IFC MIDNIGHT PICKS UP NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO WYATT ROCKEFELLER’S SCI-FI WESTERN ‘SETTLERS’ STARRING SOFIA BOUTELLA, BROOKLYNN PRINCE and JONNY LEE MILLER
NEW YORK, NEW YORK (APRIL 14, 2021) – IFC Midnight announced today that it is acquiring North American rights to Wyatt Rockefeller’s feature narrative debut, SETTLERS. Written and directed by Rockefeller, SETTLERS stars Sofia Boutella (CLIMAX, KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE, STAR TREK BEYOND), Ismael Cruz Córdova (THE UNDOING, THE GOOD WIFE), Brooklynn Prince (THE FLORIDA PROJECT, HOME BEFORE DARK), Nell Tiger Free (M. The film is produced by Julie Fabrizio for Jericho Motion Pictures, Joshua Horsfield for Intake Films and Johan Kruger for Brittle Star Pictures, alongside executive producer Ben Pugh, co-founder of 42. IFC Midnight will release the film in summer 2021.

IFC FILMS SCOOPS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO SONIA KENNEBECK’S DOCUMENTARY THRILLER “ENEMIES OF THE STATE”

IFC FILMS SCOOPS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO SONIA KENNEBECK’S DOCUMENTARY THRILLER “ENEMIES OF THE STATE” EXECUTIVE PRODUCED BY ERROL MORRIS
NEW YORK, NY (March 9, 2021) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to Sonia Kennebeck’s documentary thriller ENEMIES OF THE STATE, which investigates the complicated and bizarre case of alleged Wikileaks courier and Anonymous hacker Matt DeHart. IFC Films will release the film this summer.

Directed by Sonia Kennebeck, who previously explored government whistleblower intimidation in her Emmy-nominated documentary NATIONAL BIRD, the film is the product of years of extensive investigation, featuring in-depth interviews with the DeHart family as well as their attorneys, supporters, and detractors. The film is produced by Kennebeck and Ines Hofmann Kanna of Codebreaker Films and executive produced by Errol Morris.

ENEMIES OF THE STATE blurs the line between reality and paranoia in its exploration of the stranger-than-fiction case of Matt DeHart, a member of hacktivist group Anonymous and alleged whistleblower who believes he was the target of a U.S. government conspiracy. This multifaceted documentary is alternately a compelling legal case study, an espionage thriller, and a thought-provoking work of investigative journalism – a tangled web of secrets and lies with an American family willing to go to any lengths to protect their son at its center. With extraordinary access to the lead characters and key sources, the film presents many contradicting viewpoints as it attempts to solve a mystery that has kept attorneys, activists, and journalists occupied for over a decade.

The documentary made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it caught the attention of critics for its timely subject matter and labyrinthine structure. In a review for Indiewire, Eric Kohn called the film “a fascinating and provocative study of today’s misinformation age”, adding that the film “works best when it investigates the nature of truth at a moment when it’s all too easy to obscure it”. Robert Daniels of RogerEbert.com praised the film’s ability to keep the audience guessing, writing, “the viewer is sucked into connecting dots that may not exist…[Kennebeck] uses our natural addiction to turn ambiguous clues into larger narratives for a shocking documentary that’s amazing at every turn”. Reviewing for Variety, Tomris Laffly noted that, “while ENEMIES OF THE STATE does not necessarily provide all the answers, it sneakily sharpens your analytical radar by its haunting end. And in today’s conspiracy theory fueled world, that just might be everything.”

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, said, “Sonia maintains a deft balance in telling the fascinating story of the DeHart family, with all the twists and turns of a true crime mystery. We’re thrilled to come on board for the release of this astounding and multi-layered documentary.”

Director Sonia Kennebeck added, “In a time of secrets, lies, and head-spinning conspiracy theories, this film will take you on a journey to uncover the truth, as puzzling as it may be. The turns our investigation took are real, and we are excited to share this incredible story in partnership with IFC who have brought some of the most thought-provoking independent films to American audiences.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films President Arianna Bocco, with Matt Burke of Submarine Entertainment acting on behalf of the filmmakers.

IFC FILMS TAKES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO URGENT DOCUMENTARY “THE MEANING OF HITLER”

IFC FILMS TAKES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO URGENT DOCUMENTARY “THE MEANING OF HITLER”
NEW YORK, NY (March 2, 2021) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker’s documentary THE MEANING OF HILTER, a thought-provoking exploration of the lasting cultural fascination with the Nazi dictator and its resonance on present day politics. IFC Films will release the film later this year.

Directed by Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker and filmed over the course of four years, the documentary takes its framework from Sebastian Haffner’s 1978 best selling book of the same title, dismantling the aura of legend surrounding Hitler’s life through interviews with subjects including Martin Amis, Saul Friedländer, Sir Richard Evans, Yehuda Bauer, and famed Nazi hunters Beate and Serge Klarsfeld. This film is produced by Epperlein, Tucker, Dana O’Keefe and Mike Lerner from Means of Production, and executive produced by Jeffrey Lurie, Marie Therese Guirgis and Anthony Dobkin. THE MEANING OF HITLER is a production of Uwaga Films and Play/Action Pictures.

THE MEANING OF HILTER is a provocative interrogation of our culture’s fascination with Hitler and Nazism set against the backdrop of the current rise of white supremacy, the normalization of antisemitism, and the weaponization of history itself. Shot in nine countries, the film traces Hitler’s movements, his rise to power, and the scenes of his crimes through the lens of key locations in his life as historians, writers, and scholars weigh in on the lasting impact of his virulent ideology. As fears of authoritarianism and fascism now abound, the film explores the myths and misconceptions of our understanding of the past, and the difficult process of coming to terms with it at a time in our history when it seems more urgent than ever.

The film was praised by critics for its political resonance following a world premiere bow at DOC NYC, with Sheri Linden of the Hollywood Reporter calling it “an urgent warning about the blind spots that have led us to the present moment.” In Indiewire, Eric Kohn wrote that the film was “a bracing blend of historical inquiry and cinematic soul-searching,” adding, “the movie isn’t just another cautionary tale; it’s a jagged intellectual wakeup call that cuts deep, and America can’t hear it enough.”

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, said, “Petra and Michael’s documentaries stand out for their political urgency and nuanced yet provocative approach, and their latest work in THE MEANING OF HILTER is no exception. Their examination of Hitler’s lasting cultural draw in the face of the continued normalization of white supremacy and anti-Semitism is nothing less than essential, and we’re thrilled to have the chance to partner with them and bring this important dialogue to audiences.”

“In the wake of a politically tumultuous year, THE MEANING OF HITLER could not be more timely and we are honored to have IFC as a partner to bring the film to American audiences,” said Petra Epperlein, the film’s co-director and producer. “If there is any take-away from the recent past, it’s that history matters.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films President Arianna Bocco, with Cinetic representing the filmmakers. Autlook Filmsales is handling international rights to the film.

IFC FILMS LANDS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO ‘THE NOWHERE INN’

IFC FILMS LANDS NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO ‘THE NOWHERE INN’ AND GOES THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS WITH ANNIE ‘ST. VINCENT’ CLARK AND CARRIE BROWNSTEIN
IFC Films with Topic Studios introduces Bill Benz’s feature debut, set for a Fall 2021 release

NEW YORK, NY (March 1, 2021) IFC Films announced today that it is acquiring North American rights to THE NOWHERE INN from Topic Studios, produced, written by, and starring Carrie Brownstein and Annie ‘St. Vincent’ Clark from first-time filmmaker and frequent Portlandia collaborator / writer Bill Benz. The film marks the first feature length film in which Clark has simultaneously produced, starred and composed all the original music. THE NOWHERE INN had its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival in the Midnight Section, and IFC Films will be releasing THE NOWHERE INN in Fall 2021.

From real-life friends Annie Clark (a.k.a. GRAMMY award-winning musician St. Vincent) and Carrie Brownstein (Portlandia, Sleater-Kinney, the best-selling Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl) comes the metafictional account of two creative forces banding together to make a documentary about St. Vincent’s music, touring life, and public persona. But they quickly discover unpredictable forces lurking within subject and filmmaker that threaten to derail the friendship, the project, and the duo’s creative lives.

Arianna Bocco, President at IFC Films said, “Carrie Brownstein and Annie Clark brilliantly push the boundaries of how we communicate through film, music and comedy as only true artists can. We’re thrilled to take viewers to THE NOWHERE INN and bring this unique and hilarious film to audiences and fans nationwide.”

“We are extremely proud of what we’ve created with THE NOWHERE INN,” said Brownstein and Clark. “And we couldn’t imagine a better home and partner for it than IFC Films.”

Debut feature filmmaker Bill Benz, a frequent “Portlandia” collaborator and writer, delivers a densely woven, laugh-out-loud funny and increasingly fractured commentary on reality, identity, and authenticity. This is the story of two close friends’ attempt to wrestle the truth out of a complex subject before the hall of mirrors that is their artistic lives devours them completely.

Added Ryan Heller, Senior Vice President, Film & Acquisitions for Topic Studios, “It has been our true joy to collaborate with Annie, Carrie and Bill on this audacious labor or love and friendship. And we’re thrilled to be in such great hands with Arianna and the team at IFC Films who have made a virtue of delivering bold, genre-defying stories to audiences.”

Topic Studios financed the film and produced with Ways and Means and Crazy Galore. The film was produced by Jett Steiger, Lana Kim, Annie Clark and Carrie Brownstein. Executive producers for Topic Studios are Michael Bloom, Ryan Heller and Maria Zuckerman. Adam Pincus and Bobcat Goldthwait also serve as executive producers. Co-producers are Josh Bachove and Danny Harris.

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films’ EVP of Acquisitions and Productions Arianna Bocco with Deborah McIntosh at Endeavor Content and Paradigm on behalf of the filmmakers.

IFC FILMS PICKS UP SIZZLING ROMANCE “MONDAY” STARRING SEBASTIAN STAN AND DENISE GOUGH

IFC FILMS PICKS UP SIZZLING ROMANCE “MONDAY” STARRING SEBASTIAN STAN AND DENISE GOUGH SET OVER ONE SUMMER IN GREECE
FILM TO HAVE APRIL 16TH RELEASE IN NORTH AMERICA

NEW YORK, NY (February 5, 2021) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to Argyris Papadimitropoulos’ latest feature MONDAY starring Sebastian Stan (THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER, I TONYA) and Denise Gough (COLETTE, THE OTHER LAMB). Produced by Christos V. Konstantakopoulos, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Damian Jones, Deanna Barillari, and Papadimitropoulos at Faliro House – co-written by Argyris Papadimitropoulos with Rob Hayes. MONDAY is Argyris Papadimitropoulos’ fourth feature. MONDAY was an official selection at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival and 2020 Toronto International Film Festival. IFC Films will release the film on April 16th, 2021 in select theaters and on demand.

When Mickey (Sebastian Stan) is dragged away from his DJ set by a drunken friend and introduced to Chloe (Denise Gough) one hot summer night in Athens, the attraction between the pair is immediately palpable—so palpable that before they know it they’re waking up naked on the beach Saturday morning. And so it goes that a one night stand on Friday turns into a whirlwind weekend romance that leads to serious conversations when they face the harsh sunlight on Monday morning.

Director Argyris Papadimitropoulos said, “In many ways, the film has become even more relevant in this current environment, as all relationships got challenged during the lockdown and Chloe’s and Mickey’s story is a very realistic take on relationships. At a time when things have started getting more optimistic in the world and a summer trip to Greece, crowded parties, people kissing and having fun is something we are all longing for – I believe the timing is perfect to release the film and the fact that it found a home at IFC Films, makes my smile a little bigger.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by President of IFC Films Arianna Bocco with ICM Partners and Protagonist Pictures on behalf of the filmmakers.

IFC FILMS LANDS OLIVER HERMANUS’ STUNNING QUEER WAR DRAMA “MOFFIE”

IFC FILMS LANDS OLIVER HERMANUS’ STUNNING QUEER WAR DRAMA “MOFFIE” FOR NORTH AMERICAN DISTRIBUTION
NEW YORK, NY (December 17, 2020) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to South African Oliver Hermanus’ ravishing queer war film MOFFIE – a UK indie Portobello Productions film – set against the backdrop of the Apartheid-era South African Border War. IFC Films will release the critically acclaimed film in April 2021.

Directed by Oliver Hermanus and adapted from André Carl van der Merwe’s autobiographical 2006 novel by Hermanus and Portobello’s Jack Sidey, MOFFIE premiered in the Orizzonti section of the 76th Venice International Film Festival, where Hermanus’ previous feature The Endless River was the first South African film to be nominated for the Golden Lion. MOFFIE stars Kai Luke Brummer, Ryan de Villiers, Matthew Vey, Stefan Vermaak, and Hilton Pelser. The film is produced by Eric Abraham – producer of Oscar-winning films Pawel Pawlikowski’s IDA and Jan Sverak’s KOLYA – and Jack Sidey.

Set in 1981 South Africa, the film centers on closeted 16-year-old Nicholas Van der Swart (Kai Luke Brummer) as he begins the two years of compulsory military service required of all young white South African men, preparing to defend the Apartheid regime on the Angolan war front. The threat of communism and “die swart gevaar” (the so-called black danger) is at an all-time high. But that’s not the only danger Nicholas faces. He must survive the brutality of the army – something that becomes even more difficult when a connection is sparked between him and a fellow recruit.

Reviewing positively out of Venice, Variety critic Guy Lodge praised Hermanus as “South Africa’s most vital contemporary filmmaker” and Moffie as his “masterpiece in the true sense of the term”. Lodge hailed the film as “a director’s triumph first and foremost: a dogs-of-war hellride of Full Metal Jacket intensity, a queer coming-of-age meditation with something of Moonlight’s salt-on-skin tenderness, and a scorching evocation of South Africa’s Border War shame with no major precedent in a national cinema still working through its blind spots”, adding, “it fair takes your breath away”. Released across South Africa and in the UK (CURZON) earlier this year, MOFFIE has since been sold across Europe.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, said, “MOFFIE is a brilliant cinematic vision with a powerful message that will inspire audiences and critics alike. We’re thrilled to come on board with such an accomplished film and singular directorial voice.”

Director Oliver Hermanus added, “It’s a fantastic privilege to have our film find such a wonderful American partner in IFC Films. They house the work of many of the filmmakers I greatly admire, and I am thrilled that they have taken up an interest to share Moffie with an American audience.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by President of IFC Films Arianna Bocco, with Rose Schwartz of NY legal firm Franklin, Weinrib, Rudell and Vassallo and independent consultant Julie Dansker acting on behalf of the filmmakers.
