present as and who we really are comes into play. The series also received nominations from the Television Critics Association for Outstanding New Program and a TV Choice Award for Best New Drama.

Nicole Beharie Bio:

· Beharie will next be seen in “BREAKING,” a thriller following the devastating true story of Brian Brown-Easley, a disgruntled Marine veteran who held up an Atlanta Wells Fargo Bank out of desperation to bring attention to his plight after not receiving his monthly disability check of $892. Beharie stars opposite John Boyega and Michael K. Williams, and the movie premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where the ensemble cast was honored with the Special Jury Award.

· Also at Sundance 2022, Beharie appeared in “HONK FOR JESUS. SAVE YOUR SOUL.” One of the breakout hits of the festival, the film was picked up for distribution by Focus Features, Peacock and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions with a day-and-date release in theaters and on Peacock. Beharie stars in this indie comedy alongside Regina Hall and Sterling K. Brown, which will be released in September.

· Prior to this, Beharie starred in “MISS JUNETEENTH,” which premiered at Sundance in 2021 to critical acclaim and earned Beharie a Gotham Award win for her performance, as well as an Indie Spirit Award nomination. Her performance was also featured in Time Magazine’s ’10 Best Movie Performances of 2020′ list. Additional feature credits include “42,” “Shame,” “American Violet” and “Monsters And Men.”

· Recent television credits include anthology series “Solos” and the limited series “Scenes From A Marriage” starring opposite Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain. She can also be seen in the limited series “Little Fires Everywhere” and the ‘Striking Vipers’ episode of the hit series “Black Mirror.”
