BYUtv’s “Studio C” Celebrates 10th Anniversary, Season 16 Premiere with Special Guest Jon Heder

Six original cast members of the popular sketch comedy series return to perform, host or direct

PROVO, Utah, Sept. 21, 2022 — BYUtv, the home of inspiring family entertainment – available over cable, satellite and free streaming – today announced that the 10th anniversary, 16th season premiere of fan-favorite “Studio C” will guest star comedic actor Jon Heder (“Napoleon Dynamite,” “Blades of Glory”). The premiere episode is set to release on the BYUtv app on Oct. 2 at 12:01 a.m. MT and on the BYUtv linear network on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. ET/5 p.m. MT/4 p.m. PT. All aired episodes of the show are always available to stream for free on the BYUtv app and at BYUtv.org, and sketches will continue to be featured across social media.

A viral phenom with more than two billion views on YouTube and past guest stars including Emmy winner Kenan Thompson (“Saturday Night Live,” “Kenan”) and Will Forte (“Saturday Night Live,” “The Last Man on Earth”), “Studio C” derives universally loved humor from everyday life through shareable sketches that offer comic perspective on commonplace scenarios and pop culture commentary. Since its premiere in 2012, the family-friendly sketch comedy series has successfully created standout characters like Scott Sterling, hosted a live special in New York City with sold-out audiences and fostered a revolving cast of talented comedians.

“Studio C’ is one of our most beloved legacy series, delivering lots of laughs and lifting people up through comedy,” said Andra Johnson Duke, head of content at BYUtv. “This season is filled with fun surprises for lifelong fans and newcomers alike, including a Halloween night special with a zombie-inspired spin on the show’s opening sequence. To honor our anniversary, fresh faces will unite with returning favorites and iconic characters – a mixture of everything that has made the past 10 years of ‘Studio C’ so memorable and enduring.”

Returning this season are original cast member Jason Gray, Dalton Johnson, Garet Allen and Arvin Mitchell. Megan Rico and Naomi Winders have also been promoted to series regulars, while Joe Balanza, Gabby Moore and Jericho Lopez join as recently added featured cast members. Also back this season is Tori Pence, who was part of the cast from season 8 to season 13.

In celebration of the show’s past, compilation episodes will recap some of the best sketches in “Studio C” history, with themes such as “Back to School,” “Best of Sports” and “Best of TV Parodies.” Each special will be hosted by an original cast member, including Whitney Call, James Perry and Stephen Meek, who will also perform in a digital exclusive sketch. Some of the original cast members are returning behind the camera, as well, with season 16 sketches directed by Jeremy Warner and Natalie Madsen.

The premiere episode of the season will see the cast team up with special guest star Jon Heder, whose breakout role in the 2004 hit comedy “Napoleon Dynamite” catapulted him to stardom. Throughout his career, Heder has appeared in many films such as “Just Like Heaven,” “Surf’s Up” and “Walt Before Mickey.” He recently starred alongside “Studio C”‘s Jason Gray in the 2021 romantic comedy “Funny Thing About Love.” In the season 16 premiere, Heder finds himself at the heart of sketches that take him from a hot air balloon ride with a hilarious twist to a mall trip that escalates beyond his control.

New this season will be a digital exclusive addition called “Studio C+” that features cast members interacting with fans outside of sketches. Most recently, the cast helped younger fans with a bake sale held at a local high school and raised money for Hope Squad, an organization that aims to prevent suicide through public awareness and education. “Studio C” is produced by Kaleidoscope Pictures, with Jake Van Wagoner (“Impractical Jokers,” “Show Offs”) returning as showrunner.

“We put a lot of energy into catering to our social audiences, and it’s fun to see the engagement from our fans as we continue to push the show creatively,” said Van Wagoner. “It’s been great having some of our ‘Studio C’ alumni back. Bridging the gap between original and newer cast members has been exciting and has really made it feel like there is a ‘Studio C’ family.”

Each competition reality series will return soon with 10 fresh new episodes

PROVO, Utah, June 21, 2022 — BYUtv, a family entertainment network available over cable, satellite and free streaming, has greenlit new seasons of returning favorite competition shows “Survivalists” and “All-Round Champion.” The 10-episode season three of “Survivalists,” which follows families as they brave the elements together, will be released in fall 2022. Filming in Baja California, Mexico, was completed earlier this year. The 10-episode season five of “All-Round Champion,” with outstanding young para-athletes competing in each other’s sports, is set to begin production later this month and premiere in early 2023. All released episodes of all seasons of both series are always available to stream for free on the BYUtv app and at BYUtv.org.

This season of “Survivalists” will take place in locations across the Baja peninsula and provides a thrilling new twist on the format. “Survivalists” is a competition race built around an experience of self-discovery and improvement. Each episode will feature two families in a race against each other to the finish line to raise the flag for $10,000 in prizes. They will endure experiences that will refine their personal attributes, family relationships, and open their perspectives to the possibility that there is more to life than what they might have thought. Elite endurance athlete Colin O’Brady returns as host. “Survivalists” is produced by veteran unscripted producers Mark Koops (“The Biggest Loser,” “MasterChef”) and Eric Day with INE Entertainment and BYUtv.

In the new round of “All-Round Champion,” nine of the best young athletes in their sports will assemble from the United States, Canada and UK to compete in the ultimate competition, and, for the first time, they’ll all be para-athletes. The catch? They’ll compete in every sport but their own. With only three days to train in each event, these extraordinary athletes will be pushed to the limit, and only one will be crowned the All-Round Champion. Olympian and world champion hurdler Perdita Felicien returns as host and mentor. “All-Round Champion” is produced by BYUtv and marblemedia with executive producers Mark Bishop and Matt Hornburg.

New family drama set to debut Feb. 27 on linear and free streaming

PROVO, Utah, Feb. 16, 2022 — BYUtv, a family entertainment network available over cable, satellite and digital, today announced a second season pickup for its uplifting, magical drama “Ruby and the Well” prior to its premiere. The first two episodes of the first season will debut on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 9 p.m. ET/7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT, with all 10 episodes available to stream for free on the BYUtv app and at BYUtv.org the same day.

“At BYUtv, we are always looking for the elusive combination of intriguing entertainment that also inspires, and ‘Ruby and the Well’ delivers on the promise of both elements,” said Andra Johnson Duke, head of content at BYUtv. “Watching it will make every member of the family want to go out and grant wishes themselves, making the world a better place like Ruby. It has been a wish-come-true collaboration to work with Shaftesbury to develop this show from the minds of the creators of ‘Dwight in Shining Armor.'”

“Ruby and the Well” is a family drama that follows the adventures of 14-year-old Ruby O’Reilly as she tries to grant wishes for the residents of the hard-luck rural town of Emerald. On each episode, newcomer Ruby is summoned to a magic wishing well on her dad’s property and given a series of mysterious visions that correspond to one of the townsfolk’s innermost hopes and dreams. As the newest “keeper” of this magic well, Ruby and new best friends Mina Amani and Sam Price must use smarts and determination to decipher the cryptic clues and “solve” the wish, all while keeping their heroic activities secret from the rest of the town. It takes hard work, a lot of focus and a little luck, but little by little, the weary hearts and broken spirits of the locals are restored, and the newly inspired town starts to pull together and prosper.

The series stars Zoe Wiesenthal (“Charmed,” “The 100”) as Ruby O’Reilly, along with Kristopher Turner (“Saving Hope,” “Good Witch”) as Ruby’s dad, Daniel O’Reilly; Dylan Kingwell (“A Series of Unfortunate Events,” “The Baby-Sitters Club”) as Sam Price, Ruby’s next door neighbor and friend; Paula Boudreau (“The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Suits”) as Paula Price, Sam’s mother; and Joel Oulette (“Trickster,” “Monkey Beach”) as family friend Ben Taggart; introducing Lina Sennia as Mina Amani, Ruby’s social butterfly friend, and Nobahar Dadui as Ava Amani, Mina’s mother.

“Ruby and the Well” creators LeeAnne H. Adams and Brian J. Adams are best known as the creators and showrunners of BYUtv’s comedy adventure series “Dwight in Shining Armor,” which recently aired its fifth and final season. “Dwight In Shining Armor” was picked up by Paramount for international distribution in 2019 and is now airing in 45 countries around the globe.

Suzanne Bolch and John May serve as executive producers and showrunners. They have made kids and family television in the animation, live-action and digital spaces for global audiences, including iconic properties such as “The Magic School Bus” and “Sesame Street.” They both serve as industry mentors and are long-time champions of diversity in television so all kids can see themselves represented onscreen. Christina Jennings, also an executive producer, is founder, chairman and CEO of Shaftesbury, a content company known for innovative storytelling and building successful brands, spanning the production of TV, feature film and digital content. “Ruby and the Well” is produced by Shaftesbury (“Life with Derek,” “Murdoch Mysteries”) for BYUtv.

“BYUtv’s upcoming premieres are filled with stories that lift spirits, giving families a chance to grow closer to one another and have fun together,” said Andra Johnson Duke, head of content at BYUtv. “Whether brand new like the enchanting ‘Ruby and the Well’ or fan favorite like ‘Studio C,’ which has had an incredible run of 15 seasons so far, each one of these shows invites positive vibes and is a great example of the moving, engaging entertainment we strive to offer.”

Anchoring Family Premiere Night is “Ruby and the Well,” a family drama that follows the adventures of 14-year-old “Ruby O’Reilly” as she tries to grant wishes for the residents of the hard-luck rural town of Emerald. On each episode, newcomer Ruby is summoned to a magic wishing well on her dad’s property and given a series of mysterious visions that correspond to one of the townsfolk’s innermost hopes and dreams. It takes hard work, a lot of focus and a little luck, but little by little, the weary hearts and broken spirits of the locals are restored, and the newly inspired town starts to pull together and prosper.

The series stars Zoe Wiesenthal (“Charmed,” “The 100”), along with Kristopher Turner (“Saving Hope,” “Good Witch”), Dylan Kingwell (“A Series of Unfortunate Events,” “The Baby-Sitters Club”), Paula Boudreau (“The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Suits”) and Joel Oulette (“Trickster,” “Monkey Beach”), introducing Lina Sennia and Nobahar Dadui. “Ruby and the Well” is produced by Shaftesbury (“Life with Derek,” “Murdoch Mysteries”) for BYUtv.

Joining “Ruby and the Well” is season two of “Malory Towers,” set in an all-girls boarding school in England after World War II – a nostalgic world of midnight feasts, lacrosse, ghost stories and lasting friendships. Rounding out the night is season nine of “Relative Race,” the first family-history based competitive reality show, which follows four teams as they meet relatives linked by DNA for the first time in a race throughout the United States.

BYUtv’s returning original programming slate includes season 15 of long-running, viral sketch comedy series “Studio C,” featuring special guest star Will Forte in the season premiere, and season four of “Making Good” with host Kirby Heyborne, who loves helping people and eagerly volunteers for organizations regardless of the circumstances and his background or experience.

BYUtv Commissions Contemporary Adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s “The Canterville Ghost” from BBC Studios Productions

Veteran British cast features Anthony Head as Sir Simon de Canterville

Four-part limited series premieres on Halloween

PROVO, Utah, Sept. 1, 2021 — BYUtv, a family entertainment network available over cable, satellite and free streaming, today announced it has ordered a new four-part modern retelling of Oscar Wilde’s “The Canterville Ghost” from BBC Studios Productions, produced in the U.K. with a cast of notable British actors. The limited series will receive a Halloween premiere on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 9 p.m. ET/7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT. Adapted by Jude Tindall, the series marks the first British drama commission by the non-commercial, value-based television network bringing inspiring and uplifting entertainment to more than 50 million homes across America.

“‘The Canterville Ghost’ brings together the acclaimed storytelling that BBC Studios Productions is well known for with BYUtv’s unique brand of family entertainment,” said Andra Johnson Duke, head of content at BYUtv. “We are honored to partner with BBC Studios Productions to create a not-to-be-missed special event of supernatural proportions filled with humor and heart that each member of the family will enjoy.”

The accomplished cast of “The Canterville Ghost” includes Anthony Head (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) as Sir Simon de Canterville; James Lance (“Ted Lasso”) as Hiram Otis; Caroline Catz (“Doc Martin”) as Lucy Otis; Laurel Waghorn (“Holby City”) as Virginia Otis; Carolyn Pickles (“Broadchurch”) as Mrs. Umney; Haydn Gwynne (“The Windsors”) as Lady Deborah de Canterville; Jack Bardoe (“Belgravia”) as The Honourable Cecil Canterville; Harry Gostelow (“The Crown”) as Lord St. John Canterville; Lizzy Connolly (“Call the Midwife”) as Lady Henrietta Stilton; Fred Fergus (“Wonder Woman”) as Viscount Ralph Stilton; Jeff Rawle (“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”) as Bluey, the Duke of Stilton; Harry Taurasi (“The Borgias”) as Django Lovell; Cathy Tyson (“Mona Lisa”) as Masilda Lovell; and the voice of Jonty Stephens (“Life on Mars”) as Cesspitt; and introduces Joe and Tom Graves as Frank and Theo Otis, and Harriette and Charlotte Robinson as Patience and Charity Lovell.

Set in leafy 21st century rural England, “The Canterville Ghost” sees American tech billionaire Hiram Otis buy Canterville Chase, unaware that the contents include a malevolent family ghost, Sir Simon de Canterville, who has been haunting the premises for centuries. Or that his family will face the full might of the English aristocracy: united in opposition to the parvenu Americans. The contemporary reimagining of the classic Oscar Wilde comedy revolves around three families – the aristocratic Cantervilles, the Romani Lovells and the American Otises – who must come together to find redemption and heal the past.

Despite its modern setting, it’s an old world, bound by strict social convention and archaic traditions. A world of house parties and cricket matches, fox hunting and pheasant shooting. The stately homes of the aristocracy and a resident ghost…

“This is Oscar Wilde meets ‘Downton Abbey,'” said Will Trotter, executive producer for BBC Studios Productions. “It’s bursting with gothic horror, romantic comedy and pathos. We are thrilled to be working with BYUtv on such an uplifting drama for the whole family, and we hope it brings much laughter to BYUtv audiences.”

“The Canterville Ghost” is a four-part, hour-long limited series that has been commissioned by head of content Andra Johnson Duke for BYUtv, and comes from the award-winning team behind hit series like “Father Brown” and “Shakespeare & Hathaway.” It is produced by BBC Studios Productions, written by Jude Tindall (“Father Brown,” “Shakespeare & Hathaway”) and executive produced by Will Trotter (“Father Brown,” “Shakespeare & Hathaway,” “Doctors”). “The Canterville Ghost” will be brought to the screen by directors Paul Gibson and Suri Krishnamma. The script producer is Neil Irvine, and the series producer for BBC Studios Productions is Sue Howells. BBC Studios is distributing the series internationally.

In addition to “The Canterville Ghost,” BYUtv’s original programming slate includes new scripted workplace comedy with puppets “9 Years to Neptune”; “An Evening with Marie” – a symphonic concert special from beloved performer Marie Osmond; and the long-running, viral sketch comedy series “Studio C.”
