LOS ANGELES, CA (July 21, 2022) – Extending its long-standing commitment to education and mentorship, The HISTORY(R) Channel/A+E Networks(R) has partnered with the Roybal Film and Television Production Magnet Fund, which was established by George Clooney, Grant Heslov and Creative Artists Agency’s Bryan Lourd to support the Roybal Film and Television Production Magnet a specialized academy founded in 2021 by the trio and a coalition of leaders to drive transformational change across the entertainment industry for students from underserved communities. The school is set to welcome its inaugural class in the fall.

In addition, Paul Buccieri, President and Chairman of A+E Networks Group, has joined the Roybal Advisory Board and will work alongside board members George Clooney, Grant Heslov, Bryan Lourd, Kerry Washington, Eva Longoria, Mindy Kaling, Don Cheadle, Nicole Avant, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Jim Gianopulos.

As part of the multi-year partnership, The HISTORY Channel/A+E Networks will provide classroom resources and innovative curriculum developed to meet the standards prescribed by the state of California and the University of California system, plus offer students access to special screenings and guest speakers, including distinguished historians. Working in collaboration with the Roybal Film and Television Production Magnet Fund and the school, the company will also develop learning sessions led by A+E Networks creatives and company leaders with expertise in a range of behind-the-camera roles, helping to expand and amplify students’ access to practical skill-based learning.

The HISTORY Channel/A+E Networks’ decades-long engagement with educational and mentorship programs includes providing more than 120,000 educators across the country with curriculum materials and resources, as well as granting scholarships and mentorship opportunities, with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. “We welcome Paul and his shared commitment to the Boards’ mission. With Paul and the support of The History Channel, we are able accelerate our collective impact on Roybal’s students,” said Lourd. “We look forward to other individuals and companies joining our efforts.”

Overseen by Principal Blanca Cruz, the Roybal Film and Television Production Magnet will provide Los Angeles Unified teachers with access to renowned storytellers, along with industry professionals and experts, and support students with a robust academic education and practical training, providing a foundational understanding of the media and entertainment industry, while preparing them for below-the-line professions. The magnet will start with ninth- and 10th-grade students and include grades 11 and 12 over the next two years, with potential opportunity to expand the pilot program to more schools throughout the Los Angeles area.

June 13, 2022 – New York, NY – The HISTORY Channel will air a special encore presentation of the network’s six-hour definitive original documentary, “Watergate,” from Academy Award(R) -winning director Charles Ferguson (“Inside Job”) on Friday, June 17 at 6pm ET/PT, on the 50th anniversary of the infamous break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in 1972.

“Watergate” chronicles one of the biggest criminal conspiracies in modern politics and features a roster of some of the most important media, legal and political figures from the scandal, including Carl Bernstein, Bob Woodward, John Dean, Jill Wine-Banks, Richard Ben-Veniste, and many others. The film explores many of the same issues being debated today on a national level, including executive privilege and the handling of Presidential misconduct.

“I am gratified that History Channel has decided to rebroadcast my documentary WATERGATE on the 50th anniversary of the Watergate burglary. The story of the Watergate scandal is now more relevant than ever in the current era of divisive politics and attacks on America’s core democratic institutions. I hope that going forward, WATERGATE will be viewed by, and the lessons of the Watergate scandal will be learned by, every new generation of American voters,” said Ferguson.

On the night of June 17, 1972, a security guard in the Watergate office complex in Washington, DC called the police when he found a door repeatedly taped open. The police discovered five men dressed in business suits who were in the process of installing bugs and photographing documents in the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee. Thus began the most explosive scandal in American history – a scandal that brought down the Presidency of Richard M. Nixon and sent over 40 people to jail.

The events of Watergate read like a political thriller – dirty tricks, government surveillance, and sabotage … much of it secretly caught on tape. “Watergate” tells the full story of the conspiracy led by Nixon and his White House staff, and how they were brought to justice. Among the incidents covered in the series is the leaking and publication of the Pentagon Papers; the spreading of false news on behalf of the White House to destroy the candidacy of Senator Edmund Muskie, then the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1972; the revelation that Nixon secretly tape-recorded every conversation in the Oval Office; the Supreme Court fight for the tapes following subpoenas by the special prosecutor and both houses of Congress; the infamous Saturday Night Massacre, when Nixon fired special prosecutor Archibald Cox, leading to the resignations of Attorney General Elliot Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus; the House Judiciary Committee’s impeachment proceedings; and the final “smoking gun” tape which recorded Nixon conspiring to cover up White House involvement in Watergate just days after the burglary.

“Watergate” includes new interviews with journalists, senior Nixon Administration officials, members of Congress, and prosecutors. Interview subjects include the late Senator John McCain, Daniel Ellsberg, Elizabeth Holtzman, William Ruckelshaus, Dan Rather, Lesley Stahl, among others. This material is combined with existing archival material including the taped conversations recorded by Nixon and other members of his administration, footage from Congressional hearings, interviews conducted during the investigation, transcripts from criminal trials and Supreme Court arguments other legal proceedings, and written first-person accounts from people involved in the scandal.

Each week, “More Power” puts its own special twist on the story of how basic tools, from blades and batteries to magnets and lasers, evolved to do the incredible things they do today, while answering burning questions like “How does a magnet light up an entire city?” Each 30-minute episode will be themed around one tool. In Tim’s workshop and leaning on April’s expertise, viewers will learn how tools work and break down everyday machines and appliances that feature these tools – from garbage disposals and chainsaws to the pneumatic wrenches used to change a tire. With Richard’s help, viewers will learn the history behind the how and why different tools came to be, while showcasing their most inventive, impactful and, in some cases, hysterical modifications. After the shop, the team will head out to the field where the fun really begins as they test drive the big machines from Bobcat bulldozers and excavators to a guillotine shear, celebrating the skilled experts who operate them. Lastly, each week Tim will invite one highly skilled maker into his shop to participate in “Tim’s Maker Challenge,” tasking them to create crazy new builds from an automatic leaf-vacuum-rake that sucks up leaves and puts them directly into the waste bin, to a battery-powered mobile kitchen that solves everyday problems in a spectacular way — even April gets in on the action. For better or worse, a new tool will be built and tested to see if it’s a cut above the rest and embodies the series’ mission of “more power.”

An extension of the network’s popular “That Built” franchise, the three-part nonfiction series divulges surprising origin stories of the American alcohol, gambling, sex and tobacco industries and the ambitiously notorious entrepreneurs who built some of history’s biggest fortunes on the nation’s cravings. Each two-hour episode is packed with scintillating historical facts, riveting drama, expert interviews and compelling characters who operate on both sides of the law. It’s a little dangerous, a little taboo, and a lot of fun!

Throughout the course of nearly a hundred years in the 19th and 20th centuries, the fight over alcohol, gambling, sex, and tobacco defines the American cultural experience and helps the country come of age. It is a time when condoms are illegal, smoking is pervasive, and alcohol is made illegal then legalized again; the great debate rages between the freedom to indulge and protection from the chaos of debauchery. From the 1860s to the 1930s and beyond, this series looks at innovators like Jasper “Jack” Daniel, Adolphus Busch, Buck Duke, Julius Schmid, Stephanie St. Clair and others who bring these pleasures out of the shadows and into the mainstream to build some of the biggest commercial empires in American history. Their successes and failures also lay the groundwork for the state lottery system, the Sexual Revolution and Sin City itself.

The June 12th premiere episode of “The Booze, Bets and Sex That Built America” starts in Tennessee where orphan Jasper “Jack” Daniel, taken in by a local farmer and preacher, works side by side with a former enslaved person in distilling a clear, flavorless corn-based alcohol known today as American whiskey. In St. Louis, a German immigrant named Adolphus Busch takes over his father-in-law’s struggling brewery and sets out to create a better-tasting beer, eventually known as Budweiser. Meanwhile, Buck Duke chases a vision of selling tobacco in every tobacco store, drugstore and dry goods shop across America on his way to becoming the third richest person in the country, with a novel product called… the cigarette. And, in New York City, sausage factory worker Julius Schmid begins revolutionizing contraception in America by using his company’s natural casings to make condoms, which he must sell underground because they’re illegal. The remaining two episodes highlight Stephanie St. Clair’s story of operating an illegal “numbers” game in her neighborhood of Harlem where it catches the attention of the New York Mafia and goes on to inspire the creation of the state lottery system; Billy Wilkerson who sets out to build a “luxury resort casino” that redefines casinos and creates “The Strip” in Las Vegas; unemployed war veteran Hugh Hefner who creates a new alluring magazine unlike anything the world has ever seen.

In 1866 as the United States recovered from the bloody aftermath of the Civil War, Congress passed the Army Reorganization Act, authorizing the creation of six, all-Black peacetime regiments. These brave men, who would later become known as the Buffalo Soldiers, fought admirably for decades to support the Nation’s expansion in the West through tasks that included protecting settlers and national parks, building roads and infrastructures, and participating in significant military efforts, while also helping to capture cattle rustlers, thieves, and combat other threats. However, the Buffalo Soldiers were fighting for more than just national expansion and victory on the battlefield. Simultaneously, they were fighting for equality and justice at home. Featuring interviews from military experts, historians and descendants of the Buffalo Soldiers and coupled with historic photography, original illustrations, and never-before-seen documents, “Black Patriots: Buffalo Soldiers” takes an in depth look at an important time in American history and spotlights the remarkable soldiers who played a pivotal role in shaping and protecting the Nation.

The History(R) Channel will also be creating educational resources for schools to learn more about the history of the Buffalo Soldiers.

No gimmicks. “Alone” is the ultimate test of human will. From the ultimate test to a very painful test, “Kings of Pain” returns with wildlife biologist Adam Thorn and professional animal handler “Caveman” Rob Alleva as they continue their scientific journey to get bitten and stung by some of the most dangerous animals and vicious stinging insects in the world – from an Arizona bark scorpion to a Mexican beaded lizard – to create history’s complete and comprehensive guide to pain that will ultimately help save lives.

Season nine of “Alone” sets survivalists in a location with one of the harshest weather conditions yet. Enduring wet, snowy, merciless conditions, survivalists’ building ingenuity, mental willpower and overall wilderness skills are put to the test as they must build their own shelters, forage their own food, and overcome numerous obstacles and dangerous predators in hopes of being the last person standing.

Additionally, season nine will continue to captivate audiences with the introduction of two new original digital content series, “The Ride Back” (working title) and “Shelter from the Storm” (working title). In these two series, fans will get exclusive access to never-before-seen moments through enhanced episodes on VOD and digital playlists available only on The HISTORY Channel’s official website and apps. “The Ride Back” (wt) will provide an extended look at the raw emotions each survivalist experienced during their journeys before deciding to tap out, from intimate camera conversations to unfiltered moments right before leaving the isolation, to heartfelt interviews and footage of their journey to home base where it all began. On a mission to test as many animals as possible and continue to build upon entomologist Dr. Justin O. Schmidt’s 1983 sting pain index, this new season of “Kings of Pain” captures Thorn and Alleva testing both native and non-native species from all around the world from a centralized location in southern California to maximize their time. Following in the footsteps of season one, each one-hour episode chronicles both men as they safely extract the animals and execute the bite or sting on each other. They then rank their average pain results including intensity, duration and damage and provide personal footage of the shocking aftermath and side effects. Onsite medic and venom expert, Dr. Ben Abo returns to monitor their health and well-being over more than two dozen stings and bites and to describe to viewers exactly what physical and physiological reactions are occurring within their bodies. Along this journey, viewers also learn about the history of each animal and its often-uncomfortable relationship with humans.
