THE ID FILMS PREMIERE OF “THE WITMANS” EXPLORES THE HARSH REALITIES

THE ID FILMS PREMIERE OF “THE WITMANS” EXPLORES THE HARSH REALITIES OF THE UNITED STATES SENTENCING ITS CHILDREN TO LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE

– Investigation Discovery Exposes the Injustices of the Juvenile Criminal Justice System Through the Tragedy of One Single Family in the Documentary Premiere of “The Witmans” –

(Silver Spring, Md.) – In 1998, 13-year-old Greg Witman stepped off the school bus and 11 minutes later, Greg’s older brother Zach frantically called 911 to report that he had found Greg lying in a pool of blood. 15-year-old Zach went into shock – and then into custody as the police’s only lead. What followed Greg’s murder is a harrowing decades-long journey of one family trapped at the cruel intersection of small-town panic, a media frenzy, and a fractured criminal justice system.

The United States is the only country that allows juveniles to be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, which is exactly what happened in 2002 to Zach Witman, after he served nearly five years on house arrest before his trial and subsequent conviction. Now, after more than five years in the making, Investigation Discovery and Zero Point Zero Production in association with Docupation Films are proud to premiere THE WITMANS, a haunting documentary which serves as a harsh exploration of the intricacies and evolution of juvenile incarceration in America. Told intimately through the eyes of two parents on a 20-year odyssey to free their last surviving child, THE WITMANS premieres on Investigation Discovery on Tuesday, December 1 from 9-11pm ET/PT.

“THE WITMANS profiles an unimaginable tragedy for one family to endure. First, Ron and Sue Witman lost one son to a brutal murder, and then shortly after, the other to the system,” said Henry Schleiff, Group President Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America. “We are humbled that the Witmans decided to share their heartbreaking story with ID’s viewers, and we are hopeful that this documentary will provide a critical look at the fractured policies of youth incarceration in America.”

Despite a faulty investigation, only circumstantial evidence, and no motive for murder, Zach was tried as an adult and found guilty, sentenced to life in prison without parole. Despite newly uncovered evidence that might have exonerated him, after 21 years of appeals, reversals, and professions of innocence, Zach Witman took a plea bargain in 2018 and was finally released from prison in May 2019. His release was a direct result of landmark Supreme Court ruling that declared sentencing a child to a mandatory sentence of life without parole was unconstitutional. With expert insight from Bryan Stevenson, the civil rights lawyer who argued the case and founded the Equal Justice Initiative, this two-hour documentary explores impact of youth incarceration, taking into consideration issues of race and affluence, geography and history. Zach Witman is the canary in the coal mine for other children in America suffering under the justice system, proving how tragic it is for every child in this country, and THE WITMANS takes viewers on an intimate exploration of the limitations and principles of presumed innocence and a fair trial. The filmmaking team was granted extraordinary access by the family to their story, offering viewers an insight into the case never-before-revealed in the sensational press that followed the case for 20 years.

Directed by Academy-award nominee David Petersen, THE WITMANS is produced for Investigation Discovery by Zero Point Zero Production Inc with Lydia Tenaglia, Christopher Collins, and Craig H. Shepherd serving as executive producers. Shannon Sun-Higginson, Nikolas Diener, Gregory Timmons, and Leslie Drinkwater also executive produce. For ID, Sara Kozak is Executive Producer and Senior Vice President of Production, Kevin Bennett is General Manager, and Henry Schleiff is Group President of Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America.

UNTANGLING A WEB OF DECEPTION IN A DECADES-OLD DISAPPEARANCE, ID EXPLORES WHO KILLED THE LYON SISTERS?

UNTANGLING A WEB OF DECEPTION IN A DECADES-OLD DISAPPEARANCE, ID EXPLORES WHO KILLED THE LYON SISTERS?

–Two-hour special detailing the cold-case investigation premieres Saturday, November 28 at 9/8c–

(Silver Spring, Md.) – On March 25, 1975, 12-year-old Sheila Lyon and her little sister, 10-year old Katherine, walked half a mile from their home to a shopping mall in Wheaton, Maryland…and were never seen again. When news of their disappearance broke, a community was rocked to its core. Residents wondered if someone within their community was responsible, and parents who once felt safe letting their children walk alone now never let them out of their sight. Local law enforcement exhausted all resources in the extensive search for the missing girls, but the investigation into Sheila and Katherine’s disappearance was plagued by false leads and questionable suspects. Despite all of law enforcement’s efforts, the case eventually went cold. Almost four decades later, a new team of determined cold-case investigators uncovered a promising lead, and from there, the twisted story of a witness turned prime suspect begins to unravel. With reporting from bestselling author Mark Bowden (Black Hawk Down, The Last Stone) and insight from the cold-case squad who worked relentlessly to solve the mystery, Investigation Discovery follows the reinvestigation into this decades-old disappearance with WHO KILLED THE LYON SISTERS?, premiering Saturday, November 28 at 9/8c, only on ID.

“The tragic disappearance of these two young women is every parent’s worst nightmare, and completely shifted the dynamics of parenting back in 1975,” said Henry Schleiff, Group President of Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America. “This special follows the important work of the dedicated cold case investigators, because without them, we would never have discovered the truth about what really happened to these children.”

The disappearance of the Lyon sisters was a well-known case in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, in part from the reporting of Mark Bowden who followed the case from the beginning. Its status as a cold case bothered detectives over the years, especially Chris Homrock. In 2013, with the 40th anniversary of the disappearance looming, Homrock decided to take one last look at the files when he came across a potential lead – a statement from a man named Lloyd Welch who claimed to have witnessed the girls’ abduction. This set Homrock and his fellow detectives Dave Davis, Katie Leggett and Mark Janney, on a grueling journey investigating Welch. Over the course of four years, detectives collect hours of audio and video recordings from their questioning of Welch and Welch’s extended family in hopes of getting a break in the case. They work to decipher tiny bits of truth from a forest of deception, uncovering a convoluted family dynamic shrouded in secrets, deception, and alleged crimes. Their search for the Lyon sisters spans across states, leading detectives to a remote mountainside in Virginia where members of Welch’s family have lived for years. Never-before-seen footage from 10 different interrogation sessions with Welch, interviews with Welch family members who became subjects of the investigation, and a recorded confession unfold over the course of two hours, finally bringing this 40-year-old mystery to a close.

WHO KILLED THE LYON SISTERS? is produced for ID by Inkblot Narratives and Wild Eyes Productions. For Inkblot Narratives, Aaron Bowden and Erik Becker are Executive Producers. For Wild Eyes Productions, David Keane and Conor Morris are Executive Producers. For Investigation Discovery, Diana Sperrazza is Executive Producer, Sara Kozak is Senior Vice President of Production, Kevin Bennett is General Manager, and Henry Schleiff is Group President of Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America.

A KILLER IS CONVICTED, BUT IS THE TRUE CULPRIT ON THE LOOSE? ID EXPLORES CASES UNDER DISPUTE

A KILLER IS CONVICTED, BUT IS THE TRUE CULPRIT ON THE LOOSE? ID EXPLORES CASES UNDER DISPUTE IN THE NEW SERIES KILLER IN QUESTION

The four-episode limited series premieres November 1st at 9/8ct on Investigation Discovery

(New York, NY) – When a murder is committed, it sends shockwaves through a community. But what happens when a case is closed, yet lingering questions remain? When doubt circulates throughout a city, and investigations are put under a microscope, people begin to ask: is the convicted truly the killer, or is someone evading the law while an innocent person sits taxed with their crimes? Join the hunt for answers as ID delves into four stories of adjudicated cases, where the verdict remains under dispute. Walk step-by-step through critical crime scenes, key questioning and newfound evidence, with each episode telling both sides of a story. The conclusion is up for interpretation, and the viewer is left to decide: was justice served, or does the evidence just not add up? KILLER IN QUESTION premieres on Sunday, November 1st at 9/8ct, only on Investigation Discovery.

“With this series, we chose to take a risk and look at four highly contested cases under intense scrutiny within their communities,” says Henry Schleiff, Group President of Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America. “We did this with the hope of shedding light on these cases – creating national attention, presenting the facts, yet leaving the ultimate determination up to the people watching at home.”

Stories for KILLER IN QUESTION include:

“The Hunted.” – premieres November 1st at 9/8ct

In 1990, hunters Doug Estes and Jim Bennett are found shot to death in a state gaming area. Police suspect Jeff Titus, the man who owned the property just next door, but he is cleared by alibi witnesses. A reinvestigation by a cold case team nearly a decade later leads detectives back to Titus, and he is convicted of the murders. Titus maintains his innocence to this day, and with both the original investigators and the cold case team criticizing each other, the community does not know what to think. Upon further investigation, it is discovered that a serial killer was on the loose around the time of the murders. But is that one connection enough to prove that Titus is an innocent man?

“The Girl in the Lake” – premieres November 8th at 9/8ct

On the night of May 1, 1987, 11-year-old Teresa McAbee heads off down the road to a convenience store near her home in Mascotte, Florida. The next morning, a fisherman finds her body face down in the lake across the street. Before he even leaves the scene, the lead Sheriff’s investigator is convinced he has a suspect, a local rookie cop named James Duckett. The Mascotte Police Chief maintains Duckett’s innocence, but over the next couple months the investigator’s clues fall in place and Duckett is sentenced to death. But fifteen years later, a retired homicide detective contacts Duckett on death row. He uncovers a trail of questionable evidence and disputed facts. Slowly he becomes convinced that this man is innocent.

“The Man with the Rabbit’s Foot” – premieres November 15th at 9/8ct

In 1997, three bodies are found in the walk-in refrigerator of a gas station in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Two years later, Thomas Cisco, an acquaintance of one of the victims, confesses to the murders. But family members of the victims are not at peace with Cisco’s confession, as mistrust of their Parish’s law enforcement runs deep – especially when it comes to the longtime Sheriff, whose son resembles a composite sketch released to the public. Cisco also proves to be unreliable in his accounts and over several years, he gives investigators approximately 20 different statements about what happened the night of the murders. Though Cisco is sentenced to 90 years in prison for the murders, many including the victims’ families still believe he has an accomplice who roams free. They are convinced there’s more to the story of contested events that they feel, until today, has not been told.

“The Bingo Queen” – premieres November 22nd at 9/8ct

On an early morning in March 1997, Angie Nihoff stops by to check on her grandma, Olga Parlante, known to all her friends as The Bingo Queen. Angie is horrified to find that Olga has been brutally beaten and isn’t moving. On a call to 911, a frantic Angie can’t stop screaming, but some closest to Angie wonder if it is all an act. By the time detectives arrive on the scene, Olga has been pronounced dead. As detectives untangle a web of clues, they never find any concrete evidence tying Angie to the murder. Fifteen years later, detectives feed unidentified palm prints from the crime scene into a new advanced computer database. The prints match Bennie Hall, a burglar who is already in prison. Using this new evidence, Hall is convicted of Olga Parlante’s murder and is sentenced to life in prison two decades after Olga’s death. But to this day some detectives still believe there may be a second murderer, who has never been caught.

KILLER IN QUESTION is produced for Investigation Discovery by Red Marble Media. At Red Marble Media, Kevin Fitzpatrick, Jacinda Davis and Stephen Dost are executive producers. For Investigation Discovery Lorna Thomas is executive producer, Sara Kozak is senior vice president of production, Kevin Bennett is general manager and Henry Schleiff is Group President of Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel, and Destination America.

Brought to you by 44 Blue Productions, a Red Arrow Studios company, this series began with sinister siblings who devolved to killers and has transformed into chilling accounts of intertwined family webs, with salacious sisterhood still at the core of every episode. From a quiet town near the Smoky Mountains, to the sunny skies of St. Petersburg, FL, stories in this season span the nation, and across multiple different family dynamics. It’s not always the sister who is the culprit of the crime, but sometimes the accomplice, victim, whistle-blower or unintended spy. Each episode is shrouded in mystery, heartbreak and hidden emotions, proving that where there are family ties, there are also family lies. Season three of TWISTED SISTERS premieres on Monday, October 26th at 9/8ct, only on Investigation Discovery.

“Our viewers love intricate and complicated stories of interpersonal relationships, and that’s exactly why this show has been a hit from the start,” says Henry Schleiff, Group President of Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America. “We are proud to partner with Khloé and bring a third season to our network, filled with emotional stories of family and sisterhood, brought to you by one of America’s most famous sisters.”

“Everyone knows I love true-crime, and this season we took TWISTED SISTERS to a whole new level with some exclusive interviews and never-before-seen footage and access,” says Khloé Kardashian, executive producer of the series.

Stephanie Noonan Drachkovitch of 44 Blue Productions adds: “Each episode pulls back the curtain and really humanizes the families and victims, and I think that connection is what makes this season so emotional, captivating and important.”

Upcoming episodes for this season of TWISTED SISTERS include:

“A Song for Sarra” – premieres October 26th at 9/8ct
The four Gilbert sisters struggle through a tough childhood made worse when it’s suspected that Shannan, the oldest sister, has become a victim of the Long Island Serial Killer. Her mother and sisters embark on a fight for justice for the slain Shannan as Sarra begins a tragic decline into schizophrenia. When Shannan’s body is finally found, Sarra’s delusions worsen, leaving the question: will both sisters be lost?

“Her own Medicine”- premieres November 2nd at 9/8ct
Georgia and Jeannie Plummer are two of ten siblings. They remain close until Georgia absconds with much of their inheritance from their mother, Birdie. The sisters don’t speak for three years until Georgia once again reaches out to Jeannie for help. Being a good sister, Jeannie can’t resist. But soon, Jeannie falls sick, and questions begin to arise.

“Smoky Mountain Murder” – premieres November 9th at 9/8ct
Denice and Aaron Smith appear to be the perfect, loving couple until Denice’s infidelity crumbles the marriage. The divorce proceedings are bitter, and Aaron is awarded custody of the children. Not long after, Aaron is found dead in what appears to be a robbery gone wrong. The kids are missing, as is Denice. After a massive manhunt, investigators find the kids safe and sound, with Denice. But there is more to the story than meets the eye.

“The Good Sister” – premieres November 16th at 9/8ct
A serious childhood illness limits the mental development of Debbie Burns, requiring her older sister Barbara to care for her. For nearly forty years, the sisters live a modest, peaceful life together in St. Petersburg, Florida. But a substantial inheritance disturbs the calm in the Burns home, pitting one sister against the other until, finally, one of them snaps.

“The Old River Road” – premieres November 23rd at 9/8ct
Sisters Janice and Betty move from Hope, IN to Seadrift, TX looking for a clean start. But trouble follows them to the Texas coast as Janice’s marriage soon falls apart. However, the plan has a fatal flaw, as they leave their victim lying by the side of the road, leading to an intense cover-up and cataclysmic chase the sisters never saw coming.

ID SHEDS NEW LIGHT ON THE O.J. SIMPSON CASE IN O.J. & NICOLE: AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY

COMMEMORATING THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE VERDICT IN THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURY,
ID SHEDS NEW LIGHT ON THE O.J. SIMPSON CASE IN O.J. & NICOLE: AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY

The story you think you know, told in a way you’d never expect, premieres on October 5th at 10/9ct

(New York, NY) – Hundreds of hours of documentaries, films and TV shows have covered what came to be known as “The Trial of the Century.” The world watched the debates in the court room, heard the details of the evidence, and saw the brutality of the crime scene. But throughout this media circus, one important voice was lost in the press maelstrom: the story of Nicole Brown Simpson. Surrounding the 25th anniversary of the verdict that rocked the nation, ID will rewrite this infamous story with a new perspective. We will hear firsthand accounts from Nicole’s closest family and friends as they reveal her most intimate thoughts from her own diary, proving that this crime is not about the man who walked away unscathed, but about the woman who did not have that option. O.J. & NICOLE: AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY premieres on Monday, October 5th at 10/9ct, only on Investigation Discovery.

“At ID we see the 25th anniversary of the acquittal as the opportunity to bring forward the most important voices of the story, the ones you haven’t heard before, the voices of the friends and family of Nicole Brown,” says Henry Schleiff, Group President of Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America. “This documentary is not here to retell the famous trial but to remember the woman who struggled with domestic violence and now tells her side of the story, in her words, for the first time, ever.”

This two-hour documentary film tells the story of Nicole in greater depth than ever before. Viewers will hear from Nicole’s youngest sister Tanya Brown, her best friend Robin Greer, close family friend Ron Shipp, as well as David Gascon, Bill Heider, John Edwards and other officers, law enforcement and legal counsel who took part in America’s most infamous investigation. Intimate archival footage sews together Nicole’s journey to LA, her fateful encounter with O.J. Simpson, their whirlwind romance and later the terrifying phone calls and diaries she kept weeks before her death. Sharing never-before-seen journals and family home videos, this documentary humanizes the woman who for so long was treated first as the accessory to a famous man and then as an accessory at his trial. Using emotional, exclusive interviews with those closest to the case, this documentary reflects on the events that led up to the tragic murders in Brentwood in 1994, showing that although the trial is over, the true impact of the case will never be forgotten.

Corrinna’s heart-breaking story will air as the season two finale of IMPACT OF MURDER, with the episode “There’s No Winning In Murder” premiering on Thursday, October 1 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Investigation Discovery, the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. In West Haven, Conn., mother of four Corrinna Martin learns that her daughter Alyssiah is missing. After an exhaustive, state-wide search, a discovery confirms Corrinna’s worst fear, and a murder investigation is opened. As a pattern of abuse against Alyssiah is uncovered, Corrinna vows to help other victims of domestic violence. When a suspect is identified, it looks like the family may finally find justice. However, the lack of physical evidence results in two successive hung juries. Everything rests on the outcome of a third trial. Just weeks before the third trial is set to start, an unbelievable tragedy devastates the family yet again. It becomes more important than ever for one mother to see justice served and to keep the memory of her loved ones alive.

“Losing a child absolutely liquifies you, mothers are not made to bury their babies, let alone grandbabies,” said Corrinna Martin. “Working through the heartbreak of my own family’s tragedies, I now find strength and purpose in my girls’ memories and am actively committed to making a difference in the lives of victims and survivors of domestic violence. I am dedicated to empowering, educating, and engaging with the Black and brown community to help lift the stigma of domestic violence.”

Corrinna Martin has launched her nonprofit, MOVE INC. Mothers of Victim Equality is a nonprofit organization that provides education and advocacy as a proactive approach to ending domestic violence. Since 2013, we have strived to educate, empower and engage individuals, families and communities in the elimination of domestic violence by promoting justice for victims and their families. Through social change, we seek to end all forms of domestic violence.

TV SPECIAL ON BOTHAM JEAN’S MURDER SET TO AIR ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10

TV SPECIAL ON BOTHAM JEAN’S MURDER SET TO AIR ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 AS THE PREMIERE OF INVESTIGATION DISCOVERY’S “IMPACT OF MURDER”

–Emotional episode comes amid continued unrest over police killings of African Americans and two years after Jean’s slaying–

(Silver Spring, MD) – Season two of IMPACT OF MURDER kicks off with a heart wrenching two-hour episode on Botham Jean with “The Ballad of Botham Jean,” airing on Thursday, September 10 from 9-11 p.m. EDT/PDT on Investigation Discovery. Jean was shot in 2018 inside his Dallas apartment by white, female, off-duty police officer Amy Guyger. Guyger claimed she shot Botham because she thought she had entered her own home, and he was a trespassing burglar. Like many controversial police killings of minorities, Botham’s murder sparked national outrage.

Botham Jean was a promising young Black accountant who dreamed of returning to his native St. Lucia to become Prime Minister. As a family mourned, the murder ignited protests from Black Lives Matter activists and sparked a media frenzy. This senseless tragedy is retold by those closest to the case with gripping, emotional accounts from Jean’s family, including his mother, Allison Jean; father Bertrum Jean; sister, Allisa Charles-Findley; as well as those who worked with the family to bring justice to Botham, including lawyer Lee Merritt and prosecutor Jason Hermus. Perhaps the most heartrending account comes from 18-year-old Brandt Jean, who mourns Botham’s death while wrestling with his anger against his brother’s killer. His request for a courtroom embrace of his brother’s murderer, Guyger, displayed an astonishing act of forgiveness and inflamed worldwide, polarizing reactions.

“I have to admit it was tough to relive my son’s horrible murder,” said Allison Jean. “However, this is an important story. I want people to know how good my son was, and how senseless his death was.”

Additional episodes in season two of IMPACT OF MURDER on ID include: a fatal chance encounter in STOLEN DREAMS which premieres Thursday, September 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT; a wrongful conviction in THE BETRAYAL premiering Thursday, September 24 at 9 p.m. ET/PT; and the finale exploring a case exploring the devastating cycle of domestic violence in THERE’S NO WINNING IN MURDER debuting on Thursday, October 1 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

IMPACT OF MURDER is produced for Investigation Discovery by October Films. For October, Gillian Pachter is executive producer and showrunner, and Erin Cramer is series director. For Investigation Discovery, Meredith Russell is a coordinating producer, Pamela Deutsch is executive producer, Sara Kozak is senior vice president of production, Kevin Bennett is general manager, and Henry Schleiff is Group President, Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel, and Destination America.

Prior to each book’s release, ID will air a stack of programming filled with strange but true stories that inspired each book’s content. The first release on Tuesday, September 15, “Murder Thy Neighbor” profiles two twisted tales inspired by true-crime horrors: the first following a neighbors’ quarrel that turns violent and the second, cyber-bullying that explodes in a double murder. Roy Kirk moved in next door with plans to renovate, but as the weeks go by, his DIY construction turns to shambles. When Ann takes him to court, Kirk’s retaliation will be shocking. Written in conjunction with Andrew Bourelle.

In the second story, “Murder IRL,” Jenelle Potter has always been better at connecting with people through social media. With overprotective parents, she hasn’t had very many options to meet people, until she links up with Billy. But her feelings for Billy are unreciprocated, causing Jenelle to start a virtual war that tragically enters the real one. Written in conjunction with Max DiLallo
