Apple lands “The Velvet Underground” from Academy Award-nominated director Todd Haynes

Apple has landed the rights to “The Velvet Underground,” a new feature documentary from Academy Award-nominated director Todd Haynes (“Carol,” “Far From Heaven,” “I’m Not There”) and Polygram Entertainment, produced by Motto Pictures and Killer Films in association with Federal Films.

The Velvet Underground created a new sound that changed the world of music, cementing its place as one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most revered bands. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Todd Haynes, “The Velvet Underground” shows just how the group became a cultural touchstone representing a range of contradictions: the band is both of their time, yet timeless; literary yet realistic; rooted in high art and street culture.

The Apple Original film features in-depth interviews with the key players of that time combined with a treasure trove of never before seen performances and a rich collection of recordings, Warhol films, and other experimental art that creates an immersive experience into what founding member John Cale describes as the band’s creative ethos: “how to be elegant and how to be brutal.”

“The Velvet Underground” is produced by Polygram Entertainment in association with Federal Films, a Motto Pictures and Killer Films production. Haynes directs and serves as producer. The film is produced by Christine Vachon, Julie Goldman, Christopher Clements, Carolyn Hepburn and David Blackman.

The new documentary will join acclaimed Apple Original unscripted feature films including the critically acclaimed “Fireball: Visitors From Darker Worlds,” from award-winning directors Werner Herzog and Clive Oppenheimer; 2020 Sundance US Grand Jury Prize award-winning documentary “Boys State”; five-time Emmy Award-nominated “Beastie Boys Story”; “Dads,” from director Bryce Dallas Howard; and the Emmy Award-nominated, Cinema for Peace International Green Film Award-winning and Critics’ Choice Documentary Award-nominated film “The Elephant Queen.”

Apple orders “The Supermodels,” a documentary event series exploring the unprecedented and iconic careers of Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington

New docuseries hailing from Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Documentaries to be directed by two-time Academy Award winner Barbara Kopple

Apple TV+ has ordered “The Supermodels,” an unparalleled event docuseries that will feature exclusive access to and interviews with Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington, who will revisit their iconic modeling careers and collective disruption of the ’90s fashion scene, which continues to reverberate today. Hailing from Imagine Documentaries, the project will be directed and executive produced by two-time Academy Award winner Barbara Kopple (“Harlan County, USA,” “American Dream,” “Shut Up and Sing”), and executive produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, along with Campbell, Crawford, Evangelista and Turlington, who have joined in an unprecedented partnership on the series.

“The Supermodels” travels back to the 1980s, when four women from different corners of the world united in New York. Already forces in their own right, the gravitas they achieved by coming together transcended the industry itself. Their prestige was so extraordinary that it enabled the four to supersede the brands they showcased, making the names Naomi, Cindy, Linda and Christy as prominent as the designers who styled them. Today, the four supermodels remain on the frontlines of culture through activism, philanthropy and business prowess. As the fashion industry continues to redefine itself – and women’s roles within it – this is the ultimate story of power and how four women came together to claim it, paving the way for those to follow.

The docuseries, which is produced under Apple’s exclusive first-look agreement with Imagine Documentaries, will also be executive produced by Sara Bernstein and Justin Wilkes.

“The Supermodels” will join Apple’s expanding offering of acclaimed, award-winning documentaries and docuseries, including the soon-to-premiere “Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You”; “Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry,” directed by award-winning filmmaker R.J. Cutler; five-time Emmy Award-nominated “Beastie Boys Story”; Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize Award-winning “Boys State”; Emmy Award-nominated series “Home”; and “Dads,” a heartfelt documentary which is also from Imagine Documentaries and is now streaming globally on Apple TV+.

Apple TV+ is available on the Apple TV app on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod touch, Mac, select Samsung and LG smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV and Roku devices, as well as at tv.apple.com, for $4.99 per month with a seven-day free trial. Apple Original Films to premiere “Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You” documentary, Friday, October 23 on Apple TV+

Bruce Springsteen’s new studio album with the E Street Band, “Letter To You,” arrives the same day

Bruce Springsteen fans around the world will get a behind-the-scenes look at the iconic artist’s creative process in the documentary feature film, “Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You,” from Apple Original Films, premiering Friday, October 23 exclusively on Apple TV+. The feature-length vérité documentary arrives the same day as Springsteen’s new album “Letter To You,” and features full performances from the E Street Band, in-studio footage, never-before-seen archival material, and a deeper look into “Letter To You” from Springsteen himself.

“Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You” captures Springsteen recording “Letter To You” live with the full E Street Band, and includes final take performances of 10 originals from the new record. Written by Springsteen and directed by his frequent collaborator Thom Zimny (“Western Stars,” “The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash,” “Springsteen on Broadway”), the film is a tribute to the E Street Band, to rock music itself, and to the role it has played in Springsteen’s life.

“Letter To You” is Springsteen’s first studio album recorded live and together with the E Street Band since 1984’s “Born In The U.S.A.” Both the album and companion documentary include recently written Springsteen songs side by side with legendary but previously unreleased compositions from the 1970s. Throughout the documentary, Springsteen shares his thoughts and feelings behind “Letter To You,” and puts the new music into the context of his entire body of work. In that way, it’s the next piece in the autobiographical series that began with the memoir “Born to Run,” continued with “Springsteen on Broadway” and advanced through his film “Western Stars.”

Apple Original Films’ “Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You” is produced by Jon Landau and Zimny and co-produced by Barbara Carr, with Springsteen serving as executive producer. Fans can pre-add “Letter To You” on Apple Music and receive a notification when the album is released.

“Oprah’s Book Club” episode “Isabel Wilkerson: Caste” to premiere for free on Friday, October 2

“The Oprah Conversation: Caste” two-part episode to premiere on Friday, October 9

To spotlight her most important Book Club selection ever, Oprah Winfrey hosts in-depth conversations with Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and bestselling author Isabel Wilkerson about her latest book, “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents,” exclusively on Apple TV+.

On Friday, October 2, “Oprah’s Book Club” will feature Winfrey speaking with Wilkerson for a detailed discussion around the history the book explores. Calling the book “a must-read for all of humanity,” Winfrey asks Wilkerson what compelled her to write it and why we need a new language for race. The episode will be available for free on Apple TV+.

Then on Friday, October 9, “The Oprah Conversation” dives in deeper to discuss the themes of the book in a two-part episode on Apple TV+, as Winfrey and Wilkerson come together for an inspiring conversation about truth, reflection and hope for humanity. In “Caste: Part 1,” Winfrey, Wilkerson and a panel of readers discuss the concept that America is built on a caste system. “Caste: Part 2” continues the conversation as readers share stories of how the themes explored in Wilkerson’s book resonate with their lives and experiences.

To accompany the “Oprah’s Book Club” episode, Apple Books and Oprah’s Book Club present “Read With Us: Caste, An Oprah’s Book Club Discussion Guide,” available for free on Apple Books. The discussion guide includes an introductory letter from Oprah herself, an inspiring Q&A with Isabel Wilkerson, questions to prompt self-reflection and important discussions, and recommended reads for anyone wanting to learn more about the topics and history explored in “Caste.”

Readers who want to go even deeper into the world of the book can listen to the newly launched “Oprah’s Book Club” podcast, available now for free on Apple Podcasts. This eight-episode series explores the eight pillars of caste with Wilkerson.

In partnership with Apple, the Oprah’s Book Club selection, “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents,” is available now on Apple Books in both ebook and audiobook formats, and customers can enjoy it across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and CarPlay.

About “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” (Penguin Random House)

Drawing parallels between the caste systems of America, India and Nazi Germany, Wilkerson outlines a revolutionary framework for understanding how caste plays out across civilizations, both historically and today. Backed by years of research, she identifies eight ideological pillars that underlie all caste systems. Using riveting stories from the lives of Martin Luther King Jr., baseball’s Satchel Paige, an ordinary single father and his toddler son, and many others, Wilkerson shows how the insidious undertow of caste is experienced by each of us every day. She documents how the Nazis studied the racial systems in America to plan their debasement of the Jews; she discusses why the cruel logic of caste requires that there be a bottom rung for those in the middle to measure themselves against; she writes about the surprising health costs of caste, in depression and life expectancy, and the effects of this hierarchy on our culture and politics. Finally, she points forward to ways America can move beyond the artificial and destructive separations of human divisions, toward hope in our common humanity.

Publisher Penguin Random House calls “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” a masterful portrait of the unspoken caste system that has shaped America. Through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, Wilkerson explores how America has been defined by a rigid hierarchy of human rankings throughout its history and even today.
