IFC FILMS PICKS UP NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO HEART-WARMING COMEDY ‘LAST CALL’ STARRING JEREMY PIVEN, BRUCE DERN, AND TARYN MANNING
NEW YORK, NY (Jan 6, 2020) – IFC Films announced today that it is acquiring North American rights to LAST CALL, directed, co-written, and produced by Paolo Pilladi. The film stars Jeremy Piven (Entourage) along with film icon Bruce Dern (Nebraska, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood), Taryn Manning, (Orange is the New Black), Jamie Kennedy (Malibu’s Most Wanted), Cathy Moriarty (Raging Bull), Jack McGee (The Fighter), Zach McGowan (Shameless) and Cheri Oteri (Saturday Night Live). Also producing is DJ Dodd, Taryn Manning, Zach McGowan, Ante Novakovic, Jeremy Piven, and Rob Simmons. IFC Films is planning a 2021 release.

A local success story and real estate developer, Mick (Jeremy Piven), returns home to his offbeat blue collar Irish neighborhood in the shadows of Philadelphia for a funeral and is obligated to stay to ensure his parents’ ailing family business gets back on course. Amidst all of this, he grows closer to his childhood crush (Taryn Manning) who is also back in town, while enduring the constant ridicule from his old hometown crew. As Mick begins to reconnect with the neighborhood he grew up in, he finds himself at a crossroads when forced to either raze or resurrect the family bar.

“IFC is the ideal home for this film,” Pilladi said. “We’re thrilled to share this comedic peek into an eclectic neighborhood undergoing painful gentrification, which was brought alive by our legendary ensemble”.

IFC FILMS LANDS OLIVER HERMANUS’ STUNNING QUEER WAR DRAMA “MOFFIE”

IFC FILMS LANDS OLIVER HERMANUS’ STUNNING QUEER WAR DRAMA “MOFFIE” FOR NORTH AMERICAN DISTRIBUTION
NEW YORK, NY (December 17, 2020) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to South African Oliver Hermanus’ ravishing queer war film MOFFIE – a UK indie Portobello Productions film – set against the backdrop of the Apartheid-era South African Border War. IFC Films will release the critically acclaimed film in April 2021.

Directed by Oliver Hermanus and adapted from André Carl van der Merwe’s autobiographical 2006 novel by Hermanus and Portobello’s Jack Sidey, MOFFIE premiered in the Orizzonti section of the 76th Venice International Film Festival, where Hermanus’ previous feature The Endless River was the first South African film to be nominated for the Golden Lion. MOFFIE stars Kai Luke Brummer, Ryan de Villiers, Matthew Vey, Stefan Vermaak, and Hilton Pelser. The film is produced by Eric Abraham – producer of Oscar-winning films Pawel Pawlikowski’s IDA and Jan Sverak’s KOLYA – and Jack Sidey.

Set in 1981 South Africa, the film centers on closeted 16-year-old Nicholas Van der Swart (Kai Luke Brummer) as he begins the two years of compulsory military service required of all young white South African men, preparing to defend the Apartheid regime on the Angolan war front. The threat of communism and “die swart gevaar” (the so-called black danger) is at an all-time high. But that’s not the only danger Nicholas faces. He must survive the brutality of the army – something that becomes even more difficult when a connection is sparked between him and a fellow recruit.

Reviewing positively out of Venice, Variety critic Guy Lodge praised Hermanus as “South Africa’s most vital contemporary filmmaker” and Moffie as his “masterpiece in the true sense of the term”. Lodge hailed the film as “a director’s triumph first and foremost: a dogs-of-war hellride of Full Metal Jacket intensity, a queer coming-of-age meditation with something of Moonlight’s salt-on-skin tenderness, and a scorching evocation of South Africa’s Border War shame with no major precedent in a national cinema still working through its blind spots”, adding, “it fair takes your breath away”. Released across South Africa and in the UK (CURZON) earlier this year, MOFFIE has since been sold across Europe.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, said, “MOFFIE is a brilliant cinematic vision with a powerful message that will inspire audiences and critics alike. We’re thrilled to come on board with such an accomplished film and singular directorial voice.”

Director Oliver Hermanus added, “It’s a fantastic privilege to have our film find such a wonderful American partner in IFC Films. They house the work of many of the filmmakers I greatly admire, and I am thrilled that they have taken up an interest to share Moffie with an American audience.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by President of IFC Films Arianna Bocco, with Rose Schwartz of NY legal firm Franklin, Weinrib, Rudell and Vassallo and independent consultant Julie Dansker acting on behalf of the filmmakers.

The film stars Sienna Guillory (Resident Evil film series, High Rise), British rising stars Jessica Alexander (Get Even) and Ruby Stokes (Rocks, Una), and award-winning actress Lindsay Duncan CBE (Made in Italy, Private Lives). A BANQUET will be released by IFC Midnight in 2021.

IFC FILMS PICKS UP ‘KURT VONNEGUT: UNSTUCK IN TIME’

IFC FILMS PICKS UP ‘KURT VONNEGUT: UNSTUCK IN TIME’, A DECADES-SPANNING DOCUMENTARY ON THE ICONIC AMERICAN AUTHOR
FILM IS A WITTY, SHARP-EDGED PORTRAIT OF VONNEGUT, SEEN THROUGH HIS FRIENDSHIP WITH OSCAR-NOMINATED DIRECTOR ROBERT B. WEIDE
TO CELEBRATE THIS ANNOUNCEMENT AND THE 98TH ANNIVERSARY OF KURT VONNEGUT’S BIRTHDAY

NEW YORK, NY (November 11, 2020) – IFC Films announced today that it is acquiring North American rights to KURT VONNEGUT: UNSTUCK IN TIME, the touching, long-in-the-works documentary directed by industry masters Robert B. Weide (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Don Argott (The Art of the Steal). Tracing the life and career of famed novelist and humorist Kurt Vonnegut, who died in 2007 at age 84, the film is produced by Whyaduck Productions and 9.14 Pictures. IFC Films is planning a release in Summer 2021.

The feature documentary, the first of its kind on Vonnegut, is a deep, immersive dive into the author’s upbringing and his creative output. It spans back through his childhood in Indianapolis, his experience as a Prisoner of War in World War II, his marriage and family, his early careers as a publicist for General Electric and a car salesman, and his years as a struggling writer, leading to eventual superstardom in 1969 following the publication of his lightning-bolt anti-war novel Slaughterhouse-Five.

The protagonist of that book, Billy Pilgrim, has become “unstuck in time,” arriving randomly at different moments of his life. The phrase provides an apt title for the documentary, as we experience glimpses of Vonnegut over the years through the prism of his long-evolving friendship with director Robert Weide. An Emmy winner (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Academy Award nominee (Lenny Bruce: Swear to Tell the Truth), Weide first discovered Vonnegut’s writing as a high school student, and wrote a letter to the author in 1982, asking for permission to make a documentary. Vonnegut agreed, and Weide began shooting footage of Vonnegut for the film as far back as 1988, having no idea that the filmmaker and subject would become intimate friends over the next two decades

In addition to that 32-year-old footage, the film is abundant with whimsical and open-hearted interviews with Vonnegut, plus rarely-seen archival material. We also hear from his children, his contemporaries, and Weide himself, as the documentary turns inward as a thoughtful examination of its own creation. The light-touch meta technique is one that echoes the work of Vonnegut, who often placed himself as a supporting character in his own novels, with unexpectedly profound results.

Weide’s credits as a director also include documentaries on the Marx Brothers, Woody Allen, and W.C. Fields. He wrote the screenplay for the 1996 film Mother Night, based on Vonnegut’s 1961 novel. Co-director Don Argott, the Philadelphia-based filmmaker, has helmed or collaborated on several acclaimed documentaries, including Rock School, The Art of the Steal, The Atomic States of America, Framing John DeLorean, and Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries.

Arianna Bocco, EVP of Acquisitions and Productions of IFC Films said, “IFC Films has a proud history of supporting long-evolving film projects and we are thrilled to partner with Bob Weide on this 40-year journey of documenting the legacy of Kurt Vonnegut. The portrait that Bob and Don have created is an unparalleled look at an icon who has shaped modern culture and we are honored to bring that rare glimpse to audiences across the country.”

Director Robert B. Weide added, “When I first approached Vonnegut to authorize this film in 1982, I envisioned a fairly conventional author documentary. As the decades rolled by, fate stepped in, and what I wound up with was far from conventional. As my friendship with my literary idol grew, full disclosure was called for, and Don Argott came on to document the meta element of this story, as I continued to focus on Vonnegut’s biography. What we wound up with was a hybrid that combined our respective strengths as filmmakers and will hopefully be seen as a worthy tribute by Vonnegut’s fans and a compelling introduction for the uninitiated. I’m grateful to IFC for stepping up and bringing this lifelong passion project to the public.”

Don Argott, co-director, added, “As a lifelong Vonnegut fan, it was an honor to be a part of this film. Kurt’s unique voice has been sorely missed, and I’m looking forward to audiences re-discovering his genius.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by Arianna Bocco, EVP Acquisitions and Productions of IFC Films with the filmmakers.

IFC MIDNIGHT SCORES U.S. RIGHTS TO SUPERNATURAL HORROR ‘THE VIGIL’ IN BIDDING WAR

IFC MIDNIGHT SCORES U.S. RIGHTS TO SUPERNATURAL HORROR ‘THE VIGIL’ IN BIDDING WAR

NEW YORK, NY (October 7th, 2020) – IFC Midnight announced today that it is acquiring U.S. rights to writer-director Keith Thomas’ feature debut, THE VIGIL, a supernatural horror film with a Hasidic Jewish twist. THE VIGIL stars Dave Davis (BOMB CITY), Malky Goldman (UNORTHODOX), Menashe Lustig (MENASHE), Fred Melamed (A SERIOUS MAN), and Lynn Cohen (MUNICH). Producing is Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz (CONTRACTED, BECKY) of BoulderLight Pictures alongside Adam Margules (MENASHE). Additional notable credits within the filmmaking team include editor Brett W. Bachman (MANDY, DANIEL ISN’T REAL), composer Michael Yezerski (THE DEVIL’S CANDY), and cinematographer Zach Kuperstein (THE EYES OF MY MOTHER, THE CLIMB).

IFC Films and BoulderLight, being long-time collaborators, came together in a shared sense of ingenuity to build off their unconventional chart-toppers earlier this year – IFC with THE RENTAL (#1 movie in America at the summer box office and on the iTunes charts) and Natalie Erika James’ critically-acclaimed RELIC, BoulderLight with BECKY. IFC Films box office totals surpassed $4.5M during the pandemic with innovative release strategies that continue to evolve.

THE VIGIL had its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival in the coveted Midnight Madness section with a subsequent U.S. premiere at the 2020 SXSW Film Festival. IFC Midnight will release the film on February 26th, 2021.

Steeped in ancient Jewish lore and demonology, THE VIGIL is a supernatural horror film set over the course of a single evening in Brooklyn’s Hasidic Borough Park neighborhood. Low on funds and having recently left his insular religious community, Yakov reluctantly accepts an offer from his former rabbi and confidante to take on the responsibility of an overnight “shomer,” fulfilling the Jewish practice of watching over the body of a deceased community member. Shortly after arriving at the recently departed’s dilapidated house to sit the vigil, Yakov begins to realize that something is very, very wrong.

Director Keith Thomas commented, “THE VIGIL is a real passion project. Not only for me but our whole team and I’m excited to see how the themes of the film resonate with American audiences. I’m also honored to collaborate with IFC on this release. They have a distinguished record of putting out thought-provoking genre films and their passion for THE VIGIL is palpable.”

Arianna Bocco EVP of Acquisitions and Productions of IFC Films added, “We could not be more thrilled to partner with our longtime friends at Boulderlight on bringing this unique and truly scary horror film to US audiences. Keith Thomas is an incredible filmmaker, who with THE VIGIL, brings a fresh take on the supernatural genre with something we have never seen before.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films’ Arianna Bocco EVP of Acquisitions and Productions with CAA Media Finance and BoulderLight Pictures on behalf of the filmmakers.
