HBO Original Documentary ESCAPE FROM KABUL Debuts September 21

HBO Original Documentary ESCAPE FROM KABUL, A Harrowing And Immersive Account Of The 2021 U.S. Airlift Out Of Afghanistan, Debuts September 21

The HBO Original documentary film ESCAPE FROM KABUL, directed by Jamie Roberts (HBO’s “Four Hours at the Capitol”) and executive produced by Dan Reed (HBO’s “Leaving Neverland” and “Four Hours at the Capitol”), debuts WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 (9:00-10:25 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

ESCAPE FROM KABUL unfolds over 18 monumental days in August 2021, from the U.S. withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan through the subsequent evacuation of tens of thousands of Afghan citizens from Kabul airport after the Taliban seized the city. This deeply immersive and emotional documentary combines never-before-seen archival footage from those on the ground at the airport, with exclusive interviews with people who were there throughout the period, including Afghan citizens attempting to flee, U.S. Marines tasked with managing the evacuation, and Taliban commanders and fighters who had recently taken the city.

After 20 years of war between the Taliban, (an Islamic fundamentalist group) and NATO forces, a small force of U.S. Marines were deployed to Kabul on August 13 intending to evacuate U.S. citizens and “at risk” Afghans who had cooperated with the Americans and Allied Forces during the conflict. The orderly evacuation was meant to be implemented by the agreed-upon deadline of August 31, but when the Taliban unexpectedly took control of the city two days after the Marines arrived, plans changed.

Fearing reprisals and crackdowns on human rights from the Taliban, thousands of Afghan men, women, and children rushed to the airport, seeking an escape route. Taliban fighters, including suicide troops, encircled the airport perimeter in an uneasy truce with U.S. and Allied forces. With little advance planning, U.S. Marines battled daily to reclaim the overwhelmed airfield, all while a humanitarian catastrophe unfolded, with Afghan citizens spending days on end in the Kabul heat, without access to food or water, waiting to get through the gates to the airport. As the crowds grew increasingly desperate to leave, a tragic sequence of events unfolded, including a devastating suicide bomb attack that ISIS claimed responsibility for, killing 13 U.S. military personnel and more than 170 Afghan civilians.

ESCAPE FROM KABUL is rooted in the unexpected and historic confrontation that occurred at Kabul airport and unfolds in dramatic moment-by-moment telling over two and a half pivotal weeks. Despite the chaos and suffering, 124,000 people were evacuated during the Kabul airlift, the largest in modern U.S. history, marking a devastating end to America’s longest-running war. A final coda, filmed in spring of 2022, confirms the Taliban government’s restrictions on women and girls and violent reprisals, leaving an uncertain future for many Afghan citizens who were not able to evacuate in August 2021.

HBO Documentary Films Presents ESCAPE FROM KABUL, in association with the BBC, in collaboration with ARTE France, an AMOS Pictures Production. Directed by Jamie Roberts; producer, Jamie Roberts; executive producer, Dan Reed. For HBO: coordinating producer, Anna Klein; executive producers, Nancy Abraham and Lisa Heller.

HBO Original Documentary KATRINA BABIES Debuts August 24

HBO Original Documentary KATRINA BABIES Debuts August 24

An Intimate Look At The Aftermath Of Hurricane Katrina And Its Impact On The Youth Of New Orleans

The HBO documentary KATRINA BABIES, directed by first-time filmmaker and New Orleans native Edward Buckles, Jr., debuts WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24 (9:00-10:25 p.m. ET/PT). The film, produced by Invisible Pictures, TIME Studios, Creative Control and House of the Young Entertainment, will debut on HBO and be available to stream on HBO Max.

Sixteen years after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, an entire generation still grapples with the lifelong impact of having their childhood redefined by tragedy. New Orleans filmmaker Edward Buckles Jr., who was 13 years old during Katrina and its initial aftermath, spent seven years documenting the stories of his peers who survived the storm as children, using his community’s tradition of oral storytelling to open a door for healing and to capture the strength and spirit of his city.

KATRINA BABIES details the close-knit families and vibrant communities of New Orleans whose lives were uprooted by the 2005 disaster. These American children who were airlifted out of the rising waters, evacuated from their homes to refugee-like centers, or placed in makeshift, temporary living situations, have been neglected. As families were tasked with reintegrating into new communities, having experienced loss, displacement and lack of support from government officials, the children were left to process their trauma in a wounded, fractured city.

Buckles raises his camera to elevate the voices of his city; utilizing confessional-style footage, home movies, animation, harrowing archival footage and candid interviews with Katrina survivors, Buckles unearths a reservoir of grief and suppressed emotion. Through these moving, first-hand accounts, KATRINA BABIES journeys toward healing, not just from the most destructive storm in U.S. history, but also from the multi-generational traumas of being black and disenfranchised in America. In the face of systemic racism, government neglect, and the unprocessed pain of family separations, the children of Katrina are left to chart their own path toward healing.

HBO Documentary Films presents KATRINA BABIES. Directed by Edward Buckles, Jr. of House of the Young Entertainment; produced by Edward Buckles, Jr, Audrey Rosenberg of Invisible Pictures, Rebecca Teitel of TIME Studios; executive produced by Coodie & Chike of Creative Control, Ian Orefice, Loren Hammonds, Mike Beck and Alexa Conway of TIME Studios, Eileen Tavarez and Jess Jacobs of Invisible Pictures; written by: Edward Buckles, Jr, Luther Clement-Lam, Audrey Rosenberg. For HBO: executive producers, Nancy Abraham and Lisa Heller and Sara Rodriguez.
