An all-new season of IF WE BUILT IT TODAY kicks off Sunday, January 24 at 8 pm ET/PT on Science Channel with a special two-hour season premiere episode. With the help of architectural experts and urban planners and developers, experts use modern engineering and the latest technology to create a 21st century blueprint for a reimagined Washington, DC. As the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Memorial approaches, and with an election year that directed all attention to Washington, this two-hour episode explores what the future holds for the landmark-packed capital of the United States – and how its iconic collection of buildings and monuments act as the symbolic heart of a nation. Detailing the early plans for Washington DC and taking cues from evolving capital city plans from Ancient Egypt and Europe, experts survey what the capital might look like if we built it today.

Traveling to Machu Picchu and Malta, France, and beyond, viewers will discover some of the most famous places from around the world through a new lens. The Parthenon, one of the most beautiful structures globally, is also one of the most important surviving buildings of ancient Greece. But how would we go about building beautiful structures today, and how would we use science to measure that beauty?

Built in 1890, Carnegie Hall remains the crown jewel of concert halls with its incomparable acoustics and masterful construction. So how can a room that’s more than a century old, built without modern materials or technology, be so superior to later constructions? Applying ancient knowledge about the science of sound from Ancient Greece, experts explore the secrets of stadium rock and whether it’d be possible to build a modern concert hall equal to this crown jewel without powerful amplifiers or electricity.

Also this season, Hoover Dam is reimagined as an eco-friendly undertaking utilizing perpetual motion and solar power, the Titanic is rebuilt as it was imagined to be – the unsinkable ship, and Stonehenge is constructed in a world where the advantages made possible by digital technology exist at our fingertips. IF WE BUILT IT TODAY is a thoughtful exploration of what we’ve gained and lost in our race to the future and offers a new way of looking at our greatest creations from throughout history.

Throughout their deeply personal, often humorous journey across the country to uncover the truth about the founding of America through meetings with scholars, skeptics and sensationalists alike, Stormare and Balgaard dive deep into the story of the Kensington Runestone and its controversial history. Discovered in 1898 by a Swedish-born resident Olof Ohman in Kensington, Minnesota, the Runestone, a large stone slab, was found under the roots of a tree with an inscription in an alphabet unknown to scholars at the time. Its discovery was published in a Swedish-language newspaper in Minneapolis, which quickly launched one of the greatest mysteries in American history.

With naysayers questioning its authenticity, citing the fabricated inscription and timeline discrepancies, and supporters turning to historical evidence such as possible 14th-century Scandinavian expeditions to North America, the Kensington Runestone has divided many and has remained a source of debate among historians, experts, linguists, conspiracy theorists and scholars since its discovery.

Meeting with passionate enthusiasts around the country, Stormare and Balgaard leave no stone unturned as they meet with descendants of Ohman to learn more about the family’s dark history and the stone’s discovery, work alongside leading archaeologists to survey new sites and unearth new evidence, and hear new ground breaking insights from top forensic geologists who have dedicated their careers to the stone.

Also this season, a possible conclusion to the decades long mystery behind the disappearance of Amelia Earhart. While many believe Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan were shot down in Japanese waters during their flight, new analysis and the re-discovery of human remains found on a Pacific Island suggest it’s possible to piece together Earhart’s final days, painting a much different story than what’s in the history books.

Throughout this season, viewers will travel around the world to uncover the mysteries behind these massive structures and abandoned sites on the brink of collapse. After decades of decay, withstanding erosion, disasters and wars, each of these structures stand to tell their own unique story.

In the northern Dead Sea, a once popular Israeli tourist resort closed suddenly when the safety of guests became of grave concern due to a massive sinkhole engulfing a parking lot, rooms and several palm trees. Once a sought-after destination for travelers around the world, today the buildings stand abandoned as the Dead Sea retreats and more sinkholes emerge at an alarming rate. Sitting high in a sheer cliff face on the Italian island of Sardinia, a strange castle remains eerily abandoned, begging many to wonder what its purpose was at one point in time. Was it built as a defensive structure, or meant to serve as a solution to an impossible engineering problem for nearby mining operations?

Also this season, on a mysterious volcanic island in the East China sea, strange structures sit eerily on a large plateau littered with concrete ‘caves,’ unnatural tunnels and echoes of a dark past. Now a popular destination for visitors eager to understand its shadowed history, this island was once the staging post for untold destruction, anti-communist violence and the killing of thousands of people over time.

Throughout MYSTERIES OF THE ABANDONED, these structures, sites, villages, ruins and more are brought back to life with advanced CGI modeling to help tell the stories of these lost worlds and their haunted pasts.

This will be the first official mission launching astronauts to the ISS on board SpaceX’s reusable spacecraft and rocket – paving the way to commercial space travel. SPACE LAUNCH LIVE: CREW-1 LIFT OFF, a multiplatform event, will simulcast live on both coasts on Saturday, November 14, at 6 PM ET/ 3 PM PT on Discovery and Science Channel.

NASA’s SpaceX Crew-1 mission will launch astronauts Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker and Japan Aerospace Exploration astronaut Soichi Noguchi from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The astronauts will arrive at the ISS to join NASA astronaut Kate Rubins, as well as Expedition 64 commander Sergey Ryzhikov and flight engineer Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, both of the Russian space agency Roscosmos.

This latest multiplatform event marks the third live broadcast of historic space events for Discovery and Science Channel in partnership with The Washington Post and staff writer Christian Davenport, whose depth of experience allowed him to gain inside access to key players. Davenport is one of the country’s leading chroniclers of the space industry. His background and experience will add keen insight to the day’s event, as a co-host of the live broadcast. Davenport joined The Post in 2000 and was on a team that won a Peabody Award in 2010 for its work on veterans with traumatic brain injuries and has been on reporting teams that were finalists for the Pulitzer Prize three times. He is the author of two books, “The Space Barons: Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and the Quest to Colonize the Cosmos” (2018) and “As You Were: To War and Back with the Black Hawk Battalion of the Virginia National Guard” (2009). He has also served as a Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and a fellow at the Alicia Patterson Foundation.

The project, known as the South-To-North Water Diversion project, will provide water to millions of people and break boundaries as engineers attempt to accomplish the project relying on gravity alone. Also this season, in the southern Scottish countryside, a bizarre mega-machine capable of lifting large boats between two canals has appeared on the ancient landscape. Experts investigate the ground-breaking engineering behind this unique machine and how it made and how it made the route from the Scottish capital of Edinburgh to their largest city, Glasgow, navigable by boat.
