STEVE MCQUEEN’S “SMALL AXE” PREMIERES NOVEMBER 20 ON AMAZON PRIME VIDEO IN THE US

Prime Video Releases Official Trailer Featuring New Footage From All Five Films, Which Will Air During the 72nd Emmy Awards Telecast

CULVER CITY, Calif. – September 20, 2020 – Amazon Prime Video announced today that Small Axe, the highly anticipated anthology series created and directed by Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen (Hunger, 12 Years A Slave), will premiere on Friday, November 20 with the first film, Mangrove starring Letitia Wright & Shaun Parkes. The four additional films will debut each Friday, including Lovers Rock (11/27) starring Micheal Ward & Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn, Education (12/4) featuring Kenyah Sandy, Alex Wheatle (12/11) with newcomer Sheyi Cole, and the final film Red, White and Blue (12/18) starring John Boyega. Prime Video, in partnership with the series commissioners, the BBC, released the official trailer today featuring new footage from all five films, which will also air during the 72nd Emmy Awards telecast.

Small Axe is an anthology comprised of five original films set from the late 1960s to the mid 1980s that tell personal stories from London’s West Indian community, whose lives have been shaped by their own force of will despite rampant racism and discrimination. This title is derived from the African proverb, “If you are the big tree, we are the small axe.”

Mangrove centers on Frank Crichlow (Shaun Parkes), the owner of Notting Hill’s Caribbean restaurant, Mangrove, a lively community base for locals, intellectuals and activists. In a reign of racist terror, the local police raid Mangrove time after time, making Frank and the local community take to the streets in peaceful protest in 1970. When nine men and women, including Frank and leader of the British Black Panther Movement Altheia Jones-LeCointe (Letitia Wright), and activist Darcus Howe (Malachi Kirby), are wrongly arrested and charged with incitement to riot, a highly publicized trial ensues, leading to hard-fought win for those fighting against discrimination. Letitia Wright (Black Panther), Shaun Parkes (Lost in Space), and Malachi Kirby (Curfew) star alongside Rochenda Sandall (Line of Duty), Jack Lowden (The Long Song), Sam Spruell (Snow White and the Huntsmen), Gershwyn Eustache (The Gentleman), Nathaniel Martello-White (Collateral), Richie Campbell (Liar), Jumayn Hunter (Les Miserables), and Gary Beadle (Summer of Rockets). Mangrove was co-written by Alastair Siddons and Steve McQueen.

Lovers Rock tells a fictional story of young love at a Blues party in 1980. The film is an ode to the romantic reggae genre called “Lovers Rock” and to the Black youth who found freedom and love in its sound in London house parties, when they were unwelcome in white nightclubs. Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn makes her screen debut opposite the BAFTAs 2020 Rising Star award recipient Micheal Ward (Top Boy). Shaniqua Okwok (Boys), Kedar Williams-Stirling (Sex Education), Ellis George (Dr Who), Alexander James-Blake (Top Boy), and Kadeem Ramsay (Blue Story) also star, as well as Francis Lovehall and Daniel Francis-Swaby who make their screen debuts. Lovers Rock was co-written by Courttia Newland and Steve McQueen.

Education is the coming of age story of 12-year-old Kingsley (Kenyah Sandy), who has a fascination for astronauts and rockets. When Kingsley is pulled to the headmaster’s office for being disruptive in class, he discovers he’s being sent to a school for those with “special needs.” Distracted by working two jobs, his parents (Sharlene Smith, Daniel Francis) are unaware of the unofficial segregation policy at play, preventing many Black children from receiving the education they deserve, until a group of West Indian women take matters into their own hands. Tamara Lawrance (The Long Song) also stars with Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker). Education was co-written by Alastair Siddons and Steve McQueen.

Alex Wheatle follows the true story of award-winning writer, Alex Wheatle (Sheyi Cole), from a young boy through his early adult years. Having spent his childhood in a mostly white institutional care home with no love or family, he finally finds not only a sense of community for the first time in Brixton, but his identity and ability to grow his passion for music and DJ’ing. When he is thrown in prison during the Brixton Uprising of 1981, he confronts his past and sees a path to healing. Sheyi Cole stars opposite Jonathan Jules, with Robbie Gee (Snatch), Elliott Edusah (1917), Cecilia Noble (Black Mirror) and Johann Myers (The Lost City of Z). Alex Wheatle was co-written by Alastair Siddons and Steve McQueen.

Red, White and Blue tells the true story of Leroy Logan (John Boyega), a young forensic scientist with a yearning to do more than his solitary laboratory work. When he sees his father assaulted by two policemen, he finds himself driven to revisiting a childhood ambition to become a police officer; an ambition borne from the naïve hope of wanting to change racist attitudes from within. Leroy must face the consequences of his father’s disapproval, and the blatant racism he finds in his new role as a despised yet exemplary constable in the Metropolitan Police Force. John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Steve Toussaint (Prince of Persia) star with talented newcomers Tyrone Huntley, Nathan Vidal and Jaden Oshenye. Red, White and Blue was co-written by Courttia Newland and Steve McQueen.

Mangrove and Lovers Rock were included in the Cannes 2020 Official Selection, while Lovers Rock made its world premiere as the opening night film at the 58th New York Film Festival, with Mangrove and Red, White, and Blue also featured in the main slate, set to make their world premieres later during the festival.

Small Axe is executive produced by Tracey Scoffield and David Tanner for Turbine Studios and Steve McQueen for Lammas Park. The series was commissioned by BBC Drama for BBC One, with Amazon Studios co-producing in the US. The series is distributed internationally by BBC Studios.

THE AWARD-WINNING PLAY “WHAT THE CONSTITUTION MEANS TO ME” WRITTEN BY AND STARRING HEIDI SCHRECK AND CAPTURED ON BROADWAY BY DIRECTOR MARIELLE HELLER TO PREMIERE EXCLUSIVELY ON AMAZON PRIME VIDEO OCTOBER 16

Amazon Studios Signs Heidi Schreck to New Overall Deal to Create Content Exclusively for Prime Video

CULVER CITY, Calif. – Sept. 17, 2020 – A filmed version of the critically-acclaimed, award-winning play What the Constitution Means to Me, created by and starring Heidi Schreck, will premiere Oct. 16, 2020, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. In the final, record-breaking week of its hit Broadway run, director Marielle Heller (director of Oscar-nominated films A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Can You Ever Forgive Me?) captured the play at the Helen Hayes Theater.

Amazon Studios has also signed a new overall deal with Schreck, to create content that will premiere exclusively on Prime Video.

Fifteen-year-old Heidi Schreck earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the United States. In this hilarious, hopeful, and achingly human show Heidi resurrects her teenage self in order to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women and the founding document that shaped their lives. What the Constitution Means to Me was named a Pulitzer Prize finalist and won the Obie Award and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play. Schreck also received two Tony Award nominations for What the Constitution Means to Me for Best Play and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play, and received the 2019 Benjamin Hadley Danks Award from the Academy of Arts and Letters. Directed for the stage by Obie Award winner Oliver Butler, What the Constitution Means to Me also features Mike Iveson, Rosdely Ciprian, and Thursday Williams

The executive producers of What the Constitution Means to Me are Heidi Schreck, Marielle Heller, Robin Schwartz, Kyle Laursen, Peter Saraf, Marc Turtletaub. The special was directed by Marielle Heller and produced by Big Beach and Defiant By Nature, Heller’s newly launched production company. The producers of the Broadway production – Diana DiMenna, Aaron Glick, and Matt Ross – also serve as producers of the filmed version.

“I’m delighted with how beautifully Mari Heller has translated Constitution to the screen and I’m thankful to Big Beach and Amazon Studios for making it possible to share the show with more people – especially right now when we can’t gather together in theaters,” said Schreck. “In light of the moment we are living through, I am donating part of my proceeds from this film to the Broadway Cares COVID Relief Fund and to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund’s Voting Rights 2020 initiative.”

“Heidi Schreck is one of today’s most relevant and original voices, and What the Constitution Means to Me delivers a point of view that is equal parts hilarious, heartbreaking and hopeful,” said Albert Cheng, COO and Co-Head of Television, Amazon Studios. “We are proud to bring the award-winning Broadway show to the screen for Prime Video and we know that Schreck’s next projects will embody the same intelligence and humanity.”

The Los Angeles Times’s Ashley Lee calls What the Constitution Means to Me “a deeply personal tour de force.” Jesse Green of The New York Times proclaimed it “not just the best play to open on Broadway so far this season, but also the most important” and Alexis Soloski said it’s “crazy funny and sometimes shattering, it’s a comedy about constitutional law and inherited trauma that makes the political very, very personal.”

Heidi Schreck is a writer and performer living in Brooklyn. After an extended run on Broadway, What the Constitution Means to Me played a sold-out, limited run at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C as well as at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, and will continue its national tour in 2021. What the Constitution Means to Me was named Best of the Year by the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, Time Magazine, The Hollywood Reporter, The New Yorker and more; NPR named it one of the “50 Great Pop Culture Moments” of 2019.

Schreck’s other plays Grand Concourse, Creature, and There Are No More Big Secrets have been produced all over the country and she has worked as a stage actor in NYC for almost 20 years. Her screenwriting credits include I Love Dick, Billions, Nurse Jackie and shows in development with Amazon Studios, Big Beach, Imagine Television and A24. As both an actor and writer she is the recipient of three Obie Awards, a Drama Desk Award, and a Theatre World Award; as well as the Horton Foote Playwriting Award and the Hull-Warriner Award from the Dramatists Guild. She was named one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business in 2019, and was featured on Variety’s 2019 Broadway Impact List. Schreck was awarded Smithsonian Magazine’s 2019 American Ingenuity Award, for her work in the Performing Arts.

Big Beach’s television division produces the GLAAD award-winning series Vida on Starz and is the studio behind the critically acclaimed Elizabeth Olsen and Jovan Adepo series Sorry For Your Loss on Facebook Watch. Big Beach is also producing Jean-Marc Vallée’s next television series Gorilla and the Bird for HBO based on Zack McDermott’s memoir. In addition, they are also producing Marielle Heller’s Five Women, a limited series based on the This American Life episode of the same name. Big Beach’s feature side produced Lulu Wang’s breakout Indie Spirit award winner for Best Feature The Farewell, as well as Marielle Heller’s Oscar-nominated A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

What the Constitution Means to Me is the debut release for DEFIANT BY NATURE, the newly launched production company founded by award winning director, writer, actor and producer Marielle Heller and with Havilah Brewster serving as Head of Development and Production. The New York based company is focused on telling stories that uplift, inspire and entertain while simultaneously shining bright lights on women and non-binary creators. In a first look TV deal with BIG BEACH, the company will develop and produce new series and specials for television, some of which Heller may direct, while also shepherding new voices and talent. Currently in development is a limited series based on the This American Life episode, “Five Women”. Heller has directed three critically acclaimed and award-winning films in the span of five years — A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019), the three-time Oscar nominated Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018) and her feature debut Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015), which earned Heller an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature and nomination for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directing-First Time Feature Film.

AFI Movie Club will enrich the free rentals by highlighting each day’s film with a conversation between film critic Shawn Edwards and filmmakers and talent involved with the films; “Behind the Scene” featurettes about a specific scene examined by an artist from the film; and exclusive clips sourced from AFI’s extensive archive of Master Class Seminars, as well as curated trivia researched from the AFI Catalog of Feature Films.

Information about each of the programs is listed below.

MASTERPIECE: Van der Valk
Amsterdam – city of bikes, boats and bodies. At least, that’s the way steely-eyed cop Piet Van der Valk sees his murder-infested beat. Marc Warren (Beecham House, The Good Wife) stars as the title character in an all-new series based on Nicolas Freeling’s legendary crime thrillers.

Premiere Date: September 13, 2020
Episodes: 6
Genre: Crime/Drama
Language: English
The wildly popular original series of Van der Valk starred Barry Foster and ran on British television from 1972 to 1992. Now Marc Warren steps into the role of the brilliant but cynical commissaris (inspector), solving baffling crimes in 21st-century Amsterdam, which is more prosperous, cosmopolitan and crime-prone than ever.

Co-starring are Maimie McCoy (Wallander) as Van der Valk’s right-hand woman, Lucienne Hassell; Luke Allen-Gale (Dominion) as the scruffy sergeant, Brad de Vries; and Elliot Barnes-Worrell (Jericho) as the squad’s brainy new guy, Job Cloovers.

Naturally, the characters have their personal issues. Most of the time Piet lives solo on an old sloop anchored in the harbor, where he wrestles with the painful memory of a lost love. Lucienne too, has been thwarted in romance. De Vries has no ambitions beyond feeding his appetites, while Cloovers is overeager to excel at his new assignment. Chief Dahlman, (Emma Fielding, Les Misérables), is recovering from a near-death experience on a previous case, and Hendrick, the hard-living, virtuoso pathologist played by Darrell D’Silva (Game of Thrones), has happily settled into Amsterdam’s guilt-free pleasures. Together they face a trio of challenging cases that give a new slant to Amsterdam’s renowned sophistication, for it appears that the city’s stylishness and toleration go hand in hand with murder.

Walter Presents: The Cliff, Season 2: Depth of Darkness
Troubled Reykjavik crime detective Helgi Marvin Runarsson is called in to help local police investigate the apparent suicide of a wealthy businessman on the remote Snaefellsnes Penninsula, however, the case turns out to be far from simple and is looking more like murder. At the same time, a girl and her father disappear in a beautiful but dangerous lava field which Helgi is also dragged into helping investigate.

Premiere Date: September 4, 2020
Episodes: 4
Genre: Crime/Drama
Language: Icelandic with English Subtitles
In addition to all of the complicated cases, the seasoned and gruff detective is annoyed by his inexperienced partner Gréta who is eager to prove herself. Pulled into a sinister trail of evidence, Helgi’s own deeply hidden secrets are unearthed. But when his daughter is kidnapped, will he have to turn a blind eye to murder to save her life?

Walter Presents: Recoil
Robin, 24, is released from an Oslo prison after serving several years for smuggling narcotics. He’s now keen on making a fresh start and getting a job, but even his own family is skeptical, and the police are constantly on him, day and night. Being back out in society is harder than he expected. His old gang is waiting for him to return as they have to pay back the drug money they owe; there are rumors that the police helped themselves to cash and drugs during the raid that put him behind bars.

Premiere Date: September 11, 2020
Episodes: 8
Genre: Crime/Drama
Language: Norwegian with English Subtitles
After several attempts to get his life back on track, Robin gets sucked back into old habits, and agrees to investigate the police with his old gang. Soon they discover a scary pattern of corruption and Robin gets closer to finding the answer to who killed his older brother.

Walter Presents: Fatale-Station
On the evening that Sarah manages to flee from a man who has been trying to kill her for some time, she finds herself far away from the big city in the lost village of Fatale-Station. Her arrival in the small village affects the locals in unexpected ways: Francois, the lame-duck mayor, suddenly regains confidence and courage. Johanne, the mayor’s wife, who has been catatonic for over a year, slowly begins to wake up, and last but not least, Eddy, the gloomy manager of the corner tavern, is suddenly not so gloomy.

Premiere Date: September 18, 2020
Episodes: 10
Genre: Drama/Mystery-Thriller
Language: French Canadian with English Subtitles
But Mrs. O’Gallagher, the town’s powerful matriarch, is one of the few people immune to Sarah’s charms and would rather see her go back to where she came from. She is wary of this woman who arouses passions wherever she goes. What lies behind Sarah’s actions? Could she be looking for protectors, preparing for the day her assailant finds her again? No one comes to Fatale-Station without having something to hide…

Walter Presents: Potsdam Homicide
In the beautiful city of Potsdam, Germany, two childhood friends on the same career path with the same passion for police work become investigators and team up to solve a string of crimes in the area. Luna Kunath is strong-willed and thinks on her feet, but she can be a little naïve, whereas Sophie Pohlmann is a little more mature but she over-analyzes situations which work against her.

Premiere Date: September 25, 2020
Episodes: 6
Genre: Drama/Crime-Mystery
Language: German with English Subtitles
Together they are part of a larger unit which quickly becomes a close knit work family. They are led by: their boss, Bernhard Henschel; the good spirited forensic pathologist Werner Vense; two chief criminal inspectors David Brunbaum and Christoph Westerman; and the best crime scene investigator, Thomas Brandner. Only time will tell if these greenhorns will be successful in solving the cases they are assigned.

“UTOPIA” SETS OUT TO SAVE THE WORLD SEPTEMBER 25

Amazon Prime Video Drops Official Trailer for Twisty, Conspiracy Thriller

CULVER CITY, Calif. – August 18, 2020 – Amazon Prime Video announced today that the highly anticipated series Utopia will premiere Friday, September 25. The official trailer and key art for Utopia were also released today. The eight-part conspiracy thriller comes from best-selling author and award-winning screenwriter, Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl, Sharp Objects). After years of honing the ambitious project, Flynn delivers an artfully detailed series that urges viewers to expect the unexpected, save humanity, but first… find Jessica Hyde.

Though the comic at the center of the series predicts the world’s end, Utopia is filled with hidden meanings, shocking twists and radical evolutions for its dynamic characters – brought to life by an ensemble cast of breakout and seasoned talent. Utopia premieres September 25 in the US, Canada, UK, Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, India and Japan. Dubbed foreign language versions will premiere later this fall in additional territories worldwide.

About Utopia:

Utopia is an eight-episode conspiracy thriller about saving the world, while trying to find your place in it. Inspired by the British series of the same name, the new Amazon Original series was written by Gillian Flynn, who also serves as showrunner and executive producer. Utopia centers on a group of comic fans who meet online and bond over their obsession of a seemingly fictional comic called, “Utopia.” Together, Becky (Ashleigh LaThrop), Ian (Dan Byrd), Samantha (Jessica Rothe), Wilson Wilson (Desmin Borges) and Grant (Javon “Wanna” Walton) unearth hidden meanings cloaked within the pages of “Utopia,” predicting threats to humanity. They realize these are not just the makings of a conspiracy; they are very real dangers coming alive right now in their world. The group embarks on a high-stakes adventure, bringing them face-to-face with the comic’s famed central character, Jessica Hyde (Sasha Lane), who joins them on their mission to save the world while harboring secrets of her own. The series also stars John Cusack as Dr. Kevin Christie, in his first series regular role for television. Rainn Wilson stars as Dr. Michael Stearns, Farrah Mackenzie as Alice, Christopher Denham as Arby, and Cory Michael Smith as Thomas Christie.

Alongside Gillian Flynn, executive producers include Jessica Rhoades (with whom Flynn collaborated on Sharp Objects), Sharon Levy, Sharon Hall, Toby Haynes, Karen Wilson, and Dennis Kelly. The series is a co-production between Endemol Shine North America, Kudos and Amazon Studios. Utopia will be available exclusively on Prime Video in more than 200 countries and territories.
