PBS and The WNET Group Launch #PBSForTheArts, a New Campaign Celebrating the Resiliency of the Arts in America During the COVID-19 Pandemic Shutdown and Reopening

As America’s home for the arts, PBS launches an expanded slate of multiplatform arts programming beginning April 23

(ARLINGTON, Va. – April 21, 2021) Today, PBS and The WNET Group announced #PBSForTheArts, a multiplatform campaign that celebrates the resiliency of the arts in America during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown and reopening. The campaign features a variety of programming across broadcast and digital platforms to showcase the devastating impact of the pandemic to the arts industry. While some arts organizations did not survive the effects of the shutdown, others adapted and evolved to meet the moment, but continue to fight to make a full recovery. Launching on all platforms on Friday, April 23, the collection of #PBSForTheArts content will be available for broadcast on PBS and streaming on pbs.org/arts and the PBS Video app. Curated conversation and digital shorts will be available on PBS social media platforms using #PBSForTheArts.

#PBSForTheArts kicks off with new programming filmed within the constraints of the pandemic: GREAT PERFORMANCES “Romeo & Juliet” (Friday, April 23 at 9:00 p.m. ET), a contemporary rendering of Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy from the National Theatre, where a company of actors in a shuttered theater bring to life the timeless tale of two young lovers who strive to transcend a world of violence and hate; GREAT PERFORMANCES “The Arts Interrupted” (Friday, May 14 at 9:00 p.m. ET), a new documentary special featuring the survival stories of arts organizations across America; and the new three-part series INSIDE THE MET (Friday, May 21 at 9:00 and 10:00 p.m. ET and Friday, May 28 at 9:00 p.m. ET), which goes behind the scenes of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s struggle to survive amid the pandemic and its response to the urgent demands for social justice during its 150th anniversary.

As the campaign expands over the coming months, it will include new specials and original digital content from long-standing arts strands including GREAT PERFORMANCES, AMERICAN MASTERS and PBS NEWSHOUR’s CANVAS, while PBS DIGITAL STUDIOS, The WNET Group and other award-winning PBS arts series will provide digital programming. PBS member stations will also contribute content to their local schedules that examine the resiliency of the arts and artists in their communities.

Exclusive #PBSForTheArts blogs, published on pbs.org/arts, will also spotlight the inspiring pandemic survival stories of artists across the country. From Broadway dancers and concert performers to classical musicians, visual artists, and beyond, audiences will discover how these creative, resourceful artists have kept the arts vivid and vital during the pandemic, and learn about the projects they’re working on as the arts world gradually reopens.

“As we prepare for life post-COVID, it is so important that we come together to restore and revitalize the arts, which are central to the cultural health of our country,” said Paula Kerger, PBS President and CEO. “Through this sweeping initiative, PBS and our member stations will showcase the resilient spirit of the arts and ensure that all Americans can continue to access extraordinary dance, theater and musical performances on public television.”

As PBS’s largest producer of arts programming for more than 50 years, The WNET Group, home to PBS stations THIRTEEN and WLIW21, the network NJ PBS, and arts and culture media provider ALL ARTS, will lead digital content production and PBS member station collaboration efforts nationwide. The WNET Group will gather and curate content from local musicians, actors, dancers and artists that represent the range, diversity and scope of the performing arts.

“In times of crisis, the arts have the ability to lift us up, bring us together and give us hope for a better tomorrow. We are pleased to partner with PBS to spotlight the resilience of performing arts organizations as we look forward to the return of live performances and an end to the pandemic,” said Neal Shapiro, President and CEO of The WNET Group.

For more than 50 years, PBS has been the media destination for the arts, presenting dance, theater, opera, visual arts and concerts to Americans in every corner of the country. Over the past year, as the COVID-19 pandemic has ravaged the United States, it has decimated the arts community. Thousands of performers have lost their jobs as theater and dance companies, orchestras and music venues have struggled to survive or been forced to close. Through it all, PBS has continued to deliver high-quality arts and performance programming to homes nationwide, ensuring that the arts remain accessible to all, on air through its nearly 335 local public television stations and online through pbs.org and the PBS Video app.

All filmed under COVID restrictions, the #PBSForTheArts collection of programs include:

Topics to be examined include finding meaning in writing; what it takes to achieve excellence; trailblazing women in the arts; the power of music to honor the past and inspire the future; and arts of Mexico.

PBS Digital Studios – Original Episodes of SOUND FIELD

As part of an ongoing arts content partnership with the classical arts organization the Cliburn, PBS Digital Studios and General Audience Programming will partner with Twin Cities PBS to produce special episodes of the Webby-winning music education series, SOUND FIELD, in May 2021. Beyond utilizing the Cliburn’s extensive library of concert performances, their roster of affiliated performers and their consultation on writing/research throughout these episodes, this collaboration will illustrate the goal of the #PBSForTheArts campaign to highlight the creative work being done by arts organizations at all levels throughout the country.

Nahre Sol, a touring pianist and classical composer and a co-host from SOUND FIELD’s season one, will return for these two episodes. These SOUND FIELD episodes will showcase diversity in classical music and generate awareness about #PBSforTheArts among younger, diverse audiences across PBS digital platforms.

A Sequel to the Beloved Emmy(R) Award-Winning Series ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ New Series to Be Helmed by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger

Today it was announced that the Hulu Originals comedy series “How I Met Your Father” from Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger (“This Is Us,” “Love, Victor”) has received a straight-to-series order to stream exclusively on Hulu in the United States. The 10-episode comedy will star Hilary Duff (“Younger”) as Sophie, with Duff also serving as a producer. The sequel will use a multi- and single-camera approach similar to its predecessor. “How I Met Your Mother” creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will executive produce alongside Aptaker and Berger. 20th Television, which produced the original, will again serve as the studio.

“‘How I Met Your Mother’ continues to be one of the most innovative and beloved comedies on television,” said Craig Erwich, president, Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment. “Isaac and Elizabeth have an inspired take on this new version that honors what Carter and Craig created with the original and moves the franchise forward. Isaac and Elizabeth have proven to be rich storytellers and great partners to us at Hulu Originals and across The Walt Disney Company family. Coupled with the passion and infectious energy Hilary brings to every role she takes on, we can’t wait to suit up and bring audiences ‘How I Met Your Father.'”

“‘How I Met Your Mother’ is a crown jewel in the 20th library and its fans have clamored for more ever since our final broadcast seven years ago,” said Karey Burke, president, 20th Television. “Our genius producers Isaac and Elizabeth who are – wait for it – legendary within our halls, have created a spectacular new take which both honors the original and is entirely their own. Carter and Craig will return as executive producers, and who better to star as the central character than the incredible Hilary Duff? Many thanks to Craig Erwich and everyone at Hulu Originals for loving the script as much as we did and to our fantastic team who helped put this all together. I could not be more excited. Let the speculation as to who the father is commence!”

In the near future, Sophie (Duff) is telling her son the story of how she met his father: a story that catapults us back to the year 2021 where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.

Remarked original series creators Bays and Thomas, “Kids, I’m going to tell you an incredible story: It’s the story of how two writers got lucky enough to make their dream TV show for nine seasons and now get to pass the torch to an inspired new creative team with their own incredible story to tell, the story of ‘How I Met Your Father.’ We are honored by their passion and vision, and look forward to helping them tell a legendary new story. (Thanks to all the ‘HIMYM’ fans out there who waited for it.)”

Commented Aptaker and Berger, who are creating the sequel, “We are beyond excited to be bringing ‘How I Met Your Father’ to Hulu. Carter and Craig’s iconic original series revolutionized the half-hour comedy, and we are so honored to be carrying the torch forward for the next generation – and with Hilary Duff no less! We can’t wait for audiences to meet Sophie and her crew, and watch them come into their own and find love in modern-day New York City. And we hope nobody thinks it’s weird that Bob Saget will be playing old Hilary Duff’s voice.”

With a distinguished career spanning over two decades in film, television and music, Duff returns to the small screen following her starring role in TV Land’s breakout series, “Younger.” A pop-culture icon, Duff has had a renowned career as an actor/musician and has more than 20 million followers across Instagram and Twitter.

“I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie,” said Duff. “As a huge fan of ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ I’m honored and even a little nervous that Carter and Craig would trust me with the sequel of their baby. Isaac and Elizabeth are brilliant, and I can’t wait to work alongside them and all of their genius. Just fangirling over here getting to join the Hulu Originals and 20th families. I realize these are big shoes to fill and I’m excited to slip my 6 ½’s in there!”

“How I Met Your Father” will be the latest blockbuster title joining Hulu Originals’ upcoming slate of highly anticipated and star-studded series such as “Only Murders in the Building,” “Nine Perfect Strangers,” “Pam & Tommy” and “The Dropout.” “How I Met Your Father” also joins Hulu Originals’ commercial and critically successful Original comedy slate including “Pen15,” “The Great,” “Ramy,” “Woke” and “Dollface.”

“How I Met Your Father” is written by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Executive producers for “How I Met Your Father” include Aptaker, Berger, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. Adam Londy will serve as co-executive producer, and Hilary Duff will serve as a producer. “How I Met Your Father” is a production of 20th Television.

Disney And Pixar’s New Short “22 Vs. Earth” Coming To Disney+ April 30

BURBANK, Calif. (April 21, 2021) – Ever wonder what new soul 22 has against Earth in Disney and Pixar’s hit 2020 feature film “Soul”? A new short from Pixar Animation Studios revisits the skeptical soul long before she ever met Joe Gardner. Debuting on Disney+ on April 30, “22 vs. Earth” welcomes Tina Fey back to The Great Before as the voice of quick-witted and sarcastic soul 22.

Set before the events of “Soul,” the original short is directed by 21-year Pixar veteran Kevin Nolting. “While making ‘Soul,’ we talked about the why of a new soul not wanting to live on Earth, but it didn’t ultimately belong in that movie,” said Nolting. “’22 vs. Earth’ was a chance to explore some of the unanswered questions we had about why 22 was so cynical. As a fairly cynical person myself, it felt like perfect material.”

In the short, 22 defies the rules of The Great Before and refuses to go to Earth, enlisting a gang of five other new souls in her attempt at rebellion. However, as her cohorts’ activities lead to unexpected results, 22’s subversive plot may actually lead to a surprising revelation about the meaning of life.

“I think the new souls make the short so fun – the contrast of their pure innocence and delight with the cynical expectations of 22,” said Nolting. “The other new souls are what 22 once was before she took another path – purely innocent, blank slates to be guided by the counselors in their mostly uneventful journey to the earth portal. 22 sees an opening in that and attempts to guide them herself into her way of thinking.”

Edelman’s Coast Productions To Explore Creative Content Development as Part of New Deal With ViacomCBS

New Season of Emmy(R) Award-Winning INSIDE THE NFL Debuts on Paramount+ In September

NEW YORK – April 21, 2021 – Three-time Super Bowl Champion and Super Bowl LIII MVP Julian Edelman will join the Emmy(R) Award-winning studio show INSIDE THE NFL as an analyst when the series makes its debut on Paramount+ this September, kicking off its 43rd season on television. Edelman will join James Brown, Phil Simms and Brandon Marshall for the weekly series, also featuring contributions from NFL Hall of Famers Michael Irvin and Ray Lewis throughout the season.

Edelman, who recently announced his retirement from the NFL, will provide a fresh-off-the-field perspective, commentary and expert analysis using the knowledge he acquired over the course of his legendary 12-year career with the New England Patriots, in which he earned a reputation as one of the NFL’s most clutch receivers.

The move to INSIDE THE NFL will mark the second association between Edelman and ViacomCBS brands. Edelman, alongside founding partner Assaf Swissa, launched Coast Productions in 2019 and worked with SHOWTIME Sports on a documentary film co-written by Swissa and director Kyler Schelling titled 100%: JULIAN EDELMAN. In addition to INSIDE THE NFL, Edelman along with Coast Productions will further explore their creativity with the development of projects across various ViacomCBS networks and properties as part of the multi-year deal.

“Growing up I had two dreams: to win a Super Bowl and to be Maverick from Top Gun. So far, only one of these dreams has come true,” said Edelman. “When it came time to start thinking about my life after football, the path was clear. Having already established a strong relationship with Stephen Espinoza and David Nevins from a previous project with SHOWTIME, joining the ViacomCBS and CBS Sports team became the obvious choice, leaving one dynasty for another. I’m honored to join the iconic show, INSIDE THE NFL, and create original content with Coast Productions. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to chase down a different dream. Sorry, Goose. It’s time to buzz the tower.”

“We witnessed the creativity that Julian and his team put behind 100%: JULIAN EDELMAN, and we admired their ability to combine Julian’s unique voice with powerful, authentic storytelling,” said Stephen Espinoza, President, SHOWTIME Sports. “We are thrilled to welcome Julian to our team and embrace that voice as he becomes a dynamic force for us every Tuesday on INSIDE THE NFL. We are equally excited to continue our relationship with Coast Productions and explore additional content produced with their contagious creative energy.”

“Julian has been one of the greatest competitors and clutch performers in the NFL over the past decade, and we are excited to welcome him to INSIDE THE NFL,” said Sean McManus, Chairman, CBS Sports. “He will provide our viewers a fresh perspective and valuable insight having just stepped off the field. With his incredible career accomplishments, combined with his dedication, passion, and knowledge, we are looking forward to Julian joining our team.”

While Edelman becomes part of one of the longest running programs on television, Coast Productions also will make ViacomCBS its new home. Coast is at the forefront of creating a unique space for athletes to tell original stories in new and creative ways. Responsible for creating Edelman’s viral web shorts over the years, Coast is currently developing scripted and unscripted content. Proven creators of engaging content, Coast will bring that same sensibility to producing fresh content across the ViacomCBS networks and properties. Edelman becomes the latest in a line of elite athletes making the move to bring their athletic star power to television.

INSIDE THE NFL covers every game, every week, with trademark highlights from NFL Films, special in-depth features and spirited debate on the game’s hottest topics. The show is produced by CBS Sports, SHOWTIME Sports and NFL Films, with new episodes premiering every Tuesday night on Paramount+ during the NFL season through Super Bowl. The executive producers of INSIDE THE NFL are Sean McManus, Chairman, CBS Sports and Stephen Espinoza, as well as Ross Ketover and Pat Kelleher of NFL Films. Pete Radovich Jr., the award-winning Senior Creative Director for CBS Sports, serves as long-time coordinating producer.
