Strand Kicks Off With ‘The Final Hunt For D.B. Cooper’ Chronicling An Expert Team As They Attempt to Solve the Only Unsolved Skyjacking in U.S. History

New York, NY – October 14, 2020 – The HISTORY(R) channel sets the premiere date for its new non-fiction programming strand “History’s Greatest Mysteries,” hosted and narrated by Academy Award(R) nominee and Emmy Award(R) winner Laurence Fishburne, which investigates a wide range of historically compelling topics and the mysteries that pervade each including the Titanic, Roswell, John Wilkes Booth and Sir Ernest Shackleton’s lost ice ship. Kicking off with “The Final Hunt for D.B. Cooper,” premiering Saturday, November 14 at 9PM ET/PT, each title within the franchise will showcase fresh, new evidence and perspectives including never-before-released documents to the public, personal diaries and DNA evidence to unearth new facts and information about these infamous and enigmatic chapters in history.

On November 24, 1971, a man calling himself Dan Cooper boarded Northwest Orient Airlines flight #305 in Portland bound for Seattle, wearing a dark suit and a black tie. While in the air, he opened his briefcase showing a bomb to the flight attendant and hijacked the plane. The plane landed in Seattle where he demanded $200,000 in cash, four parachutes and food for the crew before releasing all the passengers. With only three pilots and one flight attendant left on board, they took off from Seattle heading south. Shortly after takeoff, Cooper donned the parachute, tied the bank bag full of twenty-dollar bills to himself, lowered the rear stairs and, somewhere north of Portland, jumped into the night, never to be seen again. Although the FBI followed thousands of leads, this case has never been solved. As we approach the 49th anniversary, the mystery surrounding the whereabouts of Cooper has captivated a nation and continued to remain a pop culture obsession – inspiring songs, movies, tv shows and books. With over 7,500 hours investigating this mystery including analyzing evidence, interviewing witnesses, reading 20,000+ pages of FBI case files and exploring important locations, top D.B. Cooper expert, Eric Ulis, believes he’s found the true location where Cooper landed during his daring dive. In “The Final Hunt For D.B. Cooper,” he and his assembled team of specialists will head to the untouched Washington backcountry to hunt for missing evidence Cooper may have left behind. In addition, armed with new leads regarding the identity of Cooper, Eric works closely with a retired FBI agent as they set their sights on a living person of interest who could very well be the infamous D.B. Cooper.

Additional enigmas investigated as part of “History’s Greatest Mysteries” include a 108-year-old box filled with the investigative notes of Lord Mersey, the man tasked with leading the official inquiry into the sinking of the Titanic in “Titanic’s Lost Evidence” and in “Roswell: First Witness” a personal diary found in the belongings of Major Jesse Marcel, the first person to investigate the wreckage in Roswell, NM believed to contain coded clues to what really happened. Also in “The Escape of John Wilkes Booth” investigators now have access to 60 boxes of personal materials including marriage certificates and what is believed to be his will and, for the first time, will execute facial recognition as well as DNA testing to provide intel as to whether he died in a fire following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln or if he faked his death as many believed. Lastly, considered one of the most famous expeditions of the 20th century, Sir Ernest Shackleton and 27 men set sail on a disastrous mission to cross Antarctica in 1914 whereupon its arrival their ship sank under the ice. Led by maritime archeologist and shipwreck expert, Mensun Bound, the expedition chronicled in “Endurance: The Hunt For Shackleton’s Ice Ship” is the result of two years of planning and over $250 million spent in cutting edge technology to locate this holy grail of shipwrecks.

The Endurance is as illustrious as the Titanic, yet it has remained lost for over a hundred years. Its final resting ground remains as one of the greatest polar mysteries. Now, the HISTORY(R) channel follows a new ground-breaking expedition heading back into the frozen seas to hunt down the last piece of the story: Shackleton’s lost ship. HISTORY GREENLIGHTS NEW COMPETITION SERIES “ASSEMBLY REQUIRED” (WORKING TITLE) STARRING AND EXECUTIVE PRODUCED BY GOLDEN GLOBE(R) WINNER TIM ALLEN

RICHARD KARN IS SET TO REUNITE WITH ALLEN AS SERIES HOST AND EXECUTIVE PRODUCER

New York, NY – August 25, 2020 – HISTORY announces a 10-episode order of the nonfiction series “Assembly Required” (working title) starring and executive produced by Golden Globe(R) winner Tim Allen (“Last Man Standing,” “Home Improvement”). Allen is set to reunite with Richard Karn (“Pen15,” “Home Improvement”) who will serve as host and executive producer. In this new competition series, Tim and Richard are sounding the call for those with a can-do attitude to take back their sense of purpose and awaken their inner builder.

“Assembly Required” (working title) will spotlight the best and brightest builders from across the country, at their home workshops, as they compete to breathe new life into everyday household items in desperate need of fixing. This new series will push each contestant to their limits while testing their ability and ingenuity to not only rebuild it but to build it better. In each episode, Allen and Karn will also dive into the unique history around these items to celebrate the men and women who crafted them, and the techniques used. “Assembly Required” (working title) is slated to premiere in 2021 on HISTORY.

“Let’s face it — we’re living in a throwaway society,” said Tim Allen. “We buy, break, replace… rinse and repeat. Whatever happened to repair and rebuild? There are some people who unfriend, unfollow and dispose of anything that offends, annoys or breaks – so I’ve created a show to remind people of the satisfaction and pride that comes from rebuilding something on their own. And who better to join me than my buddy from the old Tool Time days – Richard Karn! Now we’re talking More Power! Albert Einstein once said, ‘I’m not a genius, I’m just passionately curious.’ Well, let’s get curious! Even a chimpanzee would at least show interest, right? Wait – I think I just came up with another idea for the show! R-R-R!”

“Our history is defined by the innovations of ordinary dreamers creating extraordinary things, from Thomas Edison’s light bulb to the Wright brothers’ first flight,” said Eli Lehrer, Executive Vice President and General Manager for HISTORY. “We look forward to partnering with Tim and Richard, America’s beloved duo, as they challenge a new wave of skilled individuals to think out-of-the-box to build upon the innovations of those before them. We hope this series will inspire viewers to think twice about throwing out that old item, roll up their sleeves and rebuild it better.”

Produced by Wheelhouse Entertainment’s Spoke Studios, ITV America and Boxing Cat Entertainment, this unique series also engineers a new model of partnership among the network, production and brands. In a one-of-a-kind collaboration for “Assembly Required,” (working title) powered by Wheelhouse’s marketing arm, Wheelhouse Labs, production will work closely with HISTORY’s advertising sales team in a joint effort to invite and secure brands that want to ally with the new Allen-starring series.

“Assembly Required” (working title) is produced for HISTORY by Spoke Studios, ITV America and Boxing Cat Entertainment. Joining Allen and Karn as executive producers are Brent Montgomery, Ed Simpson, Joe Weinstock, Will Nothacker, Simon Thomas, Vince Cariati and Katherine D. Fox. Eli Lehrer, Mary E. Donahue and Max Micallef serve as executive producers for HISTORY.

MINISERIES EXECUTIVE PRODUCED BY APPIAN WAY’S LEONARDO DICAPRIO AND JENNIFER DAVISSON

New York, NY – May 7, 2020 – HISTORY announced today a slate of premium historical programming, including a documentary series with President Bill Clinton that will explore the history of the American presidency and the struggle for a more perfect union. In addition, the network will continue to expand its partnerships with Appian Way, RadicalMedia and Pulitzer Prize(R)-winning Presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin with the greenlight of three new miniseries events, “Lincoln,” “Theodore Roosevelt,” and “The Men Who Built America 2” (working titles).

HISTORY has ordered two presidential miniseries from executive producer Goodwin coming off the heels of “Washington,” which became the #1 miniseries on all of cable in nearly three years with 2.6 million total viewers. Based upon Goodwin’s most recent book, “Leadership: In Turbulent Times,” these projects include: “Lincoln” (working title), from Nutopia and Pastimes Productions, a sweeping, multi-layered biography of perhaps the most important president in U.S. history and “Theodore Roosevelt” (working title), executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio from RadicalMedia, Appian Way Productions and Pastimes Productions, which will provide a panoramic portrait of the first modern President of the United States. These presidential series are in addition to the previously announced six-hour miniseries event, “Grant,” executive produced by Pulitzer Prize(R)-winning author Ron Chernow, Jennifer Davisson, DiCaprio and RadicalMedia, in association with global content leader Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF.A, LGF.B) and directed by Malcolm Venville, which will premiere Memorial Day airing over three consecutive nights beginning on Sunday, May 25 at 9PM ET/PT on HISTORY.

Additionally, HISTORY has greenlit the second installment of its hit miniseries “The Men Who Built America 2” (working title), from Appian Way Productions and Stephen David Entertainment. Executive produced by DiCaprio, the three-part miniseries will profile titans such as Du Pont, Boeing, Chrysler and JP Morgan as their innovations created entirely new industries at a time when the country was in peril.

“HISTORY is doubling down on its commitment to invest in premium historical programming that showcases the compelling stories of those who have shaped our nation,” said Eli Lehrer, Executive Vice President and General Manager for HISTORY. “We are truly honored to grow our partnerships with present-day icons like President Clinton, Leo and Doris to utilize their unique insider perspectives to help bring these incredible stories to life.”

Upcoming programming slate includes the following:
“Lincoln” (working title) – 3 x 120 min
Executive produced by Doris Kearns Goodwin, one of the world’s foremost Abraham Lincoln experts, the three-part premium miniseries event “Lincoln” (working title) will be a sweeping, multi-layered biography of perhaps the most important president in U.S. history, the man of remarkable character who led the country during its bloodiest war and greatest crisis. From Lincoln’s impoverished childhood to his days as a young prairie lawyer and budding politician, through his unlikely election to the presidency and eventual assassination, the miniseries will offer surprising insights into a man most Americans think they know. The miniseries will weave together premium dramatic live action sequences and compelling expert interviews with a rich historical archive of rare photographs, prints, and original documents to provide a resonant, compelling and contemporary understanding of the President who saved the nation.

“Lincoln” (working title) is produced for HISTORY by Nutopia with Jane Root and Ben Goold serving as executive producers. Doris Kearns Goodwin and Beth Laski serve as executive producers for Pastimes Productions. Eli Lehrer, Mary E. Donahue and Jennifer Wagman are executive producers for HISTORY.

The two-part premium miniseries event on Theodore Roosevelt, the first modern President of the United States, will provide a rich, panoramic biography weaving Roosevelt’s captivating personal story while revealing little-known truths behind his expansive curiosity, restless spirit and the profound, lasting impact he has had on the country. Known as a Progressive reformer, Roosevelt was a man of fascinating contradictions: a passionate conservationist who also hunted; a friend and supporter of the common man, who also worked closely with Wall Street and robber barons; a scion of an elite family who yearned to be a cowboy. This miniseries will chart Roosevelt’s riveting journey and timely story, using premium dramatic live action sequences, his many writings, as well as rich archival sources and expert interviews.

“Theodore Roosevelt” (working title) is produced for HISTORY by RadicalMedia. Jon Kamen and Dave Sirulnick serve as executive producers for RadicalMedia. Doris Kearns Goodwin and Beth Laski serve as executive producers for Pastimes Productions. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson serve as executive producers for Appian Way Productions. The Great Depression ravaged not only the economy, but also the American way of life. Out of that rubble, this new age of robber barons emerges to once again help lift America to new heights. From revolutionizing the automobile and erecting monuments and skyscrapers, to conquering human flight and leading the country to victory in World War II, they show that fortune favors the bold and together they not only resurrect the nation in a time of need, but ultimately band together to help defeat our country’s greatest enemy.

“The Men Who Built America 2” (working title) is produced for HISTORY by Stephen David Entertainment, a Banijay Group Company. Stephen David, Tim Kelly and Joey Allen serve as executive producers for Stephen David Entertainment. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson serve as executive producers for Appian Way Productions. NEW MINISERIES IS EXECUTIVE PRODUCED BY APPIAN WAY’S LEONARDO DICAPRIO AND JENNIFER DAVISSON, PULITZER PRIZE(R)-WINNING AUTHOR RON CHERNOW AND RADICALMEDIA IN ASSOCIATION WITH LIONSGATE TELEVISION

New York, NY – April 22, 2020 – HISTORY announced today that its six-hour miniseries event, “Grant,” executive produced by Pulitzer Prize-winning author and biographer Ron Chernow and Appian Way’s Jennifer Davisson and Leonardo DiCaprio and produced by RadicalMedia in association with global content leader Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF.A, LGF.B) will premiere Memorial Day and air over three consecutive nights beginning Monday, May 25 at 9PM ET/PT on HISTORY. The television event will chronicle the life of one of the most complex and underappreciated generals and presidents in U.S. history – Ulysses S. Grant. The network has released the first epic trailer: Click Here For Official Trailer
“Ulysses S. Grant is one of our most brilliant, yet misunderstood presidents and HISTORY is committed to telling the compelling stories, like his, of those who have shaped our great nation,” said Eli Lehrer, Executive Vice President and General Manager for HISTORY. “This is an important part of American history that deserves to be told and we look forward to delivering our latest premium core history documentary series to our audience.”
At the time of his death, Ulysses S. Grant was the most famous man in the world and stood alongside men like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in the pantheon of American heroes. However, today Grant is largely forgotten, his rightful legacy tarnished by a fog of myth, rumor and falsehood. The three-night miniseries event, “Grant,” tells the remarkable and quintessentially American story of a humble man who overcomes incredible obstacles, rises to the highest ranks of power and saves the nation not once, but twice. With a seamless blend of dramatic scenes, expert commentary and beautifully enhanced archival imagery, this series uncovers the true legacy of the unlikely hero who led the nation during its greatest tests: The Civil War and then Reconstruction – the herculean task of reconciling the North and the South. During this time, Grant acted as a pillar of strength when our country suffered its greatest-ever loss of American life. One of the most courageous and unexpected initiatives of Grant’s presidency was protecting the right to vote for the four million formerly enslaved people freed at the end of the war in the face of violent and widespread resistance. “Grant” features on-camera interviews with top experts in the field including Ron Chernow, retired United States Army General and former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director David Petraeus, acclaimed author and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates and professor of English at West Point Elizabeth Samet to name a few.
“Grant” is the second premium presidential miniseries from HISTORY and will air off the heels of “Washington,” which became the #1 miniseries on all of cable in nearly three years with 2.6 million total viewers.
“Grant” is produced for HISTORY(R) by Appian Way Productions and RadicalMedia in association with Lionsgate Television.
