AMAZON STUDIOS PICKS UP FAN FAVORITE SCI-FI SERIES “THE EXPANSE” FOR SIXTH AND FINAL SEASON

The season renewal comes ahead of the series’ 5th season, which will debut December 16 on Amazon Prime Video

CULVER CITY, Calif., November 24, 2020 – Amazon Studios today announced it has ordered a sixth and final season of the fan-favorite Amazon Original series The Expanse, based on James S.A. Corey’s best-selling books. Renewal of The Expanse for a final season comes in advance of the anticipated fifth season, which will premiere December 16th on Amazon Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, Co-CEOs and Co-Founders of Alcon Television Group, and Executive Producers of The Expanse, said: “From the moment we committed to bringing this show to life up until this final season, we have worked tirelessly to honor the vision of the writers. We have prided ourselves on having one of the most diverse casts on television and giving a platform to stories that matter. A special thanks to Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, the writers of both the books and series, and to Naren Shankar, the series showrunner and Executive Producer. It continues to be an honor and privilege to work with this team. We also would like to thank Amazon for their continuing support to help us tell this story in its fullest and to bring The Expanse to a global audience.”

“The dedication and artistry of everyone who helps bring The Expanse to the screen is incredible,” said Naren Shankar, Executive Producer and Showrunner, The Expanse. “Our fans are awesome, and we cannot wait to get rolling on Season Six!”

“We’d like to thank Naren, Andrew, Broderick, everyone at Alcon and the entire cast and crew of The Expanse for the hard work and love they have put into the series over these past seasons,” said Vernon Sanders, Co-Head of Television, Amazon Studios. “We’re very happy we can give the incredibly loyal and passionate fans of The Expanse the satisfying conclusion to the series that they deserve. We know they’ll love how Seasons Five and Six unfold.”

The Expanse is set in the future where humanity has colonized the solar system and the people of Earth, Mars and the Asteroid Belt have long been in opposition with one another. When the crew of the Rocinante uncovers an ancient alien technology, a vast conspiracy begins to emerge, one that will bring the solar system to the brink of war.

The Expanse is a high-action, sci-fi adventure that explores the depth of humanity against the far-spanning reaches of the known universe. The series is rooted in science and fiction while remaining a thorough and thoughtful examination of some of the most vital societal issues of our day.

The Hugo award-winning series, based on the hugely popular science fiction novels by James S.A. Corey, was developed and scripted by the Academy Award nominated writing duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby who executive produce the series alongside Naren Shankar, Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Laura Lancaster, Sharon Hall, Sean Daniel and Jason Brown of Hivemind, Daniel Abraham, Ty Franck and Dan Nowak. Shankar serves as showrunner for all seasons. The Expanse is produced by Alcon Television Group.

The Expanse series was picked up by Amazon Prime Video in 2018 for a fourth season, which released globally as an Amazon Original Series in December 2019. The much anticipated fifth season of The Expanse will debut beginning December 16th, 2020 with three episodes and will continue to debut one episode weekly through February 3, 2021.

Arlington, VA – November 18, 2020 – This December, PBS Distribution will be adding a number of compelling new programs to the PBS Documentaries Prime Video Channel, including “FRONTLINE: Documenting Hate: New American Nazis,” which takes a look at the rise of white supremacy within our country, “NOVA: Human Nature,” which explores the development of gene therapy and the discovery of CRISPR CAS-9, “AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: LBJ,” giving an authentic look at one of America’s more controversial presidents, and “MAKERS: Vol 1 & 2” exploring how women have helped shape America over the last half century. Other programs that will be streaming on the channel in December include programs from FRONTLINE, NOVA and American Masters as well as other programs from popular independent producers.

The subscription rate for the PBS Documentaries Prime Video Channel is $3.99/month with an Amazon Prime or Prime Video subscription. Every purchase helps support public television for all.

Information about each of the programs is listed below.

FRONTLINE: Documenting Hate:
New American Nazis

Premiere Date: December 3, 2020
Episodes: 1
Genre: Current Events
In the wake of the deadly anti-Semitic attack at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, “Documenting Hate: New American Nazis” investigates white supremacist groups in America – in particular, a neo-Nazi group, Atomwaffen Divison, that has actively recruited inside the U.S. military. This program shows the group’s terrorist objectives and how it gained strength after the 2017 Charlottesville rally.
NOVA: Human Nature

Premiere Date: December 3, 2020
Episodes: 1
Genre: Science
“Human Nature” follows the story of scientific developments in gene therapy, culminating in our ability to make precise edits to DNA—including human DNA. The film tells the story of the discovery of CRISPR CAS-9 editing, which has shown early promise as a cure for several debilitating or lethal genetic diseases, but also has the capability of making changes to healthy genes—raising ethical questions about whether we should be altering human DNA at all.

Through a series of discoveries beginning in the 1990s, scientists discovered CRISPR CAS-9. Found in microbial genomes as a natural defense against viruses, CRISPR sequences can be used to program cells to edit their own DNA, a revolutionary technology with the potential to change the course of human evolution. The discovery has led to new approaches to treating genetic diseases. Almost overnight, it became theoretically possible to change the unchangeable: This technology could be used to cure cancer, sickle cell disease, muscular dystrophy, and other devastating previously incurable genetic diseases. But it has also fueled a sharp debate over what constitutes a “normal” human being and whether we should ever seek to change who we are by altering our genomes—or those of our children.
AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: LBJ

Premiere Date: December 11, 2020
Episodes: 2
Genre: Biography, Documentary
“American Experience: LBJ” profiles one of the most controversial U.S. presidents, Lyndon Baines Johnson, who rose from obscurity to the pinnacle of power, only to suffer disillusionment and defeat. LBJ was one of the most astute, effective, and perplexing politicians in modern American history. An “accidental” president but a master legislator, he was determined to “out-Kennedy the Kennedys” by pushing through historic social legislation on a scale that rivaled FDR’s New Deal. A Southerner who championed civil rights, LBJ put into motion many of the programs that would continue to shape American life throughout the 1960s and 1970s, a package of reforms known as the “Great Society.” But as his authority was undermined by an increasingly unpopular commitment of U.S. forces to Vietnam, his presidency began to unravel. Opposition to the war spurred protest movements and a youthful counterculture. In 1968 he stunned the nation by announcing he would not seek reelection. A larger-than-life figure in his day, LBJ is appreciated for his vast domestic accomplishments, but his presidency continues to be overshadowed by his failure to end the war in Vietnam
MAKERS: Vol 1 & 2

Premiere Date: December 11, 2020
Seasons: 2
Episodes: 9
Genre: Biography
The first volume of “MAKERS,” made television history by telling the complete story of the women’s movement for the first time. The second volume, followed up by taking in-depth looks at women’s achievements in fields ranging from entertainment to space to politics to war. The series tells the story of how women have helped shape America over the last 50 years through one of the most sweeping social revolutions in our country’s history, in pursuit of their rights to a full and fair share of political power, economic opportunity and personal autonomy. The first volume is narrated by Meryl Streep and the second volume features narration by Leslie Mann, Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster, Alfre Woodward, Julianne Margulies and Christiane Amanpour.

In the last half-century, women have fought their way into nearly every sphere of American life, from the battlefield to the comedy club, the soundstage to the Senate. This series examines the impact of the women’s movement in and on multiple fields once largely closed to women. Through intimate interviews with trailblazing women known and unknown, viewers are given a rare glimpse – sometimes funny, sometimes sad, and always candid – of what it was like to be pioneers in their fields. Directed by some of the country’s leading independent filmmakers, this program brings to life new and unforgettable stories that every woman, man, girl and boy should know. Interviewees include: Ursula Burns, Diahann Carroll, Paula Coughlin, Glenn Close, Geena Davis, Ellen DeGeneres, Chelsea Handler, Gwen Ifill, Mae Jemison, Jane Lynch, Barbara Mikulski, Indra Nooyi, Valerie Plame, Shonda Rhimes, Joan Rivers, Pat Schroeder, Sarah Silverman, Olympia Snowe, Alfre Woodard, and many more.

Justo Gil, a young and ambitious man, moves to the prosperous and promising city of 1960s Barcelona. He is determined to be successful and as his career begins to take off, his life intersects with Carme Román, a young aspiring actress. They start a passionate love affair that will haunt them for years to come. Justo’s life also collides with Mateo Moreno, a policeman from the dreaded Social Brigade (secret police). A set of unexpected turn of events plunges Justo into a dark network of espionage, making him an informer for the Franco political police.

Looking for their place in the city, Justo, Carme and Mateo mix with greedy businessmen, young, rich revelers of the ‘gauche divine,’ unscrupulous police men, rebellious students or members of the anti-Franco resistance, and inhabitants of a boiling city that is going through an unrepeatable moment.
