ID REVEALS THE NETWORK OF PEDOPHILES THAT CONNECTS TWO DERANGED SERIAL KILLERS IN A NEW PODCAST

ID REVEALS THE NETWORK OF PEDOPHILES THAT CONNECTS TWO DERANGED SERIAL KILLERS IN A NEW PODCAST AND SERIES THE CLOWN AND THE CANDYMAN

— Disturbing and Complex Story Begins with a Podcast Releasing Today, and Continues with Four-Part Special Airing on ID on January 18 and 19 —

(Silver Spring, Md.) – ID is readying an explosive exposé into a conspiracy of networks of men preying on children in the 1970s, a decade when pedophiles and child killers could hide in plain sight and tragically get away with murder. Connecting the murders of John Wayne Gacy in Chicago with the Houston Mass Murders by Dean Corll, THE CLOWN AND THE CANDYMAN traces a path through the past to expose how this dark web was able to exploit America’s youth, and the legacy of pain it left behind.

The 1970s saw a rise in serial killers unlike anything the United States had previously seen. Two of the killers operating during this time were John Wayne Gacy in Chicago and Dean Corll in Houston. Gacy often performed as a clown for hospitals and charity events and became known as “The Killer Clown,” while Corll, whose family owned a factory, often gave away candy to kids in the neighborhood which earned him the nickname “The Candyman.” Gacy and Corll were far more sinister than their outward facing personas, and their depraved actions resulted in the deaths of more than 60 young men and women and brought heartbreak to countless families, with some of their victims still unidentified to this day. The police believed the murders were the work of sole killers, but for the first time, the sordid secret revealing the network of pedophiles spanning the country is explored. This network included prominent members of American society with tentacles in some of our most trusted institutions.

In the eight-episode podcast THE CLOWN AND THE CANDYMAN, journalist and television producer Jacqueline Bynon investigates this pedophile network that exploited children across the U.S. It is a story of secrets, coverups, and conspiracies that extended to other high-profile cases at the time. The podcast features interviews from police who investigated these predators, the reporters who exposed them, and the families of victims still reeling from their loss. Bynon peels back the layers of the past to investigate and illuminate the networks that allowed these killers to thrive. Two episodes of THE CLOWN AND THE CANDYMAN drop today, and new episodes release weekly on Tuesdays. The podcast is available now on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. Listener discretion is advised.

Premiering next month, the four-part companion special THE CLOWN AND THE CANDYMAN takes viewers down the rabbit hole to a murky world of predators in the ‘70s. Centered around the evil of Gacy and Corll, the special offers a deep dive into their crimes, how they were discovered, and the race to identify their remaining nameless victims. The special also investigates their connections to John David Norman, the key operator of a nationwide pedophile ring, while never-before-heard tapes of Gacy offers viewers a glimpse into the disturbed man and his hideous actions. The documentary THE CLOWN AND THE CANDYMAN premieres on ID on Monday, January 18 and Tuesday, January 19 from 9-11pm, with the entire four-part special available to stream on discovery+ beginning January 18. Viewer discretion is advised.

THE CLOWN AND THE CANDYMAN is produced by Cineflix (Candyman) Inc. for Investigation Discovery. Jacqueline Bynon and Charles Tremayne are the executive producers and Kim Bondi serves as the producer for Cineflix. Tim Baney is the executive producer for ID.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CHILDREN? INVESTIGATION DISCOVERY EXAMINES THE CASE AGAINST LORI VALLOW IN “DOOMSDAY: THE MISSING CHILDREN”

– Three-Hour Event begins Sunday, December 20 at 9/8c –

-Available to stream on discovery+ beginning January 4-

(Silver Spring, Md.) – The world was captivated in the autumn of 2019, when the news first broke of the disappearance of 7-year-old JJ Vallow and his stepsister, 17-year-old Tylee Ryan, from their home in Rexburg, Idaho. As months passed, with no answers or clues to their whereabouts, police and family looked to their mother, 46-year-old Lori Vallow, for an explanation. Ten months later, in June 2020, a shocking discovery was made on the rural Idaho farm of Vallow’s husband, Chad Daybell, leaving their friends, family, law enforcement -and the world – to wonder, what happened to JJ and Tylee?

For the first time ever, America’s number one destination in true crime takes a deeper look into the events that led up to these disappearances through the eyes of the grandparents who desperately prayed for their return. DOOMSDAY: THE MISSING CHILDREN is a three-hour event premiering on Sunday, December 20 at 9/8c only on Investigation Discovery.

ID exclusively follows JJ and Tylee’s grandparents, Larry and Kay Woodcock on their journey to find the truth. As they travel the country, they gather information from local law enforcement, and concerned friends to create a timeline for the children’s legal guardian, Lori Vallow. What they uncover during their investigation is a story too strange to be real. Viewers will join the investigation examining allegations into Lori’s religious beliefs, including allegations that Vallow believed she was immortal, and her children had been replaced by zombies. According to friends and family, Vallow adhered to the belief that the destruction of mankind was imminent, which could potentially explain the bizarre behavior of Lori and her husband leading up to the discovery of the children. This three-hour event allows viewers to explore all of this evidence from the disappearance of the children to the dramatic arrest of Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell for concealment of evidence. With the trial of Vallow and Daybell on the horizon for 2021, perhaps the Woodcocks, will finally get the answers they so desperately need.

DOOMSDAY: THE MISSING CHILDREN is produced for Investigation Discovery by Category 6 Media(TM) group with Anne Garofalo Paterno, Tiff Winton and Sharon Scott as Executive Producers. For Investigation Discovery, Pamela Deutsch is Executive Producer, Sara Kozak is Senior Vice President of Production, Kevin Bennett is General Manager, and Henry Schleiff is Group President of Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America.

Since 2010, this unsolved mystery has become one of the most infamous cold cases in U.S. history, and the podcast takes a deep dive into new evidence and uncovers new revelations, rocking everything true crime aficionados thought they knew. Additional cases covered in UNRAVELED will be announced at a later date.

THE ID FILMS PREMIERE OF “THE WITMANS” EXPLORES THE HARSH REALITIES

THE ID FILMS PREMIERE OF “THE WITMANS” EXPLORES THE HARSH REALITIES OF THE UNITED STATES SENTENCING ITS CHILDREN TO LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE

– Investigation Discovery Exposes the Injustices of the Juvenile Criminal Justice System Through the Tragedy of One Single Family in the Documentary Premiere of “The Witmans” –

(Silver Spring, Md.) – In 1998, 13-year-old Greg Witman stepped off the school bus and 11 minutes later, Greg’s older brother Zach frantically called 911 to report that he had found Greg lying in a pool of blood. 15-year-old Zach went into shock – and then into custody as the police’s only lead. What followed Greg’s murder is a harrowing decades-long journey of one family trapped at the cruel intersection of small-town panic, a media frenzy, and a fractured criminal justice system.

The United States is the only country that allows juveniles to be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, which is exactly what happened in 2002 to Zach Witman, after he served nearly five years on house arrest before his trial and subsequent conviction. Now, after more than five years in the making, Investigation Discovery and Zero Point Zero Production in association with Docupation Films are proud to premiere THE WITMANS, a haunting documentary which serves as a harsh exploration of the intricacies and evolution of juvenile incarceration in America. Told intimately through the eyes of two parents on a 20-year odyssey to free their last surviving child, THE WITMANS premieres on Investigation Discovery on Tuesday, December 1 from 9-11pm ET/PT.

“THE WITMANS profiles an unimaginable tragedy for one family to endure. First, Ron and Sue Witman lost one son to a brutal murder, and then shortly after, the other to the system,” said Henry Schleiff, Group President Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America. “We are humbled that the Witmans decided to share their heartbreaking story with ID’s viewers, and we are hopeful that this documentary will provide a critical look at the fractured policies of youth incarceration in America.”

Despite a faulty investigation, only circumstantial evidence, and no motive for murder, Zach was tried as an adult and found guilty, sentenced to life in prison without parole. Despite newly uncovered evidence that might have exonerated him, after 21 years of appeals, reversals, and professions of innocence, Zach Witman took a plea bargain in 2018 and was finally released from prison in May 2019. His release was a direct result of landmark Supreme Court ruling that declared sentencing a child to a mandatory sentence of life without parole was unconstitutional. With expert insight from Bryan Stevenson, the civil rights lawyer who argued the case and founded the Equal Justice Initiative, this two-hour documentary explores impact of youth incarceration, taking into consideration issues of race and affluence, geography and history. Zach Witman is the canary in the coal mine for other children in America suffering under the justice system, proving how tragic it is for every child in this country, and THE WITMANS takes viewers on an intimate exploration of the limitations and principles of presumed innocence and a fair trial. The filmmaking team was granted extraordinary access by the family to their story, offering viewers an insight into the case never-before-revealed in the sensational press that followed the case for 20 years.

Directed by Academy-award nominee David Petersen, THE WITMANS is produced for Investigation Discovery by Zero Point Zero Production Inc with Lydia Tenaglia, Christopher Collins, and Craig H. Shepherd serving as executive producers. Shannon Sun-Higginson, Nikolas Diener, Gregory Timmons, and Leslie Drinkwater also executive produce. For ID, Sara Kozak is Executive Producer and Senior Vice President of Production, Kevin Bennett is General Manager, and Henry Schleiff is Group President of Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America.

UNTANGLING A WEB OF DECEPTION IN A DECADES-OLD DISAPPEARANCE, ID EXPLORES WHO KILLED THE LYON SISTERS?

UNTANGLING A WEB OF DECEPTION IN A DECADES-OLD DISAPPEARANCE, ID EXPLORES WHO KILLED THE LYON SISTERS?

–Two-hour special detailing the cold-case investigation premieres Saturday, November 28 at 9/8c–

(Silver Spring, Md.) – On March 25, 1975, 12-year-old Sheila Lyon and her little sister, 10-year old Katherine, walked half a mile from their home to a shopping mall in Wheaton, Maryland…and were never seen again. When news of their disappearance broke, a community was rocked to its core. Residents wondered if someone within their community was responsible, and parents who once felt safe letting their children walk alone now never let them out of their sight. Local law enforcement exhausted all resources in the extensive search for the missing girls, but the investigation into Sheila and Katherine’s disappearance was plagued by false leads and questionable suspects. Despite all of law enforcement’s efforts, the case eventually went cold. Almost four decades later, a new team of determined cold-case investigators uncovered a promising lead, and from there, the twisted story of a witness turned prime suspect begins to unravel. With reporting from bestselling author Mark Bowden (Black Hawk Down, The Last Stone) and insight from the cold-case squad who worked relentlessly to solve the mystery, Investigation Discovery follows the reinvestigation into this decades-old disappearance with WHO KILLED THE LYON SISTERS?, premiering Saturday, November 28 at 9/8c, only on ID.

“The tragic disappearance of these two young women is every parent’s worst nightmare, and completely shifted the dynamics of parenting back in 1975,” said Henry Schleiff, Group President of Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America. “This special follows the important work of the dedicated cold case investigators, because without them, we would never have discovered the truth about what really happened to these children.”

The disappearance of the Lyon sisters was a well-known case in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, in part from the reporting of Mark Bowden who followed the case from the beginning. Its status as a cold case bothered detectives over the years, especially Chris Homrock. In 2013, with the 40th anniversary of the disappearance looming, Homrock decided to take one last look at the files when he came across a potential lead – a statement from a man named Lloyd Welch who claimed to have witnessed the girls’ abduction. This set Homrock and his fellow detectives Dave Davis, Katie Leggett and Mark Janney, on a grueling journey investigating Welch. Over the course of four years, detectives collect hours of audio and video recordings from their questioning of Welch and Welch’s extended family in hopes of getting a break in the case. They work to decipher tiny bits of truth from a forest of deception, uncovering a convoluted family dynamic shrouded in secrets, deception, and alleged crimes. Their search for the Lyon sisters spans across states, leading detectives to a remote mountainside in Virginia where members of Welch’s family have lived for years. Never-before-seen footage from 10 different interrogation sessions with Welch, interviews with Welch family members who became subjects of the investigation, and a recorded confession unfold over the course of two hours, finally bringing this 40-year-old mystery to a close.

WHO KILLED THE LYON SISTERS? is produced for ID by Inkblot Narratives and Wild Eyes Productions. For Inkblot Narratives, Aaron Bowden and Erik Becker are Executive Producers. For Wild Eyes Productions, David Keane and Conor Morris are Executive Producers. For Investigation Discovery, Diana Sperrazza is Executive Producer, Sara Kozak is Senior Vice President of Production, Kevin Bennett is General Manager, and Henry Schleiff is Group President of Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America.

A KILLER IS CONVICTED, BUT IS THE TRUE CULPRIT ON THE LOOSE? ID EXPLORES CASES UNDER DISPUTE

A KILLER IS CONVICTED, BUT IS THE TRUE CULPRIT ON THE LOOSE? ID EXPLORES CASES UNDER DISPUTE IN THE NEW SERIES KILLER IN QUESTION

The four-episode limited series premieres November 1st at 9/8ct on Investigation Discovery

(New York, NY) – When a murder is committed, it sends shockwaves through a community. But what happens when a case is closed, yet lingering questions remain? When doubt circulates throughout a city, and investigations are put under a microscope, people begin to ask: is the convicted truly the killer, or is someone evading the law while an innocent person sits taxed with their crimes? Join the hunt for answers as ID delves into four stories of adjudicated cases, where the verdict remains under dispute. Walk step-by-step through critical crime scenes, key questioning and newfound evidence, with each episode telling both sides of a story. The conclusion is up for interpretation, and the viewer is left to decide: was justice served, or does the evidence just not add up? KILLER IN QUESTION premieres on Sunday, November 1st at 9/8ct, only on Investigation Discovery.

“With this series, we chose to take a risk and look at four highly contested cases under intense scrutiny within their communities,” says Henry Schleiff, Group President of Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America. “We did this with the hope of shedding light on these cases – creating national attention, presenting the facts, yet leaving the ultimate determination up to the people watching at home.”

Stories for KILLER IN QUESTION include:

“The Hunted.” – premieres November 1st at 9/8ct

In 1990, hunters Doug Estes and Jim Bennett are found shot to death in a state gaming area. Police suspect Jeff Titus, the man who owned the property just next door, but he is cleared by alibi witnesses. A reinvestigation by a cold case team nearly a decade later leads detectives back to Titus, and he is convicted of the murders. Titus maintains his innocence to this day, and with both the original investigators and the cold case team criticizing each other, the community does not know what to think. Upon further investigation, it is discovered that a serial killer was on the loose around the time of the murders. But is that one connection enough to prove that Titus is an innocent man?

“The Girl in the Lake” – premieres November 8th at 9/8ct

On the night of May 1, 1987, 11-year-old Teresa McAbee heads off down the road to a convenience store near her home in Mascotte, Florida. The next morning, a fisherman finds her body face down in the lake across the street. Before he even leaves the scene, the lead Sheriff’s investigator is convinced he has a suspect, a local rookie cop named James Duckett. The Mascotte Police Chief maintains Duckett’s innocence, but over the next couple months the investigator’s clues fall in place and Duckett is sentenced to death. But fifteen years later, a retired homicide detective contacts Duckett on death row. He uncovers a trail of questionable evidence and disputed facts. Slowly he becomes convinced that this man is innocent.

“The Man with the Rabbit’s Foot” – premieres November 15th at 9/8ct

In 1997, three bodies are found in the walk-in refrigerator of a gas station in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Two years later, Thomas Cisco, an acquaintance of one of the victims, confesses to the murders. But family members of the victims are not at peace with Cisco’s confession, as mistrust of their Parish’s law enforcement runs deep – especially when it comes to the longtime Sheriff, whose son resembles a composite sketch released to the public. Cisco also proves to be unreliable in his accounts and over several years, he gives investigators approximately 20 different statements about what happened the night of the murders. Though Cisco is sentenced to 90 years in prison for the murders, many including the victims’ families still believe he has an accomplice who roams free. They are convinced there’s more to the story of contested events that they feel, until today, has not been told.

“The Bingo Queen” – premieres November 22nd at 9/8ct

On an early morning in March 1997, Angie Nihoff stops by to check on her grandma, Olga Parlante, known to all her friends as The Bingo Queen. Angie is horrified to find that Olga has been brutally beaten and isn’t moving. On a call to 911, a frantic Angie can’t stop screaming, but some closest to Angie wonder if it is all an act. By the time detectives arrive on the scene, Olga has been pronounced dead. As detectives untangle a web of clues, they never find any concrete evidence tying Angie to the murder. Fifteen years later, detectives feed unidentified palm prints from the crime scene into a new advanced computer database. The prints match Bennie Hall, a burglar who is already in prison. Using this new evidence, Hall is convicted of Olga Parlante’s murder and is sentenced to life in prison two decades after Olga’s death. But to this day some detectives still believe there may be a second murderer, who has never been caught.

KILLER IN QUESTION is produced for Investigation Discovery by Red Marble Media. At Red Marble Media, Kevin Fitzpatrick, Jacinda Davis and Stephen Dost are executive producers. For Investigation Discovery Lorna Thomas is executive producer, Sara Kozak is senior vice president of production, Kevin Bennett is general manager and Henry Schleiff is Group President of Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel, and Destination America.
