IFC FILMS AND BANKSIDE FILMS ANNOUNCE ‘FLUX GOURMET’ HAS WRAPPED PRODUCTION

IFC FILMS AND BANKSIDE FILMS ANNOUNCE PETER STRICKLAND’S LATEST AUTEURIST FEAST ‘FLUX GOURMET’ HAS WRAPPED PRODUCTION, LANDING WITH IFC FILMS FOR NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS
STARRING ASA BUTTERFIELD AND GWENDOLINE CHRISTIE

NEW YORK, NEW YORK (July 8, 2021) – IFC Films, Bankside Films, and Head Gear/Metrol Technology have wrapped production on Peter Strickland’s latest film, FLUX GOURMET. The film will be released with IFC Films across North America, who have previously collaborated with Strickland on his explosive English-language debut BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO (2012) and follow-up feature THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY (2014), which both earned critical acclaim upon release and have subsequently garnered a fiercely loyal cult following leading up to his most recent film IN FABRIC (2018).

FLUX GOURMET stars Asa Butterfield (Sex Education, Hugo), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones, In Fabric), Ariane Labed (Alps, Attenberg), Fatma Mohamed (Berberian Sound Studio, The Duke of Burgundy, In Fabric), and Makis Papadimitriou (Chevalier). Leo Bill and Richard Bremmer co-star. This marks Strickland’s fifth film, and third with IFC Films, who plan to release the film in 2022.

FLUX GOURMET was produced by Serena Armitage of Red Breast Productions and Pietro Greppi of Lunapark Pictures, and co-financed by IFC Films, Bankside Films, and Head Gear Films/Metrol Technology. Serving as executive producers are Arianna Bocco and Betsy Rodgers of IFC Films, Stephen Kelliher & Sophie Green of Bankside Films, Phil Hunt & Compton Ross of Head Gear Films/Metrol Technology, Ian Benson of Blue Bear. Bankside Films will handle international sales.

SYNOPSIS: At an institute devoted to culinary and alimentary performance, a collective finds themselves embroiled in power struggles, artistic vendettas and gastrointestinal disorders.

Director Peter Strickland said, “FLUX GOURMET came about through a personal frustration with how alimentary disorders or food allergies have been comically portrayed in some films, and without wanting to embark on a finger-wagging mission, I wanted to write something devoted to the disruptions of the stomach whilst attempting to maintain a degree of dignity to deeply private and embarrassing symptoms.”

IFC Films President Arianna Bocco added, “Peter Strickland’s films are unmistakable in their visual style and brilliant narratives and he consistently confronts audiences in a way that challenges and rewards each time. We are thrilled to continue to work with such a singular talent as Peter, and to partner with Bankside Films and the incredible filmmaking team who worked so hard to get this film off the ground.”

Stephen Kelliher and Sophie Green of Bankside Films added, “Following IN FABRIC, we are thrilled to be continuing our relationship with Peter Strickland, one the most original and commanding voices in cinema today. We couldn’t be happier to partner with IFC Films on this film from its very inception and to be working with them as financiers and executive producers on the project.”

The film is produced by Joaquin Acrich and co-produced by Katie Schiller and Kieran Altmann (Shiva Baby), and executive produced by Spencer Barkoff, Jerry Ferrara, Tracy Kopulsky, Matthew Lev, Mason Novick, Francesca Reale, Craig Swidler, Sam Weinstein and Jaboukie Young-White.

Once upon a time in New York City, single millennials Milo (Jaboukie Young-White) and Wendy (Francesca Reale) are thrown together by a dating app at what might be the worst, most complicated time for romance in their lives. After the requisite ghosting following a one-night stand, the magic of New York pulls them back together, and the jaded pair draws up a friends with benefits contract to avoid the pitfalls of a relationship. With one foot in the single life, their intentions and inner dating demons are tested as they run into exes, exchange profound text messages, and contend with a seemingly perfect new relationship between their best friends. For Wendy and Milo, their fate is decided when one of them catches real feelings, and the two must figure out how to remain friends, knowing they love one another, or decide to never text each other again.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “Jonah’s take on dating in the app age is both incredibly funny and refreshingly optimistic, with shades of Nora Ephron and classic romantic comedies. It’s also an amazing showcase for so many young comedians, especially Jaboukie Young-White, and a perfect New York City film to launch at the Tribeca Film Festival. We’re so pleased to be partnering with Jonah for his debut feature.”

Director Jonah Feingold added, “Those wishing stars in storybooks I grew up reading might actually work… It’s a dream come true to partner with IFC. They immediately blew us away with their vision and sincere passion towards our fairy-tale feel-good romantic comedy about modern romance in a time when it couldn’t be more complicated. Our cast and crew had a blast making this film, and we’re so excited to be in the IFC family.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films’ Director of Acquisitions Aijah Keith and Acquisitions Coordinator Adam Koehler with UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers.

IFC FILMS NABS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO PAUL VERHOEVEN’S CANNES COMPETITION FILM “BENEDETTA”

IFC FILMS NABS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO PAUL VERHOEVEN’S CANNES COMPETITION FILM “BENEDETTA” AHEAD OF WORLD PREMIERE
NEW YORK, NY (May 27, 2021) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to the erotic thriller Benedetta, directed by Paul Verhoeven. Verhoeven’s first directorial effort since his 2016 film Elle, Benedetta entangles sexuality, religion, and human ambition in its story of a young novitiate in 17th century Italy who begins an affair with another nun. IFC Films plans to release the film this year.

Written by Verhoeven and David Birke (Elle), the film is inspired by historian Judith C. Brown’s non-fiction book Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy and is produced by Said Ben Said for SBS Production, Michel Merkt, and Pathé. The film stars Virginie Efira alongside Daphne Patakia, Lambert Wilson, Olivier Rabourdin, Clotilde Courau, Hervé Pierre, and Charlotte Rampling (45 Years).

In the late 17th century, with plague ravaging the land, Benedetta Carlini (Virginie Efira) joins the convent in Pescia, Tuscany, as a novice. Tormented by religious and erotic visions and capable from an early age of performing miracles, Benedetta’s impact on life in the community is immediate and momentous.

Originally slated to make its world premiere at the cancelled 2020 Cannes Film Festival, Benedetta will now arrive on the Croisette this July, where it will compete for the Palme d’Or. This will mark Verhoeven’s third Cannes bow, following Elle in 2016 and Basic Instinct, which opened the festival in 1992.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “Benedetta walks the line between the sacred and the profane, and in the hands of visionary filmmaker Paul Verhoeven, it’s a provocative thriller that will entice audiences everywhere. We couldn’t be more excited to be working with Verhoeven, Said Ben Said, Pathé, and the stellar production team to launch the film in North America this year.”

Producers Pathé and SBS added, “We are thrilled to partner with the very talented team at IFC on this exceptional Verhoeven film. We feel it really is the right home for the film in the US and the long expertise of the IFC team is a great asset to optimize the launch and visibility of Benedetta.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films President Arianna Bocco and Director of Acquisitions Aijah Keith with Marie Laure Montironi, Executive Vice President International Sales at Pathé.

IFC FILMS DIGS INTO COMING-OF-AGE THRILLER “JOHN AND THE HOLE”

IFC FILMS DIGS INTO COMING-OF-AGE THRILLER “JOHN AND THE HOLE” DIRECTED BY PASCUAL SISTO FOR NORTH AMERICA
Starring Charlie Shotwell, Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Ehle, and Taissa Farmiga

NEW YORK, NY (May 6, 2021) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to the psychological coming-of-age thriller John and the Hole, directed by visual artist Pascual Sisto – one of Variety’s ‘10 Directors to Watch’ in 2021 – in his feature debut. IFC Films plans to release the film August 6th, 2021.

John and the Hole is adapted by screenwriter Nicolás Giacobone from his short story “El pozo”. Giacobone earned Academy Award & Golden Globe wins for Birdman, an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Film for co-writing Biutiful and has an upcoming film Limbo in production with Alejandro Iñárritu that he also co-wrote. The sound design team includes Nicolas Becker, Jaime Baksht, Michelle Couttolenc, and Carlos Cortés who recently took home the Academy-Award® for sound on behalf of Sound of Metal.

John and the Hole stars Charlie Shotwell (Captain Fantastic), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Jennifer Ehle (Zero Dark Thirty, Saint Maud), and Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story). The film is produced by Elika Portnoy and Alex Orlovsky of Mutressa Movies and Michael Bowes, and executive produced by 3311 alongside Phil Hoelting, Marco Vicini, and Fernando Tsai.

In this enigmatic and unsettling meditation on adolescent angst, 13-year-old John (Charlie Shotwell) discovers an unfinished bunker while exploring the neighboring woods—a deep hole in the ground. Seemingly without provocation, he drugs his affluent parents (Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Ehle) and older sister (Taissa Farmiga), holding them captive within the bunker. As they anxiously wait for John to free them from the hole, the boy returns home, where he can finally enjoy and explore a newfound independence. Exploring the difficult passage from childhood freedom to adult responsibility, John and the Hole is both a slow-burn psychological thriller and meditative coming-of-age fable, anchored by a chilling lead performance from Charlie Shotwell.

Selected as part of the cancelled 2020 Cannes Film Festival, John and the Hole made its world premiere bow in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, where Sisto’s confident direction and Shotwell’s mannered performance caught the attention of critics. In a review for the Hollywood Reporter, David Rooney wrote, “Sisto has an arresting visual style, a firm command of tone and an impressive ability to steer his fine cast onto the same rigorous wavelength, all of which makes him a talent to watch”, adding, “Shotwell is just astonishing”. Peter Debruge of Variety praised the echoes of Yorgos Lanthimos and Michael Haneke in the film, noting, “Like Dogtooth or Benny’s Video, it works as a kind of suburban surrealism….with any luck, the film will put both Shotwell and Sisto on the map.”

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, said, “Pascual has crafted a film that channels all the anger and uncertainty of adolescence into a meticulously constructed nail-biter that really gets under your skin. We’re thrilled to be partnering with him for the release of this incredibly exciting debut.”

Director Pascual Sisto added, “It was very important to find a good home that will provide the right context for the film to find its audience. I’m extremely happy with IFC, it’s a company with an incredible history that really caters to each film and all their nuances. I’m excited for them to guide us into its final release.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films President Arianna Bocco with ICM Partners and UTA acting on behalf of the filmmakers. Sisto and Giacobone are also represented by both Untitled Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham LLC.

IFC MIDNIGHT DEVOURS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS FOR WELSH-LANGUAGE REVENGE HORROR “THE FEAST”

IFC MIDNIGHT DEVOURS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS FOR WELSH-LANGUAGE REVENGE HORROR “THE FEAST”
NEW YORK, NY (April 29, 2021) – IFC Midnight announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to the Welsh-language supernatural revenge horror The Feast, directed by BAFTA-winning television director Lee Haven Jones in his feature debut. IFC Midnight will release the film Thanksgiving 2021.

Directed by Jones and written and produced by Roger Williams, The Feast stars Annes Elwy, Nia Roberts, and Julian Lewis Jones alongside Sion Alun Davies, Steffan Cennydd, Rhodri Meilir, and Lisa Palfrey. The Feast was produced through Ffilm Cymru Wales’ Cinematic scheme and was funded by S4C, Ffilm Cymru Wales, BFI (using funds from the National Lottery) and Fields Park. The film was produced in association with Melville Media Limited with support from Great Point Media.

Rooted in the potent mythical fables of Wales, The Feast unfolds over the course of a single evening as a wealthy family gathers at their lavish home in the Welsh mountains for a dinner party, hosting a local businessman and neighbouring farmer to broker a business deal to mine the surrounding countryside. When a mysterious young woman arrives to be their waitress for the evening, the family’s beliefs and values are challenged as her quiet yet disturbing presence begins to unravel their lives – slowly, deliberately, and with the most terrifying of consequences. A slow burn meditation on history and tradition, greed and responsibility, identity and difference, The Feast is a contemporary morality tale that questions who is truly meant to inherit the earth, permeated with a mounting sense of dread that leads to a horrifying, blood-soaked conclusion.

Filmed in the Welsh language, The Feast made its world premiere as a Midnighters entry at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival, with Jones’ meticulous composition and Annes Elwy’s eerie central performance catching the attention of U.S. and international critics alike. In a review for Screen International, Nikki Baughan praised her lead performance as “beguiling”, writing, “Annes Elwy is quietly mesmerizing…in a role which utilizes little dialogue, Elwy plums Cadi’s surprising depths with a quiet intensity”. Reviewing for Variety, Jessica Kiang wrote, “The chilly control of Jones’ filmmaking, enhanced by the pristine, deadened soundscape and Samuel Sim’s intriguing, atmospheric score, keeps our attention squirming on the hook,” adding, “the direction is so confident and the craft so impeccable that The Feast, though built from few ingredients, fills you up like a three-course meal”.

Arianna Bocco President of IFC Films, said, “It’s hard to shake the sense of fear and apprehension that you feel while watching The Feast, a terrifying and twisted fable that will keep you on the very edge of your seat until the shocking, grand guignol-worthy finale. We’re so excited to work with Lee on his feature debut and can’t wait to share The Feast with horror audiences everywhere.”

Writer and Producer Roger Williams added, “I’m thrilled IFC Midnight will be serving up The Feast in the USA and Canada. I’m certain audiences across North America will be entertained and horrified in equal measure by our unique Welsh film which thanks to IFC Midnight will now find the widest audience possible.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films President Arianna Bocco and Director of Acquisitions Aijah Keith with Bankside Films representing the filmmakers.

IFC FILMS SCOOPS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO SONIA KENNEBECK’S DOCUMENTARY THRILLER “ENEMIES OF THE STATE”

IFC FILMS SCOOPS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO SONIA KENNEBECK’S DOCUMENTARY THRILLER “ENEMIES OF THE STATE” EXECUTIVE PRODUCED BY ERROL MORRIS
NEW YORK, NY (March 9, 2021) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to Sonia Kennebeck’s documentary thriller ENEMIES OF THE STATE, which investigates the complicated and bizarre case of alleged Wikileaks courier and Anonymous hacker Matt DeHart. IFC Films will release the film this summer.

Directed by Sonia Kennebeck, who previously explored government whistleblower intimidation in her Emmy-nominated documentary NATIONAL BIRD, the film is the product of years of extensive investigation, featuring in-depth interviews with the DeHart family as well as their attorneys, supporters, and detractors. The film is produced by Kennebeck and Ines Hofmann Kanna of Codebreaker Films and executive produced by Errol Morris.

ENEMIES OF THE STATE blurs the line between reality and paranoia in its exploration of the stranger-than-fiction case of Matt DeHart, a member of hacktivist group Anonymous and alleged whistleblower who believes he was the target of a U.S. government conspiracy. This multifaceted documentary is alternately a compelling legal case study, an espionage thriller, and a thought-provoking work of investigative journalism – a tangled web of secrets and lies with an American family willing to go to any lengths to protect their son at its center. With extraordinary access to the lead characters and key sources, the film presents many contradicting viewpoints as it attempts to solve a mystery that has kept attorneys, activists, and journalists occupied for over a decade.

The documentary made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it caught the attention of critics for its timely subject matter and labyrinthine structure. In a review for Indiewire, Eric Kohn called the film “a fascinating and provocative study of today’s misinformation age”, adding that the film “works best when it investigates the nature of truth at a moment when it’s all too easy to obscure it”. Robert Daniels of RogerEbert.com praised the film’s ability to keep the audience guessing, writing, “the viewer is sucked into connecting dots that may not exist…[Kennebeck] uses our natural addiction to turn ambiguous clues into larger narratives for a shocking documentary that’s amazing at every turn”. Reviewing for Variety, Tomris Laffly noted that, “while ENEMIES OF THE STATE does not necessarily provide all the answers, it sneakily sharpens your analytical radar by its haunting end. And in today’s conspiracy theory fueled world, that just might be everything.”

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, said, “Sonia maintains a deft balance in telling the fascinating story of the DeHart family, with all the twists and turns of a true crime mystery. We’re thrilled to come on board for the release of this astounding and multi-layered documentary.”

Director Sonia Kennebeck added, “In a time of secrets, lies, and head-spinning conspiracy theories, this film will take you on a journey to uncover the truth, as puzzling as it may be. The turns our investigation took are real, and we are excited to share this incredible story in partnership with IFC who have brought some of the most thought-provoking independent films to American audiences.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films President Arianna Bocco, with Matt Burke of Submarine Entertainment acting on behalf of the filmmakers.
