IFC FILMS TO REUNITE WITH DIRECTOR MICHAEL TYBURSKI FOR NEW SCI-FI COMEDY ‘TURN ME ON’

IFC FILMS TO REUNITE WITH DIRECTOR MICHAEL TYBURSKI FOR NEW SCI-FI COMEDY ‘TURN ME ON’ WITH BEL POWLEY AND NICK ROBINSON

IFC Films will take North American Rights with filming to begin November 2022
NEW YORK, NEW YORK (May 18, 2022) – IFC Films announced today that they will reunite with director Michael Tyburski (The Sound of Silence) for his sophomore feature, sci-fi comedy TURN ME ON, starring Bel Powley (The King of Staten Island, The Diary of a Teenage Girl, The Morning Show) and Nick Robinson (Love, Simon, Maid, A Teacher). The screenplay is written by Angela Bourassa (2020 Black List writer, If You Were The Last), and the film is produced by Zareh Nalbandian, Toby Nalbandian, and Gregory Schmidt of Truant Pictures, the live-action specialty division of Animal Logic Studios, along with producer Sean Bradley (Paddleton). TURN ME ON is executive produced by Fabien Westerhoff and Bourassa. Shooting will begin in November 2022 and IFC Films will release it in theaters during the Summer of 2023. The film will later stream exclusively on AMC+.

In TURN ME ON, the inconvenience of human emotion has been eradicated by a government-imposed daily vitamin. A young couple (Powley and Robinson) skip their dose to discover love, joy and sex for the first time, but they quickly come to realize they must also handle the emotional baggage that comes with it.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, said, “Michael is a major talent. He has proven himself to be a gifted director with an original perspective both on the page and on the big screen. TURN ME ON is a great next step for him and we are thrilled he has come home to IFC Films for his next feature.”

Director Michael Tyburski added, “I’m so thrilled to be making this film and to also be bringing it to the big screen with the teams at Film Constellation and IFC Films—both whom I’ve come to trust dearly and I know will truly provide the perfect homes for this story.”

IFC Films and Tyburski previously teamed up for the release of his inventive 2019 feature film debut The Sound of Silence, starring Peter Sarsgaard and Rashida Jones, which he co-wrote with Ben Nabors. The Sound of Silence had its world premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and was based on Tyburski’s award-winning short Palimpsest, which debuted at Sundance in 2013.

The deal for the film was negotiated by SVP of Acquisitions and Productions for IFC Films, Scott Shooman with UTA independent film group, CAA Media Finance and Fabien Westerhoff of Film Constellation on behalf of the filmmakers.

Cannes, May 17, 2022 — HanWay Films has closed sales on multiple territories to award-winning writer Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s (Ida, Disobedience, Colette) directorial debut Hot Milk, based on the bestselling novel by Deborah Levy and starring Academy Award nominee Jessie Buckley, Fiona Shaw and Vicky Krieps. Lenkiewicz delves into the complexities of a relationship between a single mother and daughter in Hot Milk where the heat and atmosphere of Almería become an epic canvas for this intimate exploration of sex, love and the bonds that tie us all together.

Rose (Shaw) and her daughter Sofia (Buckley) travel to the Spanish seaside town of Almería to consult with the shamanic Dr Gomez, a physician who could possibly hold the cure to Rose’s mystery illness, which has left her bound to a wheelchair. But in the sultry atmosphere of this sun-bleached town Sofia, who has been trapped by her mother’s illness all her life, finally starts to shed her inhibitions, enticed by the persuasive charms of enigmatic traveller Ingrid (Krieps). Sofia’s increased freedom becomes too much for her controlling mother, and as the hot sun beats down, their relationship simmers with pent-up resentments and bitterness, threatening to tear the fragile threads that hold them together, and leading them to a dramatic conclusion.

IFC FILMS TAKE NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS ON ‘R.M.N.’

IFC FILMS TAKE NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS ON ‘R.M.N.’ FROM PALME D’OR WINNING DIRECTOR CRISTIAN MUNGIU AHEAD OF CANNES PREMIERE

‘R.M.N.’ IS THE FIFTH COLLABORATION BETWEEN MUNGIU AND IFC FILMS

CANNES, FRANCE (MAY 17, 2022) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to R.M.N., from award winning writer, director and producer Cristian Mungiu ahead of its world premiere in Cannes. The acquisition marks the fifth time IFC Films and Mungiu have partnered on distribution. The film stars Marin Grigore and Judith State. R.M.N. is

produced by Cristian Mungiu with Mobra Films and executive produced by Tudor Reu. Co-producers include Pascal Caucheteux and Gregoire Sorlat of Why Not Productions, Sean Wheelan of Filmgate Films, Anthony Muir and Kristina Börjeson of Film I Väst, and Delphine Tomson of Les Films Du Fleuve. IFC Films will release the film theatrically in 2022.

A few days before Christmas, having quit his job in Germany, Matthias (Marin Grigore) returns to his multi-ethnic Transylvanian village. He wishes to involve himself more in the education of his son, Rudi, left for too long in the care of his mother, Ana, and to rid the boy of the unresolved fears that have taken hold of him. He’s preoccupied with his old father, Otto and also eager to see his ex-lover, Csilla (Judith State). When a few new workers are hired at the small factory that Csilla manages, the peace of the community is disturbed, underlying fears grip the adults, and frustrations, conflicts and passions erupt through the thin veneer of apparent understanding and calm.

Mungiu’s first feature OCCIDENT premiered in Quinzaine Réalisateurs in 2002. In 2007 he was awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS. He next returned to Cannes in 2009 as a writer, producer, and co-director with the collective episodic film TALES FROM THE GOLDEN AGE.LHis next feature BEYOND THE HILLS (2012) won Best Screenplay and Best Actress and was later shortlisted for Best International Feature for the 85th Academy Awards. He returned to Cannes in 2016 with GRADUATION and won Best Director.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “This Cannes marks the 15th anniversary of when IFC Films started working with Cristian for the first time after the premiere of Palme D’or winning 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS. He is one of the best directors working in cinema today and his incredible body of work has made a lasting impression on the global stage. We are so honored he has made IFC Films his home once again. We were absolutely blown away by the R.M.N. and are delighted to work with Cristian to bring the film to North American audiences.”

Of the acquisition, Director Cristian Mungiu said, ““I am very happy that 15 years after 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS I am back in Cannes and part of the Official Selection. It means even more that I am able to continue working with the people who have stood by me all these years, in my attempt to make my films reach as many people as possible, in as many theaters as possible .I hope they will help me communicate that once again through a story set in a tiny little place, I try to speak about us, today. I think it’s also good to check what are the limits of our freedom as filmmakers today in a world where political correctness started setting limits about what is appropriate to say – and what is not. I feel I owe one explanation: RMN in English is NMR: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance – basically a brain investigation. Given how the world looks today, I feel we need one.”

IFC FILMS TAKES WORLDWIDE RIGHTS TO ASTOUNDING SXSW HIT, AUDIENCE AWARD WINNER ‘BAD AXE’

IFC FILMS TAKES WORLDWIDE RIGHTS TO ASTOUNDING SXSW HIT, AUDIENCE AWARD WINNER ‘BAD AXE’ DIRECTED BY DAVID SIEV

NEW YORK, NEW YORK (April 13, 2022) – IFC Films announced today it is acquiring worldwide rights (excluding Nordics) to the SXSW award-winning documentary BAD AXE, directed by David Siev, making his debut feature. Returning home to rural Michigan, Siev captures an astonishing, personal look at his Asian-American family’s quest to keep their local staple restaurant and American dream alive, amidst the backdrop of pandemic and Trump-era political and racial tensions. Captured with arresting intimacy, the film is a stunning portrait of a family, a community, a nation and a world – and testament to those who are there for you when all else fades away. Produced by Jude Harris (HALF THE PICTURE, 69: THE SAGA OF DANNY HERNANDEZ), Diane Quon (MINDING THE GAP, FINDING YINGYING), Katarina Vasquez (YEAR ZERO), and David Siev (BAD TRIP, YEAR ZERO). Executive Produced by Jeff Tremaine (JACKASS FOREVER, THE DIRT), Shanna Zablow Newton (JACKASS FOREVER, BAD TRIP), Marci Wiseman (BATHTUBS OVER BROADWAY), Daniel J. Chalfen (PRAY AWAY, UNITED SKATES), Dawn Bonder (I DIDN’T SEE YOU THERE), Michael Meinhold (YEAR ZERO) and Tim Chow.

BAD AXE celebrated its world premiere at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award and received Special Jury Recognition for Exceptional Intimacy in Storytelling in the Documentary Feature Competition. The festival jury noted, “Stories centered on the pursuit of the “American Dream” abound. Rarely do they portray the sacrifices and recurrent trials that the promise of a better life entails the way director David Siev accomplishes. For its ability to reveal something unexpected about the American fabric and the American family, BAD AXE deserves celebration.” IFC Films will release the film in theaters and on VOD in 2022.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “David’s love letter to his hometown of BAD AXE, is a powerful and humanistic portrayal of a family navigating life through an historic time. We’re thrilled to partner on this multi-layered documentary that is exactly the kind of independent cinema we are proud to foster. Many films speak about social justice and the American dream, but rarely are we granted such perspective and insight to those living through the personal sacrifice it sometimes takes to live in America. We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome David and his family to the IFC Films family.”

David Siev, director of BAD AXE said “This is a deeply personal project and I’m grateful for IFC Films’ passion for my vision and the way that they have embraced my family and our story. IFC’s commitment to independent, director-driven films shines through in all of their acquisitions. I’m honored for BAD AXE to join their extraordinary slate.”

In a review for Roger Ebert, Brian Tallerico praised the filmmaker’s “deft editor’s eye…opening not just his door but his heart” adding that the result is “a deeply personal film that feels essential when we tell the story of how 2020 shaped this country.” Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter also described the film as “Potent and personal” and “a love letter to overcoming adversity with the help of family, of business, of identity.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by Adam Koehler, Manager of Acquisitions at IFC Films with Andrew Herwitz, President of The Film Sales Company on behalf of the filmmakers.

IFC FILMS TAKES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO “GOD’S COUNTRY”

IFC FILMS TAKES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO “GOD’S COUNTRY” STARRING BAFTA® AND EMMY AWARD WINNER THANDIWE NEWTON IN A CAREER-DEFINING PERFORMANCE FROM DIRECTOR JULIAN HIGGINS

THE CONTEMPORARY WESTERN HAD ITS WORLD PREMIERE AT THE 2022 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL

NEW YORK, NY (February 11, 2022) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to Julian Higgins’ feature debut GOD’S COUNTRY after its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. The film stars BAFTA® and Emmy Award winner Thandiwe Newton (WESTWORLD, CRASH), Jeremy Bobb (THE OUTSIDER), Joris Jarsky (THE LITTLE THINGS), Jefferson White (YELLOWSTONE), Kai Lennox (THE GIRL FROM PLAINVILLE) and Tanaya Beatty (THROUGH BLACK SPRUCE). Based on the short story “Winter Light” by acclaimed author James Lee Burke, the script by Higgins and Shaye Ogbonna is complimented by a distinguished original score by DeAndre James Allen-Toole and breathtaking cinematography by Andrew Wheeler. Cold Iron Pictures’ CEO Miranda Bailey and Amanda Marshall are producing the film, along with Halee Bernard and Higgins. Anthony Ciardelli and The Film Arcade’s Jason Beck will serve as executive producers. IFC Films will release the film theatrically in Fall of 2022.

GOD’S COUNTRY is a character-driven thriller set in the snowy wilderness of the American West. Thandiwe Newton plays Sandra Guidry, a Black professor living and working in a rural college town. She discovers a mysterious red truck parked in her driveway and soon learns it belongs to a pair of local hunters seeking to enter the forest behind her house. Sandra turns them away politely but firmly – her experience tells her these are not the sort of men to welcome freely into her world. But they won’t take no for an answer, and soon Sandra finds herself drawn into an escalating battle of wills that puts her most deeply held values to the test.

Thandiwe Newton’s performance has been hailed by The Hollywood Reporter as ‘arresting’ and Ronda Penrice of The Wrap says, “Thandiwe Newton shines…the weight of this film is on [her] shoulders. And, as always, she delivers.” Brian Tallerico of Roger Ebert further declares GOD’S COUNTRY as, “one of this Sundance’s best films.”

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “Thandiwe Newton delivers one of the most beautifully complex and realistic portraits of a modern-day woman dealing with grief and isolation within the confines of a traditional western turned on its head. Julian Higgins has impressively directed a taut thriller that will surely keep audiences on the edge of their seats.”

Director Julian Higgins added, “IFC Films has established a deep commitment to independent filmmakers and a passion for movies that engage and challenge audiences. GOD’S COUNTRY has been a yearslong labor of love for our entire team, and I am truly thrilled we’ve found the perfect home.”

Higgins is a Los Angeles-based director, writer, and producer. His short films have screened around the globe and won dozens of prizes, including the gold medal Student Academy Award, two Student Emmy Awards, and the grand prize of Ron Howard’s “Project Imagination” Contest. His most recent short, WINTER LIGHT, was a top ten finalist for the Oscar. A New Hampshire native, Julian holds a BFA in Film from Emerson College and an MFA in Directing from the American Film Institute. He currently teaches directing at both institutions.

The deal was negotiated by Scott Shooman, SVP of Acquisitions and Productions for IFC Films and Jessica Lacy of ICM Partners on behalf of the filmmakers.
