NEW YORK – June 16, 2022 – On the heels of his role in this summer’s blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, Smithsonian Channel(TM) announced today that actor Jay Ellis (Insecure) will host the second season of their breakout hit series, How Did They Build That?

Season two will continue to cover architectural wonders from all over the world but will have an emphasis on American stories and deconstruct some of the United States’ most amazing structures, including Hearst Tower (NYC), Little Island (NYC), National Museum of African American History and Culture (Washington, DC), Denver Art Museum (Denver, CO), Evergreen Point 520 Floating Bridge and (Seattle, WA). International stories include La Tete Carree (France) the Guggenheim (Spain) and The Gherkin (England), along with many others.

In this epic new season, host Jay Ellis takes viewers around the globe to meet the architects who designed and built these captivating buildings. Through insightful interviews from “star-chitects” Lord Norman Foster, David Adjaye, Daniel Libeskind, Patrik Schumacher, and Santiago Calatrava along with series experts Nehemiah Mabry, Ellie Cosgrave, Corina Kwami and Hayley Loren, viewers will not only learn the exceptional modern engineering secrets that made these modern wonders possible but will also have a first-hand look inside the beautiful and astounding feats of engineering on a scale and complexity never seen before.

About Jay Ellis

Jay Ellis has quickly become one of Hollywood’s most in-demand multi-hyphenates. He was just recently seen opposite Tom Cruise in the smash hit film, Top Gun: Maverick. Ellis also recently wrapped production on the Amazon feature Somebody I Used to Know directed by Dave Franco. With half of the top ten series on cable and a slew of #1 hits from scripted to adult animation to reality – MTVE’s upcoming series, films and specials tap into themes that are resonating with today’s global audiences including family dynamics, love & relationships and social experimentation.

After Yellowstone’s record-breaking season four, MTV Entertainment Studios is ramping up scripted in a big way including a bevy of Taylor Sheridan and 101 Studios’ projects for both Paramount Network and Paramount+. On the network side, in addition to season five of Yellowstone, they have the previously announced 6666, about the merciless endeavor to raise the finest horses and livestock in the world, and American Tragedy: The Waco Trials, exploring the wide-ranging fallout succeeding the tragic events that took place thirty years ago. On the Paramount+ side will be season two of Mayor of Kingstown that is joined by 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, 1932 (w/t), Tulsa King, Land Man and Lioness.

Building on the success of its adult animation slate and on the heels of celebrating the 25th anniversary of South Park, comes the Andy Samberg-produced comedy series Digman!, Jodie, a spin-off of the iconic Daria franchise with Tracee Ellis Ross in the titular role and both a film and series return of Beavis and Butt-Head.

And, with reality continuing to dominate linear and streaming, MTV and VH1 have several high-profile franchise extensions coming down the pike, such as the wildly popular Shores, which sees two new groups of young people sharing a vacation house together. First up is Buckhead Shore – “The Beverly Hills of the South” – where long time friends reunite for their annual blowout trip, and Jersey Shore 2.0 (w/t), which chronicles a new generation of share house roommates hitting the same famed beaches and boardwalks along the Atlantic to make new memories all summer long. · Buckhead Shore – The shore franchise heads to Buckhead, Georgia to follow the interpersonal lives of a group of friends making a name for themselves in the “Beverly Hills of the South” as they escape their everyday life and head to the lake shore to let loose.

· Dating at Sea (w/t) – Daters from all over the world board the ultimate singles cruise, but what they don’t know is there’s a major barrier to finding love – the language barrier, because no one on board speaks the same language. Who will find international love while sailing through international waters?

· Love at First Lie: Who’s A Couple And Who’s A Con – Think you can spot a liar? Play along as couples go head-to-head to uncover who among them are in a genuine relationship and who’s faking their love to con others out of the cash prize.

· Jersey Shore 2.0 (w/t) – It’s been 13 years since the iconic cast of Jersey Shore fist-pumped their way into our lives and stole our hearts. Now, the time-honored tradition continues with a new group of roommates moving into their own Shore house. New Scripted + Animated Series

· 1883: The Bass Reeves Story – An epic limited series that will bring the legendary lawman of the wild west, Bass Reeves, to life. Known as the greatest frontier hero in American history, and also believed to be the inspiration for The Lone Ranger. Reeves worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded.

· 1932 (w/t) – The story will explore the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of prohibition and the great depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home.

· Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe (film) – In perhaps the dumbest space movie ever made, Beavis and Butt-Head are sentenced to Space Camp by a “creative” judge in 1998. Their obsession with a docking simulator (huh huh) leads to a trip on the Space Shuttle, with predictably disastrous results. After going through a black hole, they reemerge in our time, where they look for love, misuse iPhones and are hunted by the Deep State. Spoiler: They don’t score.

· Beavis and Butt-Head (series) – Beavis and Butt-Head are back and stupider than ever.

New campaign follows the May 1st premiere of The Color of Care film, executive produced by Oprah Winfrey, that exposes deep-seated racial disparities in healthcare in the U.S.

NEW YORK – April 14, 2022 – Smithsonian Channel(TM) today has revealed the trailer for The Color of Care documentary and impact campaign, a multi-platform effort to catalyze a movement to eliminate racial disparities in the delivery of U.S. healthcare. The year-long campaign will reach current and future medical professionals as well as impacted communities and policymakers at all government levels to advance solutions toward health equity.

The Color of Care education campaign will work to prepare current and future doctors, nurses and medical professionals to play an active role in combating systemic racism in the delivery of healthcare, as well as provide others with the necessary tools to address this issue and advocate for and empower patients who experience these inequities. This effort follows the premiere of The Color of Care film, produced in partnership between Smithsonian Channel(TM), Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions and OSCAR(R)-nominated and Emmy(R) award-winning director Yance Ford, who also serves as director.

The original documentary, which chronicles how people of color suffer from systemically substandard healthcare in the United States and how COVID-19 exposed the tragic consequences of these inequities, serves as an impetus for a vital reckoning around health equity and is part of a broader effort driven by Smithsonian Channel(TM) to move conversation and action around this topic forward.

“The COVID crisis has exposed gross inequalities in our healthcare system which, if left unaddressed, will again disproportionately impact people of color during the next health emergency,” said James Blue, Head, Smithsonian Channel(TM). “This campaign will work to address these inequalities.”

The campaign will feature multiple activations over the coming months including a digital series highlighting changemakers disrupting the healthcare system, curricular materials for classrooms, and a national grassroots screening tour of The Color of Care film that engages medical and nursing schools, professional healthcare networks and associations, healthcare and medical journalists, non-profit organizations, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Some of the campaigns’ current partners include:

· Paramount’s Content for Change initiative, which seeks to transform the entire creative ecosystem by supporting inclusive creators and content.

· Leading social impact agency Picture Motion Campaigns is providing strategy advisement, curated partnerships, development of a Digital Impact Hub, creation of supplementary educational materials, and grassroots screening activations in key communities to further the movement.

· The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), which is dedicated to transforming health through medical education, health care, medical research, and community collaborations, is a campaign collaborator for medical-school focused screenings.

· The Smithsonian Channel has teamed up with TikTok to exclusively livestream a panel event with MTV News for “The Color of Care,” that will bring together experts to discuss the racial inequities in healthcare and how viewers can take action to address this issue. The panel, hosted by MTV’s Nessa with an introduction by Oprah Winfrey, will stream exclusively @smithsonianchannel on TikTok on Wednesday, April 27th at 7pm ET and features health policy expert and Executive Director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine Daniel E. Dawes, JD; Associate Professor of Social Epidemiology at Ohio State and the founder, director and principal investigator of the Social Epidemiology to Eliminate Disparities (SEED) Lab Shawnita Sealy-Jefferson, PhD, MPH; and family medicine physician and co-founder of The Coalition to Advance Antiracism in Medicine (CAAM) Brittani James, MD.

· PBS Newshour Classroom will develop a series of lesson plans that provide middle and high school teachers and students with opportunities to learn about the history of racism in medical care in the United States and explore solutions connected to current events.

· Smithsonian Affiliations is collaborating with Affiliate organizations around the country to support the campaign through screenings, panel conversations, and digital amplification.

· Bloomberg Philanthropies is an official campaign funder. Its Greenwood Initiative, which aims to accelerate the pace of wealth accumulation for Black individuals and families and address systemic under investment in Black communities, will partner to raise awareness. The Bloomberg Philanthropies Greenwood Initiative has given $100 million to the nation’s four historically Black medical schools to both increase the number of Black doctors in the U.S. by significantly reducing the debt burden of Black medical students, and to ensure equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines through mobile vaccine units. Bloomberg Philanthropies is a global leader of public health programs and launched a series of efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic around the world, including in the U.S.

The Color of Care premieres on May 1, 2022 at 8/7c on the Smithsonian Channel(TM) in the United States and Canada, with premieres in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, and across Latin America shortly afterwards in early May. CBS News’ Gayle King will anchor TRAYVON MARTIN: 10 YEARS LATER, a one-hour special exploring how the senseless shooting of a Florida teenager a decade ago still reverberates in America today. The CBS News Streaming Network and the Smithsonian Channel™ will present the special Saturday, Feb. 26 at 8:00 PM, ET. BET will air the special Monday, Feb. 28 at 8:00 PM, ET, and afterward it will stream on Paramount+.

In addition to anchoring the special, King will sit down for new and emotional interviews with Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, and Breonna Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer, as well as women from Mothers of the Movement, a group founded by Fulton for mothers whose children have been killed by police or gun violence. The hour will draw from King and CBS News’ extensive reporting on the shooting and the aftermath of the incident that left Martin dead, and will tackle the tough issues of race and the killings of young Black men in America by senseless violence.

Zimmerman was later charged with second-degree murder; he was acquitted in July 2013. Strassmann talks with Tracy Martin, Martin’s father, and Ben Crump, who was a little-known attorney at the time, about why he wanted to take up the case and ensure the nation knew Martin’s name. CBS News special correspondent James Brown explores how Martin’s death prompted professional athletes to speak out in solidarity with the Martin family and jumpstart a new wave of activism. And CBS News correspondent Jericka Duncan reports how Zimmerman’s acquittal set the stage for the modern Black Lives Matter movement and many of the protests that have followed over the last decade.

New York, NY – January 18, 2022 – MTV Entertainment Studios and Smithsonian Channel(TM) today announced that One Thousand Years of Slavery – The Untold Story, a riveting docu-series exploring the legacy of slavery and how our shared history can create a better future, is set to premiere on Monday, February 7 at 8pm ET/PT on Smithsonian Channel in the US and Canada to kick-off Black History Month programming. The series will also air in Latin America and Brazil this mid-year.

This four-part limited series uncovers the truth of a 1,000-year story of slavery around the world, as leading Black actors, celebrities and influencers such as Debbie Allen, Valerie Jarrett, Lorraine Toussaint, Soledad O’Brien, CCH Pounder, Senator Cory Booker, Marc Morial and Dulé Hill, among others, go on journeys to confront their personal connection to slavery and its legacy today. From Africa to the Caribbean, from New Orleans to Istanbul, this special series explores slavery’s lasting and personal impact on individuals and society in order to reframe history. Slated to debut every Monday in February, Courtney B. Vance lends his voice to narrate all four-episodes of the limited series.

One Thousand Years of Slavery-The Untold Story, executive produced by Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance’s Bassett Vance Productions, is a follow-up to the U.K. version of the series titled 1000 Years A Slave. Both versions of the series tell the 1,000-year story of how slavery stained the past, shaped the present, and continues to re-write our future with sit-downs featuring Dr. Bernice King, David Harewood, Ray Fearon and others.

NEW YORK – October 21, 2021 – ViacomCBS’ Smithsonian Channel taps the highly acclaimed British actor Hugh Bonneville for two all-new wildlife programs featured in the network’s signature Wild Wednesdays lineup. The award-winning British actor is slated to narrate Wild Tales from the Farm premiering Wednesday, November 3 at 8pm ET/PT and will host The Crown’s Ancient Forest documentary premiering Wednesday, December 1 at 8pm ET/PT on Smithsonian Channel.

The Crown’s Ancient Forest is a captivating one-hour documentary shot in the heart of Southern England where a royal forest lies. Hosted by Hugh Bonneville, cameras capture a wild and magical place of ancient beauty that’s hardly changed since King William the Conqueror proclaimed it as his hunting grounds some 900 years ago. In this one-hour film, witness a remarkable year in the life of the forest, told through the eyes of its most iconic inhabitants: New Forest Pony spring foal, a pair of rare goshawks nesting in the ancient woods and a fallow red deer stag.
