SCIENCE CHANNEL SPOTLIGHTS THE OFTEN UNSEEN HISTORY OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD, NOW REVEALED BY MODERN TECHNOLOGY

Narrated by Actor-Director Clark Johnson, ‘Underground Railroad: The Secret History,’ a Four Part Docu-Series, Premieres Sunday, January 30 at 10 PM ET/PT on Science Channel and
Streaming on discovery+
(NEW YORK) – Much of the history of enslaved people in the United States has gone undocumented. Now, cutting edge technology, and the perseverance of archaeologists and historians, is bringing to light the secret pathways, communities and outposts that provided refuge to Freedom Seekers. Experts are also uncovering crucial details about the people behind those locations, and the individuals who made these life-changing journeys.

Narrated by actor-director Clark Johnson (Homicide: Life on the Street, The Wire, Your Honor, Percy), UNDERGROUND RAILROAD: THE SECRET HISTORY, a four-part docu-series, premieres Sunday, January 30 at 10 PM ET/PT on Science Channel and streaming on discovery+. Viewers can join the conversation on social media by using the hashtag #UndergroundRailroadTheSecretHistory and follow Science Channel on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for the latest updates.

To be successful, the Underground Railroad had to operate in secrecy – therefore, little written documentation about these journeys exists. Now, new technology and extensive research are revealing that the Underground Railroad’s path not only led north – from southern U.S. states where slavery was legal into free northern states and Canada. But it also took surprising turns to the south, all the way into Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean. The details uncovered also show that stops in the north often proved as dangerous as those in the states from which Freedom Seekers fled.

From secret hideaways located in graveyards just outside of the nation’s capital and underground tunnels originally built by George Washington, to a refuge deep in a swamp, the series uses thermal drones, LiDAR, GPR and GIS to map and record the hidden underground tunnels, remote caves and thriving yet isolated communities used by Freedom Seekers escaping enslavement.

Across the series, viewers will hear from the descendants of Freedom Seekers who add insight with their family history, passed down from generation to generation. Audiences also hear from archaeologists including Dr. Justin Dunnavant of UCLA, Dr. Ayana Omilade Flewellen of UC Riverside, Dr. Cheryl LaRoche of the University of Maryland, Dr. Dan Sayers of American University, Jeffrey Shanks of the National Park Service and Dr. Terrance Weik of University of South Carolina, as well as historians and academics including Anthony Cohen, President of the Menare Foundation, Lisa Fager of the Mt. Zion-FUBS Foundation, Dr. Maria Hammack of University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander of Norfolk State University, Dr. Rolonda Teal of Steven F. Austin State University and Dr. Javier Wallace of Duke University. These experts share their research and discoveries, giving valuable context to these stories and helping to solidify the legacies of those who sought freedom on the Underground Railroad.

In the series premiere, we travel south into Florida, Texas and Mexico. Archaeologists unravel the mystery of a free Black fort in Florida that was nearly erased from history by the U.S. military. After two centuries, little evidence of its existence can be seen at the site today. What can the latest technology reveal about the people who lived in this stronghold and its ultimate demise? And in Texas, oral tradition points to nature as an important resource, and now, thermal drones are uncovering Texas caves that provided shelter to those heading toward the treacherous Rio Grande on the way to Mexico.

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD: THE SECRET HISTORY brings new focus on courageous Freedom Seekers and their allies in this critical chapter of American history. These are the stories of those who risked their lives in the ultimate pursuit of freedom, and the ingenious methods used achieve liberty.

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD: THE SECRET HISTORY is produced by Attraction for Science Channel. For Attraction, Producer is Nicole Hamilton, Executive Producers are Joey Case and Richard Speer, and Series Producer is Margot Daley. For Science Channel, Executive Producers are Caroline Perez and Lindsey Foster Blumberg and Co-producer is Andrew Lessner.

SCIENCE CHANNEL ANNOUNCES TWO SPECIALS ON THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED DECEMBER LAUNCH

SCIENCE CHANNEL ANNOUNCES TWO SPECIALS ON THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED DECEMBER LAUNCH OF THE JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE
Pre-launch Special To Air Tuesday, December 21 at 10 PM ET/PT and Post-Launch Special to air Sunday, December 26 at 10 PM ET/PT on Science Channel
(LOS ANGELES) – The world’s most powerful observatory – the James Webb Space Telescope – is set for launch this month after over 25 years of development and construction. Science Channel, the leader of all things space, will take viewers inside this incredible feat of technology and its launch with two specials.

BEYOND HUBBLE: The Telescope of Tomorrow, airing Tuesday, December 21 at 10 PM ET/PT on Science Channel, has everything you need to know about the upcoming launch taking place in French Guiana, including the story of the telescope’s construction, its extensive testing and preparation for launch. Using the latest CGI animation technology, Science Channel will follow the journey and share the incredible cosmological images and mysteries that scientists believe the telescope will capture.

This super-telescope is the next generation successor to the Hubble Space Telescope with a mirror 6 times bigger. The estimated cost of constructing and operating the telescope is close to $10 billion. The telescope will also be able to peer back in time. For the first time in space exploration, scientists will be able to explore the formation of the first stars and galaxies and search for planets that can support life. But just what will it see?

Then on Sunday, December 26 at 10 PM ET/PT, Science Channel will broadcast a follow up BEYOND HUBBLE special that will include all the exciting moments from its launch. ARCHAEOLOGISTS UNCOVER NEW FINDINGS NEAR STONEHENGE THAT CHALLENGE EVERYTHING WE KNOW ABOUT THE MYSTERIOUS MONUMENT AND THOSE WHO CREATED IT

‘STONEHENGE: LAND OF THE DEAD’ Premieres Sunday, November 28 at 8 PM ET/PT on Science Channel

(LOS ANGELES) – Each year over a million people from around the world travel to Wiltshire, England to see Stonehenge, the most recognizable prehistoric monument in Europe, and to experience its mystical majesty. But what if just miles away archaeologists made a discovery that would reveal an even more ground-breaking prehistoric monument 20 times bigger than Stonehenge? STONEHENGE: LAND OF THE DEAD, premiering on Sunday, November 28 at 8 PM ET/PT on Science Channel, will allow viewers to follow experts as they use cutting-edge technology to uncover a previously unknown subterranean ring. This new discovery starts to unravel the secrets of Stonehenge and completely change our understanding of the monument and the people who built it.

Engineer Rob Bell is investigating and following experts in real time as they uncover secrets, discovering that what we thought we knew could be wrong. New findings will not only change our understanding of the entire Stonehenge landscape but the Neolithic people who created it. This 2-hour special pieces together the evidence as scientists and archaeologists reveal a giant ring 20 times the size of Stonehenge that, until now, has been completely hidden from sight – created over 4,000 years ago.

Generations of experts have studied Stonehenge, but the motivation behind the construction of the monument has remained a mystery. These new investigations into the sacred landscape surrounding Stonehenge may hold the keys to unlocking the past. Just 2 miles east of Stonehenge, a team of archaeologists led by world-renowned landscape archaeologist Vince Gaffney uses advanced technology to investigate a ring of underground anomalies. Were these in fact man-made, or could something else explain what appears to be the largest prehistoric monument of its kind in the world?

World-renowned Stonehenge expert and archaeologist Susan Greaney lends her expertise to shed light on how and why the Neolithic people may have created this monument and how the new discovery is redefining historians’ initial hypotheses. The special will show viewers the archaeological landscape surrounding Stonehenge like never before. This updated perspective will paint a new picture of the Neolithic society that inhabited the area and built the monument thousands of years ago.

Follow the conversation on social media with #StonehengeLandOfTheDead, and follow Science Channel on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for more updates.

STONEHENGE: LAND OF THE DEAD is produced by Wild Blue Media for Science Channel and distributed internationally by Fremantle. It is Produced and Directed by Kate Dooley and Executive Produced by Cameron Balbirnie and Gary Hunter. For Science Channel, executive producer is Lindsey Foster Blumberg.

(LOS ANGELES) – As the holidays approach, Science Channel has a line-up of compelling weekly specials for the entire family, airing Sunday nights at 8 PM ET/PT throughout the month of November. These specials are the ultimate dinner conversation starters, shining light on some of the world’s most incredible archeological monuments.

Are humans ultimately responsible for the Mayan civilization collapse? Could the myth of the Trojan horse be based on a real event? And what really happened during Julius Caesar’s reign?

Science Channel is tackling the biggest archeological discoveries and using the latest scientific technology and 3D animation to bring these stories to life.

The programming lineup will include –

· LOST TOMBS OF THE MAYA, a 2-hour special premiering Sunday, November 7 at 8 PM ET/PT on Science Channel, will follow a team using the latest technology to search for clues to what caused the Maya to abandon their cities in the 9th century AD. Was it a climate disaster? Or human activity that ultimately caused their collapse? The special will also look at the technology used to scan a temple where they believe the tomb of Copan’s 15th king is hidden inside. Now, new evidence reveals more about this notorious tale. In Turkey, investigators have unlocked new secrets about the past – excavating ruins of a city that some believe could be Troy itself. Did the war really take place at this spot? And could the Trojan Horse myth be based on a real event? The special will travel to Amsterdam, where archaeologists reexamine the pioneering work of early explorers. It will also take viewers to Greece where a team of archaeologists have discovered the remains of a wealthy town that could be linked to the famous story. Will clues hidden in the treasures unravel the secrets of the area?

· CAESAR’S DOOMSDAY WAR, premiering Sunday, November 21 at 8 PM ET/PT on Science Channel, will delve into one of history’s most recognizable figures, Julius Caesar. For centuries, the truth about what exactly happened during Caesar’s reign has been shrouded in mystery. Now archaeologists are hoping to uncover what really happened. The all-new special explores the events of the war and the Gaul people, tracing their origins and follows the events that gave them such a terrifying reputation in Rome. Archeologists will take viewers along their hunt to find clues behind the lost cities of the Gauls and investigate where their wealth came from. Using 3D animation, the special brings to life the technology believed to be used at the time and charts key moments in Caesar’s conquest.

LOST CITY OF THE MONKEY GOD, premiering Sunday, October 31 at 8 PM ET/PT on Science Channel, will take viewers along on the journey to find a settlement whose existence explorers and scholars have long debated.

World-renowned explorer Steve Elkins and a team of archaeologists, anthropologists, scientists and filmmakers embark upon a true-life adventure where they must overcome torrential rains, dense jungles, poisonous reptiles and deadly disease carrying flies to search one of the last unexplored places on Earth known as “Ciudad Blanca” or The Lost City of the Monkey God.

For centuries, adventurers and treasure hunters have searched for the rumored Honduran city said to be built of a beautiful white marble-like stone. Stories are legendary of the treasure trove said to be built deep within the lush rainforest with impenetrable high mountains, deep rivers and obstacles guarding it. It’s a dangerous journey, taking many lives along the way, earning it a reputation with locals that the city is cursed.

Elkins and his team are going in deep and using the latest cutting-edge technology and science to help locate the city once and for all. However, they’ll need more than just high tech to accomplish their mission. The team must build trust with locals, government officials, drug cartels and the military in order to make inroads. But can Elkins and his team locate this fabled place of treasure and riches in time to properly excavate artifacts and preserve the area from the ravages of time
