CBS NEWS ANNOUNCE MULTIPLATFORM COVERAGE ON THE PATH FORWARD FOR AMERICA

CBS NEWS AND STATIONS ANNOUNCE MULTIPLATFORM COVERAGE ON THE PATH FORWARD FOR AMERICA ONE YEAR AFTER THE JAN. 6TH INSURRECTION

CBS NEWS’ COVERAGE “JANUARY 6: ONE YEAR LATER” WILL FOCUS ON AMERICAN DEMOCRACY AND MENDING FRAYED TRUST IN INSTITUTIONS AND EACH OTHER

“CBS MORNINGS” CO-HOST TONY DOKOUPIL AND “CBS EVENING NEWS” ANCHOR NORAH O’DONNELL WILL BROADCAST FROM THE U.S. CAPITOL IN WASHINGTON, D.C., ON JAN. 6, 2022

CBS STATIONS, CBSN AND ALL CBS NEWS PLATFORMS TO FEATURE ORIGINAL REPORTING, INCLUDING A GRIPPING SIX-PART DOCUMENTARY ON PARAMOUNT+ THAT TRACES THE ORIGIN OF GOVERNMENT EXTREMISM

CBS News and Stations will mark one year since the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol by deepening its ongoing coverage of the events from that day with a renewed emphasis on the state of American democracy and a focus on trust: in each other and in the laws and institutions of the nation. For many, Jan. 6 looked like more evidence that trust had eroded – though not all agreed on why. CBS News’ coverage, “January 6: One Year Later,” will offer thoughtful and incisive reporting across multiple broadcasts and platforms exploring those themes of democracy and trust, as well as chronicling the events of Jan. 6 and what has happened in the year that followed.

A new CBS News poll will take an in-depth look at how Americans see the state of their democracy today and whether their views of the Jan. 6 insurrection have changed over the last year. The poll will put a special focus on social trust in the nation today: not just on whether people still see a threat of violence, but also on what Americans say still binds them together. CBS News’ polling will be featured throughout the week across all platforms for “January 6: One Year Later” coverage.

Coverage will begin Sunday, Jan. 2 on CBS SUNDAY MORNING and FACE THE NATION WITH MARGARET BRENNAN, with interviews from members of the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack. The week’s special coverage will feature a live broadcast of CBS MORNINGS co-hosted by Tony Dokoupil from the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, Jan. 6. The CBS EVENING NEWS WITH NORAH O’DONNELL, the only evening news program to originate from Washington, will feature anchor and managing editor Norah O’Donnell also broadcasting live from the U.S. Capitol that night.

As part of CBS News’ distinct coverage, Paramount+ will exclusively premiere INDIVISIBLE – HEALING HATE, a gripping six-part documentary narrated by Mandy Patinkin, star of Showtime’s HOMELAND, tracing the origins of anti-government extremism that’s been decades in the making and built on a deadly series of historical events that galvanized far-right radicals to take violent action. INDIVISIBLE – HEALING HATE features interviews with those who have experienced rage firsthand: a reformed Neo-Nazi, a mother victimized by vicious hate crimes, the son of a notorious white supremacist, and a father whose child died in the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. INDIVISIBLE – HEALING HATE features people from all ends of the ideological spectrum telling the story of America – how it became so divided and what can be done to heal the hate. The documentary will be available on Paramount+ starting Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022.

CBSN, CBS News’ 24/7 streaming news service, will have comprehensive, day-long coverage leading up to a special edition of CBSN’s daily politics show RED AND BLUE, led by CBSN anchor Elaine Quijano from the CBS Broadcast Center in New York, with CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett in Washington D.C. The special will air at 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM, ET featuring conversations with CBS News chief political analyst and senior national correspondent John Dickerson, elections and surveys director Anthony Salvanto, and senior investigative correspondent Catherine Herridge. Throughout the day, CBSN’s coverage will also feature interviews with lawmakers including Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), and discussions with CBS News journalists including chief White House correspondent Nancy Cordes, chief justice and national affairs correspondent Jeff Pegues, senior White House and political correspondent Ed O’Keefe, and correspondents Kris Van Cleave and Nikole Killion with the latest on the Jan. 6 commission investigation. CBSN’s coverage will also offer first-person reflections of what happened on Jan. 6 that day and in the year since.

CBS News’ coverage “January 6: One Year Later” will include:

On the Jan. 2 broadcast of FACE THE NATION, moderator Margaret Brennan will interview Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), members of the House Select Committee, and the University of Chicago’s Robert Pape, who is leading landmark research polling about radicalized Americans. The broadcast will also feature a discussion on the new CBS News polling on how Americans see the state of their democracy today.

CBS MORNINGS co-host Tony Dokoupil will anchor the broadcast from the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6. Dokoupil will sit down with Americans on different sides of the political spectrum to explore mistrust in institutions and what that means for future elections. CBS MORNINGS will look not only at the status of investigations and arrests but also at how the sheer scale of the attack wasn’t known until weeks and months had gone by. Jeff Pegues, who reported live from the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, will report on the online army of digital sleuths coordinating with law enforcement, and the success they have had at bringing rioters to justice. Kris Van Cleave, who also reported from the west lawn of the Capitol during the insurrection, has exclusive access to the U.S. Capitol Police, interviewing key officials and taking viewers inside a department struggling to deal with a surge in criminal death threats against lawmakers over the last year. CBS News chief White House correspondent Nancy Cordes, chief political analyst and senior national correspondent John Dickerson and guests will join the show in Washington, D.C. and New York City to look back on the insurrection and what it means as the nation moves forward.

CBS EVENING NEWS Anchor and Managing Editor Norah O’Donnell will anchor the broadcast from the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, marking one-year since the insurrection. O’Donnell will be joined by John Dickerson to discuss the state of the nation a year later. Throughout the week, the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH NORAH O’DONNELL will feature new reporting and continue CBS News’ Unifying America series, highlighting examples of communities coming together to bridge their divisions and find common ground.

On the Jan. 2 edition of CBS SUNDAY MORNING, Major Garrett will report on how the lies former President Trump and his supporters continue to spread about the 2020 election and the Jan. 6 insurrection have resulted in sweeping changes to voting access and the democratic process across the country – and what that means for the 2022 elections. Rita Braver will profile Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) about the death of his son and his family’s connection to the events of Jan. 6, his management of Trump’s second impeachment, as well as his ongoing work uncovering the facts behind the attack on the U.S. Capitol.

On the Jan. 9 edition of 60 MINUTES, Norah O’Donnell will profile Dave Isay, the founder of StoryCorps, an oral history project he started 18 years ago that has now become the largest single collection of human voices ever recorded. O’Donnell will talk with Isay about “One Small Step,” his new project to get Americans from across the political spectrum to stop demonizing each other and start communicating face-to-face, one conversation at a time. Isay hopes the same idea that drove him to create StoryCorps can help prevent the country from becoming even further divided.

CBS News Radio will provide affiliates with Special Reports and in-depth programming, featuring reporters and correspondents in Washington D.C. Christopher Cruise and Linda Kenyon will cover the events on Capitol Hill; Steven Portnoy will be with President Biden; and Steve Dorsey, who was in the Capitol on Jan. 6, will look back at the events of that day. Jeff Pegues will provide an in-depth look at the Capitol riot in a special edition of AMERICA: CHANGED FOREVER WITH JEFF PEGUES. Allison Keyes will provide coverage in the CBS NEWS WEEKEND ROUNDUP.
