SONA AND THE KORALesley Stahl profiles Sona Jobarteh, the first female virtuoso player of a centuries-old West African instrument called the kora. With 21 strings, it’s described as a cross between a harp, lute and guitar. Jobarteh, who is 39 years old, descends from one of those griot families – she’s the daughter of a Gambian father and a British mother. Jobarteh argues that by breaking tradition, she is keeping it alive, and she’s gained acceptance in the toughest place of all: The Gambia, with a hit song that’s become the country’s unofficial anthem. Shari Finkelstein is the producer.

“60 MINUTES”’ ANDERSON COOPER SPEAKS WITH BART BARBER IN HIS FIRST NATIONAL TV INTERVIEW AS SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION’S NEWLY ELECTED PRESIDENT

Sunday on “60 Minutes”

60 MINUTES correspondent Anderson Cooper spoke with Bart Barber in his first national television interview as the newly elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention at First Baptist Church in Farmersville, Texas. Cooper asked Barber, the leader of the largest evangelical institution in America, whether he believed the 2020 presidential election was stolen, to which Barber responded, “no.” Barber added, “I do, absolutely” believe Joe Biden is the legitimate president of the United States.

Watch a preview of the interview.

During the one-on-one, Cooper also pressed Barber on the sexual abuse scandal surrounding the Southern Baptist Convention. Barber said, “I have strong feelings about this. I’m–it’s not just anger. Although I’m angry about it. God called me to be a pastor when I was 11. I believe in this. For people to sully this hurts me. I’m not doing this to try to accomplish some PR objective for us. I’m doing this because I wanna serve God well.”

Watch a clip of Barber’s response.

The 60 MINUTES interview will air Sunday, October 9 (7:00 PM, ET/6:00 PM, CT/7:00 PM, PT) on the CBS Television Network.

A transcript of the excerpts is below.

TRANSCRIPT EXCERPT #1:

BART BARBER: In Jesus’ name we pray, amen…

ANDERSON COOPER: BART BARBER MAY BE A SMALL-TOWN PASTOR, BUT HE’S ALSO THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE LARGEST AND MOST INFLUENTIAL EVANGELICAL GROUP IN THE COUNTRY. AS HE PLEDGES TO CLEAN UP AN HISTORIC SEX ABUSE SCANDAL AT THE SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION, WE HAD A SURPRISING, WIDE-RANGING INTERVIEW

COOPER: Do you believe the 2020 election was stolen?

BARBER: No.

COOPER: You believe Joe Biden is the legitimate president of the United States?

BARBER: I do, absolutely.

TRANSCRIPT EXCERPT #2:

COOPER: When you read that report and to read accounts of people who were brave enough to call in to the Executive Committee, to report abuse, for them to be ignored–

BARBER: That’s not a strong enough word. We didn’t just ignore them. Sometimes we impugned their motives. Sometimes we attacked them. The reason why I’m president of the Southern Baptist Convention is because our churches do not agree with that and have taken action to correct those things.

COOPER: BART BARBER SAYS HE’S COOPERATING WITH THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT’S INVESTIGATION AND APPOINTED A NEW 9-MEMBER SEXUAL ABUSE TASK FORCE THAT’S BUILDING A REGISTRY FOR CREDIBLE REPORTS OF ABUSE TO HELP CHURCHES TRACK PREDATORS.

BARBER: I have strong feelings about this. I’m–it’s not just anger. Although I’m angry about it. God called me to be a pastor when I was 11. I believe in this. For people to sully this hurts me. I’m not doing this to try to accomplish some PR objective for us. I’m doing this because I wanna serve God well.
