JOURNEY THROUGH THE COSMOS WITH TV HOST MIKE ROWE IN AN ALL NEW SEASON OF “HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS” ON SCIENCE CHANNEL AND DISCOVERY+

The New Season Kicks Off March 24 on Science Channel and discovery+ with Mike Rowe as Narrator

Since the beginning of human civilization, we’ve looked to the sky in complete awe, wondering what the stars are made of, where they came from and why they’re so distant. Some of the greatest minds in our history have spent lifetimes trying to figure out how our Universe works, how it was created, and how it will end. In an all new season of HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS, narrated by MIKE ROWE, Science Channel journeys through the cosmos in search of these answers and more. Combining interviews with leading scientists from the world’s foremost organizations, including NASA and CERN, with cutting edge CGI and visual effects, HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS unravels the greatest mysteries of the Universe and beyond.

An all new season of HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS premieres Wednesday, March 24 at 9pm ET/PT on Science Channel and also streams on discovery+. In addition to watching the series on Science Channel, viewers can also stream new episodes of HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS on discovery+. Join the conversation on social media by using the hashtag #HowTheUniverseWorks, and follow Science Channel on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for the latest updates. You can also follow discovery+ on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

Kicking off the all new season, HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS dives deep into Black Holes journeying to the Super Massive Black Hole at the heart of the M87 galaxy. This Black Hole, known as M87*, is the only Black Hole to ever be photographed. The captured image revealed that M87* is over six billion times more massive than the sun and a total of 23.6 billion miles across. In the special premiere episode, experts take a deeper look at this famed Black Hole and along the way witness blazing hot winds, death-ray jets and a place near the Event Horizon where time seemingly stands still. We finally enter the Black Hole and travel towards the Singularity, a place where the laws of physics fail.

Also this season, scientists explore how galaxies fight and why our Universe is such a violent, dangerous place. Many galaxies tear each other apart using gravity – the bigger the galaxy, the more heavily armed it is, allowing it to smash and swallow up smaller galaxies nearby. Experts look to our own galaxy, the Milky Way, and what battles it has endured in the past and what kind of trouble is brewing on the horizon. The Sun also takes center stage this season, as experts from NASA seek to understand our home star better and its dangerous, unpredictable solar eruptions by assembling a fleet of spacecraft to study the Sun. Diving through the gases of the Sun’s atmosphere, and tracking the Sun’s influence at the edge of our solar system, scientists may be able to unlock the secrets of the engine that drives our entire Solar System.

HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS is produced for Science Channel and discovery+ by Pioneer Productions. Stephen Marsh is the executive producer for Pioneer Productions. For Science Channel, Wyatt Channell is executive producer and Robyn Salzman is associate producer.

A NEW WAY TO LOOK AT THE WORLD’S GREAT CREATIONS: SCIENCE CHANNEL’S ‘IF WE BUILT IT TODAY’

A NEW WAY TO LOOK AT THE WORLD’S GREAT CREATIONS: SCIENCE CHANNEL’S ‘IF WE BUILT IT TODAY’
RETURNS FOR AN ALL-NEW SEASON JANUARY 24

What would it look like to reimagine the world’s greatest monuments and structures from throughout history? How would we go about it? What would it cost? What role do politics, science, and design play in their creation? And what elements can we take with us from past builds to ensure we are best representing these important, historically significant structures and cities today. In an all-new season of IF WE BUILT IT TODAY, experts re-imagine the world’s most impressive building projects to reveal how much time, labor, and investment would be necessary to build the most astounding structures in today’s world.

An all-new season of IF WE BUILT IT TODAY kicks off Sunday, January 24 at 8 pm ET/PT on Science Channel with a special two-hour season premiere episode. With the help of architectural experts and urban planners and developers, experts use modern engineering and the latest technology to create a 21st century blueprint for a reimagined Washington, DC. As the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Memorial approaches, and with an election year that directed all attention to Washington, this two-hour episode explores what the future holds for the landmark-packed capital of the United States – and how its iconic collection of buildings and monuments act as the symbolic heart of a nation. Detailing the early plans for Washington DC and taking cues from evolving capital city plans from Ancient Egypt and Europe, experts survey what the capital might look like if we built it today.

Traveling to Machu Picchu and Malta, France, and beyond, viewers will discover some of the most famous places from around the world through a new lens. The Parthenon, one of the most beautiful structures globally, is also one of the most important surviving buildings of ancient Greece. But how would we go about building beautiful structures today, and how would we use science to measure that beauty?

Built in 1890, Carnegie Hall remains the crown jewel of concert halls with its incomparable acoustics and masterful construction. So how can a room that’s more than a century old, built without modern materials or technology, be so superior to later constructions? Applying ancient knowledge about the science of sound from Ancient Greece, experts explore the secrets of stadium rock and whether it’d be possible to build a modern concert hall equal to this crown jewel without powerful amplifiers or electricity.

Also this season, Hoover Dam is reimagined as an eco-friendly undertaking utilizing perpetual motion and solar power, the Titanic is rebuilt as it was imagined to be – the unsinkable ship, and Stonehenge is constructed in a world where the advantages made possible by digital technology exist at our fingertips. IF WE BUILT IT TODAY is a thoughtful exploration of what we’ve gained and lost in our race to the future and offers a new way of looking at our greatest creations from throughout history.

In addition to watching IF WE BUILT IT TODAY on Science Channel, viewers can join the conversation on social media by using the hashtag #IfWeBuiltitToday and following @ScienceChannel on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

NEW SCIENCE CHANNEL SERIES SPOTLIGHTS THE KENSINGTON RUNESTONE

NEW SCIENCE CHANNEL SERIES SPOTLIGHTS THE KENSINGTON RUNESTONE
AND ITS POTENTIAL TO REWRITE HISTORY IN

‘SECRETS OF THE VIKING STONE’

Were Norsemen the first Europeans to explore the Minnesota-Great Lakes and surrounding area more than a century before Christopher Columbus? Some scholars and fervent theorists believe so and are ready to fortify their beliefs with proof. In an all-new Science Channel series, SECRETS OF THE VIKING STONE, actor Peter Stormare, known for his role in FARGO, and history enthusiast Elroy Balgaard set out to solve the mystery of the famed Kensington Runestone – an artifact that, if proven authentic, could rewrite the history of North America.

SECRETS OF THE VIKING STONE premieres Sunday, January 3, 2021 at 10pm ET/PT on Science Channel. In addition to watching SECRETS OF THE VIKING STONE on Science Channel, viewers can join the conversation on social media by using the hashtag #SecretsoftheVikingStone and following @ScienceChannel on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Throughout their deeply personal, often humorous journey across the country to uncover the truth about the founding of America through meetings with scholars, skeptics and sensationalists alike, Stormare and Balgaard dive deep into the story of the Kensington Runestone and its controversial history. Discovered in 1898 by a Swedish-born resident Olof Ohman in Kensington, Minnesota, the Runestone, a large stone slab, was found under the roots of a tree with an inscription in an alphabet unknown to scholars at the time. Its discovery was published in a Swedish-language newspaper in Minneapolis, which quickly launched one of the greatest mysteries in American history.

With naysayers questioning its authenticity, citing the fabricated inscription and timeline discrepancies, and supporters turning to historical evidence such as possible 14th-century Scandinavian expeditions to North America, the Kensington Runestone has divided many and has remained a source of debate among historians, experts, linguists, conspiracy theorists and scholars since its discovery.

Meeting with passionate enthusiasts around the country, Stormare and Balgaard leave no stone unturned as they meet with descendants of Ohman to learn more about the family’s dark history and the stone’s discovery, work alongside leading archaeologists to survey new sites and unearth new evidence, and hear new ground breaking insights from top forensic geologists who have dedicated their careers to the stone.

SECRETS OF THE VIKING STONE blends truth with fantasy, science with theory, and puts scholars and skeptics together in the same room to determine whether the Kensington Runestone holds the key to rewriting history as we know it.

SECRETS OF THE VIKING STONE is produced for Science Channel by Viking Brothers Entertainment and Nordic Entertainment Group. For Viking Brothers Entertainment, Glenn Lund and Peter Stormare are the directors and Nina Lund and Mando Stathi are the producers. For Science Channel, Lindsey Foster Blumberg is supervising producer.

SCIENCE CHANNEL SEEKS TO SOLVE THE WORLD’S MOST ENDURING MYSTERIES WITH NEW FORENSIC SCIENCE IN ALL NEW SERIES “CONSPIRACIES DECODED” PREMIERING DECEMBER 3

Was the Titanic doomed before it set sail? Does the Turin Shroud really show Jesus Christ? Has Amelia Earhart’s body finally been found? Today, cutting edge forensic science may hold the key to solving these questions and more. In an all new Science Channel series, CONSPIRACIES DECODED, experts travel across the globe and back in time as they seek to solve history’s greatest mysteries using state-of-the-art CGI and ground-breaking forensic science.

The all new 10-part Science Channel series, CONSPIRACIES DECODED, premieres Thursday, December 3 at 10pm ET/PT on Science Channel. In addition to watching CONSPIRACIES DECODED on Science Channel, viewers can join the conversation on social media by following @SCIENCECHANNEL on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and using the hashtag #ConspiraciesDecoded.

Throughout CONSPIRACIES DECODED, experts revisit the most enduring and inexplicable crimes and conspiracies from throughout history, applying new forensic science techniques and stunningly accurate CGI to reconstruct each scrap of astonishing evidence and potentially uncover answers that were once thought impossible.

Showcasing the multiple branches of forensic science throughout the season – such as digital retouching, hair, bone and fingerprint analysis, as well as forensic facial reconstruction – CONSPIRACIES DECODED gives viewers a peek behind the curtain of some of the most cutting-edge scientific techniques paired with stunningly accurate and detailed imagery that brings each mystery vividly to life.

Some mysteries investigated this season include the bizarre sinking of the USS Scorpion, a submarine that sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean following an unexplained explosion that killed 99 crewmen in 1968. A Naval report claims a faulty torpedo was to blame, but new examinations and an updated forensic approach suggests there may have been something else at play. Also this season, a possible conclusion to the decades long mystery behind the disappearance of Amelia Earhart. While many believe Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan were shot down in Japanese waters during their flight, new analysis and the re-discovery of human remains found on a Pacific Island suggest it’s possible to piece together Earhart’s final days, painting a much different story than what’s in the history books.

Mixing state-of-the-art forensic science and astonishing CGI with powerful, first-hand stories, CONSPIRACIES DECODED gives viewers a front row seat to the world’s most compelling and puzzling mysteries as experts decode clues and bring each story back to life.

Ghosts from Throughout History: An All New Season of “Mysteries of the Abandoned”

Ghosts from Throughout History: An All New Season of “Mysteries of the Abandoned” Premieres December 3 on Science Channel
Once important and significant sites and structures across the globe, today these abandoned marvels are mere ghosts of their once rich – sometimes haunting – history.

GHOSTS FROM THROUGHOUT HISTORY: AN ALL NEW SEASON OF “MYSTERIES OF THE ABANDONED” PREMIERES DECEMBER 3 ON SCIENCE CHANNEL

An abandoned North Carolina ghost town which briefly served as the backdrop for the dystopian blockbuster film The Hunger Games. A world-renowned yoga center nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas that once recruited the likes of The Beatles and Mia Farrow in search for Nirvana, now untouched and left alone for decades. A vast labyrinth of subterranean tunnels lying beneath the busy streets of Ukraine with ties to KGB spies, Nazis and criminals who once called the catacombs home.

Once important and significant sites and structures across the globe, today these abandoned marvels are mere ghosts of their once rich – sometimes haunting – history. In an all new season of Science Channel’s hit series, MYSTERIES OF THE ABANDONED, experts reveal the stories behind these remarkable places and why they were left behind.

MYSTERIES OF THE ABANDONED premieres Thursday, December 3 at 9pm ET/PT on Science Channel. In addition to watching MYSTERIES OF THE ABANDONED on Science Channel, viewers can join the conversation on social media by using the hashtag #MysteriesoftheAbandoned and following @ScienceChannel on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Throughout this season, viewers will travel around the world to uncover the mysteries behind these massive structures and abandoned sites on the brink of collapse. After decades of decay, withstanding erosion, disasters and wars, each of these structures stand to tell their own unique story.

In the northern Dead Sea, a once popular Israeli tourist resort closed suddenly when the safety of guests became of grave concern due to a massive sinkhole engulfing a parking lot, rooms and several palm trees. Once a sought-after destination for travelers around the world, today the buildings stand abandoned as the Dead Sea retreats and more sinkholes emerge at an alarming rate. Sitting high in a sheer cliff face on the Italian island of Sardinia, a strange castle remains eerily abandoned, begging many to wonder what its purpose was at one point in time. Was it built as a defensive structure, or meant to serve as a solution to an impossible engineering problem for nearby mining operations?

Also this season, on a mysterious volcanic island in the East China sea, strange structures sit eerily on a large plateau littered with concrete ‘caves,’ unnatural tunnels and echoes of a dark past. Now a popular destination for visitors eager to understand its shadowed history, this island was once the staging post for untold destruction, anti-communist violence and the killing of thousands of people over time.

Throughout MYSTERIES OF THE ABANDONED, these structures, sites, villages, ruins and more are brought back to life with advanced CGI modeling to help tell the stories of these lost worlds and their haunted pasts.

MYSTERIES OF THE ABANDONED is produced for Science Channel by Like A Shot Productions. For Like A Shot, Henry Scott and Steve Gillham are executive producers. For Science Channel, Neil Laird is executive producer and Andrew Lessner is producer.

“We are thrilled to once again have such incredible access that can only be found on Discovery and Science Channel,” said Scott Lewers, Executive Vice President of Multiplatform Programming, Factual & Head of Content, Science. “For this moment of international unity and hope, we will bring our viewers together to witness a spectacular celebration of space exploration”

NASA’s SpaceX Crew-1 mission will launch astronauts Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker and Japan Aerospace Exploration astronaut Soichi Noguchi from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The astronauts will arrive at the ISS to join NASA astronaut Kate Rubins, as well as Expedition 64 commander Sergey Ryzhikov and flight engineer Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, both of the Russian space agency Roscosmos.

This latest multiplatform event marks the third live broadcast of historic space events for Discovery and Science Channel in partnership with The Washington Post and staff writer Christian Davenport, whose depth of experience allowed him to gain inside access to key players. Davenport is one of the country’s leading chroniclers of the space industry. His background and experience will add keen insight to the day’s event, as a co-host of the live broadcast. Davenport joined The Post in 2000 and was on a team that won a Peabody Award in 2010 for its work on veterans with traumatic brain injuries and has been on reporting teams that were finalists for the Pulitzer Prize three times. He is the author of two books, “The Space Barons: Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and the Quest to Colonize the Cosmos” (2018) and “As You Were: To War and Back with the Black Hawk Battalion of the Virginia National Guard” (2009). He has also served as a Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and a fellow at the Alicia Patterson Foundation.

“At The Washington Post, we are committed to providing authoritative and compelling coverage of the universe and our place in it,” said David Cho, Business Editor at The Washington Post. “Together with Discovery, we look forward to bringing viewers closer to this momentous launch. Christian’s deep knowledge of the space industry will help viewers better understand the event and what it means for the future of space travel.”

The live broadcast will have unprecedented coverage of the launch as well as expert commentary from current and former astronauts, including Peggy Whitson, Leland Melvin, Mike Massimino and Garrett Reisman, top engineers and other special guests, including adventurer and avid explorer Josh Gates.

TV personality Chris Jacobs will also return as host. Jacobs has a long history with Discovery network live events, reporting live on-the-ground for EXPEDITION UNKNOWN: EGYPT LIVE as well as serving as the digital host during Nik Wallenda’s tightrope walk over the Grand Canyon in SKYWIRE LIVE and in Chicago for SKYSCRAPER LIVE. Jacobs was host for DISCOVERY LIVE: INTO THE BLUE HOLE, CHOPPER LIVE, GOLD RUSH LIVE and the live broadcast of the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction for Velocity (now MotorTrend). In addition, he is the regular host for TLC’s LONG LOST FAMILY and serves as host of the popular automotive makeover show OVERHAULIN’ on MotorTrend.

Emmy Award-winning journalist David Kerley will also return as part of the reporting team. Kerley reported on aviation, railroads, the automobile industry and space for all ABC News broadcast and digital properties, including World News Tonight, Good Morning America, Nightline, ABC News Radio and ABCNews.com. His work has been recognized with Peabody and Edward R. Murrow awards as well as the prestigious Joan Barone award from the Capitol Hill Radio and Television Correspondents Association.

In May, Discovery and Science Channel, in partnership with The Washington Post, documented the first launch of NASA astronauts from the United States since the end of the shuttle program in 2011. This successful test mission was a partnership between NASA and SpaceX, and the first U.S. crewed mission to orbit on a privately built spacecraft. Astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley traveled to the ISS in the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, propelled by the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Discovery and Science Channel’s coverage drove record ratings — ranking as the #1 telecast for the entire day across major demos and the highest-rated telecast in the history of Science Channel. In August, Discovery and Science Channel went live once again to simulcast of the splashdown return of the SpaceX Crew Dragon, an event that also ranked as the no. 1 telecast for the day across key demos.

In addition to watching the return on Discovery and Science Channel, viewers can stream it live by downloading the Discovery GO app. Fans can also create photos and videos of themselves in space wearing life-like SpaceX helmets using Discovery’s Space Filter on Facebook or Instagram.
