Burbank, CA (April 15, 2021) – Cartoon Network Studios (CNS) unveiled today Cartoon Cartoons, the next evolution of its prolific animated shorts program, signaling the studio’s largest commitment to animated shorts production to date. Cartoon Cartoons will be the studio’s first dedicated shorts program in over a decade with a mission to innovate the art of animated storytelling, showcase diverse stories, discover new voices and mentor the next generation of animators. I am so grateful to the producers serving on our Creative Council and our partner organizations for their commitment to make Cartoon Cartoons a successful and creatively rewarding endeavor.”

The initial CNS shorts program began in 1995 as World Premiere Toons and thrived as a creative incubator for artists to freely develop and create animated content. Through its existence, the program served as a launch pad for a number of innovative artists and highly successful award-winning series such as Dexter’s Laboratory (Genndy Tartakovsky), The Powerpuff Girls (Craig McCracken), Chowder (C.H. Greenblatt), Regular Show (J.G. Quintel) and Steven Universe (Rebecca Sugar).

As they explore, develop and refine their ideas, artists will receive focused studio support from a dedicated production team and veteran producer mentorship. Finished shorts have the potential to be globally distributed by WarnerMedia across a variety of platforms including linear broadcast through Cartoon Network, streaming through HBO Max, online and much more. The program will be open to artists and producers of all experience levels from both inside and outside Cartoon Network Studios.

Cartoon Network Announces Rebrand and Expanded Programming of Newly Formed Cat-toon Network

100% Cat-themed Programming Pounces its Way onto the Network April 1

New Feline-Focused Series in Development Include Comedy, Drama and Hard News

Cat-toon Network’s Cats of the Creek

Cat-toon Network’s Meow Cats Go!

March 31, 2021 – Burbank, CA – Cartoon Network has announced a rebrand and complete overhaul of its Kids & Family programming to focus solely on cats. The announcement was made today by the cats of the newly rebranded Cat-toon Network, who are assuming the leadership from its current President of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics, Tom Ascheim.

According to the APPA National Pet Owners Survey by the American Pet Products Association, there are approximately 85 million pet owners in the U.S. and a recent survey shows that cats are a preferred pet, with more than 42 million living in U.S. households. Naturally, watching breeds like the laidback American Shorthair to the prissy Siamese is the purr-fect form of entertainment that parents, kids and families alike are shifting their viewing habits toward.

The new Cat-toon Network launches Thursday, April 1 and kicks-off at 6:00 a.m. ET/PT with reimagined new episodes of favorite series, Cats of the Creek and Meow Cats Go! Programming will also be available on Cat-toon Network’s YouTube channel starting at 7:00 a.m. PT / 10:00 a.m. ET.

“Though Cartoon Network is the world’s most popular global animated network, in our opinion, it was figuratively ‘going to the dogs’,” meowed Beast Boy (in cat form), Gumball Watterson and Nicole Watterson, the freshly minted co-presidents, Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics. “This rebrand will put the focus on what Americans really want to see – cats in all their splendor – starring in comedy, drama, reality and even hard news programs.”

Below is a look at new Cat-toon Network series in development:

Comedy/Reality (in development)

· The Big Bang Tabby – A house of nerds gets flustered when a new redhead, way out of their league, moves in.

· De-Claws – Set in the nail salon, hardworking manicurists try to balance personal and professional demands.

· Felines – A group of lovable, quirky felines figure out how to navigate their way in the big city together, even though they only want to be left alone.

· Keeping Up with the Katdashians – An all-access peek into the glamorous lives, loves and feuds of Hollywood’s most famous kitty brood.

· Make Room for Felix – A reboot of the early TV classic starring Danny Thomas with Felix as the harried entertainer dad in a 1950s period piece family sitcom.

· Search Paw-ty – A dark satirical comedy ensues as a group of NYC hipster cats search for a missing friend.

· Tiger King Jr. – A sequel to this early Quarantine-era pop phenomenon, where the kittens get their big star turn, and the big cats take a back seat.

Drama (in development)

· Better Call Tom – What happens when the macho man from America’s favorite cat and mouse duo goes to the dark side.

· Bobcat Legal – A feline focused spinoff of the classic David E. Kelley series starring this classic breed. Features James Spader as “The Spay-der.”

· Catsession – A rich Sphynx family vies for which one of them will take over the family business.

· Game of Paws – Powerful families fight for who will ultimately rule the kingdom and sit atop the Iron Litterbox.

· Love-Cat Country – Southern gothic horror, with a supernatural kitty spin.

· Meowland – A CIA tabby globetrots to keep America safe from extremists.

News (in development)

· Abyssinian Cooper 360 – News and views from one of catdom’s most high-class breeds.

· Cats & Friends – The cable news morning show with all of the top stories of the day that will be the talk of the litter box… for America’s oldest cat demo.

And, something for the kids! (in development)

· Catnip’d – In the tradition of prank shows like Punk’d, what happens when A-list feline stars get secretly spiced with some ‘nip. Hilarity and hallucinations ensue.

· Meowalorian – Feline bounty hunters at the edge of the galaxy.

· PUSS15 – The heart and hilarity and indignities of awkward adolescence, as seen through lives of two high school kittens.

New series greenlights to reach all kids and families include:

Ben 10 specials – Produced by Man of Action (Big Hero 6, Generator Rex), three 44-minute specials based on the hit Cartoon Network series Ben 10 are set to premiere in April 2021. The first, Ben 10,010, takes place in the future when a disillusioned Ben 10000 is called out of retirement to recruit his 10-year-old version from the past to work together to save a future under siege. The second special, Ben Gen 10 follows Ben as he meets a young Generator Rex on the run from a hostile Providence working through a series of misunderstandings in order to save the world from being infected with alien DNA. In the final installment, Alien X-Tinction, the Tennysons are attacked by a villainous, dimension-hopping Omni-alien, and soon meet a parallel universe version of Max who opens the door to hosting multiple Bens and Gwens, forming an alien hero army to combat this threat.

Craig of the Creek – Created by Steven Universe writers Matt Burnett and Ben Levin, season four of the Emmy-, GLAAD- and NAACP Image Award-nominated series is back and filled with new adventures as Craig and his friends embark on an exciting quest to find one of the Creek’s greatest treasures – meeting new friends and exploring new places along the way.

Gremlins S2 – A season two greenlight of this animated prequel to the beloved film franchise doubles down on the yet-to-be-aired series from Warner Bros. Animation and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television. The first season, Gremlins: The Secrets of the Mogwai, is currently in production and features a star-studded voice cast including Izaac Wang, Ming-Na Wen, BD Wong, James Hong, A.J. LoCascio, Gabrielle Green, and Matthew Rhys.

Infinity Train: Book Four – Two old friends must explore the inner puzzles of the Infinity Train – and their relationship – in order to return home, together. Infinity Train: Book Four is created by Owen Dennis and produced by Cartoon Network Studios.

Jade Armor – In production with TeamTO and featuring a talented all-female creative team, Jade Armor centers around the martial arts-loving Lan Jun, an unlikely teenage heroine who must learn the ancient secrets of her family and uncover the unexpected, all while navigating life as a teen.

Total Drama Island – The world’s most hilarious reality show is back and better than ever with two new seasons. With no parents, no phones, and no mercy, the new animated series will introduce an updated cast of quirky, iconic teen contestants as they face hardcore competition, brutal eliminations, and more drama than ever before. Total Drama Island is produced by Fresh TV for Cartoon Network and HBO Max, and distributed internationally by CAKE.

Victor and Valentino – In the third season, there’s something sinister unfolding in Monte Macabre, and Victor and Valentino plan to sniff it out before it’s too late. Along the way, the boys will return to the Underworld for Dia de Muertos, hang out with the Reynas of Los Angeles for a Mariachi musical, and mark Halloween with a harrowing two-part spooktacular special. The series is created by Diego Molano and produced by Cartoon Network Studios.

New projects in development for kids and families include:

The Amazing World of Gumball Movie (working title) – Produced out of EMEA, the upcoming TV movie is based on the hit Cartoon Network series The Amazing World of Gumball, which follows the hilarious misadventures of Gumball Watterson and his goldfish best friend, Darwin.

Family Mash-Up (working title) – A modern-day The Brady Bunch meets Pitch Perfect when a single mom and three sons and a single dad with three daughters fall in love and get married despite their kids being in two fiercely competing acapella groups. The music-filled live-action comedy is created by Michael Poryes (Hannah Montana, That’s So Raven).

Gross Girls – From Cartoon Network Studios with producers Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation) and Naomi Scott (Other People) alongside creators Daniela Hamilton and Scott Yacyshyn, Gross Girls is a smart, sophisticated animated comedy about Chuck and Zoey, two best friends trying to survive middle school without losing any of their trademark stinky, hairy, mad science-y grossness. In spite of jerky brothers, judgey classmates, and “common decency,” these two girls boost each other up and encourage each other to be 100% themselves. Because with the right best friend, everything is an adventure…even puberty.

Teen Titans Go! The Night Begins to Shine – In this spinoff series of the Cartoon Network smash hit Teen Titans Go!, Robin, Raven, Cyborg, Beast Boy and Starfire journey back to the world of Night Begins to Shine when the musical land falls victim to a sinister new threat. Together the Titans must protect the only key to the world’s salvation, a magical mixtape. Teen Titans Go! Night Begins to Shine is produced by Warner Bros. Animation.

Tweety Mysteries (working title) – Tweety Mysteries is a hybrid live-action/animated adventure from Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Bros. Television that follows a curious tween investigative journalist and podcaster named Sydney and her sidekick Tweety bird. Working together the pair must solve various local mysteries in their small, quirky Washington state town.

Today’s programming announcements join the previously announced two-season greenlight of Tiny Toons Looniversity from Warner Bros. Animation, Amblin Television and returning executive producer Steven Spielberg, as well as the inclusive family co-viewing slate that includes Genndy Tartakovsky’s supernatural family series Unicorn: Warriors Eternal. Cartoon Network will also launch weekend family movie nights with blockbuster features including Gremlins, Happy Feet, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Shazam!, Back to the Future and more.

Genndy Tartakovsky’s Supernatural Animated-Action Series Unicorn: Warriors Eternal Ordered for HBO Max and Cartoon Network

Unique Storytelling and Contrasting Genres Establish Inclusive Series for All Ages

HBO Max and Cartoon Network have greenlit Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, a unique, animated-action series helmed by Emmy(R) Award-winning creator Genndy Tartakovsky. Inspired by myths and lore from across the globe, the show will follow a team of ancient teen heroes as they work together to protect the world from an unforeseen omen. With themes of the supernatural weaved with adventure, the series captures fun yet mysterious character-based storytelling for kids, teens and parents alike. Produced by Cartoon Network Studios, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal is currently in production for HBO Max and Cartoon Network.

Unicorn: Warriors Eternal follows a team of ancient heroes protecting the world from an ominous force. Throughout history, unicorns have symbolized the virtuous, appearing to ensure that goodness reigns. When the reawakening of our heroes comes too early, they find themselves in the bodies of teenagers. Damaged as a result, their memories of who they are and the history of the unicorn over the centuries have been lost, with some of their magical abilities weakened and fragmented. Not only do they have to protect the world against the prevailing darkness, they have to do it while navigating the unexpected laughs and humor that come with teen angst and emotions.

“Welcoming Genndy back to Cartoon Network, and now HBO Max was the perfect opportunity to introduce a new generation of fans to his visionary work and this one-of-a-kind series that offers something for everyone in the family,” said Tom Ascheim, President, Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics (GKYAC). “Genndy is a deeply respected creator whose visceral storytelling has inspired our audience and the artist community. We are honored to go on this next epic adventure with him.”

Added Tartakovsky: “Twenty-five years ago Dexter’s Laboratory was Cartoon Network’s first original series. It launched an incredible creative relationship that continued to prosper throughout the years. Today, I am so proud and honored to be able to create an animated series for HBO Max and Cartoon Network, and start a new relationship, fostering more bold and original storytelling. Unicorn: Warriors Eternal is going to be crazy cool and I can’t wait for people to see it!”

Critically acclaimed and multiple Emmy(R) Award-winning Tartakovsky has created other projects within the Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics (GKYAC) portfolio, including Adult Swim’s Emmy(R) Award-winning Primal and Samurai Jack, and other notable Cartoon Network legacy series including Dexter’s Laboratory and Sym-Bionic Titan. Tartakovsky also directed the original Star Wars: Clone Wars series. In 2012, he made his feature directorial debut with Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania and continued to direct its next two sequels, Hotel Transylvania 2 and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation.
